Natural Health . Those words are thrown around so much now, do we even know what they mean anymore? This year, we have run issues on healthy eating, meditation, and fitness— many different aspects of natural health. For this issue, I wanted to focus on natural healthcare. I asked my team for pieces on home remedies, the root of disease, alternative therapies and integrative health—let’s get the conversation going on what are some other, or additional, options available to us. Integrative and functional medicines are becoming more mainstream every day, and we are excited to feature several M.D.s that have taken this approach in their practices. Integrative Medicine is the healing-oriented medicine that takes into account the whole person, including their lifestyle, as well as all of the mental, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health. It opens the door to a wide range of treatments and puts the emphasis back on the patient-practitioner relationship. To me, it represents the beginning of an evolution, and I find it very exciting that the medical field is beginning to open its doors to treating not just the problem or the physical self, but everything that makes up a person as a human being. Tibetan practice teaches that people get sick when a person's physical, psychological and spiritual well-being

are out of balance. But according to Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, the Dalai Lama’s doctor and world-renowned expert in Tibetan medicine, “His Holiness the Dalai Lama was the first to say that these things we believe in should be subjected to scientific tools so we could better understand the human condition overall.” Modern medical science meets compassionate, whole-person care. That is my hope for the future of healthcare, and it’s exciting to see the seeds of that beginning to grow before our very eyes. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone. From all of us here at Nalamag, Thank You. We are thankful for you.

How to Treat Acid Reflux/GERD through Ayurveda By Catherine Robbins, BSc, AHP, PKS, KYTA

of equal parts Cumin, Coriander and Fennel dissolved in hot water offers a great relief. Drinking this tea with all your meals is a proactive approach to acid reflux, and it tastes delicious! Another ancient formula called Hingwastika taken as a Takra, a lightly spiced yogurt drink, (1/2 tsp herbs in ½ cup warm water and 2 Tbl plain yogurt) is another excellent treatment for GERD. Whatever GI ailment is plaguing you, it is wise to seek out a trained Ayurvedic practitioner that can help you determine your doshic makeup and your specific doshic imbalances, so you can begin your healing journey. ----Catherine Robbins, a New Orleans Local, is the owner and founder of Herbs to Live by. She provides Ayurvedic lifestyle consultations, Ayurvedic Bliss treatments & Pancha Karma and she has her own Herbal Apothecary where she creates individualized formulas for her clients. o you suffer from Acid Reflux disease? Do you habitually take over-the-counter antacids or have a prescription for the highly popular “proton pump inhibitors” (PPIs) such as Omeprazole (Prilosec) or the older histamine H2 receptor agonists (H2As) such as Famotidine (Pepcid)? Recent studies show these can contribute to small-intestinebacterial-overgrowth, chronic kidney disease and dementia. In truth, these medications shut down the cascade of enzymes that help us digest and absorb micro-nutrients from our food, and, although they can alleviate the symptoms of heartburn, their long-term use is now avoided. Enter Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of India which teaches: "Everything is a medicine for someone, nothing is the medicine for everyone." This explains why most people battle side effects from their western medications. According to Ayurveda, we are all unique individuals and our medicine should also be individualized. In Ayurveda, the three physio-psycho-spiritual energies that govern all life are known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata is the only mobile dosha so it governs all motion in the body from physical exercise to the movement of thoughts in the mind. When we take PPIs or H2As, we inhibit Vata in the stomach by inhibiting the movement of the acid needed to activate the enzymes throughout the digestive tract. If Vata remains inhibited at this level for a very long time, all Vata in the body can be inhibited leading to constipation. If Vata remains disturbed because of taking these medications, then even the movement of thought can become inhibited (confusion/dementia). Pitta is the only hot dosha and it governs all transformation in the body, chemical as well as physical. When we take PPIs and H2As, we can see how the Pitta needed to digest the food into micronutrients is perverted. The food then putrefies in the body and can lead to SIBO, excess heat, loose stools and weight gain. Kapha governs structure and stability in the body and if micronutrients are not available in the right part of the GI tract, they won’t get absorbed leading to weakness in the body and mind and depletion of one’s good Kapha. Ayurveda recommends turning to your kitchen for the proper treatment for Gastroesophageal reflux disease. A simple tea made 6

s es tr s management

Is stress on your mind? Trust us; you are not alone. Most Americans are suffering from moderate to high pressure, with 44 percent reporting that their stress levels have increased over the past five years. When an individual becomes stressed, both their mental and physical health suffers. Stress manifests physically both acutely and chronically such as prolonged muscle tension that can trigger headaches or soreness. The respiratory system is also affected, making it harder to breathe, which often leads to panic attacks and hyperventilation.

Being stressed has become a societal norm and can be challenging to manage in healthy ways. Despite the overwhelming feelings, stress is beatable. Here are a few ways to reduce stress and live a happier life. When your body/mind is telling you that you are stressed—listen 1newest and do something you like. Whether it be a solo hike, watching the Netflix original, or Face Timing your dog, do something that you enjoy.

commonly used stress-reduction technique is music. Some 2Aindividuals play or sing music while others listen. 3Eliminate small/simpler tasks that you can manage efficiently. Breathe. Being stressed is difficult and can feel all-encompassing, 4 but remember you aren’t alone. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to reduce stress levels. Exercise! Exercise benefits your mind just as well as your body. 5 Even a brief workout during a stressful period can provide relief for several hours. And always remember, the best cure is laughter. Forcing yourself to smile and laugh instantly relieves pressure and causes stress to 6 fade into the background.

Is INFLAMMATION the Root of Disease? By: Jordan Figueredo

Inflammation has long been a well-known symptom of many infectious diseases. In fact, modern research shows that chronic inflammation may be the common factor not only infectious in nature but in also cancers and autoimmune disorders.

10

New Orleans

nalamag.com

I

nflammation is part of the immune response and depends both on the physical actions of white blood cells and the chemicals that they produce: antibodies, cytokines, and so forth. Immunologists describe inflammation as dependent on two basic processes: Innate Immunity and Adaptive Immunity. Innate Immunity, the body's first line of defense, depends on physical barriers (skin, eyelashes) to prevent invading pathogens, and granulocytes to seek out and destroy the offending microbes. Adaptive Immunity is directed specifically at microbes that have invaded the body previously. As pathogens are eliminated, suppressor T cells turn down the inflammatory response, so the regeneration of tissue can begin. Acute inflammation starts suddenly but dissipates after a couple of days, such as with a sore throat, acute bronchitis, or acute sinusitis. Chronic inflammation, however, can stick around for months and even years. Chronic inflammation occurs if the source of inflammation is not removed. Some diseases associated with chronic

inflammation include asthma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation can be caused by poor dietary choices and sedentary lifestyles. When we consume toxin-packed food and expose our bodies to environmental toxins, our immune system is impacted. When the body is burdened with the toxins for extended periods of time, the toxins build up in the body and turn on an immune response that stays in a highly reactive state. Triggering foods include but are not limited to trans-fats, hydrogenated fats, sugar, refined carbohydrates, conventional animal products, and conventional dairy. Environmental triggers are food pollutants, toxic metals such as mercury, lack of sleep, and stress. Other causes of inflammation include dysbiosis which is an imbalance of bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract, and food allergies or sensitivities and H pylori. Not treating inflammation can lead to early signs of aging, increased susceptibility to infection, cancer, acid reflux, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, candidiasis, urinary tract infections, skin conditions, diabetes, and bronchitis. Growing evidence suggests that diseases with an inflammatory component can be treated through physical exercise, rather than pharmacology with physical activity changing the circulating levels of insulin, insulin-related pathways, inflammation, and immunity. Reducing inflammation can be done by introducing your body to an antiinflammatory diet as well as reducing stress through daily meditation and mindfulness, getting tested for food allergies, getting at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep per night, and including light to moderate exercise in your weekly routine. While some dietary changes are more difficult than others when reducing inflammatory foods, it is necessary to reduce chronic pain and benefit your overall health. By increasing an intake of anti-inflammatory foods and incorporating other natural remedies into your routine, you will not only feel better but also look better.

The Benefits of

CBD By: Crystal Nugent

D

o you lie awake late at night mouthing the words “what the heck is wrong with me?” You are not the only one. Sleeplessness, anxiety? Well, welcome to the world of Crystal! I’ve struggled with anxiety since I was a teenager — it affected my sleep, mood, relationships, immune system and my overall physical and mental health. I needed something to help relieve the constant stress taking a toll on my body. At the time, prescription medication was the only option my mother and doctors knew and had available, so I have taken a variety of prescriptions over my lifetime. My anxiety would build up and get so bad at times I would pass out — that’s right a complete pass out and blackout. My doctor had me taking general anxiety medications, and I also took Klonopin. I never liked the way it made me feel like a zombie or hermit crab. I never wanted to do anything or see anyone. It’s as if the medications made me shelter myself from life in hopes of not having to deal with my anxiety. It’s not the best way to live your life that’s for sure, and I know I am not alone. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 13 people globally suffers from anxiety. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America reports that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness

in the United States, affecting 40 million adults age 18 and older, or 18.1 percent of the population every year. Earlier this year, my friend Rachael told me to try Cannabidiol for my anxiety. Rachael was using CBD for her Crohn’s disease and claimed to be having such incredible success. After she explained a little bit about CBD, I decided to try it. CBD is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits but does not affect people with the same “high” feeling experienced when consuming Marijuana. CBD can even actually counteract the psycho activity of THC. The fact that CBDrich cannabis is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive made it appealing, and the more I researched, I realized that I had nothing to lose in trying it out. At first, I foolishly went online and ordered some different options, and they didn’t work. Speaking to Rachael again I ordered what she was using and BOOM by the end of the first week using it I was able to stop taking all my medications. It gave me such clarity in my mind; I was able to deal with my anxiety and move on. For those of you that suffer from the wicked witch of anxiety, you can relate to never being able to get over the anxiety of every little decision or action you take. I felt like this is how I

should have been living all along. U.S. government-funded research proves the CBD helps relieve inflammation, chronic pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism, Multiple Sclerosis, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, antibiotic-resistant infections, epilepsy and other neurological disorders. It also helps people with a wide range of conditions and without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria. CBD has demonstrable neuroprotective and neurogenic effects, and its anti-cancer properties are currently being investigated at several academic research centers in the U.S. as well. Once I overcame that massive obstacle in my life and seeing firsthand how CBD changed my life I knew I had to bring awareness to everyone around me. I knew I had to open up stores and educate people on the possibilities of using CBD to improve their quality of life. I opened up the very first storefront in the city to specifically carry CBD. I quickly learned that our community was waiting for something like this. We have customers that hug us and thank us for being there for them; it’s even more rewarding than I ever hoped. Customers with all types of ailments are coming back for their refills and express to me how they have finally found the relief they never could with prescription drugs. The best part is you don’t have to have a prescription card to purchase CBD. Now, I am opening my second location on Veterans Boulevard in Metairie and am excited to bring it to all the people that weren’t able to come to the city to purchase CBD and help Orleans and Jefferson Parishes benefit from the natural power of CBD. • --Crystal Nugent is the owner of Your CBD Store located at 3613 Magazine Street. A second location is opening November 3rd at 6824 Veterans Boulevard in Metairie. Visit cbdrx4u.com for more information.

NATURALLY TRANSITION TO BECOME ONE WITH THE EARTH

T

his issue discusses natural living - but what about what happens to us after life? Garden of Memories has become the first funeral home and cemetery to offer green burial services in the State of Louisiana and is a certified green business with LifeCity. What we call a green burial today was known as a traditional burial up until the 20th century. In a green funeral, the deceased does not undergo embalming with toxic chemicals. Instead, the body remains in its natural state, and only biodegradable materials are used such as a natural-fiber shroud. There is no concrete vault or plastic liner placed around the casket, so the body is in direct contact with the earth. Nature, the gift God has given us, is intended to shelter us during our lifetime, and again after we no longer inhabit our bodies. Our bodies may be recycled into new life when our lives come to an end. Nature doesn’t create waste; when we bury our bodies without anything that inhibits the natural process, our body becomes one with the earth, with nature, and thus with God. Green burials invite families to participate in age-old customs that reflect the path of our ancestors. Typically, preparing the body by bathing, anointing, shrouding in a simple biodegradable shroud, participating in grave decoration and the burial process itself, are practices included in a green burial. These practices honor the dead while healing the living and are a natural way of transitioning from this world to the next. Whatever your spiritual beliefs, if you seek to live a natural life even when that life comes to an end, this is one way to leave a positive mark on the planet. Contact Ryan Pierce at Garden of Memories for more information about green burials: 504-330-2510.

Dr. Goolsby is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is a certified elite health/age management provider. He has been leading the way in patient-centric health care for over 25 years. He launched Infinite Health Integrative Medicine Center, an elite, precision-medicine integrative practice, with a focus on health optimization, longevity, and regenerative medicines in 2013.

SALVATIONS salvage + creations

S

NOVEMBER 29, 2018

erving New Orleans since 1994, the Green Project's mission is to promote a culture of creative reuse by diverting usable materials from landfills and cultivating respect for their value. Through a salvage store, paint recycling program, environmental education, and community empowerment, the Green Project diverts 40,000 gallons of paint from wetlands, reclaims 2 million pounds of materials from the landfill and educates over 700 students and residents every year. After a three-year hiatus, the project announced the opening of ticket sales for annual fundraiser Salvations Gala + Auction. The event returns to a new venue—City Park’s Arbor Room at Popp Fountain—on Thursday, November 29, 2018. The evening event will begin with a Patron Party at 6 pm followed by the main event from 7-10pm. The gala includes a Salvage Design Competition, silent auction, raffle, locally crafted food, an open bar and live music. Anchoring the event is a Salvage Design Competition, which brings together over 20 local designers and teams to create furniture, lighting and functional art out of salvage materials, demonstrating that reclaimed goods have value. This year over 35 unique pieces will be juried, awarded top prizes and auctioned to the community in support of both the Green Project and the designers. This year’s jury panel includes Amanda Stone Talley (Amanda Stone Talley Art), Amanda Winstead (Amanda Winstead Fine Art) and Rohit Sood (Holly + Smith Architects). The gala aims to elevate a culture of creative reuse by highlighting the beauty of salvage materials and the talent of local designers, artists and makers. The furniture, lighting and art born out of the Salvage Design Competition are not only one-of-a-kind, but they are sustainable— reducing the amount of energy used to create new products while also supporting the artisan economy. Community members can purchase tickets, view the pieces and place bids at www.501auctions.com/Salvations.

For more information about the event, please visit www. salvationsdesigns. com. To see this year’s Salvage Design Competition participants, please visit www.salvationsdesigns. com/2018-competition.
