letter from the publisher
am born and raised here in New Orleans and it’s a huge part of who I am. So, needless to say, I was so excited when I noticed in the last year what I am now calling a bit of a “health renaissance” of sorts here in the city. I noticed more healthy options on menus, more restaurants geared towards healthy fare, new fitness studios, and it seems as if there was a fitness pop-up every day of the week this past summer. We also began partnering with great organizations such as the mayor’s initiative, Fit NOLA, and others such as Eat Fit NOLA that are driving factors in encouraging healthy living here in the city. In a city that is known for debauchery, I was happy to see that we are starting to find a balance. We can still celebrate the culture which makes up our fine town—the food made with local ingredients and love, the music that fills our soul, and the spirit that we dance with (is there any better way to burn calories?!). These ingredients have always brought us together as one heartbeat, beating together on our streets and in our homes, but now we are coming together as a community to celebrate healthy living as well.

I realized at that time that I was very fortunate to have a medium at my disposal in which I could give this movement a voice—a place to spotlight local organizations doing what they can to give back, locals doing amazing things within our community, the neighborhoods that make up our whole, the local events that bring us together, and support the small businesses that drive our economy. I thought that it was the least I could do for the town I have called home for the majority of my life and has given me so much. I would love to continue with that opportunity to provide the local content that I know we all love and balance that with the most interesting and helpful information on healthy, green living out there. I know the long and beautiful love affair we all have had with our town for so long—may we continue down this path to celebrate our culture and our health as one, and if there is anything I can do to help promote that, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

REGULAR SLEEP TIMES PROMOTE HEALTH A REPORT FROM THE U.S. CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION SUGGESTS THAT 35 PERCENT OF U.S. ADULTS DON’T GET ADEQUATE SLEEP. Dr. W. Chris Winter of the Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine clinic recommends we pick a wake-up time that works for every day and stick with it, regardless of bedtime; it pays off by eventually training the brain to fall asleep at the same time every night. Swedish scientists found that sleep loss reduces the presence of hormones that promote feelings of fullness in the stomach and increases the amount of those that promote hunger leading to obesity.

MEDITATION OVER MORPHINE?
“BE OPTIMISTIC, IT FEELS BETTER.” –DALAI LAMA
Earlier this year, a study conducted by Wake Forest Baptist University found that meditation could reduce pain intensity by 40 percent and pain unpleasantness by 57 percent. Morphine and other pain-relieving drugs typically show a pain reduction of 25 percent. Meditation works by reducing activity in the somatosensory cortex and increasing activity in other areas of the brain.

STAY HEART-HEALTHY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON he holiday season is a time for family gatherings, sharing gifts and enjoying savory foods but it can also be a time of stress and unhealthy eating which can play havoc on your heart. According to Dr. Rita Redberg, director of the Women’s Cardiovascular Services at the University of California, San Francisco, heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. The average person gains five pounds during the holidays which places more stress on your heart. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the fun and foods of the holidays. It only means to not indulge in excess so you can stick to a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle throughout the holiday season.

Here are some tips to stay heart-healthy this holiday season.
Choose healthy foods at holiday parties. Watch the alcoholic beverages. Pay attention to how much dessert you eat. Manage holiday stress by taking time for yourself. Maintain your exercise routine during the holidays. Staying heart-healthy during the holiday season is possible if you watch the foods you eat, manage stress and continue to exercise. By being proactive, you can enjoy the holidays and be heart-healthy too.

Doing a plank is one of the easiest, but most effective full body exercises out there. Holding the body stiff as a board develops strength primarily in the core—the muscles that connect the upper and lower body—as well as the shoulders, arms, and glutes. Also, it requires no equipment and can be performed just about anywhere (well, almost). Here’s how to do the perfect, standard plank:

PLANK IT UP! by Renee Jackson
1. PLANT the hands directly under the shoulders (slightly wider than shoulder-width apart) like you’re about to do a push-up.
2. GROUND the toes into the floor
and squeeze the glutes to stabilize the body. Your legs should be working in the move too; careful not to lock or hyperextend your knees.
3. NEUTRALIZE the neck and
spine by looking at a spot on the floor about a foot beyond the hands. Your head should be in line with your back.
4. HOLD the position for 20 seconds. As you get more comfortable with the move, hold your plank for as long as possible without compromising form or breath. natural awakenings

healingways 6 | TAKE A HOLIDAY BINGE DAY Designate a day with no limits and no self-judgment. For anyone that mentally monitors their calories or sweets, claim a binge day out loud with permission for total holiday munching freedom. The next day we can reinstate discipline after our day of liberation.
7 | SING WHILE WE WORK Nothing makes meal preparation tasks go faster than crooning along to our favorite carols. Turn up Susan Boyle’s O Holy Night and before you know it, your lungs will be full of air, heart filled with sentiment, and the turkey stuffed with seasonal goodness will be ready to go into the oven.
HAPPY HOLIDAY TIPS
HOW TO REALLY ENJOY THE SEASON
by Dianne Bischoff James
F
eelings of comfort and joy can seem elusive when the holiday to-do list looms or runs amuck. The season can seem more like an endless burden than a parade of cheerful events and glad tidings. Amidst celebratory chaos, these simple rules will help restore inner peace and create greater happiness.
1 | ESCHEW PERFECTION Guests are much more interested in filling their stomachs with great food than judging the scuff marks and wall dings. The perfection of the season is found in the special moments when families and friends sit down together. 2 | PAY ATTENTION TO THE SMILES
Approaching holidays bring out more shared smiles, kind words and thoughtful gestures. While out and about, look for the grins and well wishes. Hold the door open for others and offer a friendly greeting to store clerks. We’ll find ourselves smiling more, too, because thoughtfulness is contagious.
3 | DO NOTHING FOR 15 MINUTES It’s amazing how refreshed we feel when we take a few minutes to sit in a comfort-
able chair and simply experience a moment of stillness. Inner quiet allows the mind to relax and reinvest energy in the body, so we return to holiday activities with renewed zest.
4 | GIVE EACH PERSON A SPECIAL GIFT
Think of something thoughtful that both the giver and receiver enjoy doing together and write a promissory note for the shared experience, such as a free backrub, a day spent downtown, a personal manicure or a movie the other person wants to see.
5 | TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EXTENDED
SHOPPING HOURS To avoid crowds and lines, schedule a late-night powershopping trip. This is the easiest way to manage a department store visit with sanity, have easy access to the shelves and get immediate service.

8 | EXPRESS FEELINGS IN A HEALTHY WAY Family gatherings can sometimes test our boundaries and patience. Avoid repressing feelings by finding a way to speak a personal truth in the moment, in a calm and healthy fashion. It’s better than arriving at home stewing about what we wish we could or should have said. 9 | ASSIGN ROLES TO HOUSEHOLD HELPERS
The holiday load is lighter when everyone pitches in. Assign specific roles to household members with clear responsibilities, from taking out the garbage to setting the table and washing up.
10 | LEAVE SOME TASKS FOR LATER It’s unrealistic to think the house has to be in perfect order after festive gatherings. After guests leave, put the leftovers in the fridge and watch a movie. Cleanup will feel easier and faster after a good night’s rest. 11 | EXPRESS GRATITUDE AT THE TABLE Loving feelings can never be expressed enough, so use the holiday as an opportunity to tell others how important they are to you. Create a heartfelt moment at the table by sharing at least one thing that you’re truly grateful for, and ask everyone else to do the same. 12 | GO OUTSIDE FOR FUN IN NATURE
Hiking in a nearby forest preserve, skating, sledding or building a snow fort with the kids not only burns energy, but is emotionally exhilarating for the whole family. Pick an outdoor activity, don appropriate togs and share in the laughter and serenity of a sparkling winter day.

healthyhome HOW TO SCENT EACH ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE
eal estate agents often advise homeowners to bake bread or cookies before a viewing. Filling your house with a delicious food smell might hurry the sales process, but in everyday life, is oatmeal and peanut butter an appropriate scent for the bathroom? There are practical reasons for choosing different scents for each room in your house. Besides, if you use one fragrance too long, eventually you will not notice it anymore. Not only will you lose the experience, but you might try to compensate by upping the dosage, creating an overpowering atmosphere for guests. Here are some ideas for which scents to apply to each room, and how to invite different moods into the areas of your home.
R
BATHROOM Use fresh, non-heavy smells to give your bathroom a spa-like atmosphere. Fresh linen works well, as do cotton and natural smells like rain and sea breeze. Be aware that you will also be able to smell the cleaning products you use, so choose complementary scents in bleach and toilet cleaners if you can.
BEDROOM You want to foster an atmosphere of relaxation and sensuality here. Dark, heavy scents work well. Do not be afraid to layer, but avoid overpowering the room if you have trouble sleeping. Incense sticks work well here, as do plugins and candles—arranged safely and never left unattended. Use rose, lavender, vanilla, berries, patchouli and lotus flower for deep relaxation and harmony.
HALLWAY
LIVING ROOM
KITCHEN
You might not have thought about applying scent in your hallway, but everyone’s first impressions are made here. Use fresh, floral fragrances to transition from outdoors to indoors. Hide a plug-in spray underneath a console table, or fill a vase weekly with fragrant blooms to provide a focal point. Potpourri would also look nice, but beware of heavy musks, and keep it light. Cut grass, lemon oil, hyacinth, jasmine and magnolia are all fresh scents to welcome guests to your home.
This is likely the main area of your house, and the one room that should reflect your personality. Food scents are not always a good idea, as everyone’s focus will be on the dinner rather than conversation. If using lavender and chamomile, choose an energetic scent to complement them, as they have a sedative effect. Choose a lively, unusual scent, and do not be afraid to use musks in moderation. Sandalwood, orange oil, berries, cedar and vetivert are good choices.
Naturally this room lends itself to food scents. There are hundreds of varieties now available in candles and diffusers. Avoid plug-ins, as the residue may land on food preparation surfaces. Again, fresh flowers are a good visual source. Use fresh-baked cookies, cinnamon, strawberry, apple, sage, rosemary and basil. Be aware that you also may want to use scents to deter insects and cover up cooking smells. Citronella does wonders, as do lemon and citrus candles.
It is possible to use scents to cover up odors such as cooking, pets and cigarette smoke, so if there are areas of your home that are prone to malodor, make sure you pay attention to the scents you use nearby. Reed diffusers are an excellent safe and potent way to disperse scent, and are best placed high and out of reach of pets and children. Remember some pets are sensitive to smells such as citrus and eucalyptus, so use these carefully and choose products with as few chemicals and pollutants as possible.

Carla ASK THE LIFE COACH with Robertson
I’m trying to simplify the holidays this year, but I can’t figure out what parts to let go of. Any tips?
—Jane
H
ere’s an easy way to focus on what’s most important to you for the holidays, and one of my favorite pre-holiday exercises. First, think of a really happy holiday memory. Use all your senses to immerse yourself in the memory, then describe it in writing, recalling specific details and how you felt. Look over what you wrote, circling key words or phrases that evoke the way you want to feel this season. Use this as a gauge for your holiday activities, plans, décor (or lack thereof ), etc. For example, if your key feelings are wonder and joy, choose experiences that will allow that. If your key feelings are coziness and warmth, you might prioritize different experiences. You can do this with family members so each person gets to pick one activity that matches their desired feelings. You will be amazed at how many typical holiday activities fall away and which ones become much more important when you focus on feeling states. Enjoy, and have a wonderful holiday!
