esolutions. It is something that is on everyone’s lips as much as a season’s greeting. We are all measured in our resolutions. What are we going to resolve to change in the New Year? It speaks to things that we want to see change in our lives. We all know that old habits die hard. This is why so many resolutions are abandoned by Mardi Gras. In anticipation to this I have taken some time this past holiday to reflect on my habits and how they serve my life for better or worse. Some good habits seem innate. From brushing our teeth to flushing the toilet we don’t even think about the action. It is just something that we do automatically without much thought. We definitely don’t have to talk ourselves into doing these routines. This took years of consistent reminders and orders from our upbringing to ingrain in our mind as habits. So how can I make a morning run or an evening yoga session as natural as brushing my teeth? Every morning when I open my eyes the inner struggle starts. “I didn’t sleep well” or “I will start tomorrow” or “I did it yesterday. Taking one day off won’t hurt.” I know that I will feel so amazing after the fact. But it doesn’t stop the internal diatribe that prompts me to push the snooze but-
ton. So how can I make this part of my daily habits? How can we push past the phase where I have to talk myself into performing this beneficial routine and have it become effortless and thoughtless. To tackle that big question I turned to an expert on the subject. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is a fascinating exploration of how habits are formed. Duhigg goes into details about the chemistry of habits. How you can change them and the power that they can have on your life. It is a fascinating read, but I will give you the best nuggets I have gleamed from the bestseller. If any of you have dogs or children, this will seem very familiar. In order for something to become a habit, you have to first develop it as a routine. This means repetition. Doing it every day (my current inner fight stage). To help combat that inner fight and really establish something as a mental habit there has to be some kind of reward. Just like we praise our children for a job well done or give our dog a treat for successfully completing a trick. We have to make the mental association that there is an immediate positive outcome from completing the routine (immediate being the key word). This will create the positive connection point in our brain with completing this routine. Your brain will start to anticipate the reward before you even complete the task helping you get past the inner fight phase. This month's issue is dedicated to the power of habits. They can be our best road to a happy and healthy life. I hope you take this New Year as an opportunity to start developing those habits that make you feel your best self. Remember, we are all creatures of habit. Let’s make those habits ones we are proud to own.
Happy New Year

NOLA’S YOUTH BENEFIT FROM YOGA & MINDFULNESS
W
e are indeed living in a fast-paced go go world. Adults may have learned the art of balance while carving out personal and professional time for their family, job, as well as social, fitness or creative and spiritual activities. Adults have the opportunity to engage in conversations with other adults who share their tips on ways to find balance, perhaps even solace when dealing with life challenges. The mature mind has the luxury of knowing how to turn everything off, to seek a quiet place or to reach out and find peace. Our youth have tons going on too. School then after-school activities— some may have jobs, and family commitments or responsibilities such as serving as a babysitter to siblings or helping other relatives. How often have we as adults or parents thought of the value and importance of sharing yoga and meditation with youth/children? Not surprisingly, children or young adults can find it quite challenging to bring

his/her mind and body to stillness, and in fact, it’s an unrealistic expectation for our youth to obtain “Zen” as adults do. The approach to teaching mindfulness and the moving meditation of yoga to youth and children, therefore, is unique. Activities that focus on using the five senses, engagement, movement, and expression are developmentally more appropriate for teaching the practice of Mindfulness. NOLA is fortunate to have forward thinkers who have made a positive impact in our city that can potentially have a profound positive global effect for our future. Natural Awakenings Louisiana (NALA) had the opportunity to speak with Chelsea Hylton, Founder of Peaceful Warriors, who is bringing Yoga & Mindfulness to our schools. Who: In 2013, Chelsea made her move from Charleston to New Orleans in order to start teaching as an enrichment teacher in local charter schools and quickly noticed a cultural shift that had a tangible impact on those communities and students. Digging into the issues, what Chelsea discovered was staggering statistics. According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network 25% of American youth experience a serious traumatic event before the age of 16 and 79% of youth in New Orleans have experienced one or more traumatic events by age 16.
One in five screen positive for lifetime PTSD. Rather than let the obstacles facing these students overwhelm her, Chelsea spotted an opportunity for empowering change. “I grew up with two addicts, experienced trauma, and knew the personal benefit of yoga. These students need a more specific type of yoga taught to them, and they need a smaller group setting to meet more individual needs.” What: Next Chelsea began to deepen her experience through specialized trauma trainings, developed a more solid foundation in the physical, mental, psychological, and social background of trauma, and began to develop a plan for integrating trauma-informed yoga programs into the community. Through her study and her experience, she knew that the classrooms were the perfect setting to empower students, educators, school leaders, and caretakers with the tools of trauma-aware yoga and mindfulness in an academic setting. According to Chelsea, “having yoga in a school and during the day helps the process because it’s already safe. When the students feel safe and supported, it increases the yoga’s impact on the students because they’re more receptive. There is trust there.” The Birth of an Idea: In 2015 Chelsea pitched Project Peaceful Warriors at a contest. Although she was rejected, Chelsea deemed it to be one of the “best
things that could have ever happened.” The constructive feedback and resources she received helped her to prototype and hone Project Peaceful Warriors even further. In March 2016, Chelsea made her pitch again during New Orleans Entrepreneur Week at the 4.0 Schools Pitch Contest for Education and was able to clinch $7,000 in funding for her programs. Project Peaceful Warriors is an effective and sustainable force for change for New Orleans youth. WHERE: Schools, yoga studios, and community partners— Peaceful Warriors works with eight school programs and three youth-serving community organizations and have worked with over 900 students and 250 teachers since launching in 2015. They have launched a pilot program at Lusher with the support of the Tulane School of Public Health so that they can have concrete measures and data on the impact of programming. Listed partnerships include yoga studios around town that offer free or a nominal drop-in fee for all levels community classes and are listed on www. peacefulwarrior.com (Yoga for everyone page). WHY WE DO IT: Empowerment through Peace—The prevalence of trauma in New Orleans’ youth requires many facets of healing, empowering youth with the tools of yoga and mindfulness that can serve as immediate therapeutic modalities and positively impact their healing process and success in the classroom. Trauma not only affects psychological functioning, but it also manifests in the body physically as well. It disrupts social-emotional development in youth hindering the ability to develop proper social relationships and manifests as poor self-regulation
skills, altered perceptions of safety, normative beliefs about aggression, and feelings of low self-worth, guilt, and shame. The number of traumatic experiences in childhood is the second most powerful predictor of academic failure. There is evidence based on studies that indicate moments of silence, structured relaxation times, visualization exercises, and activities that foster intentional movement are relevant and engaging for youth and children. Once they have discovered that place of stillness within themselves, they become more connected and present. How beautiful to find “Zen” as a youth and use this as momentum for peace. HOW: Taking the time to use the practice, students are empowered to experience their minds, bodies, and feelings in a safe place to begin, sustain, and deepen their healing process. Chelsea shared, “these kids are not there to try and fix themselves or look good— it’s internal, it’s deeper than that and they feel it.” Through our program and partnerships like Yoga Ed., Project Peaceful Warriors is going to be able to grow their staff, seeing more teachers in more schools. And they’ll be able to see schools becoming more self-sufficient by training teachers from within using Yoga Ed. curricula. With an educational culture in New Orleans so open and enthusiastic toward innovation, the future for Project Peaceful Warriors, and the youth they serve, just keeps getting brighter. Local recycling community leaders including LifeCity, Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Cajun Encounters, Republic Services, and Whole Foods partnered with District “C” Councilmember Ramsey, Chair of the Committee on Public Works and Sanitation, to promote increased citywide recycling efforts. “This initiative hopes to increase recycling efforts, which will support the city’s resilience plan by leveraging sustainability as a growth strategy, supporting more equitable public health outcomes for the community, creating a culture of environmental awareness, and significantly reducing the volume of material disposed at landfills,” said Councilmember Ramsey. The resolution was developed in response to a recent assessment, which found New Orleans only recycles approximately five percent of its waste (eligible for pick-up by the City of New Orleans). This is not only a waste of natural resources but also a missed economic opportunity—jobs and revenue.

Routines require more focus as they are things that need to be done, but we may be more lackadasy.

by Dodge Prescott
T
his is 2017, right?, a brand-new year of setting resolutions, goals, and intentions. Yes! We are going to embrace change! This means initiating new habits or routines so our goals and intentions are seamless/a reality/a way of life, so that when it’s 2018 we are not recreating the same list. Before diving into the five tips that can help shift or change our behaviors, so we are manifesting our goals and intentions, let's dig deeper and define the difference between a habit and a routine. A habit is an action done on a regular basis while a routine is a course of action to be followed regularly such as a standard procedure or process. Decades of psychological research demonstrate that habits such as washing your hands (action) after using the toilet (which is a cue) or putting on your seatbelt (action) after popping into your car (cue) show that repetition leads to associative learning. The persistent automation is now common on the subconscious level and reflected in your actions, and you no longer need to think about the conscious motivation of your actions and this frees your mind to focus on other tasks. Now for routines, these are the activities we do on a regular bases and may also be triggered
10

by some sort of a cue, but they don’t quite stick at the subconscious level. Routines require more focus as they are things that need to be done, but we may be more lackadaisical—such as rising at 6:00 AM with intentions to do Sun Salutations (but we may hit the snooze button), attending a writers group on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, (we may cancel due to other events) or even studying French for 30 mins on Tuesday, (I will do it Thursday). The difference is that routines require effort and may not be formed—which can potentially lead to failure. It’s easy to see how sometimes a habit and routine can be unintentionally bundled or blurred, and for some may lead to frustration when wanting to initiate change. This has led to an entire field of study related to habits and routines. Stanford Professor BJ Fogg as well as Charles Duhigg in his bestselling book, The Power of Habit, have both conducted the research and published the evidence. The following steps serve as a guide as you initiate the change you seek.
STRATEGY: Put your plan in place. Simple. As soon as she woke up each morning she would go to the washroom, and then meditate using the techniques she had read about.
TRIGGER OR CUE: Create an activity that takes a moment before you initiate the formation of your new habit. Your cue and your habit require a connection to solidify the bond between the two of them. Together, they become part of your subconscious and once embedded, you will do them almost instinctively. In the beginning you may need to focus in preparation, but before long you will no longer need to “think about it.”
GET POSITIVE FEEDBACK: Share your intentions with family, friends, or like-minded associates who will see your progress and success.
Claire Bigley REPORT THE HABIT TO A SOCIAL GROUP: Talk about your new habit. It’s a wonderful thing to share and you will likely receive support from your virtual friends and social media networks. Online social avenues and groups who share your new habit can be a great source of inspiration.
REWARD YOURSELF: When developing new habits define a realistic tangible reward that keeps you on track with your new habit. If your new habit is to meditate every morning for 20 minutes after a month treat yourself to a new cushion or mat, something that goes with your new practice. Keep in mind when we first engage in a new task, our brains are working hard—processing tons of new information as we find our way. But, as soon as we understand how a task works, the behavior starts becoming automatic and the mental activity required to do the task decreases dramatically. Think about how much brainpower and concentration you had to use the first time you parallel parked or even the first time you tied your shoelaces. Then compare that to the amount of mental effort you exert doing those activities now, and before you know it, you have harnessed the power of healthy habits and are ready to move on to something else you wish to achieve instead of just collecting another list in a half-written journal from 2011 tucked in a drawer.

o the typical American way of thinking, yoga is an exercise routine that incorporates stretching, balance, and strength training. But the poses developed in the 5,000-year-old Indian practice of yoga were actually intended to calm the mind and relax the body in order to prepare for meditation where one can seek union with the Divine. Katrina Zech, a New Orleans yoga instructor, Yoga Nidra facilitator (meditation guide), and music therapist, combines all three techniques in her weekly class at Unity of New Orleans Spiritual Center. Zech studied with the Yogi Amrit Desai, considered to be the last living master of yoga in the United States who, in the 1960s, brought to this country the
authentic teachings of yoga and taught her the philosophy and wisdom of the ancient practice. “My teacher says, if it doesn’t transform your life, it isn’t yoga,” Zech says. Renee Lattimore particularly appreciates the guided meditation at the end of class. Yoga Nidra, which means “yogic sleep,” is said to induce a state of “pratyahara” a withdrawal from the senses that helps focus on the inner self. Participants are guided through meditation to empty their minds of thoughts and anxieties to achieve deep states of consciousness. “Katrina always emphasizes that the physical part is preparation for the meditation,” Lattimore, 74, adds. “There is a common misconception that you have to be young and flexible to do yoga, but the practice is really about
experiencing meditation while in motion,” Zech says. “The traditional postures (or asanas) release energy blockages, while increasing energy flow, endurance, internal balance, flexibility, and the feeling of wellness,” Zech says. Our daily lives can be stressful, with sensory overload from constant stimuli via smartphones, email, and a barrage of messages on radio and television. Yoga induces a parasympathetic nervous system response, reducing fight-or-flight stress hormones, including cortisol, adrenalin, and epinephrine, that result from too much stimulation. Practicing yoga over a period of time can actually alter the body’s biochemistry, increasing the production of GABA (gammaaminobutyric acid), an amino acid that

By Mary Rickard acts as a natural Valium, Zech says. Melatonin levels increase for improved sleep and serotonin for balancing mood also rises. In addition, the body releases more oxytocin. Known as the “love chemical, it reduces pain. Endorphins increase, which are responsible for feelings of happiness, as does DHEA, which reduces fatugue. Finally, the body produces Human Growth Hormone for regeneration and repair. Zech studied music therapy at Loyola University New Orleans and brings that knowledge into her yoga class. “The sound vibration helps the body let go of negative holding patterns, she says. Beginning class with a Dharma talk, she then uses musical instruments to induce relaxation, influencing breathing, pulse, and heart rate. She might play a mono-
chord, an ancient stringed instrument, as well as flute, guitar, and crystal toning bowls. Running a wand around the lip of a quartz crystal toning bowl creates a frequency that affects the body’s connective tissue, which has been described as a “crystalline matrix. This allows the release of chronic tension and pain, often caused by stressful life experiences. “The sound kind of hypnotizes you— I love it, Caroline Rivera says. Music has been used to affect positive change in emotional states of being since time began. Indigenous shamans, the very first healing practitioners, incorporated drumming, chants, and singing with ritual and prayer. Zech says the trance-like or meditative state that can be achieved from a music ceremony allows one to access the subconscious
mind where memories, old emotions and trauma are stored. A study at McGill University in Canada showed that listening to music supports production of brain chemicals, specifically dopamine, bringing about a feeling of well-being. “Yoga, music, and meditation teaches us how to stay calm and relaxed in life, no matter what is going on around you, Zech says. “I look forward to Saturdays all week. I love it, Rivera says. MARY RICKARD is a freelance writer who has regularly written for The Times-Picayune, The New Orleans Advocate and Gambit Weekly. EXERCISE IN MIDLIFE HELPS PRESERVE MENTAL SHARPNESS A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in July confirms that physical activity in midlife can help reduce the chances of developing cognitive impairment in old age. Scientists studied data on the physical activity levels from 3,050 twins in Finland given questionnaires in 1975 and 1981.
A phone interview more than 25 years later served as a follow-up cognitive evaluation, and the subjects were divided into three categories: cognitively impaired, suffering mild cognitive impairment or cognitively healthy. Individuals who participated in vigorous physical activity when they were middle-aged displayed lower levels of cognitive impairment compared to those who did less vigorous exercise.
