F
ood. It’s more than a daily part of our lives. It is a cultural, environmental, economic, and emotional statement about who we are. Food is love. Food is memories. Food is energy. We eat when we are happy. We eat when we are sad. It is an ever present thought in our mind (and more over our belly). My relationship with food, just like any constant in life, is complicated. There are foods I love that hate me (thanks cheese) and foods I hate that love me (thanks kale). How do we ever find our way out of this food labyrinth? To try and answer that question I recently read Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders and Jill Enders. Have you ever heard the expression “Men think with their stomachs?” Well according to Enders we all do. There are more nerve receptors in the gut than any other part of the body, including the brain. Our emotions are tied into what we eat and how it makes us feel. Our body is speaking to us through the gut. Alerting us to the effects that our food choices have on our life. It has taken me years… but I am finally starting to listen.
I know it is hard for us New Orleanians to contemplate, but there are places outside of New Orleans that do not hold the same ritual-like eating practices as we do (audible gasp). These scary places find the prospect of two-hour dinners odd. They don’t have Crystal Hot Sauce on the table, and you actually have to use the salt and pepper shakers on the table because the food is bland. Scary I know. There are a lot of things New Orleans has done to negatively affect our health (thanks King Cake and Daiquiries), but taking the time to make an experience out of eating is not one of them. Long before the rest of the country got on the “eat local” train, New Orleans restaurants were delivering dishes that represented the best local ingredients of the day. We didn’t have to ask where our crawfish came from or if it was wild-caught. It was all in the taste and how it made us feel. There is no camouflage that could mask a non-gulf oyster, and we wouldn’t dream of eating one. We feel so strongly for these local ingredients to be celebrated. How then can we transfer this passion into all our other food matters? This issue is dedicated to one of New Orleans’ greatest treasures: Food. We will talk you through everything from veganism to blue zone diets, and help you get to know your neighborhood better. And get a little help from a life coach. Whatever your personal food preferences are, we hope you learn something that will help your gut stay happy.

Mid-City is home to a cheerful neighborhood where the residents frequent many of the family-owned restaurants, businesses, quaint bars and music venues with their own flair and flavor. Catch the red streetcar from Canal Street to “end of line” while passing 10 aboveground cemeteries or “cities of the dead,” stop to feed the ducks at City Park, kayak on Bayou St. John, explore the Lafitte Greenway, a 2.6-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail, or attend Bayou Boogaloo.

Boundaries
The City Planning Commission defines the boundaries as City Park Avenue, Toulouse Street, North Carrollton, Orleans Avenue, Bayou St. John and St. Louis Street to the north, North Broad Street to the east, and the Pontchartrain Expressway to the west. It is a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
History
Located in the middle of New Orleans, which was once the backslope of the Mississippi River’s natural levee, a gradually declining section of the river’s floodplain, Mid-City was called the “backatown (back of town),” as the city ended at the swamp back in those days.

Most of the homes are 1880s creole cottages, single and double shotgun houses, and also bungalows and townhouses. As MidCity is considered one of the first suburbs, the streetcar line runs the entirety of Canal Street making Mid-City easily accessible to the CBD & Vieux Carré.

Mix all ingredients except oysters, set aside. Use freshshucked raw or lightly poached oysters. Drain oysters well, remove shells, reserve liquid. In medium pot, place reserved liquid with 1 quart water over high heat. Prepare ice bath. Submerge oysters in boiling liquid—immediately stir for 30 seconds.

Add a savory twist to the New Orleans favorite – oysters on the half shell! This recipe incorporates nutrient-dense ingredients without relying on butter for flavor. 1 lemon zested and juiced 1 lime zested and juiced 1 ounce soy sauce 1 ounce Worcestershire 1 ounce Valentina hot sauce 1 teaspoon Three Crabs fish sauce 2 tomatoes peeled, seeded, and chopped 1 cucumber seeded and chopped 1 bunch green onions whites

Garnish with celery leaves and a pinch of Old Bay Seasoning.
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish 1/4 ounce parsley chopped 1 quart oysters, about 50 to 65 GARNISH Celery leaves 1 pinch (1/16 teaspoon) Old Bay Seasoning or celery salt Shaved jalapeño, optional
Per serving: 70 calories, 1.5 grams fat, 0 saturated fat, 390 mg sodium, 7 grams carbohydrate, 1 gram fiber, 2 grams sugar (0 added sugar), 6 grams protein 12
Remove oysters, then shock in ice water. Drain liquid—save for another use, such as soup or gumbo. Stir together ceviche mix and chopped oysters— let chill at least 10 minutes. Spoon 2 tablespoons of Bloody Mary Oyster Ceviche on each half shell over crushed ice.

Global Connections—Is there a blueprint for the “Blue Zones”?

I
recently hit a benchmark year in my age and since then I tend to pay more attention to evidencebased information related to longevity and living joyfully with greater purpose. In my quest, I found I am not alone— I have a glocal (global/local) tribe out there and we are connected by a chosen lifestyle that includes improving the quality of life free from barriers related to color, creed, or socioeconomic division. One of my tribe-mates in Japan was sharing info on the happiest and healthiest locations on the globe and sent me a link about Longevity, which in turn led me to a page called “Blue Zones Project” by Healthways. The site had information that resonated with me and offered an easy inquiry to determine my personal vitality data. I decided to take the “Vitality Test” in hopes of identifying a baseline to see if I was in alignment with my glocal tribe-mate.

The online “Vitality Compass” test identified key factors I already practiced, but also subliminally slapped me into reality about a few habits and routines that I can certainly improve upon if I wanted to “Live Longer Better.” The data revealed for my age, habits, and demographics that I could potentially add 17.5 years to my life if I implemented some positive changes. I received several helpful healthy suggestions on how I could easily introduce them into my life. The recommendations related to my diet, movement, hydration, sleep, friendliness, and faith. Lastly it referenced global markers for “Blue Zones.” Although not a new concept, “Blue Zones” are used to identify a demographic and/or geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives. Author and leader in the Blue Zone Project, Dan Buettner, a Global Explorer spent years visiting areas of the world where people tend to live longer, healthier lives and discovered the Blue Zone Phenomena. So I pondered, can the “Blue Zones” be a blueprint for living longer and better in the U.S.? Buettner indicates that a growing number of U.S. cities are adopting the secrets of longevity discovered in “Blue Zones” around the world. He also identified in addition to his “Power of 9” a few simple ways you can use the blueprint for yourself as well as for your community:
MOVE NATURALLY | The world’s longest-lived people live in places that urge them to move naturally. Working with city planners, schools, and worksites, we reshape communities so people naturally move more each day without thinking about it. We make it fun to leave home and participate in activities, enjoy an active commute, or easily walk to restaurants. EAT WISELY | People make hundreds of food decisions every day. We help make healthy choices easier. We know what it means to Eat Green in New Orleans by Julie Holman

umor has it that 2017 is the “Year of the Vegan” – Dr. Oz made a prediction that practicing a vegan or plant-based diet would be the trend this year in terms of dietary choices. I am reluctant to call it a trend as it’s been my personal lifestyle choice, as well as for many of my NOLA friends and family as long as I can remember. Eating a plant-based or Vegan diet has at times been challenging, and within the past few years it has become a trillion-dollar industry—that’s not a trend likely to end but more so a lifestyle choice that’s here to stay. Choosing to eat compassionately either on behalf of the animals, the environment, or personal health and wellness is positively beneficial to the self and the planet.

Our society is geared toward primary intake of meat, fowl, eggs, dairy and seafood products in our meals. The choice to omit a food group or product you are used to consuming in your diet is truly a process, and it takes time both mentally and physically to adjust to the absence of one product, let alone many. Modifying your diet to a plant-based diet can be fun by experimenting with homemade recipes, venturing to restaurants that offer diet options, or by attending a meet-up or potluck where you will meet people who share your same dietary path. The New Orleans area offers vegan or plant-based options —no matter where you are—it’s taking a moment to know what to look for and explore options to modify your food preference.
NOLA is known for its diverse people, music, culture and food. Notably there has been an increase in restaurants and businesses in New Orleans catering to the Vegan lifestyle—our Southern veggie roots are deep and based in traditional Creole, French, Spanish, Caribbean, and Vietnamese influences. Vegan or plant-based dishes have a presence in traditional New Orleans tables and menus whether dining out or preparing meals at home. Mirepoix, or the Holy Trinity, is the traditional start for most Louisiana Cajun or Creole cuisine. The aromatic vegetables green bell pepper (poivron), onion, and celery diced and combined are called the Holy Trinity. The method is similar to
Claire Bigley Mirepoix in traditional French cuisine which blends roughly diced onion, celery and carrot. Characteristic aromatics for the Creole version may also include parsley, bay leaf, green onions, dried cayenne pepper, and dried black pepper—this foundation has made its way to most every Louisiana pot, vegan or not. reat question! We know New Orleans is always going to be full of pralines, bread pudding, po-boys, cochon de lait, and Sazeracs, so how do we make the change from within? As one of my favorite mentors says, we simply make a different choice. Try coffee at brunch instead of the ubiquitous bottomless mimosa and see if it really impacts your happiness. Gently teach your mind that fun does not have to equal eating and drinking all the things. Next time you’re at a festival, focus on the music
or the dancing. Try feasting on the colors, the conversation, the feel of the breeze and the sun. Find other paths to joy and satisfaction separate from the refreshments. This requires discernment on your part and paying close attention to which actions are truly satisfying you and which are just easy or
