hen we began publishing Natural Awakenings of Southeast Louisiana four years ago, we could only imagine the possibilities for alternative and complementary health care in the region. The fabric of so many lives had unraveled after the 2005 floods that people were having trouble reconnecting.

Natural health care practitioners were doubly challenged to reach their clients and the public.

Today, we have come together to successfully weave a stronger natural living community than ever before. Together we are fostering a natural health care revolution.

As one local integrative physician remarks, “We are in a paradigm shift right now where integration of alternative and Western medicine is beginning.”

As Kathleen Barnes points out in “Alternative Goes Mainstream,” this phenomenon is due to a confluence of trends: a growing body of credible scientific research that supports the effectiveness of many alternative therapies; public demand for a choice of natural and non-invasive therapies; and conventional practitioners that have embraced holistic treatments such as mind-body practices and energy medicine.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in the National Institutes of Health has begun to fund studies of alternative and complementary therapies, but many more are urgently needed. Director Dr. Josephine P. Briggs characterizes the need as compelling. “Tens of millions of Americans are spending $34 billion per year (mostly out-of-pocket) on a variety of complementary approaches, most often without any solid [clinical] evidence about safety or usefulness,” she observes.

Testimonies of those helped and healed by such approaches are most often anecdotal.

Thus, we are triply pleased by the opening of three new holistic health centers in our area. The largest is housed in the stunning 55,000-square-foot renovation of the old Universal Furniture store, in Bywater, as the New Orleans Healing Center. This regional community center hosts a fitness center, bookstore, credit union and food co-op store of local and organic foods, as well as the healing arts center for alternative and complementary therapies. Equally telling are the presence of Healing with a Heart, in New Orleans, and Journey into Wellness, in Metairie, both opened in 2011. The launching of several new integrative medical practices are further harbingers of good things to come.

Looking to the future, Linda Sechrist asked respected experts to demystify the year 2012 on the Maya calendar, and they answered with reassurance about what is and is not predicted for planet Earth this year. I now feel confident in planning next year’s holiday party for December 22. To top it all off, we share insights from Deepak Chopra on the universal outlook for conscious being.

newsbriefs It’s VerdiGras Time!

erdiGras, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a more environmentally-friendly Carnival, is kicking off its inaugural Mardi Gras season with a VerdiGras All Green Ball on Friday, Jan. 21.

The event, which will be preceded by a patron party from 7 to 8 p.m., will start at 8 p.m. and last until midnight. The party will take place at the Southport Music Hall located at 200 Monticello Ave. in Jefferson. Live music will be provided by The Susan Cowsill Band.

“We’re thrilled to be able to kick off our first Mardi Gras with this VerdiGras All Green Ball, and are humbled to have already had such an enthusiastic response from the community,” said VerdiGras founder and organizer Holly Groh. “We are looking forward to taking steps to a more eco-friendly Carnival in 2012. We hope this, in turn, inspires other krewes and community members to support a greener, more locally-inspired carnival season.”

The theme of the VerdiGras All Green Ball is “It’s Easy Being Green.” Chef Robert Bruce will prepare drinks and dishes made from locally grown ingredients. Proceeds from the event will benefit the bead recycling efforts of St. Michael’s Special School and the Arc of Greater New Orleans, along with supporting the efforts of the New Orleans Musician’s Assistance Foundation.

he Latino Farmers Cooperative of Louisiana has started its third Giving Garden Fundraiser, which installs backyard gardens in exchange for supporting the Latino Farmers Cooperative food pantry. For $350, volunteers and staff will build a 3-foot-by-8-foot garden bed and the money raised will directly support the needs of the Latino community.

Since the first fundraiser in the fall of 2010 the organization has installed approximately 50 gardens all over the city, at first building small gardens sowed with seeds but now installing larger beds with a variety of starter plants, which are better able to survive. The goal is to install at least 15 vegetable gardens this spring, according to Executive Director Kathia Duran.

“We are trying to make it easy for the beginner gardeners,” Duran said, adding that installing a garden is not – it’s a lot of logistics and heavy lifting. “This program is a win-win for everybody - for the gardeners, they get fresh food and the satisfaction and the learning experience.

“We then transfer the money we raise and put it to good use, to service a population that needs the food,” she said. “So it is beneficial for both communities.

That’s why it’s called the Giving Garden - it gives to the consumer and it gives resources to our emergency food program.”

n August of 2011, licensed acupuncturist Ashley Miller opened her practice in Covington, calling it Magnolia Acupuncture Clinic, located at 434 N. Columbia St., Suite L. Raising the Bar with Ashiatsu

A

shiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is a combination of elements of traditional Thai massage, barefoot Shiatsu from Japan and Keralite massage from Southern India that delivers a deep and luxurious massage, according to Susan Trahan, who now offers this technique exclusively at her Ashiatsu Studio in Covington. The technique was developed in 1995 by Ruthie Piper Hardee.

N

ew Orleans physician , Dr. Paul G. Harch in collaboration with Virginia Mcullough, has published the second edition of The Oxygen Revolution, in which he describes medical grade hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the ground-breaking work he has done using this treatment with phenomenal success on a wide variety of conditions, including non-healing wounds, traumatic brain injuries, cerebral palsy, autism, stroke, MS and even Alzheimer’s.

Harch reports an extensive body of work using his own system of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT®), and while the body of research is growing, giving evidence of the treatment’s effectiveness on many conditions for which conventional medicine has no effective treatment, the medical community has not yet embraced this therapy.

Recently Harch has worked with severely wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afganistan with nearly 100% of 40 treated showing significant clinical improvement, including five that returned to active duty. The estimated savings to the Federal Government in avoiding retraining to those five is $6.3 million. Future plans include treatment of 1,000 veterans in collaboration with The National Brain Injury Rescue and Rehabilitation Project. This work will save millions for the government, but more importantly will significantly improve the personal and professional lives of those treated and that of their families.

As is the case with other effective “alternative” therapies, such as acupuncture and chiropractic, conventional medicine simply has ignored using medical grade hyperbaric oxygen therapy, not even considering it when they have nothing else in their arsenal to offer. But as with these other therapies, patients are beginning to ask for it and to ask for insurance coverage for it. And thanks to the work of Dr. Harch, the evidence is growing. The book is a must read for anyone interested in cuttingedge therapies.

Chamomile tea has long been said to soothe a troubled belly and restless mind. After reviewing scientific literature on the herb’s beneficial bioactivity, the study team published an article in Agricultural Research describing test-tube evidence that the beverage also offers moderate antimicrobial and significant anti-platelet-clumping action. They found that peppermint tea also shows significant antimicrobial, plus antiviral, antioxidant and antitumor actions, and even some antiallergenic potential. After reviewing human clinical trials, the researchers further reported that drinking hibiscus tea lowered blood pressure in a group of pre-hypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults.

PROBIOTICS HELP PREVENT ECZEMA

A

study by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology shows that the incidence of eczema in children of mothers that drank milk fortified with a probiotic supplement during pregnancy and while breastfeeding was about half that experienced otherwise.

The Power of Good Posture

M

o t h e r ’s wa r n i n g s a g a i n s t slouching were correct. Recent research proves that poor posture not only makes a bad impression, it can make us feel physically weaker.

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, explored the relationship of posture and pain tolerance and found that by simply adopting more dominant poses, individuals can feel more powerful, in control and better able to tolerate distress. More, those studied using the most dominant posture were able to comfortably tolerate more pain than others assigned a more neutral or submissive stance.

People tend to curl up into a ball when in pain, but the University of Southern California researchers recommend doing the opposite—try sitting or standing up straight, lifting the chin, pushing out the chest and generally expanding the body shape.

They suggest that these small, yet empowering, changes in behavior can decrease sensitivity to pain.

Adopting a powerful posture may even affect the body’s hormone levels, boosting testosterone, which is associated with increased pain tolerance, and decreasing cortisol, typically released in response to stress.

Something’s Spawning Gender-Bent Fish A French study examining wild gudgeon fish that live directly downstream from a pharmaceutical drug manufacturing plant found that up to 80 percent of them exhibited both male and female traits in their sex organs. Such sex abnormalities indicate endocrine disruption that can foreshadow larger effects on fish populations because of reductions in breeding abilities.

Upstream of the plant, only 5 percent of such intersex fish were detected.

Excreted pharmaceuticals can enter the environment from sewage treatment plants or the flushing of unwanted or old drugs down the toilet. They also can directly enter waterways via discharge into rivers and streams by drug manufacturing plants.

The study is the first to link discharge from a drug plant, rather than a sewage plant, with physical and chemical changes in fish.

The inquiry was initiated after fishermen along the Dore River, in France, noticed swollen bellies and abnormal innards in the wild gudgeon fish. Study results were published i n the journal Environmental International. More research is needed to identify the types and levels of specific drugs in the water at each site.

Volunteerism Remains Strong in America More than 60 million Americans volunteered 8 billion hours of their services in 2010, holding steady with the previous year, according to the latest report by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), released late last year. Communities are benefiting from their work in mentoring and tutoring youth, fundraising and providing food, transportation and general labor, including disaster relief.

“Every day, volunteers of all ages are giving their time and talents to solve problems and make our country stronger,” says Robert Velasco II, acting CEO of CNCS. He observes that civic involvement increases as people become more deeply rooted in their communities through family, work and school ties.

The members of Generation X (born 1965 to 1981) are volunteer stars, having contributed 2.3 billion hours in 2010, 110 million more than the year before. Teen volunteer rates were also up from 2002 through 2010, compared to 1989.

A Volunteering in America report attributes this to emphasis on service-learning in high schools, the influence of parents that volunteer, social networking and the ease of finding opportunities via the Internet.

Your ‘Healthy’ Diet May be Making You Sick

H

ippocrates is reported to have said “Let thy food be your medicine and your medicine thy food.” As more is learned about the unique, genetically determined biochemical makeup of individuals, the truth of Hippocrates words becomes more compelling. The healthy diet promoted by major health organizations today is actually making some of us sick and even making some of us fat. Why? The answer is called food intolerance.

Food intolerance is a complex, individualized biochemical sensitivity to

those foods that are otherwise wholesome and harmless. This sensitivity causes the immune system to react as if it were protecting the body from a foreign invader such as bacteria or viruses. Food intolerance induces inflammation and the excessive generation of toxic free radicals and immune chemicals, often resulting in the occurrence of metabolic, chronic and degenerative diseases as well as contributing to obesity. Intolerances to food and food additives have been linked to digestive problems, migraines, skin and joint problems, and several other health conditions. When trigger foods are avoided, inflammation resolves, weight normalizes, and a number of inflammatory based health problems subside.

Fortunately, it is possible to lose weight and feel great utilizing a scientifically verified test and eating program that can dramatically change one’s life. The ALCAT test measures food intolerances using proprietary technology that measures whole blood against an array of antigens in order to look for an immune response.

For nearly 25 years, the ALCAT test has provided a tool to help successfully

ALTERNATIVE GOES MAINSTREAM Today’s Complementary Trends Support Natural Health Care

aven’t we all at some time shifted to more healthy foods, enjoyed a massage, consulted with a chiropractor or naturopath, popped a vitamin C supplement or attended a yoga, Tai chi, qigong or Pilates class? Many of us also meditate regularly and pray for sick friends and relatives.

If we’ve engaged in any of these activities, we are among the nearly two-thirds of Americans that use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies each year. While these approaches to wellness have been practiced for millennia, it’s only been in the past decade or so that they have begun to move from the U.S. alternative fringe into the American mainstream.

The widespread use of CAM therapies is due to a confluence of three trends: a growing body of credible scientific research that supports their effectiveness; popular demand for these natural, noninvasive and effective therapies; and growing recognition by conventional practitioners that healing is accomplished through holistic treatments that address body, mind and spirit.

The U.S. government established the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in 1992, under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health, to investigate and evaluate promising unconventional medical practices. In the 21st century, it’s been picked up more widely under the concept of integrative medicine, in which conventional medical and more natural therapies are used to complement one

another. This encouraging development also reflects current trends among major categories of therapies that take body, mind and spirit into account.

Its core concept requires that the practitioner treat the underlying causes of disease, rather than just the symptoms.

TCM has now become foundational in modern thinking as well, prompting an understanding that the entire organism—body, mind and spirit—must be addressed in order for healing to take place.

“Homotoxicology is the most exciting trend in TCM today,” says Jonathan Wald, an acupuncture physician and academic dean of East West College of Natural Healing, in Sarasota, Florida. He explains: “It’s a blend of homeopathy, acupuncture and herbal medicine, with allopathic diagnostic techniques.” Homotoxicology (sometimes called biopuncture) applies herbal and homeopathic solution injections at specifically related energy meridian points to relieve various disease conditions or pain and rebalance the body.

Another promising development is use of the Ryodaraku machine that measures electrical resistance to identify diseases in their beginning stages, affording early treatment. “I think of Ryodaraku almost as a TCM form of a blood test,” says Wald. “It helps us see what’s going on and we can often correct it with a little electrical stimulation pen.”

Today, TCM and Western allopathic medicine are being considered in concert more often as practitioners find practical common ground in hospitals and clinical settings throughout the United States.

Current energy therapies comprise a broad range of hands-on healing modalities, ranging from Reiki, Healing Touch and Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping), to an increasing array of hybrids. The Energy Medicine Institute (EnergyMed.org), in Ashland, Oregon, notes that energy medicine can employ a variety of non-invasive methods intended to trigger the body’s natural healing powers, working to activate energies that have become weakened, disturbed or unbalanced.

According to the institute, flow, balance and harmony can be restored and maintained within an energy system by tapping, massaging, pinching, twisting or connecting specific energy points (known as acupoints) on the skin; tracing or swirling the hand over the skin along specific energy pathways; exercises or postures designed for specific energetic effects; focused use of the mind to alter specific energies; and/ or surrounding an area with healing energies (one person’s energies impact another’s).

Nicolas Ortner, founder of The Tapping Solution, calls this Emotional Freedom Techniques-based energy modality, “…a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.” By tapping on meridian points of the body while repeating certain helpful affirmations about health or emotional situations, energetic blockages can be removed, allowing profound physical and emotional changes to take place.

Ortner is excited about the growing awareness of selfguided healing through energy modalities, including his technique. “We had 350,000 people at our online Tapping World Summit last year,” he says. “That says something about the need that we are fulfilling.”

Herbalism

Herbalism is widely practiced worldwide to heal body and mind, and herbs and other plants are sometimes used in spiritual healing. Herbs are commonly prescribed by conventional physicians in Europe. In 1978, the German Commission E published a list of more than 300 herbs, noting research attesting to their safety and effectiveness, as well as possible side effects and drug interactions.

The United States has lagged in its acceptance of herbal interventions. Still, S u s u n We e d , founder of the Wise Woman C e n t e r, i n Woodstock, New York, and author of four herbal books, including Healing Wise, points out that drug companies have been quick to isolate various herbal medicine components and market them as prescription drugs.

“In the ’60s, I discovered that the weeds in my garden were better medicinal plants than the ones I intentionally planted,” recalls Weed. “Back then, there was a general belief that these alternative systems weren’t ‘real’ medicine.” But it’s more a matter of the Western world catching up with the rest of the world, she notes. “The World Health Organization says that 90 percent of the health care given on this planet is given by women in their own homes, using local plants.”

Weed reports that across the United States, attendance at herbal conferences has soared. Herbalism is a big idea whose time has come again, and is now being rewoven into family life. “I call it re-weaving the healing cloak of the ancients,” she says. “This is evolutionary medicine.”

Homeopathy, operating on the principle of “like treats like,” involves the use of highly diluted substances to trigger the body’s natural process of healing.

According to The Society of Homeopaths, “A substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same natural awakenings

symptoms.”

For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation. Thus, when caffeine is made into a homeopathic medicine, it could be used to treat people with these symptoms.

Dana Ullman, author of The Homeopathic Revolution and Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicines, notes that the trend in homeopathy in the United States has its debunkers.

He attributes this to establishment fears that, “If homeopathy is true, then everything about modern medicine and science is false.” But, he adds, “The homeopathy deniers ignore or downplay the substantial body of verifying evidence from basic science and clinical research— from outcome studies, cost-effectiveness studies and epidemiological evidence.”

Angela Wilson, assistant director of the Institute for Extraordinary Living (IEL), affiliated with the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, in Lenox, Massachusetts, reports burgeoning interest in these therapies. “Doctors have become very interested in any practice that can help people slow down and calm down,” observes Wilson.

A 2007 NCCAM study found that 9.4 percent of U.S. adults, more than 20 million people, had practiced meditation in the previous year.

Some of the latest IEL research provides scientific proof that Kripalu yoga (often called “meditation in motion”) can act as a buffer, “…helping people to face daily challenges without getting rocked off their feet or off their center,” says Wilson.

She is also excited about a recent Massachusetts General Hospital study. It showed that in just eight weeks of practicing meditation, subjects experienced physiological changes in the part of the limbic system that relates to fear, resulting in less stress and anxiety.

Naturopathy Naturopathic medicine, a general system of natural medicine, includes nutrition, herbalism, homeopathy, acupuncture and energy medicine. Its goal is to holistically address the entire organism—body, mind and spirit.

In general, naturopathic physicians are those that work to support our innate healing abilities. They universally encourage adoption of lifestyle changes that promote optimal health.

In states where naturopathic doctors (ND) are licensed, practitioners are required to graduate from a four-year residential naturopathic medical school and pass a board examination.

In states that do not license them, people that successfully complete online courses can call themselves a naturopath. Make sure that any consulting naturopathic doctor has graduated from a residential program approved by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (Naturopathic.org).

Carl Hangee-Bauer, current president of the national association and a doctor of naturopathy with San Francisco Natural Medicine, has long been a proponent of licensing. He observes, “Currently, 16 states license naturopaths, and the trend is toward more licensing states and inclusion in federal programs, as well as loan forgiveness.”

He believes this will bring more qualified students to the profession.

Economics is among the many incentives driving consumers to a greater awareness of the

benefits of pursuing wellness, as they come to understand how major, long-term medical bills might be reduced by applying common sense, healthy lifestyle practices and other doable steps toward preventing illness in the first place. “Our practice is growing every year. People are willing to pay for quality health care,” remarks Hangee-Bauer.

Nutrition Nutrition comprises the time-tested foundation of health and includes foods and vitamin and mineral supplements, as well as herbs and spices.

I m p o r t a n t l y, core values about nutrition vary from culture to culture.

In the United States, the Standard American Diet (SAD) has been off-track for long enough that it has resulted in a widespread health crisis. The problem is that, contrary to the counsel of nutrition experts, many of us have become heavily dependent upon high-fat, high-sugar, heavily processed foods. The typical American’s diet is severely lacking in recommended vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

“The health crisis isn’t limited to the United States,” states Joshua Rosenthal, founder of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, in New York City. “Fast food and processed foods have invaded other traditional cultures, as well. Awareness and education are at the forefront of this revolution, and movements like ours are among the major catalysts for change.”

Looking Forward

Overall, today’s trends in CAM therapies are positive, hopeful and helpful.

Conventional medicine seems to be becoming more open to a broad range of therapies it once peremptorily relegated to the scientific dustbin.

New research and long-term evidence proves that many of these non-invasive therapies are effective and can work hand-in-hand with

conventional therapies. Individually and in combination, they can result in healings and cures once unimaginable to traditional practitioners.

How to Be a Good Patient

eing a good patient is essential to any successful treatment, especially holistic treatment. Often, people seeking alternative care arrive at a practitioner’s or therapist’s office fed up with conventional treatment and confused by the lack of permanent healing, yet newly expectant of receiving quick answers and recovery. It helps if the individual understands how the two approaches differ and can even complement one another.

With conventional medical care, doctors focus on identifying the disease that is creating the symptoms affecting the patient. The goal is to halt the progression of the disease and/or sustain life.

Alternative practitioners’ goal is a patient’s overall wellness and improved quality of life. They focus on uncovering and alleviating any imbalances that are robbing the individual of their quality of life. A holistic practitioner and patient are a team with a mutual mission. This

Offer regular, precise and accurate reports on your treatment’s progress.

With alternative care, treatment is highly individualized and requires ongoing monitoring and adjustment to discern what is working and what isn’t. Follow and continue treatment as advised and exercise patience and compassion for yourself and your treatment team.

Take care of yourself. Eat healthy,

Stick with it. Expect incremental progress, even in the face of setbacks.

Visualize an optimum state of wellness for yourself. Past failures do not need to be repeated when you work in tandem with your practitioner partner(s). Watch for relief, then acknowledge and nurture it by being a good patient. Share all good news with your practitioner.

Don’t own the disease. Avoid scary labels and lists of symptoms in discussions with yourself and others. You want them to visualize health right along with you.

Maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Returning to old habits may cause problems to return. Make health a priority in daily choices.

Treat your practitioner with respect.

Caring natural practitioners are ready and willing to walk with you on your path of healing. Forego rants about past bad experiences and direct any complaints about lack of coverage for alternative treatment toward the insurance companies.

Searching “Maya 2012” online yields a morass of some 10 million results, so Natural Awakenings sought clarity about the phenomenon of expected world change associated with December 21, 2012, by focusing on what leading authorities have to say.

ohn Major Jenkins, a respected 2012 author of Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 and The 2012 Story, and director of The Center for 2012 Studies, created contemporary awareness of the galactic alignment of the sun with the center of the Milky Way galaxy, which underlies the famous 2012 cycle-ending date on a winter solstice. His studies of the original Mayan calendar, located in Izapa, supported the true day count of the Mayan Long Count calendar.

Jenkins points out that according to the calculations of astronomer Jean Meeus, this alignment began around 1980 and will end around 2016. “Meeus’ calculations support my belief that the alignment occurs over time, rather than precisely on December 21, 2012,” advises Jenkins.

Robert Sitler’s long-standing personal relationships with today’s Maya and formal study of their living communities in Mexico and Guatemala inform his latest book, The Living Maya: Ancient Wisdom in the Era of 2012. He serves as director of Latin American studies at Stetson University, in DeLand, Florida.

Both experts agree that December 21, 2012 signals neither the end o f t h e world nor the conclusion of the complex Mayan calendar; it is however, the end of the 13-Bak’tun cycle of 5,125 years. Weighing the Options

Medically Supervised Low Carb

W

hile the rest of the country tackles their New Year resolutions, such as “lose those 35 pounds,” Southeast Louisiana is just approaching the height of its party season. Those extra two months of “holiday season” may help explain why in 2010 Louisiana was named the fifth most obese state in the country, according to an annual report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Thirty-one percent of the state’s adults were obese, according to the report.

Weight loss can be daunting any time of the year. If finding help to get started is on your to do list, here are some local options to check out.

The Ideal Protein (IP) diet is a medically supervised very low carbohydrate diet designed to stabilize insulin and blood sugar levels while promoting fat burning but sparing muscle mass. The diet is a combination of fresh foods and packaged foods purchased through the program.

Some mineral supplements are required, but no pharmacological medicines are used. According to protocol, weekly evaluations and counseling is provided.

Exercise is not necessary and even discouraged at the beginning.

Debbi Hannan, D.C. uses the program in her practice at the Chiropractic Health Center in Metairie. She likes the program for her patients because, “it has a great track record of being a predictable and repeatable program. Weekly weight loss is usually three to five pounds for women and five to seven for men.” She sees patients with metabolic syndrome improving to the point where medications may be decreased or dropped.

PMA Medical Treatment and Wellness Center in Kenner offers ALCAT food intolerance testing in addition to the IP diet. Ricky Phillips, a nurse practitioner at the center, reports that some patients lose weight once they eliminate food intolerances. See article on page 12.

glé Solutions is a local company that helps businesses keep their facilities clean with environmentally-friendly products and processes and help them reduce energy consumption through self funded upgrades.

“We focus on saving our customers money,” said owner Ryan Eglé. He also noted that they now wait until after a demonstration to inform potential customers that the less expensive products are also some of the safest to the planet.

The company developed SmartClean, a cleaning program that uses green products, and EnergyWise, an energy efficiency program that designs lighting and energy plans for businesses interested in efficiency and sustainability. Drain/Trap/Sewer (DTS) is the firm’s automated bio-remediation process that removes FOG (fat, oil and grease) and maintains clean flowing drains.

Eglé specializes in facilities where harsh chemicals are typically used. “We only use natural ingredients with safe, harmless microbes and bio-organic catalysts,” Eglé said.

The two-year old business began around Eco Concepts green cleaning product manufacturer, with a business model focused on helping businesses save money and improve their environmental impact.

Eglé joined the Green Games to “support the movement for environmental responsibility,” he said. “Conscious environmental decisions can help companies save and protect the health of our children and future generations.”

Conversations, LLC

M

egan Hargroder, the Social Media Strategist who runs Conversations, LLC, assists small businesses set up online marketing campaigns, which saves them money, reaches more people and uses less paper.

Many social media consultants take over, but Hargroder works with her clients so they make the decisions and learn to manage it themselves. Conversations is “naturally green” because it is online, Hargroder said, her clients have said that online marketing is more effective. She wants to help businesses make the switch to a more efficient, effective, and sustainable marketing practice.

She shares an office with other small business owners, uses Skype for meetings instead of traveling, and does not use paper, so Conversations is fairly green; even so, as a Green Games contestant she is finding ways to improve. “All of these things have certainly saved me a lot of money and time - and time is money,” she said.

She originally signed up for the Green Games to promote her company, but she has learned ways to cut costs and save energy and resources at home and at work. “I recommend it to anyone who wants to take small steps to be a part of big change,” she said.

IN Exchange

I

N Exchange is a non-profit located at Tulane University’s student center that sells artwork, jewelry, clothing, accessories and gifts produced at international fair trade standards by local and global artisans. Many of the artisans live in developing countries with limited access to international markets, so IN Exchange offers them a venue for the exhibition and sale of their work at a fair price.

The International New Orleans Exchange (IN Exchange) was founded in 2007 by Erica Trani, who sought to increase awareness of fair trade and connect artisans with customers. The concept was developed through the support of the Levy-Rosenblum Institute for Entrepreneurship at the A.B. Freeman School of Business and funded by the National Basketball Association and IN EXCHANGE local small businesses.

Fair Trade & New Orleans Made Environmental sustainability is imbedded in the mission, Director Katie Schmidt said. “One of the principles of fair trade is to ensure environmental sustainability,” she said. “…the environmental as well as the social are equally important.”

She recommends the Green Games because of the exposure it provides to participating businesses while it provides them the motivation to improve. “It is not just about marketing, but it is about creating community awareness and support for green businesses.”

Small Business Fairy Godmothers

ew Orleans is the place to be an entrepreneur. Many consider it the land of opportunity, attracting young, bright and ambitious people here from all over the country to take part in rebuilding post-Katrina. Along with those returning to the city, they have taken the plunge to pursue their dreams here while helping rebuild the city, but both groups may need help realizing those dreams.

Now they have help. With the intent of supporting good work and lifting families out of poverty, several programs are available to assist local residents with their plans to make a good living while making the community a better place. Hope Credit Union and Kiva New Orleans are two examples of such programs.

Kiva is a nonprofit organization that works to alleviate poverty through a network of microfinance institutions.

Kiva programs are in place all over the world, lending as little as $25 to people to seize opportunities when they present themselves. In New Orleans, the program is administered by local partners ASI Federal Credit Union and Good Work Network, which will screen the applicants and select qualified borrowers. The best candidates will be businesses that have identified an opportunity that will help grow their business but need funds to pursue it.

A unique characteristic of the Kiva program is that it resembles a revolving loan in that once it is paid back it is again available as what is called a Kiva Credit, which can be used to fund another loan, as a line of credit, or as a donation back to Kiva for the program.

Since its founding in 2005, Kiva has secured 651,686 lenders, loaned out $264 million to small businesses, and had a

98.96% repayment rate.

Hope Credit Union is focused on building small business opportunities in the Mid South, specifically Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. This organization’s mission is specifically to improve lives in the economically distressed communities in this region through financial products and related services.

HOPE was organized originally as the Enterprise Corporation of the Delta in 1994 with the mission of community development in the 58 counties and parishes in the Delta region. According to its website, the organization has assisted more than 70,000 entrepreneurs, homebuyers and nonprofits with $1.4 billion in financing generated and enhanced through partnerships with banks, corporations, public agencies and community organizations.

HOPE is involved in a financing program created by the City of New Orleans to spur the development of supermarkets, grocery stores and fresh food markets in the underserved communities in the city. This program, called the Fresh Food Retailer Initiative (FFRI) provides financing for entrepreneurs and businesses interested in opening or expanding to a market for fresh fruits and vegetables. HOPE partnered with The Food Trust to administer this program for the benefit of the community, most of which has a lack of access to fresh, healthy foods at reasonable prices.

Healthy Choices Kids Love

hat’s a surefire way to get kids dashing to the dinner table? Simmer up a batch of hearty soup and then sit back and watch it disappear,” says Ken Haedrich. “Kids love soup,” he maintains, “because it’s warm and soothing and slurpy.” A former navy Seabee and author of the classic Soup Makes the Meal, Haedrich is a father to four grown children. “Besides being kid-friendly, soup has other advantages,” he continues. “It can be made ahead of time, and you’ll probably end up with leftovers—a bonus for busy families.”

Soup is also a great way to get kids interested in vegetables and in cooking.

So Bader and her daughter Amelie started entertaining fresh ways of looking at food. At the grocery store or farmers’ market, for example, they played “I Spy,” as in “I spy something purple that tastes like....

Amelie could pick any vegetable and we’d figure out how to cook it at home—often in soup,” says Bader.

Soups made with vegetable broths likewise offer anti-inflammatory properties and comforting goodness, maintains green living expert Annie B. Bond. Inspired by Haedrich’s book, Bond added her own spin to this soup for her daughter.

Grandma’s Healing Soup

“This light, restorative soup is so delicious you don’t have to be sick to enjoy it,” says Bond. “Either way, its luscious fragrance helps clear sinuses, and the potatoes soothe the digestive tract. It’s a delightful broth, filled with spinach, parsley, leeks and garlic, that yields minerals, vitamins and healing antioxidants, with some winter root vegetables for sweetness. A steaming bowlful on a cold winter day is wonderfully comforting.”

Serves 4 to 5

1. In a soup pot, heat the olive oil and add leeks, carrot, potato, parsnip and garlic.

Cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat about 5 minutes. Add stock and salt to taste, and then bring to a simmer.

2. Simmer soup, partially covered, for about 5 minutes, and then stir in parsley and spinach. Simmer, partially covered, about 5 more minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Add pepper to taste and serve piping hot.

Winter Vegetable Soup

This recipe is adapted from The Cleaner Plate Club: More Than 100 Recipes for Real Food Your Kids Will Love, by Beth Bader and Ali Benjamin. “Parmesan rinds are the secret to a rich flavor in nearly any soup,” advises Bader, the mother of a 6-year-old.

“When you finish up a wedge of Parmesan cheese, save the rind and freeze it for later use. When you add the rind to a hot soup, it will melt a bit and little pieces of Parmesan will blend into the soup. ” Tip: She finds farro, an ancient strain of grain, in the bulk foods aisle.

4. Add the greens, and simmer for 5 more minutes.

1 large onion, chopped 2 /3 c u p c h o p p e d c a r r o t ( a b o u t 3 medium carrots) 2 /3 cup chopped celery (about 3 stalks) 2 garlic cloves, minced 10 cups vegetable or chicken stock 1 Tbsp dried summer savory 2 tsp dried thyme 2 bay leaves 2 small Parmesan rinds, optional 1 lb sweet pot atoes, peeled and diced small (¼-inch cubes) 1 lb winter squash, peeled and diced small (¼-inch cubes) 1 cup farro, rinsed and drained or 1 cup lentils, rinsed, sorted and drained 1 bunch (about 12 oz) kale or chard greens, stemmed and chopped Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1. Warm the oil over medium-low heat and add the onion, carrot and celery.

Sweat this combination, known as a mirepoix, until the onion is translucent.

2. Add the stock and the savory, thyme and bay leaves. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Add the sweet potato, squash and Parmesan rinds, and then simmer for 30 minutes.

ilates can help to build and maintain lean muscle mass while you are losing weight, realign posture as the body’s center of gravity changes, promote long elegant posture and graceful flowing movement, and keep you centered and energized—all at the same time,” explains Jillian Hessel, a Los Angeles-based Pilates teacher with 26 years’ experience.

“I find that many people are successfully losing weight with Pilates because they become much more aware of their bodies, and in turn, treat them better and make better food choices,” adds Ana Cabán, a Pilates fitness expert who has

operated studios on both coasts.

After chatting with a panel of pros and diving into the fitness method’s history, we arrived at the top five ways to become trim and toned by practicing Pilates.

Bike Friendly Big Easy

nlike other cities in the U.S., during the fall and winter, Southeast Louisiana is a very comfortable place to walk and bike. It is fitting that institutions, agencies and nonprofits in the region are taking steps to support these modes of transportation and the infrastructure that encourages them.

I n m i d - D e c e m b e r, B i k e E a s y launched its incident mapping program in collaboration with NOLA Social Ride, a group that bicycles in different neighborhoods of New Orleans every Thursday evening. On Dec. 15, the City Council passed a “Complete Streets” policy, which tweaks the design of city streets to promote pedestrian- and bikefriendly elements.

Th e L o u i s i a n a D e p a r t m e n t o f Transportation and Development has a “Complete Streets” policy in place, but New Orleans is the first to enact a policy at the municipal level in Louisiana. The measure passed unanimously, with some amendments that made it even stronger.

This indicates its widespread support, said

Also in the past month, Aflac and Bike Easy teamed up to offer discounts to Bike Easy members to get discounts on accident insurance. This insurance coverage is normally $30 to $50 a month, Wine said, and is fairly simple because there is no deductible, no network and no copayments. If and when an insured is involved in an accident or crash, he or she goes to their chosen doctor to get treatment and the company sends a check to cover the expense.

“This will give [bikers] more peace of mind because they have the insurance they need when they need it,” wine said. He also noted that the more bikers on the road, the lower the crash rate because vehicles become more aware of bikers and get used to them out there.

Many times, though, driver-biker incidents can be thwarted through signage or infrastructure changes say, at a given intersection. With that in mind, the Thursday night bicycle club NOLA Social Ride has volunteered its members to help with an online mapping project where riders can report the location of incidents as they happen. The map was launched on the Bike Easy website in mid-December.

The purpose of the project is to collect the data necessary to go to the city to request specific changes to the infrastructure at certain “hot-spots” to help reduce crashes, which will further protect bikers and pedestrians and generally make the city streets a safer environment for all travelers, whatever mode of transport they use.

eterinarians that practice a holistic approach appreciate that traditional Western schooling equips them to use antibiotics and other drugs to lessen troubling symptoms, but they also ask: “Do drugs vanquish the root of the problem? Why do so many patients return with new symptoms that suggest the need for more drugs? Are permanent health and healing possible?”

Traditional Eastern Practices

While Western medicine has traditionally focused on fixing the parts of the animal that are not functioning normally, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses on systematically restoring what is out of balance and affecting the quality of an animal’s life as a whole.

This ancient method of treating illness uses acupuncture alongside other modalities such as acupressure, massage, nutrition, herbs, exercise and meditation. TCM practitioners believe that health can be defined as a state of harmony; if the body moves out of harmony with itself and the external environment, dis-ease and energy stagnation occur. TCM aims to unblock this stagnation and return the body to harmony and health.

Although acupuncture has been used to treat humans for some 5,000 years, the first recorded application to an animal was about 3,500 years ago, when an elephant was treated for stomach bloat. Treatment of farm

animals in rural China and Korea soon followed, but written evidence of its use on household pets has been documented only from the 20th century. From the Latin acus, meaning “needle,” and pungere, meaning “to pierce,” practitioners place tiny, thin, sterile needles under the skin at precise points, with the intention of moving chi (pronounced CHEE) around the body to prevent or treat disease.

In 1974, The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society was founded to help educate and direct veterinarians in integrating TCM and acupuncture into their practices. The society has since become the premier governing and licensing body for veterinary acupuncturists, with more than 500 licensed practitioners in the United States alone.

It’s vital to note that because most states classify acupuncture as a surgical procedure, it can only be legally practiced by a licensed veterinarian certified in acupuncture. These same states often similarly restrict the practice of acupressure (applying pressure to acupuncture points, instead of placing needles, to move energy around in the body). This is important to understand, because if a pet owner engages an unlicensed, non-certified practitioner, he or she will not be able to file a complaint with the state veterinary medical board if a mistake is made that harms the animal.

Find a Qualified Practitioner

When to Consider Acupuncture Veterinary acupuncture is used to treat conditions ranging from muscle injuries and paralysis to arthritis and neurologic, gastrointestinal and reproductive disorders. It is also frequently used as a maintenance procedure for healthy, athletic animals that participate in performance competitions. Many thoroughbred racehorses, for example, receive regular treatments.

Veterinary acupuncturists develop and implement treatment plans based upon each animal’s needs, including the recommended frequency of treatment, plus the anatomical points that must be stimulated for successful outcomes.

Dealing with acute problems usually involves more frequent treatments in initial stages that then taper off within a few weeks.

While any illness or health problem can be treated using acupuncture alone, if a pet experiences a chronic, recurring health issue, it will likely benefit from a TCM program that also includes complementary, customized, nutritional and behavioral modifications. Veterinary acupuncturists often recommend herbs and nutritional supplements to help improve overall health. The focus is always on achieving long-term balance and harmony and preventing future illness, while treating current ailments.

Depending on their specialized training, vets may introduce homotoxicology (combining homeopathy and acupuncture that injects sterile, homeopathic liquids into acupuncture points).
