nyone who’s ever looked in the mirror to see peeling, patchy, painfully dry skin knows that winter has an ugly side. It’s a cruel truth that, just as you’re planning to look your best for holiday parties and family gettogethers, the blistering indoor heat and outdoor cold begin conspiring to wreck your skin. This winter, keep your skin glowing through the stress by following a few basic tips. Re-Evaluate Your Makeup Choices As lush flowers give way to falling leaves, you’ll probably change the color of your foundation. This season, don’t just focus on color. Consider your foundation’s texture as well. Dewy skin is in this year, and foundation with a light, moisturized texture offers an additional benefit: it won’t dry out delicate winter skin. Steer clear of makeup with salicylic acid and other products designed to treat acne. If you have naturally dry skin, choose a hydrating foundation. But if you have oily or combination skin, winter weather can bring out the worst, yielding both acne and dry patches. Stick with an oil-free foundation with a dewy finish to prevent breakouts and keep your skin looking fresh.

The amount of makeup you wear can also affect your skin because more makeup means washing your face more frequently. Give your skin a breather day at least once a week, and consider using foundations with light coverage when you don’t have to have perfect skin. Makeup companies are increasingly marketing BB creams, which can moisturize and repair your skin while still offering natural-looking coverage. These products are ideal for a cozy night by the fire or a low-key afternoon shopping with friends. Combat Winter Skin With the Right Skin Care Your skin care routine can keep your skin clear of acne, but the wrong skin care routine can wreak havoc when the dry air of winter rears its ugly head. Choose the right products for your winter skin care arsenal and you’ll look great all season: • Face wash - If your skin isn’t acne-prone or oily, you don’t need to use a harsh face wash. Instead, stick with gentle, non-drying products. If you have dry skin, consider a hydrating face wash. For those cursed with oily or combination skin, scale back on drying products. Instead, stick to oil-free face washes and avoid excessively washing your face, which can actually cause your skin to produce more oil. Most people don’t need salicylic acid and other drying ingredients during the winter, but if you have acne and must use these products, switch to once a day or even every other day. • Exfoliation - Regular exfoliation is the secret ingredient in the recipe for avoiding patchy, peely skin. Exfoliate your skin with a grainy, non-drying face wash at least once a week. For added benefits, try a vibrating facial exfoliator alongsid your face wash. The Clarisonic Mia is an ideal choice. If your skin is unusually patchy or dry, amp up your routine and exfoliate two to three times a week. • Moisturizer - No matter what texture your skin is, you need a good moisturizer. Moisturize after you’ve washed your face and exfoliated, and switch to heavier, more emollient moisturizers during the winter. Moisturizers designed to target acne are typically bad choices during the winter months because they don’t provide adequate moisture and can dry your skin. Instead, choose an oilfree moisturizer if you have oily or combination skin. And if you struggle with chronic dry skin, moisturize twice a day – with a light moisturizer in the morning, and a heavy night cream before you go to bed. • Sun protection - The fact that you can’t feel the glorious rays of the sun beaming down on your body doesn’t mean they’re not still there. Sun damage can make your skin even drier, and will speed up the aging pro-

5

cess. Wear sun protection if you’re going to be outside or driving. For a faster morning routine, try a moisturizer or foundation that contains SPF. Take Care of Your Body Your skin provides important clues to what’s going on inside of your body. No matter how frequently you moisturize or how well you wash your face, your skin will suffer if you don’t take care of your body. Try these tips to stay healthy and glowing all winter long: • Consider a multivitamin - Vitamin E is particularly effective at keeping your skin glowing and healthy, and biotin can help support your skin, hair, and nails. • Get enough protein - Protein is key for maintaining healthy hair, skin, and nails because it helps your body

6

replace damaged cells. The CDC recommends 46 grams a day for women and 56 grams for men. • Scale back on the alcohol - If you’re going to lots of holiday parties, it can be tempting to drink your way through the season, but alcohol packs on the pounds and will dry out your skin. • Avoid crash diets - Instead, focus on eating healthy foods throughout the holiday season and allowing an occasional chance to “cheat” with a piece of cake or sumptuous dessert. Starving yourself can wreck your skin, and will leave you miserable all season. • Drink plenty of water - Water keeps your skin moisturized, and is a vital ingredient in the fight against dull winter skin.

t is not uncommon that people feel happiness is a roller coaster ride that is out of their control – one minute they’re elated and on top of the world and the next minute they’re down in the dumps with no rhyme or reason. These highs and lows can be especially prevalent during the gloomy winter months.

bus could be an opportunity to meet someone new at the bus stop. Or getting negative feedback from a coworker could be an opportunity to improve a new skill at work. The point is that even the seemingly worst experiences have something positive to teach us. You just need to find the right angle!

The good news is it doesn’t have to be this way! Happiness is well within your reach and believe it or not, it can be under your control. We’ve compiled five simple tips to take control of your happiness and kick those blues this winter season:

being active releases endorphins, the happiness chemical, so we’re certainly not encouraging you to stop doing these activities – they’re essential to being happy. However, cramming too much into a day can be a major source of stress and unhappiness. We advise to do less each day by focusing only on the most essential items on your “to do” list. Not only will this give you more time to enjoy the things you love, but it will actually make you more productive in the long run, because you will have more energy when it’s time to get down to business.

Tip #1 – Be mindful. Research shows that being

aware of our own thoughts and emotions can boost happiness. Simply by identifying and acknowledging the way we’re feeling eases the tension and allows us the time to react in a different way. So when your mind starts to wander and take off with a negative thought, don’t react; instead stop and observe how you’re feeling, paying close attention to your breath. Your stress levels will drop in seconds!

Tip #2 – Reframe it. When it comes down to it, happiness is really a choice; a choice that we each make hundreds of times a day in how we choose to react to experiences that are out of our control. Instead of defaulting to a negative emotion the next time something doesn’t go your way, try to reframe your perception of the event. For instance, missing a

Tip #3 – Do less. Of course we all know that exercise and

Tip #4 – Get social. Humans are social creatures and

research has found that being social is a key ingredient to happiness. So whatever you’re doing, do it with others. You can even get creative and join a fun sports, arts, book or culture club to stay connected.

Tip #5 – Fake it till you make it. Ever heard the phrase

“Fake it till you make it”? Well, getting happy and maintaining that feeling starts with this simple philosophy. The reason is.

n a world where everything is skinny, here comes Skinny Bags. I had a chance to meet with the creator of Skinny Bags Elena. As a Russian Native she loves fashion and clutches is her thing. These supple leather clutches are a hit with celebs and anyone who loves having a more personalized accessory. Skinny Bags was launched in 2013. The very highest quality leather is used and everything is made in the U.S.A. Supporting the local L.A fashion industry is important to the founder and creator of Skinny Bags. The best part about these clutches is that you can customize them with color and logo on the front! Have a favorite saying? Is there a book that describes who you are? Is there a Coco Channel line that you always repeat? Have it customized on your clutch! This is your own personal piece of character that you can take around with you. These fashionable clutches look like a book, which is what makes it so desirable. I was able to play around with the clutch itself and the room inside is amazing!

ou may not have noticed, but the 1980s are over! So throw away your shoulderpadded neon one-piece ski suit and headband this season and take note - the times, they are a changing and that includes ski fashion. To help you get a head start, we’ve put together the top 5 tips for looking the part on the slops this ski season.

Make a statement with bold colors Lady and gentlemen shredders alike are hitting the powder this year decked out in bold colored pants. The idea is to select vibrant colored ski pants and then pair them with a neutral color on the top, like white, silver, or black for example. This contrast makes that deep hue pop and warrants extra attention.

Go versatile for cool après wear Any skier knows it can be a drag to get off the slopes and have to change into new clothes before cracking a cold one. So why not skip that step? These days, the look is to make your ski gear versatile enough so you can simply switch gears into après mode and look good without a change of clothes. The key is to dress in fashionable layers – a base layer (made by UnderArmour), a mid-layer (like a Patagonia Fleece Vest) and outer wear (like Salomon’s funky soft shells).

14

Jazz up your goggles These days ski goggles are more than just a practicality – they’re a fashion statement and just the accessory to complete any sweet ski look. Go for goggles with fun patterns and standout colors on the lens or band to add that cherry on top.

Baggy is back, well slightly baggy That’s right…the days of skin-tight leggings are out. These days, it’s not just the boarders who’re wearing their pants a little loose. Top skiers are looking for a little legroom in their ski pants too. We’re not talking super baggy down to the crack, but just enough to give off the image of being cool, calm and collected. Check out Spyder’s Troubmaker Pants for men or KJUS Revolution Pants for women.

Mainstream is on the back burner Over the past few years a number of small mom and pop ski companies have hit the scene, making it all the rage to stand out with a not so well-known logo or brand. Some new names that might make an appearance on the mountain this year include companies like Loki, who builds mittens right into hoodies, Flylow that designs skiwear specifically for the backcountry artist, and Deviation, a new ski company that customizes ski graphics just for you.

very once in a while you meet someone who brightens your day just by hanging out with them. This day it was Mircea Monroe. While shooting for the Jan issue we had fun with the CW star on Heart of Dixie. We never laughed so hard while working. Mircea is full of life and her laugh is absolutely infectious. She feels so blessed to be where she is that her humility makes her even more likable. We had a chance to speak to her about her cute boyfriend, her fearless adventure seeking , the fact that her Father worked for the U.N and where she sees herself in five years… yes babies in the “tum tum” as she puts it, is definitely on the “To Do” list. We are so happy that Mircea made us laugh all day, because of that we got some amazing photos that allowed her inner beauty to shine through. Thanks for letting us in Mircea, keep laughing and loving! Enjoy the interview and gorgeous photos everyone!

Can you tell us about your new movie “Dumbbells” slated for 2014? What character do you play? It’s a really silly, funny movie written by a couple of friends. There’s a great comedic cast. I play a snotty cheerleader... I’m super good at that. Tell us what it is like to have a Father that works for the United Nations? Where have you lived? What was your favorite country? At a young age did you understand the importance of your fathers job? We lived primarily in Fiji and the Solomon Islands, but traveled all over the world (Thailand, Singapore, Japan...). It gave me a strong foundation and deep understanding of various cultures and religions. I think that’s really important to understand we’re all connected and how small this great big world really is. It actually makes you feel less alone, less selfish and more at one.

When did you decide to movie to LA and pursue acting? Virginia is a long way away. How did your family take it? I was 18 or 19 and drove across the country by myself without knowing anyone. Looking back I kind of can’t believe the life I’ve made from that girl who had no connections or money, and a barely working car. How did you meet your boyfriend who is also a writer and producer for Justified on FX? We were set up by a mutual friend. Our friend was right- he’s the best. We just moved in together so my vision board must be working. How do the both of you handle being in the same industry? Is it tough being with someone who has the same kind of hectic schedule? It’s actually great. He’s has a nice steady schedule on Justified and writes other amazing stuff on the side....We understand each other, which is nice. The problem is with scheduling any kind of trip. Also, I tend to turn down work that will take me away for too long cause I really love smooches and cuddles. Tell us about working with Matt Leblanc and Rachel Bilson on Heart of Dixie? Has the cast become close friends? On episodes we shoot on location and that always breeds close relationships. Matt and Rachel are both great people and great friends.

You have had a successful career so far; did you think that things would transpire so quickly? What has helped you stay so grounded? I feel really grateful to be where I am and am very aware of how lucky I am to support myself doing what I love. How do you prepare for an audition or show? Any tricks that help you get and stay in Character? I always do the work. The reading and studying and research. Once you build the house, you get to live in it. Oooooo that’s a good one! Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Will Heart of Dixie still be on the air? Oh man that makes me sweat. Future talk!! I know I’ll still be deeply fulfilled. Even more so, because I’m always working on myself, which means work, and life keep getting better. The only difference is that there may be some babies up in my tum tum.

28

29

If you could work with any actor past or present who would it be and what kind of movie would you two be in? Grace Kelly in a fabulously glamorous old film. Do you see failure as part of the process? Many actors can’t handle it. How have you accepted that in your life? Failure is part of life regardless of your career. The more you embrace that, the farther you can fall and more you’ll grow. It’s not bad to fail; it’s bad to think failing means something bad. Your in amazing shape. What is your routine and diet. Are you an outdoor person or gym rat? Thanks for the compliment! I can’t stand working out. Like, really really really don’t like those first

30

few steps of getting to the gym. However, there is no better feeling than the completion. I don’t diet. Period. But I love taking care of my body. It feels good to eat well and once you make it a lifestyle, it’s easy. I love working out outside whenever possible, but sometimes it’s easier to get to the gym at a specific time for a class. I prefer to take a class if I’m inside. You have an amazing and infectious sense of humor, how are you able to be so funny in such a tough industry? That’s so kind! Humor is a life savior. Without it, I’d surely die. And acting is tough and can make you really question yourself sometimes, but there are a lot of people with much tougher jobs. I hope they get to laugh a lot. If you had one lasting thing written on your tombstone what would it be? Thank You.

londe beautiful and beastie, Cara Quici is certainly rocking the show in the new video for her single Fight which features Dennis Rodman. The Texan singer/songwriter brings us a slamming version of the Beastie Boys hit Fight for Your Right (To Party) in her own sexy style – no VW badges in sight! It’s no surprise the video reached over a million views upon release in just two weeks. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas Quici has performed all her life singing and dancing, acting and modeling. Leaving her small Texas town for the bright lights of NYC and later Los Angeles she is now firmly in the spotlight taking inspiration and attitude from her icons Blondie star Debbie Harry and Queen of Pop, Madonna. Her first single ‘Away From You’ which she co-wrote reached the 27th spot on the Dance Billboard charts, ‘Fight’ looks certain to top that and be a smash hit. ‘Fight’ will be available on iTunes 01/21/14!

40

QUICK FACTS When did your enthusiasm for singing start?

HOMETOWN: Corpus Christi, Texas

From wee little I remember not being able to live without music. I was raised in a very musical family, so it was always a part of my life and is only natural for me.

INSPIRATION: Life

What was life like in Corpus Christi Texas? Life in Corpus Christi is great because it’s a beach town! My family also owns a pro-sound and lighting business, that also sells DJ equipment, so it’s always fun hanging out at our family business, as my entire family works there. DJ’s are always popping by and our shop is always testing out equipment by playing really loud music!

PHRASE THAT SUMS YOU UP: Why reach for the stars, when there are footprints on the moon! FAVORITE SINGER / ARTIST: There are so many artists I love, so it’s too hard to mention just 1 fav! WHAT COULD YOU NOT BE WITHOUT: Rosebud salve lip balm RULES YOU ABIDE BY: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

Who are you thankful to for getting where you are today? Myself of course, for being strong, breaking down walls, and never giving up! Also, I’m thankful for my manager Darwin Ortiz of Darwin World Media. I have worked with him for 10 years and he never stopped believing in me! Even through the roughest of times he always saw the artist and passion in me and fought for it. Tell us how your new single ‘’FIGHT” came about? I wanted to do something that really expressed the “Fight” I experience while growing in the music industry, by never taking NO for an answer, and fighting for my dreams, rights and passions! However, the writing in ‘Fight’ is overall general topics that everyone can relate to fighting for. I even threw in some girl power!!! Were you familiar with Beastie Boys? What made you choose this track? Of course! When I was 14 I won a dance competition in LA, for a dance I choreographed myself, and then performed, to the Beastie Boys hit “Body Movin’” The beat in that track is undeniable! So naturally, this track brought me back to my days of jamming to The Beastie Boys. How did Dennis Rodman come about being in the fight video? Dennis Rodman threw a bash in NYC for me, which was my official ‘Fight’ release party! He is very supportive of the track and of course, Dennis is such a big partier so having him release the track was truly the perfect match!

41

How do you keep fit?

find the time. It’s important to rejuvenate yourself.

I workout 3 times a week! However, before a big photo shoot I work out 3-5 times a week. I do cardio, weights, abs, and leg lifts, which really keep my thighs in great shape!

Any touring in your plans?

How would you explain your fashion style and what items in your closet can you not be without. I love couture designs and am always up to try new things in the fashion world! I have two sides of me, so I love classy New York chic styles, along with edgy designs. Combining those styles can also be fun! Do you manage to take time out for yourself and if so, what do you get up to? I really have to manage to find time for myself these days, but I do believe it’s very important to do so! Working out or bubble baths are always time to myself, but I love to eat a tasty brunch followed by a massage when I

42

Yes, of course! I really want to make sure my next tour is the RIGHT fit for me, my music and my fans. I’ve actually turned down a few tours recently because my team and I, as well as my fans, are busy building my single ‘Fight’ on TOP 40 Radio at the moment. We are all working towards pushing ‘Fight’ high up the charts! Next year, we will reassess my tour opportunities because it has to be a super SPECIAL tour for my fans! Therefore, it’s worth waiting for. What’s next for you? Well, I am very excited that ‘Fight’ will be available on iTunes January 21, 2014! Also, I am busy writing, recording and going through mixes of songs in my EP, due out next year! Both things are ultra special for me because I’ve worked SO HARD ON THEM!!!

Many people don’t realize that DJing goes back as far as 1909 .How does it feel to know that you are one of today’s top DJ talents with a lot of history behind you? It’s bizarre to think about how long DJs have really been around. I bet there are a lot of DJs that would tell you it began around the 50s, 60s, or 70s by their definition of what a DJ actually does. I’m actually honored to be able to be part of a profession that has evolved continuously through decades of change and has proven to be stable & solid in each different path that music follows. It reminds me that music will always be relevant regardless of how the industry changes and the need for DJs will always be there. It doesn’t matter how much technology grows, music will find a way to parallel the changes and grow with it keeping the demand for DJs in tact as well.

44

Although the world of DJing goes back 104 years women really were not known as DJ’s until Annie Nightingale showed up as the first female DJ in 1970, who ironically is still on the air; How do you

think female DJ’s are fairing today compared to the last 40 years? I wasn’t around in the 70s, being born in the 80s, & I don’t remember much of the 80s either. Nonetheless, I can only imagine what it was like from stories I have read or heard. Annie Nightingale has lived such a phenomenal life, it is unbelievable. I think that female DJ’s today are capable of accomplishing a successful career the same way the male DJ’s are. Where in the 70s & 80s certain actions by women weren’t approved of, in today’s day & age they may be both accepted & even appreciated. Yet, I think that goes to be said with a lot of once considered minorities, professions, choices, and beliefs. It is hard to consider 2014 to 1974. Due to evolution, education, understanding, and experience, we may live on the same ground, but we don’t necessarily have to have the same frame of mind. It is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt. Anyhow, as a female DJ, I feel confident & capable chasing to accomplish my dreams & goals, even if they are the exact same as one of my male counterparts, without question or limitation.

Is it much more acceptable for female DJ’s nowadays? Do your male counterparts give you the props you deserve for what you do? I’ve heard a lot of my female DJ friends or acquaintances tell me stories of the lack of respect they have gotten from their male counterparts. However, I haven’t really had the same experiences. From day 1, most of the people around me have been extremely supportive & some have even told me stories about defending me to others. With that being said, I don’t think I let myself notice the negativity. I think that female DJs are more easily accepted nowadays. On top of that, most male DJs are becoming used to the idea & even collaborating with us to all rise to the top together instead of seeing it as any type of competition or threat. I’ve been fortunate to have a really great group of guys around me lifting me up & not putting me down in this crazy industry. Haha! When you had started DJing as a teen who were the DJs you looked up to? The first DJ battle that I remembered seeing as a kid was when I was 12. I saw DJ A-Trak win DMC. I was blown away. Plus, being a teenager & boy crazy… I thought he was really cute being only a few years older than me. Haha! The next couple years, I saw DJ Craze take the championship. To this day, both of them are still in my starting lineup of my favorite DJs with A-Trak being my favorite. I went back & learned about DJ Rectangle, QBert, Slyce, Grandmaster Roc Raida, Mix Master Mike, the list goes on. I was mesmerized & infatuated. Have you DJ’d internationally ? IF so where and what was the event? I’ve been at a few different clubs in a few different countries; however, I am really looking forward to bringing in the new year in Singapore. Apparently, it is going to be warm there, so it will be like a huge summertime party out here. The event is called Siloso Beach Party & the website is www.silosobeachparty.com. When you get up on that stage and the crowd is ready with so much energy what does that do to you? Does the crowd sway your mood that night and what you will play? As soon as I get ready to drop my first record of the night, my adrenalin is already starting to kick itself into overdrive. Words cannot express justly how I feel. I love it. I’m in love with it! Seeing smiling faces, hands in the air, people jumping around… What’s not to love? The crowd definitely controls my mood. I feel as though I feed off of their energy & what I decide to play will direct all of us for the rest of the night. Reading the crowd, to me, is the most important part of DJing. Being able to

45

tell what direction they want me to go with the music to keep their energy at a 10 is determined by their actions & reactions alone with my ability to notice both of them as they come. If you could DJ any event in the world what would it be? I’m not even sure if this event has DJs, but if it did… It would be my dream event of choice. I would love to DJ at Carnival of Brazil. The energy & vibe alone make me crave experiencing it at least once. Aside from that, I would love to DJ an awards show like the Grammys or a huge fashion event like Fashion Week in NYC.

What goes into prepping for an event? Do you test out all your beats before getting on stage? Is each record planned? In order for me to prepare for an event, the most important details that I need to know are what the clients/ clubs want from me specifically & the environment of the venue/event. I think it is most important to please the audience & be aware of any boundaries that may be predetermined for an event; ex: knowing if an event or venue demands no explicit terminology are included in the music or certain specific genres be included in my set. Where can we catch DJ Adriana next?

What are some of your favorite beats? Who do you personally listen to when not working? How do you find the unknown artists that fit into your DJ-ing style? The music that I choose to listen to when I am “off work” varies so drastically. It all depends on what my environment is & how my last few days have been. Haha! If I have worked 3 nights straight in the night club, I may listen to some Sade, Whitney Houston, or Al Green that following morning while making my breakfast. If I am going into a few days back to back working, I may listen to Sirius BPM, Hip Hop Nation, or the Heat to get myself into the groove. If I’m on the train from LA to SD, I may just let iTunes radio pick what I am listening to & see if there are a few things that I haven’t heard yet. It really just depends. I love digging through blogs to find hidden talents & gems that I can put into my sets somehow. I will also have friends who send me their own tracks or tracks their friends put together & when I listen to them, I’m blown away. When you hear something that you just know is amazing, you will find a way to break that record.

After spending the last few weeks of 2013 in Asia, I will be starting 2014 in the states. I’ll be in the northeast region, Miami & the southwest of course. All my events are updated in my calendar on my website. www.oxAdriana.com What does it mean to be voted #1 Vegas DJ last year? What has that done for your career? Being recognized for the DJ awards in Vegas was a huge honor. It has really shown me that even when I don’t know people are watching, they are. Vegas is such a huge market for DJs, if not one of the biggest. I feel as though every DJ I know wants the opportunity to work there & being acknowledged as one of the best in any form was mind blowing. As far as what it has done for my career that I can tell, it has made my name known to some that may have overlooked it before. That alone is huge. I get compliments from music directors, managers, owners, or other DJs that I never thought I would before. Who would have thought? It truly is a dream come true.

Oh, (bundle of) joy! In 2013 we watched some very famous ladies become mommies for the first time. And our hearts melted. You must agree that becoming a mother, at any age, is possibly the best feeling ever. But, unlike normal ladies (you and me, for example), these new mommies dealt with continuous pressure from the paparazzi looking for scoops on their pre-maman fashion style, how fast their bellies were growing, or how many pounds they were piling. Tough, wouldn’t you say? Here are eight proud and famous moms that introduced us in 2013 to their new born babies. Admit it, you followed them in the glossies this year just like I did, right? I personally loved all these cute babies, and I truly hope that 2014 will be at least as exciting! Babies are always a blessing, so keep ‘em coming, ladies and gents!

The world’s most famous 2013 mommy, our favorite English rose blossomed into a beautiful mama who looked amazing throughout her maternity period. She gave birth on July 22 to a perfect-looking baby boy named George Alexander Louis, and this royal birth, just like the royal wedding of George’s parents, created unprecedented social media frenzy. The Duchess got back fast in tip top shape, to the delight (and despair) of many young moms fighting their post-baby extra pounds. Starting next year I will be waiting for the announcement of the second royal cutie!

Possibly as famous as the previous mommy, Kim kept the media wide awake during her pregnancy. From the moment her rapper boyfriend, Kanye West, announced the audience during one of his concerts that Kim was his “baby mama”, the star of E!’s reality show “Keeping up with the Kardashians” was in the public eye more than ever. Often criticized for her particular choice of maternity outfits, Kim defied conventions and, from her extremely tight-fitting dresses to her baby’s name, she managed to wow the worldwide media pretty much. She gave birth on June 15 to North West, a sweet baby girl.

The world welcomed on August 29 a baby boy with very famous (and good looking, might I add) parents: Axl Jack, first son of singer Fergie and actor Josh Duhamel. The little one had us at his first public photo where he was flaunting an irresistible smile that recalled his mother a lot. Born in such an artistic family, I am only curious if Axl (cool rock’n roll name, right?) is going to become a child star soon. We won’t be questioning where he’s got the talent from!

Swedish actress Malin Akerman tasted the sweetness of motherhood for the first time in 2013 when she gave birth to a little boy. Malin and her husband, Roberto Zincone, welcomed cute Sebastian on April 16, but sadly split some months after, after six years of marriage. I am sure that Sebastian, with that amazing little face, is going to help his mommy forget all her troubles every time he throws a smile at her.

51

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star and comedian boyfriend Dax Shepard welcomed Lincoln Bell Shepard, their first baby girl, on March 28. The two actors finally got married this October, only after the same-sex marriage was made legal in California, and are totally in love with their little daughter who is another Hollywood baby with great acting potential.

When a hot-looking couple decides to have a baby, the result can only be overwhelming! On January 22 pretty Colombian singer Shakira and her Spanish beau, football player Gerard Piqué, gave the planet one of the most adorable baby boys ever: Milan. With big brown eyes, full lips and lots of dark hair the couple’s bundle of joy is already proving to be a little heartbreaker. Whether he decides to become a singer or a footballer, Milan will definitely win a lot of hearts in his life. He is a stunner!

52

Extravagant model Amber Rose always attracted attention with her unconventional public appearances. In 2013 she seems to have found total bliss, first giving birth on February 21 to a beautiful baby boy named Sebastian Taylor Thomaz, second becoming the wife of her famous baby daddy, rapper Wiz Khalifa. One of the most famous blonde ladies with a buzz cut, Amber keeps active on social media channels, delighting her fans with images of her new family.

On October 6, beautiful model and actress Jamie King and her handsome hubby, film director Kyle Newman, became first-time proud parents to a little wonder named James Knight. The toddler’s first Instagram photo earned him a lot of fans who unanimously decided that James had his mama’s eyes and an irresistible sweet face. The ‘Hart of Dixie’ star admitted that great genes helped her get her post-pregnancy body back in shape pretty fast and confessed to still adjusting to her new role.

P

ark City, Utah is movie magic at its finest. From Jan 16-26 some of the finest young filmmakers in the world will submit films on a limited budget for the chance to make a name for themselves. There is not huge boxoffice budget for these filmmakers. Most are students and independent filmmakers with a brilliant idea for a film. Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute said, “That the Festival has evolved and grown as it has over the past 30 years is a credit to both our audiences and our artists, who continue to find ways to take risks and open our minds to the power of story. This year's films and artists promise to do the same.” For the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, 118 featurelength films were selected, representing 37 countries and 54 first-time filmmakers, including 34 in competition. These films were selected from 12,218 submissions (72 more than for 2013), including 4,057 featurelength films and 8,161 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,014 were from the U.S. and 2,043 were international. 97 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres; according to Sundance Press releases. With this much talent and enthusiasm about filmmaking you can see why there is so much excitement that is generated this time of year in Utah.

The Sundance Film Institute has become a necessary part of filmmaking since Robert Redford began the institute in 1981 as “a global, nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to nurturing artistic expression in film and theater, and to supporting intercultural dialogue between artists and audiences. The Institute promotes independent storytelling to unite, inform and inspire, regardless of geo-political, social, religious or cultural differences. Internationally recognized for its annual Sundance Film Festival and its artistic development programs for directors, screenwriters, producers, film composers, playwrights and theatre artists.”

How important is Sundance? Well, did you know that without Sundance we would have never had the pleasure of some of the most Iconic movies of our day like Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station, Little Miss Sunshine, An Education, sex, lies, and videotape, Reservoir Dogs, The Cove, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, An Inconvenient Truth, Precious, and Napoleon Dynamite.

I look forward to seeing the amazing films that come out of Sundance this year. We will be sure to see a few of them on the big screen in the next year.

or many people, once the winter sets in, so do the couch potato blues. I know, I know…it can be challenging to get outside and bare the cold all for the sake of a 30 minute workout. So, you punt and tell yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Well after a lot of “tomorrows” add up, it’s no wonder why research shows that adults pack on the most pounds during the winter season as a result. But what if you had something fun to do that didn’t seem like such a chore? We’ve compiled a list of some of the most fun winter sports that you can partake in to beat those winter blues and stay in tip-top shape this winter.

64

1. Skiing – Who doesn’t have fun skiing?! You’re

4. Ice skating – We’re not talking doing triple aeri-

out in the crisp air with friends, taking in the great mountain vistas on the way up the chair and swooshing down the slopes with a rush of adrenaline on the way down. By the end of the day, you’ve earned your après beverage and plate of nachos because you’ve likely burned 400 calories per hour! That’s right, skiing is one of the most calorie-intensive winter sports and it’s fun making it a win-win for you. Even if you don’t live near the slopes, plan a winter ski trip or two over a long weekend to stay in shape.

al spins here. We’re talking about strapping on a pair of skates and taking to a frozen lake or public rink and gliding around on the ice for up to an hour. Ice skating is a great activity for young and old alike – it works out the entire body from gluts and quads to the core and upper body and can be a great aerobic workout that also builds strength. Plus, it improves balance and coordination and burns nearly 350 calories an hour!

2. Snowshoeing – Do you love the great outdoors but feel it’s too inaccessible in the winter? Well, it’s not if you have a pair of snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a great winter activity and it’s just like hiking in the summer except more challenging since trekking through the snow adds more resistance. It’s a great way to experience the peaceful serenity of winter and believe me you’ll be sweating in no time. A moderate to vigorous snowshoe hike can burn up to 500 calories per hour.

5. Indoor Leagues – If you’re dead set against venturing into the cold and really can’t stand going to the gym day in and day out, no worries – you still have options! Find an indoor sports league in your town in a sport of your choosing, such as soccer, field hockey, tennis, etc. You name it and it’s very likely that a local school or municipality is offering it. Not only will you keep in shape, but indoor leagues are a great way to meet new people.

3. Take a class – Sick of hitting the treadmill every day? Well check out a class offered at your local gym if you feel you’re getting in a routine funk. These days gyms offer such a wide variety of classes, there truly is something for everyone to change it up from time to time. Try yoga, spinning, dance aerobics, strength training, kick boxing, etc. to see what works best for you.

Buddy up to Lose Weight & Reach your New Years Health & Fitness Resolutions!

S

ince the beginning of time, people have been making New Years resolutions - promises to begin doing something good OR promises to stop doing a bad behavior at the start of each new year. New Years resolutions date back to the ancient Babylonians, who on the first day of the year would promise “the gods” that they would pay off their debts of borrowed objects and money. Today, the most common New Years resolutions include losing weight, exercising regularly, eating healthier, getting into better shape and spending more time with loved ones. Surveys also indicate that the reason most people often fail at their New Years resolutions, is because they rely solely on willpower alone to stick to their promises and to reach their goals. The secret to successfully sticking to your resolutions, may in fact be to share your goals and mutual accountability of your promises with another individual. Frank Ra, Author of “A Course in Happiness” states, “Resolutions are more sustainable when shared, both in terms of with whom you share the benefits of your resolution, and with whom you share the path of maintaining your resolution. Peer-support makes a difference in success rate with new year’s resolutions.”

So what does this mean to you and to your weight-loss, health and fitness goals? It means this year, buddy up on your New Years weight-loss resolutions! Find a someone with whom you can clearly establish your New Years goals and begin to turn your goals, resolutions and promises into a reality. Choose a loved one, friend or family member, with whom you can mutually motivate to reach your New Years resolutions. Since the most common New Years resolution is to lose weight and get into shape, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find that person! If one of your resolutions is to spend more time with a loved one, this is also a great way to do that! By finding a “buddy” who shares your health and fitness goals, you are already on the path to success. You and your fitness buddy are more likely to beat the odds that you will succeed because you have each other to motivate, challenge, encourage and see the goals through, from concept to fruition. Once you’ve found your buddy, follow these simple guidelines together, to reach your goals:

67

Write down your weight-loss goals in pounds, inches and body fat. Be specific. Be realistic. You are NOT going to lose two inches off of your waist in two weeks. Determine your weight-loss goals and if necessary, consult a professional who can verify your goals and develop a plan that is safely realistic in the time frame you have allotted. Share your plan with your fitness buddy so that you are both aware of the other’s total weight-loss and fitness goals. Together with your fitness buddy, determine your exercise schedule. How many days a weeks will you and your buddy go to the gym? What time will you meet to exercise? Again, be specific. Stick to a solid schedule. Are there classes you might want to take together? Write down your commitment to exercise together regularly. Hold each other accountable to each and every day of exercise. Make smart dietary choices. What are your eating habits and what is your vice? In other words, how do you eat? How much do you eat? How often do you eat? What do you eat that is unhealthy? Your buddy may not share the same dietary concerns as you, but that’s ok. Start with your “vices.” What, if any, poor food choices are getting in the way of your weight-loss goals? Maybe you have a sweet tooth or a constant craving for sugar? Maybe it’s chocolate? Buttered bread? Salty chips? Whatever your vices are, together, you and your buddy can write down those items that must be eliminated from your diets, in order to achieve your goals. Be specific and hold the other accountable for eliminating those foods. It’s likely your fitness buddy is not going to share every meal with you, but you can start by determining what foods are taboo, as a team. Determine your power foods. Together with your buddy, make a list of power foods the two of you will incorporate into your diet daily. (For example: kale, spinach, fish, broccoli, asparagus). Keep a daily log of your diet and share it with your buddy every week. Hold each other accountable to a diet of power foods. Commit to going to the grocery store or farmers market together one day per week, and go power-food shopping. By grocery shopping together, neither buddy will be tempted to buy any of those tempting taboo treats on their “vice” list! Weigh-in every week - one day per week. Keep a weight-loss journal. Measure the inches on your waist,

68

hips and thighs every two-three weeks. Write down your progress. You and your buddy are meant to encourage each other at your weigh-ins, and offer congratulations and support. Realistically, some weeks will show great improvement, with a reduction in inches and weight-loss. Other weigh-ins will be more disappointing with possible temporary weight gain due to hormonal fluctuations, increased muscle mass, etc... Your buddy is there to encourage you and remind you of your realistic long-term goals, especially when the scale doesn’t change at weigh-in. It’s very important that the buddy you choose to share accountability in your New Years resolutions, is as committed as you to the task. The buddy system is proven to increase your odds of reaching your goals when this is the case. A study by the University of Scranton, outlined in the Journal of Clinical Psychology (Published: 12.13.2012), determined the percentage of Americans who are successful in achieving their resolution at only 8%. The study also found that people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. Therefore, it is important to be clear and specific about your goals. Don’t simply say you resolve to lose weight. State how much weight, how many inches, and how much body fat. Again, be specific. Finally, the study showed that the length of time people stuck to their resolutions dwindled over time, with 75% maintaining their resolution through the first week (the reason the gym is always crowded the first week of the new year), 64% maintained their resolution past one month, and 46% past six months. Be committed to the entire year and to a total lifestyle change. Looking for a quick weight-loss fix will surely throw you into the 75% one-week, short lived category of failed resolutions. You don’t want that! The bottom line is this: Together, you and your fitness buddy can be part of the 8% of Americans who achieve their New Years resolutions and who maintain their resolutions throughout the year! Be clear and realistic with your goals, hold each other accountable daily, follow the guidelines above and you will make it happen! You will also be glad you did.

hen most of us think of Ferrari, we think of the totally bonkers models like the Testarossa, the 458, and the more recent, and brilliantly innovative, albeit oddly named, leFerrari. Those Ferraris all fit the template of what a Ferrari is supposed to be. They all look great in red; all have big, powerful engines, and spaceship aesthetics. But there’s another Ferrari, one that defies expectations just as the leFerrari does, only in a different automotive niche. Indeed, it just may be that the most notable Ferrari currently in production is the one we all least expected: the FF (the first “F” representing “four-dour Ferrari;” the second, “four-wheel drive”). The FF goes where other cars in the Ferrari stable don’t. It’s comfy in tight, car-lined downtown streets. It’s got room for golf clubs or groceries – perhaps both. Oh and there’s seating for up to four full-grown adults. The FF’s even got more trunk space than that most bland of “FFs,” the Ford Focus.

By Todd Spear

69

Now that’s different for an Italian grand touring car

being marked by a ferocious exhaust grunt.

If you’re thinking, “But wait, don’t Ferraris need to be a little bit insane in the performance department?” you are correct. And the famed Italian automaker has you covered. The FF, you see, is an acceleration monster. It hammers out more than 650 horsepower thanks to its brutish engine and innovative all-wheel-drive system. It’s also the, according to its makers, the world’s fastest four-seat car. And yes, it is a hatchback.

The car has a relatively “big” passenger cabin, but Ferrari has managed to keep the FF quite fast on its feet, thanks to its all-wheel-drive design. The FF’s all-wheeldrive system, in true Ferrari form, doesn’t work like a normal one. In most cars, an all-wheel system limits power or brakes individual wheels to maintain stability. The Ferrari FF design actually boosts power to the front axle during cornering, thereby eliminating understeer in the process.

But it’s no average hatchback. A new horse struts in the Ferrari stable The Ferrari FF is a three-door car like no other currently on the market. At the heart of the FF is a 6.3-liter twelvecylinder Ferrari engine that is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The result is mechanical output of 503-lbs. per foot, spread across all four wheels, making it the first Ferrari road car to do so. The transmission, as noted by many drivers, is particularly rewarding on the downshift, with each such shift

70

The Ferrari FF has a zero-to-60 mph time of about 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph. That’s a faster maximum speed than the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, and Lamborghini Aventador. Those cars are surely faster from light-to-light, but the all-wheel-drive of the FF is by all accounts superior to even that of Porsche, as Ferrari’s own snow-covered test track proved in initial testing. The FF is a Ferrari for all seasons as much as it is a car for all occasions.

Italian style – in a wagon?

exactly what it should be.

The most striking feature of the Ferrari FF is its hatchback body. The front half, through the doors, looks just as we’ve all come to expect from a Ferrari. The nose looks quite a bit like that of the Ferrari f12Berlinetta. But from the door handles to the back of the car, it’s a whole new world. The body of the FF is, frankly, more like what we think of as a “wagon,” than what we would call a “hatchback.” But it’s a damn cool-looking wagon, nonetheless.

Inside the cabin, the four-seat format is decked out in premium hides throughout. What’s more, the seats have actual space around them, meaning that you can really fit four adults inside the cabin. And the trunk is big enough for all those people’s luggage, too.

The FF is noticeably more wagon-like than the more coupe-ish looking 612 Scaglietti that it replaces. By anyone’s account, the FF is a major step up from its predecessor, when it comes to appearances, though both new and old models are about the same size. The FF is 193.2 –inches in length, 54.3-inches in height, 73-inches wide, and has a 117.7-inch wheelbase. The FF’s chassis is made from aluminum and is designed with rigidity in mind. Nonetheless, the body is said to be 10-percent lighter than its predecessors. The front of the car is marked with the usual Ferrari badge and familiar “egg crate” grille evident on several recent Ferrari models. The smooth, sloping body lines are classic Ferrari until they are interrupted with the bulbous, hatchback tail end. For what it is, though, it still looks great. Sure it’s a hatch, but it’s one that’s unmistakably “Ferrari.” It’s not a supercar, of course, but it’s
