Letter from John Levy, Board President I have yet to meet a nonprofit organization with a bad mission. Organizations are led by well-meaning people trying to provide a needed service or program to people in the community. Unfortunately, good intentions alone do not mean these services or programs will be effective or efficiently run. After all, the lack of a solid organizational infrastructure can negatively impact the organization and ultimately the people they are trying to serve. NAM helps organizations build a solid infrastructure. While NAM’s work may not be sexy, it is undoubtedly needed. On a daily basis, I witness how an organization involved with NAM is stronger and thus better able to work with or help their client base. It is with NAM’s assistance that an organization can fulfill its mission.

Letter from Anne Hindery, CEO Our mission at the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands (NAM) is to strengthen the collective voice, leadership, and capacity of nonprofit organizations to enrich the quality of community life throughout Nebraska and Western Iowa. This year the NAM team has been hard at work, pursuing our mission, for YOU! Every Nebraskan and Iowan benefits from a nonprofit every day and 1 in 11 are employed by a nonprofit. We want to make sure all nonprofits have the best resources to serve their communities. A few highlights of note for 2018: Co-hosted the first annual Nebraska Nonprofit Conference in Kearney, Nebraska with a sold out crowd; expanded the NAM 403(b) retirement plan to more than 70 nonprofits; grew our Financial Management Services program with quality accounting staff to help our members and offered CEU’s for our Squeaky Clean HR series. We could not be successful without our generous supporters and board members. A special thank you to our nonprofit member organizations. It’s their work that makes our communities the best places to live, work and raise our families.

GUIDELINES • BEST PRACTICE

Guidelines and Principles The Guidelines and Principles for Nonprofit Excellence (G&P) is a toolkit that supports nonprofits in Nebraska and Iowa as they work to maximize the efficiency, transparency and accountability of their operations so they can concentrate on their mission. The purpose of the Guidelines and Principles is threefold: 1) to provide nonprofit organizations a state-specific tool to evaluate compliance, enhance strategic planning, and refine operations; 2) to support the growth and quality of the sector; and 3) to increase the public’s understanding of the role and value of the nonprofit sector. Since G&P was launched, 635 organizations have used the tool. COMING SOON Guidelines and Principles 2.0! The NEW Guidelines and Principles will feature a user-friendly, streamlined experience and color-coded icons that will link directly to NAM’s training calendar, allowing members to easily find training resources that relate to needs identified through the G&P.

Best Practice Partnership The Best Practices Partnership program is a commitment to Guidelines and Principles for Nonprofit Excellence and Legal Compliance. It recognizes NAM members effort on the path to nonprofit excellence. It is a self-monitored program that is affirmed by your organization’s board of directors. The benefits of becoming a Best Practice Partner is that it promotes continual dialogue among board and staff; it sets your organization apart from others; and the public and other NAM members know it! The Best Practice Partnership is not an organizational audit, but a continuing commitment to excellence.

The inaugural Nonprofit Conference in Kearney focused on local speakers and breakout sessions. The Nonprofit Summit of the Midlands featured keynote speaker Akaya Windwood, a nationally recognized nonprofit thought leader, as well as local experts in the breakouts. The popularity of both events demonstrated a growing demand for nonprofit professional development across Nebraska.

Salary & Benefit Trends Survey The Annual Salary and Benefit Report tracks pay trends and benefit practices. The NAM HR affinity group works with staff each year to ensure the most relevant data is collected for nonprofit leaders. This includes items such as changes in common benefit offerings and HR practices and compensation rates. The survey is open in the spring and any nonprofit organization may participate. Participation improves the quality of the data and allows nonprofits access to the information needed to ensure employees are appropriately compensated and the benefits offered will help to attract and retain employees.

Public Policy NAM continues to make strides in public policy work. In 2018, NAM focused on state budget issues and dug deep into what federal tax reform means for nonprofits. NAM continues to be a strong supporter of the Johnson Amendment to protect nonprofit nonpartisanship. NAM reviews legislation that impacts the nonprofit sector as a whole at the state and federal levels. If you would like more information or to see NAM’s board approved public policy agenda, click here.
