Discover Namaste Namaste is dedicated to sourcing beautiful fairly traded products from the far corners of the world. We embrace authentic Artisan work and the traditional methods used to create unique goods. The preservation of these skilled cultural arts and crafts, is highly valued by communities as a key part of their identity and heritage.

Mutually Beneficial Long-Term Trade We look to buy from small scale producers who use largely natural materials and traditional techniques to produce interesting, original articles. We believe the best way to help disadvantaged producers is to work with them in partnership through building mutually beneficial and long-term trade. We have helped over 100 producers to grow and develop with us since we started trading over 20 years ago.

Mass production and the forces of globalisation threaten artisan producers and their communities, who often struggle to adapt to the competition. UNESCO recognises the importance of the preservation of traditional skills and knowledge and the benefits that are conferred when these skills are passed on, particularly within the same community. By purchasing items that celebrate traditional craftsmanship, Namaste is contributing to the preservation of traditional skills and indigenous cultural heritage and we hope and believe that we are contributing positively to this effort.

Vintage & Antique Furniture & Accessories Recently launched by Namaste, a vintage inspired collection featuring some highly desirable unique pieces of furniture and accessories. Many are one-off pieces or have limited availability. Sideboards and cabinets, storage trunks and chests, bookshelves and tables, all items of distinction, intended to be loved.

It’s a natural by-product ready for upcycling and transformation into useful new things. Crops are replenished with newly planted trees, primarily for fruit production and the cycle continues where nothing goes to waste. Jodhpur, Rajasthan & Reclaimed Wood Our suppliers are based in Jodhpur, a city in the Thar Desert, which has become internationally renowned as the Indian centre for high quality furniture making. Traditional skills are sought from the finest artisans, living in nearby villages. Their expertise is key in creating unique upcycled items, widely recognised as the best from India. Reclaimed teak is a versatile organic resource, providing opportunities for beautiful bespoke pieces. Teak is a durable wood that used to be plentiful in India but is now under threat from over use. However, there remains a high volume of used teak, prime for upcycling. This is how Namaste brings you solid hardwood teak,

Having been well received and fitting in with our passion for recycling resources, we plan to expand the selection in future. Inevitably, the nature of these products results in them being highly sought after. Keep an eye on our website for latest availabillity and new additions www.namaste-uk.com or visit our warehouse in Skipton.

re-crafted into new functional items full of depth and character. Given teak’s natural qualities of strength and parasite resistance, its ideal to upcycle into robust cabinet units, cupboards, bookshelves and blanket boxes. This process is a fantastic way to reduce our eco footprint and re-employ natural materials that have already been harvested. The

October 2018. We were inspired to launch our Vintage Collection as a result. The crafted combination of genuine antique furniture and authentic upcycled pieces made from discarded resources, make for an eclectic mix, many of which are exclusive individual pieces to Namaste. Upcycling is an efficient practice and follows the eco principle of reuse. In fact, it is often referred to as “creative reuse.” There are some fine examples of imaginative reuses in this collection. Decorative tables upcycled from the base of a table originally used for grinding grain in Gurarat, India, serve as new, unique and distinctive items. A mirror is beautifully framed with a feature window shutter upcycled from an Indian home. An old unused milk churn is topped with sustainable mango wood and transformed into a novel stool. All these applications will benefit the environment; preventing more landfill and utilising materials already in existence, instead of manufacturing from fresh resources. Also on our India visit, we were privileged to see the production of authentic pieces crafted from sustainable mango wood. This rapid growing sturdy wood is only ever taken from trees at the end of their fruit producing life or cropped from overgrown branches.

GoodWeave Certified Rugs at Namaste

Namaste has been selling fairly traded rugs from India for many years. We are proud of the progress our suppliers have made with our support. We have taken the extra step of GoodWeave certification for all our Indian rug suppliers to provide the added reassurance of a totally independent monitoring body. GoodWeave is an award-winning pioneering charity and we are pleased to work with them. GoodWeave aims to stop child labour in the carpet industry and to replicate its market-based approach in other sectors. The GoodWeave label is the best assurance that no child labour was used in the making of your rug. In order to earn the GoodWeave label, rug exporters and importers must be licensed under the GoodWeave certification program and sign a legal binding contract to adhere to GoodWeave’s no-child-labour standard; allow unannounced random inspections by local inspectors and pay a licensing fee that helps support GoodWeave’s monitoring, inspections and education programs. Each certified rug features a numbered label on the reverse that can be traced back to the producer, linking you directly to the lives at the other end of the supply chain. Buying a GoodWeave certified rug from Namaste supports educational opportunities for children in India who might otherwise be required to work. Meet some of the children and artisans whose lives are improved by your purchase by visiting www.goodweave.org

GoodWeave Textiles & Additional Materials The GoodWeave Standard prohibits child labour, forced labour and bonded labour, and requires full disclosure and transparency of the producer’s supply chain. This scheme was introduced specifically for rug production and Namaste is proud to source rugs displaying GoodWeave certification labels. GoodWeave has recently expanded the program to include home textiles such as throws, pouffes and cushions and Namaste is part of the pilot scheme helping GoodWeave to establish the initiative. This textile pilot scheme is still evolving and subject to development. Therefore, there is not yet the facility for GoodWeave to certify goods which contain additional materials such as wood. For example, the textile element of an armchair with wooden legs may be covered by the GoodWeave Standard but because the item contains wood, the armchair cannot be labelled as GoodWeave certified at this point in time. We are hoping that in time, GoodWeave will be able to include wood in their certification.

In October 2018, representatives from Namaste were welcomed by GoodWeave on a visit to one such community. The rural village in Jamwa Ramgarh is approximately 30Km from Jaipur city and involved an hour’s journey. Villagers use weaving as an additional source of income and many homes traditionally house looms on front veranda’s where they are easily accessible.

GoodWeave respect this is a way of life and have no intention of preventing the transfer of heritage artisan skills, rather they are seeking to enrich the children’s lives further through education and play. At the Motivation and Learning Centres,

GoodWeave works with schools, local authorities, Madrasas to overcome any limitation related to community access and education for these children.

GoodWeave community facilitators use innovative approaches to support children at different learning levels, including songs and dance to encourage positive behaviour. We met some inspiring teachers too, often volunteers, so passionate about their work they run extra activities outside school hours. Now we’re putting it to work in other sectors where children are being exploited—and making human rights an intrinsic part of the global marketplace.” ®

GoodWeave was born in an Indian jail cell in the early 1990s. After reuniting a trafficked child weaver with his mother, future Nobel Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi was outraged to see dozens more children with a labour broker. Imprisoned overnight for causing a disturbance, he awoke with a simple idea; follow the money. If companies and consumers refuse to buy products tainted by child labour, producers can’t make them. Kailash reached out to allies and GoodWeave International was officially established in 1997. It was the first organisation to use product labelling to remediate a human rights issue. Today, GoodWeave’s market driven model includes company engagement, supply chain inspections, product certification, consumer awareness, victim rescue and remediation and preventative efforts such as educational programmes in at-risk communities. GoodWeave reaches layers of the supply chain that were previously invisible – making child labour a thing of the past.

What is GoodWeave? By GoodWeave “For more than two decades, GoodWeave has refined a unique, market-based model to fight the use of child labour. The joined market forces fuel our work in cleaning up supply chains, rescuing and educating child labourers, and improving work for adults. Our system is holistic, and it works.

How are GoodWeave certified rugs produced? GoodWeave certified rugs are produced by licensed exporters, who have agreed to produce rugs in accordance with the GoodWeave Standard, and allow unannounced inspections by GoodWeave. The GoodWeave Standard prohibits child labour, forced labour and bonded labour, and requires full disclosure and transparency of the producer’s supply chain. Producers also undergo a separate annual audit to document their performance against the Standard’s Progress Principles. The Progress Principles include broader workers’ rights such as freedom of association and collective bargaining, as well as no discrimination, decent working conditions, and minimizing negative environmental impacts in production. GoodWeave certification labels are only issued to licensed producers selling products to licensed importers. Producers must first be approved by GoodWeave’s Certification Committee in order to be licensed and use the label.

What are the key issues with child labour? Child labourers often forfeit the chance to ever begin school, giving them the highest illiteracy rates in the world. Victims are 5-14 years of age, and more than half of them, 85 million, are in hazardous work that spans mining, fishing, manufacturing, and agriculture. Some of these children have been kidnapped or sold, with the International Labour Organization (ILO) further estimating 5.5 million of them as bonded and slave laborers. Slavery, human trafficking, prostitution, and activities that directly harm the physical, mental, and moral wellbeing of a child are considered “Worst Forms of Child Labour.” While corporate social auditing improves working conditions at “first tier” factories, the worst exploitation takes place outside of the factory where many layers of subcontracting (tiers 2-4) turn child labour into an invisible crime. Complex and shifting informal labour systems leave a large proportion of child labour unmonitored and unaddressed in hidden workplaces. Ending child labour is everyone’s business. Sometimes the sweat of children is literally woven into the products

Order online www.namaste-uk.com or ring our order line 01756 700790

we buy every single day. Child labour taints global manufacturing supply chains across sectors–from carpets and garments to chocolate and tea. In the carpet industry where GoodWeave has worked for over 20 years, “carpet kids” sit at looms for up to 14 hours per day, using sharp tools to weave carpets with no access to education. Some are trafficked to loom sheds far from home – often under threat of violence – to work off a family debt that can never be repaid on meagre weaving wages.

What is GoodWeave’s relation to ISEAL? GoodWeave is a full member of the ISEAL Alliance, making its certification label among the world’s most credible and robust. GoodWeave meets the criteria recommended by ISEAL to use when evaluating any label claim: The claim must be clear and free from misleading details. It is based on substantiated evidence. Its system is transparent and information about the claim is freely available and accessible. There are significant controls as to how the label is issued and used. GoodWeave is committed to these criteria and to ISEAL’s Codes of Good Practice which are seen as a global reference for developing credible standards.

How does GoodWeave support children? GoodWeave is the only organisation that rescues and educates child labourers found during supply chain inspections. Rescuing children from a life of servitude represents a monumental step toward giving them a better life, but it is just the beginning. In order to stem the tide of child labour, it is important to ensure that children from vulnerable worker communities are given access to education. GoodWeave sponsors the education of rescued and at-risk children in carpet-weaving communities, totalling 3,800+ to date. GoodWeave also operates day-care centres, informal schooling, and community initiatives to encourage education and prevent child labour.

What has GoodWeave achieved? Since GoodWeave’s founding, more than 20,000 children have benefited from the organisation’s education and rehabilitation programs, including 3,800 directly rescued from the looms. GoodWeave works with 140+ global licensees, importing certified rugs into 16 consumer countries.

RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT We prioritise discussions with our suppliers about their environmental policies including production, packaging and sustainability. Our trade visits are made with these essential eco requirements at the forefront of our decision making. By examining these practices, we endeavour to support ethically made Fair Trade products without adverse effects on the planet.

Sustainability & Our Products

We seek continuous improvements to our own activities and aim to minimise our use of resources, identify and implement ways of reducing consumption, and re-use everything we can.

Hemp is habitually dense in its growth and requires little cultivation or pesticides. One of the oldest domesticated plants to India, its textile making fibres are extracted from the stems.

Our ethically made Fair Trade goods are sourced from eco-friendly, naturally sustainable and recycled materials wherever possible.

Mango Wood

Knowing the provenance of goods aids in making informed purchase decisions. That’s why we’re introducing new labels with eco information such as recycled content and material sustainability. We believe in keeping eco practices in our supply chain under continuous scrutiny and develop good relationships with our suppliers to work together on possible improvements. Of course, Fair Trade considers people, but we are always mindful of operating with the least possible environmental impact and being fair to the planet too.

Sustainable Materials: • require few natural resources for growth • have carefully managed populations • are resource efficient Hemp

A fast-growing plant, native to India, mango wood is the byproduct of fruit farming. Wood is either harvested from trees at the end of their fruit producing lifespan or coppiced from overgrown branches. Population is carefully maintained by new planting. Jute A hardy, fast-growing crop requiring no chemical intervention or irrigation. Matures in 4-6 months, with minimal environmental damage. In fact, it’s proven to have some very positive effects.

MEET THE MAKERS Lanterns and Recycled Iron India and its relationship with iron go back many centuries, when it was instrumental in the development of modern civilizations. Today, scrap iron is a valuable commodity for a host of reasons, making it one of the most recycled materials on earth. Although iron does break down over time, it will not biodegrade and offers no eco benefit when simply dumped. Recycling seems an obvious process to undertake given the metal can be repeatedly recycled in this way without changing its properties. A cycle of resource efficiency like this could see an iron lantern in one life time become a wind chime in another! Harvested from old vehicle parts, discarded machinery and structures, the scrap is fed into shredders to be broken up into smaller pieces. It is then ready to be melted down for the production of new iron and steel; steel being an alloy of iron and also a much needed material. The recycled iron used in our lanterns is just one imaginative re-use. Namaste showcases a range of recycled iron crafts in this supplement, all wonderfully decorative and very appealing for the eco conscious. Elaborately hand painted bells and fun animal themed wind chimes amongst recyclable ranges not to be missed. We enjoy a long established working relationship with our lanterns supplier. In fact, great friendships have been formed over time and extra assistance is always forthcoming when needed, from both parties. Â The factory provides reliable work for many in the local area and in doing so, encourages skills to be taught to new generations of artisans.

96

Pictured is the Manager of the factory, Vikas. Reasons to Recycle Iron • Preserves natural resources of raw material • Reduces energy consumption in production • Produces less harmful gases than new processing • Creates jobs through recycling process and re-production • Environmental and monetary incentives to recycle rather than send to landfill Enjoy these beautifully hand crafted lanterns in the knowledge they are sensitively sourced and bring benefits to people and planet.

MEET THE MAKERS Recycled Aluminium, India A popular eco range we’ve chosen to extend; we invite you to Meet the Makers of our stunning recycled aluminium tableware and ornaments. Our supplier in Northern India was established in 1992 by two enterprising brothers. They have succeeded in growing a family business employing in excess of 100 permanent workers, many of whom are skilled Artisans from the local community. Being a relatively largescale producer, workers benefit from a more organised, structured work environment and better facilities. Men and women are paid equally and wages are above the minimum state recommended rate, permitting above average living standards. No-one under the age of 18 is employed. Other benefits include sick pay, paid breaks and health and safety regulation standards that would be taken for granted in a western establishment. The business is committed to improving quality of life for the whole community through employment and supporting communal projects. Opportunities for education are limited so they make regular contributions to schools for the education of under privileged children. Such an endeavour has far reaching effects; positively influencing life chances for individuals, their families and bringing advantages to regional infrastructure. This is the kind of ambitious enterprise we’re glad to support by developing a good working relationship and supplying regular orders on a Fair Trade basis. Many people have worked for the business for a long time. See what it means for Nazism on page 103

MAKING NEW ALUMINIUM THE PROCESS In line with our respect for the environment, recycling aluminium saves up to 90% carbon emissions compared to the production of new from bauxite. The eco friendly practice of re-using waste materials which would have gone to landfill is about being efficient with resources already in circulation. Creating new aluminium goods by hand casting and hand painting is a highly skilled process involving several stages. • A mould is placed on a wooden block • A ring of metal is placed around it to contain the sand • Fine sand is loaded and firmly patted down • A flat metal lid is placed on top • The operator gently flips the lid and the metal ring is split in two; one convex and one concave impression • Chalk dust is sprinkled to stop the sand sticking • The recycled aluminium blocks are melted down to a liquid • The halves of the sand mould are put back together and the molten aluminium is poured in •. The mould is split to reveal the new re-formed cast which is then polished to a smooth finish • Colour is applied and allowed to dry • Clear enamel is applied • The food safe lacquer is given a final polish to a glossy finish The entire process takes place under one roof. Namaste has inspected the workshops and is pleased to report work areas are clean, well ventilated and equipped first aid stations are in place. See Amara Ornaments & Seashore Crafts pages 102-105

Meet the Makers‌ Living close to the factory in Moradabad, Northern India makes it an easy commute for Nazism, who has been recycling aluminium there for 12 years. Being the eldest of 7 children and unmarried, he supports the rest of his family. He tells us he’s pleased to do this. His brothers are students and Nazism would like to help them finish their education for the benefit of the whole family.

Empowering Women Through Fair Trade In general women face several obstacles in becoming contributory members of the workforce in emerging countries. Cultural norms regarding Maternal responsibilities, limited education opportunities and effects of industrialisation are all factors. However, given that many of our products are heritage hand crafted, they provide the perfect work for women. We actively support businesses providing practical solutions for women, such as home working, flexibility and learning development. The organisations we’re connected to are also making great strides in encouraging inclusiveness and empowerment. For example, GoodWeave run adult literacy classes open to everyone. Referring to the participants, Vinti Singal, Supply Chain Manager for GoodWeave India, says, “I can’t calculate the financial value for women attending the classes, or what has been learnt, apart from that they feel empowered. Sometimes we talk about return on investment too much and you can’t calculate the benefit on this person’s life.” Sometimes, women implement change themselves. One of our suppliers was set up by a woman for women to help lift them out of poverty. Providing skills and education to women and single mothers often ostracized by their communities, her mission statement is “To empower women by providing fair wages and creating beautiful, handmade, high quality and unique accessories.”

Introduction to Chakras and Wellbeing With several of our ranges depicting the chakra symbols and colours, here’s our basic outline of their characteristics. Each one of the seven chakra symbols represent the energy centres of the human body and are further defined by corresponding chakra colours. In order to aid good health and wellbeing, it’s essential to maintain free flowing energy through all seven chakras. By understanding the relation of chakras to energy points in the human body any areas of concern can be effectively targeted for healing.

About Namaste We are a small company with a strong ethical policy based upon the belief that the best way to reduce poverty in the developing world is through trade. We continually strive to improve our own goals, aspirations and achievements as we develop in tandem with our producer partners. Namaste is proud to be a BAFTS Member, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers as a Fair Trade Importer. BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK is a network of independent shops and suppliers dedicated to promoting Fair Trade retail in the UK. BAFTS provides a structure of accountability to its members who adhere to the 10 Principles of Fair Trade as set out by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).

Fair Trade Organisations Some of our suppliers are members of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) and some are members of their appropriate National Fair Trade Organisation. Our largest suppliers in India, Vietnam and Nepal are recognised by the WFTO or their national counterparts as Fair Trade producers. We encourage and if appropriate, help our suppliers to seek formal Fair Trade recognition. In Thailand and Indonesia, we deal with many very small-scale artisan producers who do not wish to or do not have the ability to become recognised Fair Trade producers. We strongly believe that these are the sort of very small-scale producers who really do need our help. It is what Fair Trade should be about and we are proud to help with or without then having formal Fair Trade recognition.

134

HOME & GIFTS

Why do we think it is Fair Trade? The WFTO has 10 principles that Fair Trade organisations must follow. We follow these principles and regularly review our procedures and achievements according to these principles:-

1.

Namaste seeks to work with disadvantaged and marginalized producers and to develop business with them to help them become financially stronger and more independent. We try to buy craft products that reflect the culture and tradition and that utilise the skills of the supplier. We also buy from some larger producers if we are happy that they are also adhering to the principles of Fair Trade. Many larger suppliers are able to provide better job security, facilities and benefits for their workers and many are able to support community or charitable projects.

2. We are accountable to BAFTS and provide transparent information about our producers and trading practices to BAFTS as part of our ongoing membership renewal. We make Fair Trade Point of Sale information available for our customers. 3. We always follow Fair Trading practices. This involves paying an advance when asked for or required to allow the producer to buy raw materials and start making the order without getting into financial difficulty. We never ask for or take credit terms from any of our suppliers. When the goods are shipped, they have been paid for in full. We never make exceptions to these rules and never have. If suppliers need money early for particular reasons we will always try and help them. 4. We discuss pricing with our suppliers in an open and honest way. We seek to pay a price that fairly reflects the value of the product, that allows it to sell successfully and that allows the workers to earn fair wages. We do our best to ensure that wages paid are at or above local expectations and in accordance with national laws.

5. We do our utmost to ensure that no children or forced labour is involved in the production of Namaste products. We ensure that no children under the age of 16 are involved in factory based production for Namaste. Many items are produced by home workers, which provides useful additional income whilst allowing them to look after their homes and families. 6. Namaste suppliers commit to non-discrimination, gender equality and freedom of association. 7. Wherever possible we visit suppliers ourselves to make sure that producers have good working conditions. We also have agents who make visits and act on our behalf. All suppliers must first complete a long and detailed questionnaire relating to their Fair Trade policies. 8. We look for long term relationships with our suppliers and provide them with designs and ideas to benefit their business and keep the orders flowing. By providing repeat orders, advance payments and by making a commitment never to cancel or unduly delay orders helps our suppliers to grow and develop capacity. 9. Namaste promotes Fair Trade through our activities and literature. 10. We are using more and more recycled or environmentally friendly materials in our products which now make up a very large percentage of our product range. Our suppliers are encouraged to respect their environment and to have written and audited environmental policies.

The cost of keeping a child fed for a year at school is just £28 a year and the picture shows children enjoying their food. With the help of our customers, together we have raised enough to pay for 2 years of midday meals for the school. Approximately 95 children are now able to attend school regularly, a rise of 41% and their Headteacher, Ramilla, reports they are more alert, engaged and happier.
