20 Years of Namaste! We are celebrating our 20th year in business. The Namaste journey continues as we bring you our latest inspirational collections, fairly traded from the far corners of the world including a NEW Artisan collection. These are exquisite items that celebrate the very best of traditional handmade skills.

‘Namaste’ which can be simply translated as ‘Welcome’ in the country of Nepal, was the result of an inspirational year long trip to Nepal and India. Starting off in Nepal with a fantastic trek to Mount Everest base camp, followed by 6 months circumnavigating the Indian Subcontinent on motorbikes. The bikes were re-conditioned ex Indian Army single cylinder Enfield Bullets and the 1950s technology was quite a challenge, particularly with no biking experience and no license! Sleeping under the stars at the side of the road, the idea for the business slowly developed through meeting people making crafts for a living. Starting a business meant earning a living while putting something back into such a wonderful part of the world. We still remember our first catalogue, shot by ourselves on the farm where we had our first barn warehouse, complete with chickens and wellies! Development from then on has been organic growth over the years - a lot of hard work and a lot of fun along the way! Many of our customers have been with us since the early days and we hope they have enjoyed the journey with us. We have a great team and we look forward to developing the business. All products share the handmade artisan element and we are proud to support our producers, to help them and see them develop over time along with us. Fair Trade must be competitively priced and commercially successful. Just because the product is fair trade does not mean it is expensive. We aim to buy direct from the makers which makes our prices very competitive. We try very hard to maintain excellent stock levels and an efficient, friendly customer service. We only invoice and charge customers for the goods we have in stock. The more you can buy from us the better we can support you with higher discounts and the more we can support our Fair Trade producers.

You can give us a call first to let us know you are planning a visit or just call in. We offer a 5% discount for taking the goods with you. We export our goods to other countries and welcome all enquiries. We already export to many countries around the world and would welcome the chance to build on this success in partnership with our customers. Any export order gets an automatic discount of at least 10%.

The raw bamboo is cut down into very thin strips, softened and then moulded into the shape required. It is then dried in natural sunlight, sanded, polished and lacquered many times to achieve a beautiful iridescent finish. Our supplier specialises in sustainable handicraft production.

Namaste specializes in the supply of design led, fairly traded and hand crafted items at the most competitive prices available. Our customers are valued greatly and promised a highly efficient yet personal and friendly service. PAYING FOR YOUR ORDER Credit/Debit Card - We welcome payment by Visa, Mastercard, Switch, Maestro and Visa Electron for no extra charge. This enables customers to take advantage of the free credit period offered by credit card companies. We do not actually take payment until the day that we despatch the goods. For payment by card, we require the card number,CVC, expiry date, valid from date, card type, cardholder’s name (as it appears on the card), statement address and a contact number. For switch cards, we also require the issue number. Bacs Payment - Goods can be despatched upon confirmation of receipt. This usually takes 1-2 days. Please call for details. Please ensure that the name we know you by is included in the bank’s payment reference. Cheque - Goods will be dispatched once the cheque is confirmed as cleared by our bank. As this can take up to 7 working days, if you require the goods quickly we recommend that you use one of the alternative methods above, or send us the cheque in good time. 30 Day Credit Account - UK based customers who have already made a payment at the time of dispatch and who wish to set up a 30 day credit facility with Namaste need to contact us and we will send you a credit application form. Customers who do have an account set up are welcome to pay at the time of dispatch at any time for any individual order. Payments against the balance of a credit account can be made by any of the methods listed above. For account

customers, failure to settle within 30 days may result in following orders reverting to payment at the time of dispatch. All fees incurred by Namaste in relation to the recovery of overdue accounts will be passed on to the customer. Namaste reserves the right to charge interest on overdue accounts at a rate of 3% per month, and any non-payment will be pursued in full. All prices are shown as exclusive of VAT and are subject to change without notice if necessary due to forces beyond our control. Invoices will be processed at prices current at time of order. All prices are in Pounds Sterling. Our minimum order is only £150. You are very welcome to pay in EUROS, please contact us for our Euro bank details. First orders are always on a payment at the time of dispatch basis. After the first order, customers can choose to either pay for the goods at the time of dispatch or set up a 30 day credit account (UK customers only). Payments can be made in advance by transfer to either our Sterling or Euro bank accounts (please contact us for details), or at the time of dispatch by an internationally accepted credit/debit card Title Claim The goods remain the property of Namaste until such time as they are paid for in full. The risk in the goods shall pass to the buyer on delivery but the ownership of the goods shall remain with Namaste until full payment has been received from the Buyer. In the event of non-payment Namaste shall be entitled to repossess the goods directly from the premises of the buyer if necessary. In the event of the goods having been subject to prior re-sale, Namaste shall be entitled to the proceeds of the re-sale in the hands of the buyer, liquidator, receiver or trustee in the bankruptcy of the Buyer. DELIVERY UK Mainland – Delivery is FREE for orders over £250 excluding VAT. Delivery for smaller orders is charged at a rate of £7.00 per box (+ VAT). Almost all orders under £250 can fit into one box. Next Day delivery- all postcodes in England & Wales. There are limitations to the service coverage areas for next day services and it is not always guaranteed. Other UK Mainland postcodes- delivery is 2-3 working days. Namaste cannot be held responsible for any goods damaged by direct sunlight or for any goods washed incorrectly. Do not lay deep coloured items over light coloured surfaces due to the possibility of irreversible colour transfer. Namaste cannot be held responsible for any such damage incurred. Namaste has been supporting Child Recue Nepal for more than 10 years. We sponsor two children who have been rescued and are looked after in a care home in Nepal run by the charity. We regularly donate and raise money for the trust. This year, we are working with the trust on their School Reconstruction Programme. We have been allocated a primary school in Nepal devastated by the earthquake which is desperately needing investment. So far, with the help of our customers, we have already raised enough funds to get Bhumeswari Primary School a much needed water supply and toilet. This will make a huge difference to the school as they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a water supply before. The majority of children walk over an hour to school and not having running water or toilets means that many donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bother to attend.

We have just launched our latest Clothing and Accessory Ranges which are handmade in Nepal. Each time we pay our suppliers in Nepal we will pay a percentage of the invoice value to Child Rescue Nepal.

Child Rescue Nepal frees children from slavery. In Nepal we estimate that there are almost 100,000 children working in hazardous situations.These children are extremely vulnerable and suffer frequent physical, emotional and often sexual abuse. In order to combat this we focus on rescuing children from slavery as well working hard to prevent the children of Nepal entering slavery in the first place.We work with local police to raid factories, restaurants and hotels where children are being held captive.We take children to our safe house where they receive medical attention and counselling.We provide food, clothing, education and a safe home until we can safely reunite them with their families. We believe that investing in ways to keep

children in education is a crucial way of preventing children entering the slave trade. By providing bursaries, midday meals, taps and classrooms we ensure that schools are safe spaces where children want to be. We have rescued nearly 700 children and ensured that thousands more children have been kept in education. However our work is far from over.We want to end child slavery in Nepal and we won’t stop until every child is free.

Summary We are a small company with a strong ethical policy that is based upon the belief that the best way to reduce poverty in the developing world is through trade. We are not perfect but we are honest and our aim is to improve our own goals, aspirations and achievements as we develop in tandem with our producer partners. Namaste is recognised by BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers as a Fair Trade importer.

Mutually beneficial long term trade We look to buy from small scale producers who use largely natural materials and traditional techniques to produce interesting and inherently beautiful articles. We believe that the best way to help disadvantaged producers is to work with them in partnership through mutually beneficial and long term trade. We have helped over 100 producers to grow and develop with us since we started trading 20 years ago.

Fair Trade Organisations Some of our suppliers are members of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and some are members of their appropriate National Fair Trade Organization. Our largest suppliers in India, Vietnam, Nepal and Kenya are recognized by the WFTO or their national counterparts as Fair Trade producers. We encourage and if appropriate; help our suppliers to seek formal fair trade recognition. In Thailand and Indonesia we deal with many very small scale artisan producers who do not wish to or do not have the ability to become recognized Fair Trade producers. We believe very strongly that these are the sort of very small scale producers who really do need our help. It is what Fair Trade should be about and we are proud to help with or without them having formal fair trade recognition.

The WFTO has 10 principles that Fair Trade organisations must follow. We follow these principles and regularly review our procedures and achievements according to these principles:1.

Namaste seeks to work with disadvantaged and marginalized producers and to develop business with them to help them become financially stronger and more independent. We try to buy craft products that reflect the culture and tradition and that utilize the skills of the supplier. We also buy from some larger producers if we are happy that they are also adhering to the principles of Fair Trade. Many larger suppliers are able to provide better job security, facilities and benefits for their workers and many are able to support community or charitable projects.

2. We are accountable to BAFTS and provide transparent information about our producers and trading practices to BAFTS as part of our ongoing membership renewal. We make Fair Trade Point of Sale information available for our customers. 3. We always follow Fair Trading practices. This involves paying an advance when asked for or required to allow the producer to buy raw materials and start making the order without getting into financial difficulty. We never ask for or take credit terms from any of our suppliers. When the goods are shipped, they have been paid for in full. We never make exceptions to these rules and never have. If suppliers need money early for particular reasons we will always try and help them. 4. We discuss pricing with our suppliers in an open and honest way. We seek to pay a price that fairly reflects the value of the product, that allows it to sell successfully and that allows the workers to earn fair wages. We do our best to ensure that wages paid are at or above local expectations and in accordance with national laws.

5. We do our utmost to ensure that no children or forced labour is involved in the production of Namaste products. We ensure that no children under the age of 16 are involved in factory based production for Namaste. Many items are produced by home workers, which provides useful additional income whilst allowing them to look after their homes and families. 6. Namaste suppliers commit to non-discrimination, gender equality and freedom of association. 7. Wherever possible we visit suppliers ourselves to make sure that producers have good working conditions. We also have agents who make visits and act on our behalf. All suppliers must first complete a long and detailed questionnaire relating to their Fair Trade policies. 8. We look for long term relationships with our suppliers and provide them with designs and ideas to benefit their business and keep the orders flowing. By providing repeat orders, advance payments and by making a commitment never to cancel or unduly delay orders helps our suppliers to grow and develop capacity. 9. Namaste promotes Fair Trade through our activities and literature. 10. We are using more and more recycled or environmentally friendly materials in our products which now make up a very large percentage of our product range. Our suppliers are encouraged to respect their environment and to have written and audited environmental policies.

India We buy from many different suppliers in India that reflect the incredible diversity and complexity of this fascinating country. Our largest supplier in India suggested the idea of Namaste to its founders in the first place and then has grown with us for 20 years. They are now a member of the Fair Trade Forum India, the national body of the WFTO. They export to us most of our handmade paper and non-kilim textile goods which are made by various artisan groups who specialise in different products in Rajasthan. We have various other suppliers in Jaipur and the surrounding area and they all work along similar lines. Kilim rugs come from two main regions and production is clustered in weaving communities around Varanasi and Jaipur. We are in the process of getting our rugs labelled with “GoodWeave” labels, a charity which works to end child labour in rug making communities while educating and helping producers to implement better policies. They are also involved in developmental work. Jodhpur is an incredible fortress city out in the deserts of Rajasthan. It is the main home of the Indian furniture industry and the home of our furniture maker. It is also where we get most of our hand painted items, wooden and metal artefacts.

Moradabad is the great centre of Indian metalwork and Saharanpur is rightly famous for its tradition of highly skilled woodcarving. We buy from various family businesses in both areas. In addition to these main centres, we buy leather gifts from Kolkata, incense from the famous fragrance makers of Mysore, and soapstone from Agra. Closer to Delhi we buy from several modern craft, textile, gift and jewellery producers with state of the art facilities. Our handmade ceramics come from a famous production area in Uttar Pradesh. We are pleased to be able to support various family and cooperative owned businesses in Kashmir, an area that desperately needs our help due to its troubled history. India is a wondrous and captivating place, beguiling and frustrating at times and certainly challenging! It is where we started the business and the fact that the man who suggested the very idea of Namaste is still our largest supplier and has recently become Fair Trade registered says a lot about our values and long term ethos. “Mother India” gives us great products, great times and a lot of laughs along the way.

Our clothing suppliers are based in the Jaipur region and take inspiration from the traditional patterns and designs that make Indian fabrics famous worldwide.

Nepal If we had to declare a favourite place to visit for buying then our friends in Kathmandu would probably be the clear winners. As part of our continued efforts to help them after the devastating earthquake we visited at the end of last year, with a view to increasing the amount we can buy from Nepal. This resulted in new suppliers and an expanded range of products for our customers. Our largest supplier, whom we helped set up in business at the end of the last century makes clothing and felt products, and is a member of the Fair Trade Group Nepal. We have a hand made paper supplier who is also a member. After a break for a few years we once again have beautiful handknitted jackets, hats and gloves, the detail and skill used in the making of these items is inrcedible. We now donate a percentage of all Nepalese goods we buy directly to Child Rescue Nepal that we continue to support and raise money for. For more details please Pages 116-117.

Indonesia We have been buying Fair Trade products from Indonesia for the past 12 years or so. In the past we have always bought from very small family based producers and we still work with many of our original suppliers. We always pay an advance to allow the purchase of raw materials and then pay our supplier in full on delivery of the goods to our freight agent. Because we buy direct from the makers with no middlemen or marketing houses involved, we rarely have to discuss pricing. If we do then we discuss it as a partnership to make sure we get the goods for a price that will ensure they sell quickly. This is Fair Trade at its most basic and most effective. These suppliers are woodcarvers, metalworkers and craft artisans. They don’t have marketing offices, most don’t even have offices! They are not members of the WFTO or

any other Fair Trade body but they are honourable and lovely people to work with and they need our business to provide them with an income. Because we deal direct with the makers, this is business at its most transparent and accountable.

Vietnam Our largest supplier in Vietnam are a not for profit member of the WFTO and their mission is to help marginalised and disadvantaged ethnic groups and villages to make products that will support their communities and allow their much loved traditional way of life to survive and flourish. We also buy from four other private businesses that have a deep commitment to ethical policies and environmental protection. One of them is also a member of the WFTO. Namaste is proud to help to support traditional crafts in village communities. In the words of one of these suppliers “Our traditional villages can only survive and develop sustainably if they are able to sell their traditional craft products and earn money for their families. If they can’t then they will have to move to the city and find work.” All of our Vietnamese suppliers aim to create sustainable development for poorer rural communities by helping village weavers to achieve a consistent income while protecting and nurturing the local environment and specialising in recycled and environmentally friendly products.

Thailand We have various suppliers in the north of Thailand that vary from tiny scale artisan producers to large scale and well organized factories. We have visited them all several times and are happy that while there is a huge difference between them in terms of scale, they share the same objectives of making sustainable products in a way that protects both the environment and benefits their employees by providing long term and reliable well paid employment with excellent working conditions. Our small scale suppliers are a good model of fair trade in action and again, they simply do not have the wherewithal, desire nor need to become fair trade recognized. They make things that we want to buy by using traditional handicraft skills. We deal with them direct with no middlemen involved and we make sure they get a fair price, prompt payments and regular orders.

Guatemala We began buying from Guatemala just over a year ago, our supplier makes the very popular Worry Dolls and Guatemalan Handicrafts for us. The Worry Dolls help to tell the stories of the Mayan people and Guatemalan culture. They export these Worry Dolls around the world. The company began its journey in 1991 and is committed to improving the lives and communities of Lake Atitlan, San Antonio Palopo, they currently employ 15 full time workers as well as a team of homeworkers and artisans.

In order to earn the GoodWeave label, rug exporters and importers must be licensed under the GoodWeave certification program and sign a legally binding contract to adhere to GoodWeaveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no-child-labour standard; allow unannounced random inspections by local inspectors; and pay a licensing fee that helps support GoodWeaveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s monitoring, inspections and education programs. Each certified rug features a numbered label on the reverse that can be traced back to the producer, linking you directly to the lives at the other end of the supply chain.
