Fundraiser fills cupboards BY BRENDA GOUGH BLACK PRESS

An idea to raise money for the Nanoose Bay Community Cupboard was so successful it will become an annual event. Dave Kasprick, owner of the Red Cod Forge, held a Christmas studio open house Dec. 17 and was overwhelmed by the generosity of the community. The event generated $434 for the Nanoose food bank and Kasprick said he had so much fun holding the fundraiser, he’s going to do it again next year. The artist donated the proceeds from the sale of his original forged star fish as well as other one-of-a-kind metal pieces which completely sold out, to the Nanoose Bay Community Cupboard. People also dropped

off food donations. “All the donations helped out. It was a huge success. We had lots of people come by from all over,� he said. Virginia Brucker was also pleased with the generosity of the community. Brucker and her h u s b a n d , C h a rl i e, started the Nanoose

Transplant recipients made an important delivery this holiday season as part of B.C. Transplant’s annual Operation Popcorn. On Dec. 16, a team of transplant recipients from Nanaimo, including a liver recipient, lung recipient and mother of kidney recipient, gathered at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to deliver tins of popcorn and show their gratitude to the many doctors, nurses, and lab specialists involved in the organ donation process – staff who don’t normally see the results of their work. Without the support of NRGH, organ donation and transplantation would not be possible. So far this year, staff in intensive care units, emergency departments, and operating rooms across the province have helped save 268 lives. The idea for Operation Popcorn began more than 20 years ago as a way to acknowledge the difficult but crucial role British Columbian hospital staff play with potential deceased organ donors, their families, and the organ recovery process. During Operation Popcorn, transplant recipients across B.C. deliver decorative tins of popcorn to donor hospitals to personally thank the staff in the critical care units for their hard work and dedication and to show them living proof that organ donation saves lives.
