Superette claims Silly Boat crown Annual regatta draws 40 teams to harbour to compete, raise money for Nanaimo CDC BY JAN BEECHER THE NEWS BULLETIN
A
fter a high-energy day of creativity, innovation and silliness, Superette Foods took the final heat in the Nanaimo Child Development Centre’s Silly Boat Regatta in just two minutes, two seconds. Sunday’s 27th annual regatta had 40 teams race in eight heats followed by the grand finale. Paddles, pedals and fins propelled the floating contraptions from Swy-a-lana Lagoon, around the buoy in Nanaimo Harbour and back to the beach to ring the bell. The event raised more than $100,000 for CDC, attracted more than 10,000 people and kept everyone laughing. The four-man Superette Foods team won the second heat in its Styrofoam-walled, tub-like boat, and then went on to win the grand finale against win-

ners of the other seven heats – Casino Nanaimo, Royal Bank, Kyto Salon, Best Buy, Nanaimo Child Development Centre, Vancouver Island Exhibition and Vancouver Island Dyslexia Association. Superette’s team has competed for five years and raised $957 this year. “Superette’s just all about community,” said Katie Dionne. Even though Superette won the grand finale, it wasn’t the fastest team. The First to Finish award went to the Nanaimo CDC team, propelled by the flippers of Michelle Lantaigne, an occupational therapist at the centre. Their time was 1:28 in their heat. Casino Nanaimo Card Sharks won the Super Silliest Boat award. Their boat was designed by Brienne Gogo and Scott Hand using rainwater barrels, duct tape and Styrofoam. The result was canoe-like, but the details, including dice on the paddles and shark-fin hats, clearly gave an edge in the silly department. The Card Sharks raised $2,200. Although Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty Pirates received the dubious First to Sink award, that’s only because their vessel didn’t sink until they started racing. As announced by a yelp from one of their paddlers, Island Timberland Products was truly the first to go under – their boat began to capsize almost as soon as it hit the water. But the team refused to give up, tying the boat together as they waited for the race to start. Two Shiver-me-timbers team members, along with pieces of their vessel, eventually completed the course. Boat building began at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Silly boat builders had four hours to create their regatta entry, which had to comply with the rules: boats must be assembled on site and boats can be made of any recycled materials. With that in mind, it’s amazing what people turned into a boat. The main ingredients were duct tape, 20-litre water bottles and Styrofoam, but plenty of wood, bicycles and papier mâché were on hand as well. Every team seemed to have a different game plan. For Long Lake Chiropractic, looks were everything. Its boat was designed with a giraffe as a figurehead. “They have seven cervical vertebrae, just like us,” explained Shawn Thomas, skipper of the long-necked boat. The six-paddler team wore sailor caps, giraffe-print neck pillows and paper giraffe masks. At the base of the
giraffe’s neck was a sign that said, “You think your neck hurts.” The team raised $3,021. Unfortunately, giraffes aren’t known for their agility in water. Coast Capital Savings was the corporate sponsor for the Silly Boat Regatta, but that wasn’t enough. The Coast Capsizers team had high competitive hopes this year. “Our goal is to get into the [final] heat. Apparently our boat will sail to Hawaii and back,” said Lisa Deleeuw, team spokeswoman. “We changed our design at the last minute.” The new design was developed by Coast Capital financial planner Mike Cutler and his dad, Ross. The HMS Arbie team, manned by members of the Royal Bank, hoped to defend its status as “Best Team Spirit,” an honour held in both 2010 and 2008. The team raised close to $1,400. They lost the team spirit
award to a bunch of Care Bears from the Vancouver Island University Child and Youth Care Program. “We put together a little Care Bear chant,” said Kristie Irvine, her face painted complete with a blue heart on her nose. Apparently, the judges loved it. A regular bar-room brawl broke out in the seventh heat. With the Howard Johnson, The Cambie, Earl’s and The Foundry Pub all in the same race, it was no surprise. The team from the Foundry, armed with yellow water balloons, started bombing the competition. The crew from the Howard Johnson were prepared for the attack – and were quick to respond. Their paddles happened to be snow shovels, which were effective for catapulting gallons of water on the Foundry team. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Grass fire doused Nanaimo Fire Rescue rushed to extinguish a small grass fire along the E&N Trail near Wellington Road and the Island Highway at 7 p.m. Sunday. Rick Kwasnecha, fire investigator, said passing motorists reported the fire, which was believed to be set intentionally. “It was not an accidental fire,” said Kwasnecha, adding the incident was passed to the Mounties for investigation. He added after Saturday’s heavy rainfall, it was unlikely a carelessly discarded cigarette butt or other unintentional act could have sparked the fire. There were no injuries and damage was limited to a small area of grass.

DISPUTE OVER engagement ring led to incident.
One man was hospitalized and two suspects face charges following a home invasion in Nanaimo. The incident happened late Saturday afternoon at a home on 100 block of Giggleswick Place, where an engagement party was held Friday. “The girl who attended the engagement party makes an allegation that
she lost her ring at that party or that somebody had taken her very expensive ring,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. O’Brien said the woman who lost the ring lured a woman who lives at the Giggleswick residence out of the house by inviting her to go shopping, leaving her boyfriend alone. Two men with a pitbull then entered the house, beat up the boyfriend with a blunt metallic weapon, kicked him, threw him down a flight of stairs
and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim, 30, was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with injuries including a collapsed lung, broken ribs and black eyes, O’Brien said. Both suspects turned themselves in to police Sunday. Lloyd Joseph Thomas, 29, and James Stuart Else, 25, appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Monday where they were each charged with aggravated assault, robbery and uttering threats.

Wet weather keeps fire season quiet Thanks to the rain, it has been a quiet season so far at the Coastal Fire Centre. A thunder and lightning storm early Wednesday failed to ignite any new fires, said fire information officer Marg Drysdale, due to the deluge that followed.
The net effect was the same – no new forest fires. That said, the Coastal Fire Centre will not lift its summer outdoor burning and campfire restrictions. Since the fire activity is low in this region, the centre sent 30 firefighters and others to Ontario.

Nanaimo pubs are putting Crime Stoppers posters in front of a captive audience – in their washrooms. T he laminated posters, designed by second-year graphic art students at Vancouver Island University and printed by Eye Mean Graphics, were hung in the Queen’s biffies Thursday. The Queen’s is the first downtown nightclub to feature the posters. Owner Jerry Hong will put them up in his other establishments and hopes other pubs will follow suit. “Being a part of Crime Stoppers and helping reduce crime, in downtown and anywhere else, has always been a challenge and a goal of ours to make downtown a better place for everybody to come,” Hong said. The posters are another link in a chain of programs helping improve Nanaimo’s downtown core, where crime and violence declined drastically in recent years. “The target audience we’re looking at is age 19 to 35,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “These are the people who are out in the community seeing and hearing things and these posters are good reminders they can always call Crime Stoppers and report crime.” The poster designs are the winners of a Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers contest offering cash prizes. Each poster bears an image reflecting crime and boldly displays the Crime Stop-

In 1969, it was sold to Norcanair of Prince Albert, Sask., which was handling firefighting operations for the province. The Saskatchewan government bought it in 1980. Ray Williams of Nanaimo was hired by a group of Malaysian investors – the plane’s last owners – to find a PBY for tourism flights in Africa and he found both planes in St. Thomas, Ont. and flew them to Nanaimo

in the late 1990s. “The money fell out and the Malaysians would come out every once in awhile, but they didn’t want to spend any more money on it,” said Williams. The Canso has also gone
through a number of paint schemes in its life, from original white and silver and orange, to light blue and its current yellow. And it will change once more as the museum plans to paint the plane in
a Second World War U.S. Navy scheme. “We will be painting it up as one of the navy PBYs that spotted the Japanese fleet at the Battle of Midway,” said Bailey. “Aircraft 44P-4 was touted as the one that first made contact with the Japanese.” “It was also a PBY5-A and the airplane in Nanaimo is a 5-A. It fits, so we’re not playing loose with history painting it that way.” David Legg, a Catalina/ Canso enthusiast, writer and researcher in England, said organizations like Evergreen and the current owners of the former C-FNJF are entitled to paint their aircraft how they want given the huge amount of financial and human resource involved in restoring them and keeping them in good condition.
When it arrived in Europe, C-FNJF was painted, not as an RCAF Canso A, but as a UK-based USAAF OA-10A Catalina from 1945. “There is already one airworthy former RCAF Canso A flying in Canada with the Canadian Warplane Heritage in RCAF markings and another about to do so in France,” said Legg in an e-mai . “The point is that the very significant part played by the RCAF Cansos in World War Two and beyond has not been ignored by Catalina and Canso owners.” But Williams said he hates the idea of the PBY heading to the U.S. and won’t be at the Nanaimo Airport to watch it take off for Oregon. “That is an original PBY5-A that played a huge part in the West Coast’s

Nanoose fire hall plans require more discussion Tendering for the construction of the Nanoose Bay Fire Hall is complete, but all bids were higher than the budget estimate. The board approved borrowing up to $3.2 million for the work in conjunction with work on the Nanoose Bay water treatment plant. Now approaching the projects se parately, as a lower price was deter mined to be obtained this way, the lowest bidder still exceeded the budget estimate by more than $270,000, including a contingency estimate. Discussions to reduce the project scope in order to complete it have been held with the lowest bidder, as well as representatives from the

China passes U.S. as B.C. lumber buyer VALUE OF shipments to U.S. surpassed for first time ever.
I
BY TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS
Chinese buyers purchased $122 million worth of B.C. lumber in May, surpassing the value of lumber shipments to the United States for the first time ever. A record monthly volume of 746,000 cubic metres of lumber was shipped to China in May, according to figures released Sunday by the B.C. government. In the first five months of 2011, 2.8 million cubic metres of lumber have gone to China, more than double the same period last year based on value as well as volume. Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell credited the efforts of governments and industry to promote sales and wood construction over the past eight years. “In only five months, we’ve shipped the equivalent of over 76,000 containers of wood to China, the equivalent production of approximately 14 typical Interior sawmills over this period,” Bell said. Adding up sales to Japan, Korea and other Asian destinations, the first five months of the year totalled $776 million, nearly half of B.C.’s total exports. Sales to the U.S. totalled $661 million during the same period. The prolonged housing slump in the U.S. has taken its toll on U.S. sales. In the first five months of 2010, U.S. sales accounted for $815 million, or 58 per cent of B.C.’s total sales. Total production from B.C. sawmills has climbed this year due to demand from Asia, recovering from the U.S. market collapse that began in 2007. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

over Bay Secondary School student Cassandra Elphinstone will spend part of her summer on ice. She won’t be attending a summer hockey camp, though she is strong athletically. Elphinstone is one of just five Canadian female students and one of 65 international students hailing from 13 countries chosen for a life-changing Arctic adventure that will help foster a better understanding of the natural world and the pressures it faces. A member of Dover Bay’s eco and outdoor clubs, Elphinstone, at the urging of teacher Gord Graham, applied for and received a Leacross/R.Bern Foundation Arctic Scholarship, which will fund her two-week learning adventure. Part of her success in obtaining the scholarship came from a $50,000 award the eco-club won for an essay it submitted in a nationwide contest hosted by Staples. Her love of nature and dedication to protecting it began at an early age.
“
I appreciate the environment, which is why I want to find a career that will help preserve it.
“I went camping with my parents a lot when I was younger, and as I got older I couldn’t wait for my next opportunity to be in the outdoors,” said Elphinstone. “I appreciate the environment which is why I want to find a career that will help preserve it and understand our place in it.” Elphinstone’s love for the outdoors is matched only by her enthusiasm for science, including biology and physics, and she hopes to bring all of those attributes to the team. She is also looking forward to learning about other cultures, creating lasting connections

the students will participate in workshops, seminars and presentations, as well as learn about Arctic sovereignty, governance, and international relations. Expedition activities will include wildlife encounters with whales, seals and polar bears, as well as visits to archeological sites along the coast, including Eric the Red’s settlement. Part of their responsibilities will be to provide updates at www.studentsonice.com/ arctic2011 on their progress. Elphinstone said so much of her generation is tapped in to rapidly changing technology but don’t know how to use it productively, and it takes away from their connection to nature. She hopes that while she will be learning from and being inspired by professionals in the fields of science and nature, that she, too, can pass inspiration along to her peers and generations that come after her while finding her own career path. Since 2000, more than 1,600 high school and university students from 40 countries have visited polar regions with Students on Ice program.
with the students and professional explorers who will be leading the team, and understanding the different perspectives other cultures have on environmental responsibility. Five of the eight circumpolar nations will be represented on the trip and more than 12 languages will be spoken. “One of the most amazing things about it is the people, especially the professionals who work in these fields. I want to know, partly, how they’ve gotten so far and how they’ve done what they did. I also want to learn about their careers, what they think about them,” she said. Elphinstone leaves Nanaimo for Toronto on Saturday (July 23), where she’ll catch a connecting flight to join her team in Iceland, which they will explore for three days. From there, they will travel on an icebreaker to Greenland, and then to the northern reaches of Labrador and Nunavik where they will visit Inuit communities and learn about their perspectives on the effects of climate change. ICBC in need of competition The latest proposal from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is another clear indication that the Crown corporation is reaching the end of the road in its ability to properly serve the province’s motorists. ICBC announced this month that it has notified the B.C. Utilities Commission that it plans to apply for a rate hike. “What’s happened really is the economy has rebounded a PROPOSED lot faster than most people RATE HIKE have expected. That’s put more cars on the road,” for auto ICBC spokesman Mark Jan insurance not Vrem told the media, adding acceptable that an increase in bodyinjury claims as a result of from ICBC. wet weather. While most, if not all, businesses would see an economic rebound and additional customers as cause for celebration, ICBC apparently sees it as a negative. However, that stance leaves open a simple solution – if ICBC is troubled by an increase in drivers, perhaps the time has come to end the corporation’s monopoly on basic auto insurance coverage. The latest news comes less than two months after Christy Clark’s Liberal government shot down ICBC’s proposal to increase insurance rates for drivers who receive as little as a single speeding ticket. While those measures seemed excessive, they were imminently more fair than the proposal that will be put before the BCUC for consideration. The corporation has steadily increased rates on at-fault drivers, but this latest proposed hike would take safe drivers along for the ride. It’s time to see if private-sector insurance companies can provide the service at a better value to the province’s drivers.

Handling of garden issue disappointing To the Editor, Re: Urban agriculture can’t be held back, Letters, July 7. I am writing today in disbelief of how our elected officials in the District of Lantzville have acted. I have lived in Lantzville for 14 years and have thoroughly enjoyed living in a community that has retained its rural lifestyle. My respect for the Lantzville mayor and all but one councillor came into question several months ago when news of the Compassion Farm surfaced. Having a horticultural background and a strong interest in sustainable practices, this story caught my interest. So much so, that I attended a council meeting on July 11.
Speak up! You can comment on any story @ www.nanaimobulletin.com
During the meeting it became apparent that mayor and council had made its mind up on the issue. Other than Coun. Rod Negrave, none had any interest in addressing the discussion surrounding Compassion Farm. All I heard through the meeting was the fear of manure affecting ground water. There has been a tremendous amount of research done on this topic
and it is extremely complex, with many variables involved. Does council realize that using synthetic fertilizer would be more harmful? Has anyone tested these wells to see if there has been any effect? Was raw manure seen on site once or is this a regular occurrence? Why did the mayor and council not share their concerns with Compassion Farm and look for a solution? I would expect our mayor and council to visit the farm, discuss concerns they have regarding this operation, talk it out and come to some understanding. Instead they seem to be pushing the buttons by hiring a Victoria law firm to pursue this in court. I would
say that this is a waste of my tax dollars and they are not acting in Lantzville’s best interest. Is the Compassion Farm breaking some bylaws growing vegetables on a residentially zone piece of property which is sold at a public market? Apparently so. Is this the best way of dealing with the situation? In my mind, no. Do we need to work together and find a solution that everyone is happy with? Yes. I have always been proud of my community. At this point I am extremely disappointed in the actions of our local government. Jamie Wallace Lantzville
Readers respond: Feedback on news items Commuter rail line essential for Island To the Editor, Re: Passenger rail back on track, June 30. It is not enough for Premier Christy Clark to state that it’s “really important for people on the Island to have a passenger service for tourists, but also for freight.” This statement omits the most serious need, that it is absolutely essential that there be a rapid transit commuter line connecting the upper Island with Victoria. Since there is currently a plan afloat for building a rail transit line from Langford to Victoria, it would appear to be the optimum time for holding talks with the directors of that project with an eye to amalgamating the two systems by making use of the existing rail lines. Since the cost of appropriating land and building a new rail system will be astronomical, the savings made by utilizing these rails are too great to be ignored. When the government
makes pronouncements about the importance of being environmentally progressive, one would think they would embrace the opportunity to take thousands of cars off the highway on a daily basis. One can only hope that executive egos of the two systems will not impede a serious look at such an amalgamation. D. Custock Nanaimo

Other people’s cash eventually runs out To the Editor, Re: Monetary crisis not driven by socialist ways, Letters, July 5. This letter made the bizarre claim that, “Socialism is about taking care of people.” Many people know how socialism “takes care” of them. To the Editor, Re: Major project eyed for Cedar, July
The Qualicum Institute, a not-forprofit organization dedicated to promoting the principles and practices of sustainability, has followed with interest and dismay recent news stories involving the push to develop a major oceanfront resort community in the south Nanaimo/Cedar area. The City of Nanaimo’s approval of the 170-hectare Oceanview Golf Resort and Spa development, with some 2,677 homes, hotel, spa, and golf course, is controversial enough. Now Island Timberlands wants to combine a 24-hectare property zoned Rural Agricultural with an adjacent 23-hectares it owns that lies within the Urban Containment Boundary to create a twinned waterfront resort community with another hotel, commercial space, marina, and 2,400 more housing units. Regional District of Nanaimo chairman Joe Stanhope has rightly questioned the sustainability of such a huge resort development, which has the potential to add more than 9,000 new residents to the City of Nanaimo and the region. The development will put further strain on the city’s water treatment and supply system and increase the loading on the Greater Nanaimo Wastewater Treatment Plant, which only provides a primary level of treatment. Of course, the architect/engineering company pitching the resort/residential concept argues the development will “build a more sustainable community”, “protect sensitive ecosystems”, and “provide pedestrian access to the jewel of the lands (Cable Bay)”. What we will end up with is a higher-class example of urban sprawl, inevitable deterioration of the natural systems that support us along with increased demand on infrastructure that existing taxpayers will subsidize. Sustainability is ultimately about recognizing that there are limits to growth and having the will and foresight to live within those limits. Let’s see if the RDN board is willing to prove the merits of its new regional growth strategy and sustainability principle No. 1, making decisions that have regard for local and global consequences. MLA and NDP federal MP, Nanaimo has a 16 per cent unemployment rate, the same as Greece. The municipal government is using the ‘alternative approval process’ to take as much money as it can from residents. The Community Charter Act provides no cap on this taxation. Every man, woman and child in B.C. owes $16,500 in federal debt and $9,000 in provincial debt. Government spending is saddling future generations with crippling debts. We must stop following the catastrophic path of the socialist countries. Yet the HST referendum ignores the urgent need to reduce government spending. It only provides two choices: Overspend and pay more now (HST), or overspend and use debt to make our children pay more later (PST). As former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said, “The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” Bart Jessup Gabriola Island

Inbrief
Altrusa International of Nanaimo has assembled a crew of volunteers for a hands-on project to help Haven Society. With warm days following a wet spring, a healthy crop of tall weeds has taken over the grounds at Haven’s community services building. Altrusa members visit Haven every two weeks throughout the summer to pull weeds, cultivate and haul debris away. An added bonus was the discovery of treasured plants such as native ferns, evergreens and ornamental grasses planted 18 months ago when the new building was completed. The use of volunteer gardeners not only improves the property’s appearance, but also frees up

Pancake breakfast aids patients A volunteer group of parents who have – or had – a child with cancer, are looking for people around the province willing to host pancake breakfasts in their own homes, offices or elsewhere. Almost half of the families seeking treatment for their child in the Lower Mainland come from elsewhere in B.C., and transportation and accommodation costs can be a significant challenge. The B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents’ Association raises money to help these struggling families. The group is aiming for the biggest year yet and wants to get the word out to communities about B.C.’s Biggest Breakfast campaign, in which people or organizations host fundraising breakfasts at any time of the year. George Plumley, author of 100 Questions to Ask Before Building a Website, says it can take several weeks for search engines to pick up changes to a site and even longer to build valuable links and social media buzz. He suggests taking the quieter summer months to build up a store of useful articles, videos or other content for a site. Then slowly roll it out once or twice a week over the fall and not worry about it when things get busy. Plumley helps website owners plan for the fall during a free web seminar Thursday (July 21) at 11 a.m. For more information, including a registration link for the webinar, please visit www. shortordersites.com.

Tragedy on Jackass Mountain
Aside from the Sail Past on Wheels Parade, the new Commercial Street Bathtub Days Fair and the Bathtub Races themselves, the traditional three-days of entertainment at Maffeo Sutton Park continues this Marine Festival. Beginning Thursday (July 21), bands from across the Island perform at the park, culminating in the fireworks display Saturday night. The three days of music also features showcases of youth performers among the adults. The music starts at 3:30 p.m. with students from Headliners School of Performing Arts; 4:30 p.m. with Andrea Adams; 6 p.m. with Ryan McMahon and the Company Damn; 7:30 p.m. with Aidan Knight; and Emily Spiller closes out the night, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday’s entertainment begins at noon with VestaFire, a circus arts performing group for the whole family; 1:30 p.m. with NYSA Tune In, which recently won $25,000 from the Keg restaurant; 3 p.m. with Donal Patrick; 4:30 p.m. with Jason Buie Band; 6 p.m. with Atlas Collapses; 7:30 p.m. with Maurice; and 9 p.m. with Like A Martyr. Saturday continues at noon with VestaFire; 1:30 p.m. with a Youth Talent Showcase; 3:30 p.m. with Eric Harper; 4:30 p.m. with Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners; 6 p.m. with Pretzel Logic; 7:30 p.m. with Katzenjammers; and 9 p.m. with The Push.
Natural setting Lyndia Terre takes a moment to sketch what she sees in the new park at Moorecroft. The Nanoose-based artist is the first artist-in-residence for the Nature Trust of B.C. She will be working in Moorecroft, recently purchased as a park by the Regional District of Nanaimo, with an exhibition of her work in the summer of 2012. A preview takes place during Splash, a fundraiser for Moorecroft Aug. 13. For information, please call 250-468-9010.

words worth noting
Charles Scheideman spent 27 years policing isolated areas of B.C. and shares his stories in the second collection of his memoirs. Jackass Mountain is not a major landmark on the highway through the Fraser Canyon, but it did see its fair share of motor vehicle accidents during Scheideman’s patrols. He had to scramble down the cliff to discover the decaying corpse of a crash victim and to rescue a driver lucky enough to survive his vehicle’s plunge over the edge by jumping to safety. The author writes of the challenges of policing rural and remote areas, often alone or in two-person detachments, where they become not just police officers but social service workers as well.

Musician shares message A man with a message, Leon Rosselson performs his thoughtprovoking songs at St. Andrew’s United Church. The British singer-songwriter has been writing and performing topical, provocative and satirical songs for more than 50 years. His career began as a member of the Galliards and continued with more serious, and at times humourous, writings in the early 1960s. Last year, he released The Last Chance: Eight Songs on Israel-Palestine, a collection that reflects on his experiences and concerns as a secular Jew faced with one of the critical issues of our times, the Israel-Palestine conflict. Rosselson perfor ms at the church Wednesday (July 20) at 7
p.m. Tickets $12; $10/low income. Please call 250-245-9525. He also performs at the Roxy on Gabriola tonight (July 19) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $15. Please call 250247-7476 or e-mail bob@bossin.com to reserve a seat. The concert will also feature selections from two art projects coordinated by B.C.-based artist Elizabeth Shefrin on the IsraeliPalestinian peace, with contributions from people worldwide, and a collection of fabric self-portraits and messages created by Palestinian women and children from Bethlehem. The concert is organized by MidIslanders for Justice and Peace in the Middle East. For more information, please e-mail info@midislanders.com.

Pirates capture pennant
Main camp challenges V.I. Raiders BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The V.I. Raiders say they got football season off to a “great start” this past weekend. N a n a i m o ’s C a n a d i a n Junior Football League team held its main camp Thursday through Monday at Port Alberni. Coach Matthew “Snoop” Blokker said players worked hard and made progress. “We’ve given ourself a great start and something to build on,” Blokker said. “That’s what camp’s all about.” The Raiders held nine practices over the five days. “Both mentally and physically, we were challenged a lot by this camp,” said Andrew Oake, veteran linebacker. “We had a lot of conditioning before practices and you’re just trying to keep your mind right when you’re tired and stay strong.” Other B.C. Football Conference teams are working hard at this time of year, too, but Blokker said he can’t worry about what the rest of the league is doing. “We just do it our way here and we know how we can prepare ourselves for Game 1,” he said. “If it compares to any of the other years, we’re right on pace.” Mike Schaper, veteran receiver, said the Raiders

“work that extra mile” to be better. “I’m not saying other teams don’t, but I know for a fact that we work ridiculously hard…” he said. “The work ethic is probably the No. 1, unquestionable thing.” The rookies showed it, too, Schaper said, so when the veterans see that, it helps to create the ‘family bond’
the Raiders seek. Some of the youngsters can sure play football, too. “We have some guys right now, that if they keep focused and they keep learning at the pace they’re learning at, they could definitely start for us and contribute in big ways,” said Oake. Blokker said especially on defence, there were some
great surprises from rookies. Dylan Chapdelaine, formerly of the Barsby Bulldogs and Nanaimo Redmen, turned coaches’ heads at camp at the middle linebacker position. “He was just a stud this weekend and solidified himself as the starter, I believe, going into Week 1,” said Blokker. ◆ See ‘FOOTBALL’ /30
The Nanaimo Pirates have a pennant to prove they were the premier league’s best team in the regular season. The Hub City Paving Pirates (34-14) won three out of four games this past weekend to close out their schedule. Other B.C. Premier Baseball League teams still have remaining games, but no one can catch the Pirates. After sweeping the White Rock Tritons on a rainy Saturday at Serauxmen Stadium by scores of 5-2 and 3-1, the Pirates travelled to North Vancouver on Sunday to play the North Shore Twins, while the second-place Coquitlam Reds were in action elsewhere. The Pirates lost the early game 6-2 to the Twins, but won the finale 4-2. “We were just trying to win our ball games, and then Coquitlam lost their two, so it just happened,” said Kenton Schroter, Pirates pitcher. “Our goal from the start was to get first place and just lose 10 games. We lost 14, but it’s still a successful season to win the pennant.” Nick Smiley was the winning pitcher in the pennant-clinching victory, throwing a complete game and allowing one earned run while striking out nine. Cody Andreychuk had two hits and two RBIs and Justin Clarkson went 2-for-3. BASE LINES … The Pirates won their only other PBL pennant in 2001 … The team’s first-round best-of-three series will be played at Serauxmen Stadium against a to-be-determined opponent, probably starting Sunday (July 24) … To read an expanded version of this article, please visit www.nanaimobulletin.com. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Clippers take orientation camp seriously
I
PLAYERS SHAKE off nerves, show their stuff for new head coach. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo Clippers prospects including Jesse Neher, left, and Kelyn Opel battle for a puck in the corner during an intrasquad game Sunday morning at orientation camp at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
Forty players had something to prove, which made for a fast-paced summer camp. The Nanaimo Clippers got to look at a lot of players over two days this past weekend at orientation camp at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. “It’s good to get back together with everyone and rekindle and see some new guys that are coming up in the system…” said Andrew Gladiuk, the team’s MVP last year. “Everyone was going hard and taking it seriously and having some fun out there, too.” He said guys were a bit “on edge” knowing that the new coach, Mike Vandekamp, was evaluating them and making decisions. “The beginning stage is pretty nervous,” said Brayden Jaw, another veteran forward. “It’s a new coach, new organization, new owners, all that stuff. You get nervous at the start but I think once the first practice kicked in we all got used to it, got comfortable and as the games went on we got better and better.”

in the best-of-three series. “The guys settled in and played really well,” said Roger Dubyna, the team’s coach. “Defensively we really pressured them, kept them to the outside most of the night.” He said his offensive guys weren’t totally in sync, but were still able to get the better of the Caps’ defenders. “Once they started to get the feel for who they were with, they moved the ball really well,” said Dubyna.
“Our guys were a little quicker and a little better on the pick-and-roll game.” B.J. Potter, Kyle Noble and Shane Chalker led the Timbermen with two goals each and Ryan Dietterle, Keith Nyberg, Kyle Couling and Reid MacPhail also scored. Aaron Vanderhorst added three assists. Sten Lundgren ear ned the win in goal, making 36 saves and allowing only two goals against in a relief effort.

DBL T-men win last game, advance to playoffs The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen are contenders as the playoffs are underway. The city’s West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association team (8-6) won its last regular-season game 10-6 on Saturday, against the Royal City Capitals at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The game had playoff implications – the two teams were slated to meet in the first round of the playoffs no matter what, but now Nanaimo gets home-floor advantage
The unusual timing of the campmade it impossible for players to put their best skate forward, but they certainly tried. “I know all the veteran guys wanted to make a good impression on coach, so they did what they could to get in shape, and I’m sure the guys that are looking to get themselves a spot at main camp came in here in good shape,” said Colton Cyr, team captain. “So it was a lot more highpaced than you’d normally see in a little summer camp like this, which only made it better.” The intrasquad games were a lot of fun, he said, and all the Clippers played like they wanted to win. “Obviously we’re not going to be in mid-season form, but it’s good to get out there and get our legs going again,” Gladiuk said. So the orientation camp was a benefit now, and will offer more benefits in September when the team reassembles for training camp. “We’re going to be ready to go as soon as main camp opens,” Gladiuk said. “We’ll all be more comfortable with everyone and know what the program is and I think it’ll help us in the long run.” ICE CHIPS … The Nanaimo Clippers are selling season tickets for the 2011-12 B.C. Hockey League season. For info, call 250-751-0593.

Timbermen lose twice SR. A TEAM falls at home, on road.
I
The Nanaimo Timber men lost a couple of games and a couple of steps in the playoff race. The Coastal Windows Timber men senior A lacrosse team was defeated in back-to-back contests Saturday and Sunday, losing 12-7 to the Langley Thunder at Frank Crane Arena and then falling 13-7 to the Maple Ridge Burrards the next night on the mainland.
Both games were closer than the score might suggest. Saturday’s contest was 6-4 through two periods, but the Thunder’s transition game sparked the team to a 5-0 run to start the third period and end any drama. Scott Ranger scored four goals for the Timbermen and Lewis Ratcliff had two goals and three assists. Mike MacLeod had Nanaimo’s other goal. Zack Boychuk played most of the game in goal as his team was outshot 47-40. The next night’s loss came against an opponent the Timbermen
had defeated twice earlier in the season. Nanaimo star ted slow, falling behind 5-1 through 20 minutes, but reversed things in the second to tie the game 6-6 heading into the third. Ranger had five goals, while Ratcliff was held to four assists. Mike and Mat MacLeod had the other T-men markers. Ray Hodgkinson went the distance in goal as the team was outshot 49-39. GAME ON ‌ The Timber men (5-7-2) play the Thunder (7-62) in the Fraser Valley on Wednesday (July 20) in a 7 p.m. start.

Nanaimo Timbermen player Simon Stocks, front, protects the ball from a Langley Thunder checker during Saturday night’s Western Lacrosse Association game at Frank Crane Arena. The visitors won 12-7.
Football team identifies strengths, weaknesses ◆ From /28 Also making a great first impression were three newcomers in the defensive back corps – corner Adam Laurensse, halfback Skylor Letcher and safety Cole Bishop. “We knew we’d have a good defensive line this year, there’s no doubt about it, but the rest of the defence is shaping up pretty nice, Blokker said. On offence, he liked the continuity his quarterbacks and receivers showed, but noted that execution needs to improve on run plays.
The coach believes he still needs to add depth to the defensive front seven and the offensive line. “We have a really clear idea of how talented we are and maybe where some of our weaknesses are at this point in time, and what we still need to do,â€? Blokker said. “I think we’ll go out and accomplish that.â€? GAME ON ‌ The Raiders play an exhibition game in Victoria Saturday (July 23) against the Westshore Rebels at 2 p.m. at Bear Mountain Stadium. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

YOUR “NANAIMO MERCHANT FLEET” WELCOMES YOU Nanaimo Marine Festival & “Great” International World Championship Bathtub Race Nanaimo harbor was the scene of a bathtub race extravaganza at the first race in 1967. As the City of Nanaimo’s “Centennial Event” that year, close to 200 tubbers (in every type of craft imaginable) entered the fun competition and amazingly, 47 completed the 36 mile course to Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove across the straits of Georgia. Now the “Great RACE” finishes at Departure Bay in Nanaimo covering a very grueling course that leaves Nanaimo harbor, circles Entrance Island and then up to and around Winchelsea Island and then back to Departure Bay in Nanaimo. In the early days it was indeed a challenge to just get past the starting line in the choppy confusion caused by an extra 785 small and large observation and escort boat in Nanaimo harbor. From the confusion of a first time bathtub race 44 years ago, the Nanaimo to Nanaimo “Great” INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE & 4 day Nanaimo Marine Festival has evolved. Where once a select band of tubbers were the highlight they now share the spotlight with many other land and water events which are interesting and often spectacular to watch. This years Nanaimo Marine Festival’s salute is to the “100th Anniversary of the St. John Ambulance Nanaimo Brigade”. The salute will also be the theme
for the “SAIL PAST on WHEELS FUN PARADE” on the Saturday of Bathtub Weekend. The various events throughout the city in July culminate with the KICK OFF on Thursday, July 21st with the opening of the LNBS Marine Festival Food Fair, Kiddies Harbourside Playdock, Kiddies Karnival, “TIM HORTONS” Marine Festival Entertainment Stage and the children’s programs at Maffeo Sutton and Swy-a-lana Lagoon parks adjacent to the Nanaimo Harbour. Also for your enjoyment are the many informative static displays on boat safety, military, water sports plus many others. On Saturday, July 23rd at 10:30 AM the annual “Sail Past on Wheels Fun Parade” takes place through the Old City Quarter and the City Center. Also down at the waterfront the Marine Festival Food Fare, the Kiddies Harborside Playdock, TIM HORTONS Marine Festival Entertainment Stage, the Kiddies Karnival, along with many other static displays and the Loyal Order of the Moose Bavarian Garden held in Maffeo Sutton park and various events in the harbor. In the evening Vancouver Island’s premier fireworks display, the spectacular “QUALITY FOODS” Festival of Lights & Music fireworks display takes place in the Nanaimo harbor at 10:00 PM. Then join the thousands of excited spectators as the 44th annual “Great”
INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE starting at 11:00 AM sharp in Nanaimo harbour for the approximate 1 ½ hour challenge in the straits of Georgia gia to the “PEPSI FINISH LINE” at Departure Bay. After the tubs leave the excitement continues both on land and in the water with the Marine Festival Food Fair, the Kiddies Karnival, Harbourside Playdock, If you prefer (and remember you can do both) you can join us at the always spectacular “PEPSI FINISH LINE” at Departure Bay beach and watch the finish of the “Great” RACE and enjoy the many food and refreshment booths Four full days of fun and activities for the young, old and inbetween, family oriented and held in NANAIMO, the Sun-Porch of Canada, the Jewel of the West and the Bathtub Racing Capital of the World, during the always (well almost always) sunny month of July.
