Policy created for community school programs REVIEW FINDS schools lack strong advocate.
I
BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo trustees want to keeper a tighter leash on the district’s community schools programs. They created a new policy partly with that aim in mind. The biggest change in the proposed policy and procedure is the creation of a community school review committee that would look at what is happening in community schools each year, said trustee Dot Neary. “It’s kind of more of an ongoing oversight,” she said. “[The program] needs some overall umbrella that continually examines and keeps reviewing what is happening in these schools.” Community schools bring the community and school together, operating programs and services outside regular school hours to better serve the neighbourhood.
Neary said the changes are motivated by results of an independent review of the community schools program conducted two years ago, which found that many teachers, support workers and parents with children in these schools don’t have a clear understanding of what a community school is all about. The review also found the program is missing a strong advocate to keep the schools on track. The new committee, which would include senior district administrators, would review community schools each year. T h e c u r re n t p o l i cy requires a review twice in five years by trustees and members of each community school’s advisory council, which means schools are reviewing their own designations rather than being looked at by someone not directly involved. “I would like to think it will make a big difference in our understanding of what community schools are doing,” said Neary. “We don’t really know where we’re at with our community schools right now.” ◆ See ‘COLLECTIVE’ /4

Cpl. Keith Stone, with the Nanaimo RCMP’s forensic identification section, takes photographs of the scene where two men were stabbed Friday afternoon near Value Village. For more information, please see page 6.
Nanaimo men killed in mainland crash Two Nanaimo families are grieving the loss of loved ones after a fatal crash on Highway 10 in Surrey Saturday. Fifty-two-year-old Jovan Salapurna and 21-year-old Jarrett Swackhamer died at the scene after a speeding Chevy Cavalier travelling the wrong way on Highway 10 slammed into
their Nissan Pathfinder. Swackhamer’s girlfriend was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Cavalier also died in the crash, which happened shortly after 1:45 a.m. when police received a call that a man was driving erratically westbound on Highway 10, just
west of King George Boulevard. Police said the driver of the Cavalier was from the Lower Mainland, but have not yet identified him. Police believe speed was a factor, but haven’t determined whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Police after suspected copper thief A man who police believe electrocuted himself T hursday evening while cutting down a hydro pole south of Nanaimo was able to walk away from the scene. Police received a call shortly after 5:30 p.m. from a passerby who found a downed B.C. Hydro pole and an injured man bleeding from his mouth on Spruston Road near Cassidy. The man, who had been unconscious at first, got into a dark green truck with a female and drove off b e fo re e m e r g e n cy crews arrived. The line was dismantled and Ladysmith RCMP believe the man cut the pole with a chainsaw, but the pole fell in the wrong direction. “It appears that the individual was electrocuted and probably suffered some serious internal injuries,” said Ladysmith RCMP Staff Sgt. Roger Plamondon. “He’s very lucky he didn’t die right there.” The man is described as six-feet tall, 180 pounds, bald with tattoos on each arm. Plamondon said police get reports of copper wire theft in that area about once a month. Ted Olynyk, B.C. Hydro spokesman, said the company is seeing more and more copper wire thefts. “It’s just a question of time before someone is severely injured or killed while attempting to steal copper wire,” he said. Anyone with information on this incident can call Ladysmith RCMP at 250-245-2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

VIEX promises weekend of fun Fair provides lots of entertainment, yet sticks with its agricultural roots and mission. BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Agriculture, rock ‘n’ roll and family fun collide during the Vancouver Island Exhibition’s annual country fair. This year’s event runs Friday to Sunday (Aug. 19-21) and promises “Fun for the Whole Herd.” Lynn Haley, VIEX president, said the fair offers something for every member of the family to enjoy, including main stage entertainment, commercial expo, skateboarding competition, roller derby display, agricultural demonstrations and more. Haley said the VIEX is moving more toward an entertainment fair, but it hasn’t strayed far from its roots and mission of raising awareness about agriculture. “Each year the entertainment is a huge draw,” she said. This year residents can jump into the fun one day early as the exhibition opens for a special limited evening of entertainment Thursday (Aug. 18) on the Community Festival Stage from 5:30-9 p.m. People can watch various entertainers, the preliminary round of the songbird competition and enjoy fair rides from Shooting Star Midway. Admission is by donation of either cash or food for the Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. People can also expect to enjoy traditional favourites such as main stage entertainment, the commercial expo, vintage tractor club displays and amusement rides.

From square dancing, above, to the midway rides, right, this year’s Vancouver Island Exhibition has something for every member of the family to enjoy. The fair runs Friday to Sunday (Aug. 19-21) at Beban Park.
This year’s entertainment lineup on the main stage features a variety of performers including Bobs and Lolo, Atlas Collapses, Braeden Marshal, Prism, The Kerplunks and Big River. Fair organizers strive to bring in local entertainers every year. Don Boyd, main stage director, said he’s excited about this year’s Friday and Saturday entertainment lineups. “We wanted to raise the bar as far as bringing in artists that are more established,” he said. “It adds to the entertainment value.” Boyd said Aaron Lines, who performs Friday evening, is sure to draw a crowd. “He’s the most played Canadian country artist in the last 10 years. He’s probably the biggest coun-

try artist we’ve had,” said Boyd. There are performers for everyone’s taste from country to rock to children’s entertainers, he said, adding it brings a different dynamic to the day as it progresses. “It adds to the whole flavour, to the atmosphere of the event,” said Boyd. The commercial expo, located in Cliff McNabb Arena, features about 30 exhibitors showcasing their wares and services. It runs Friday and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. New this year is the Garden City Cat Club display. The club is hosting a cat show and spectators can watch cat championships where furry felines compete for top spot in four to
seven rings before a panel of judges. The competitors will amass points to win the title of supreme champion. The event takes place in the Little Red Barn and includes educational materials, cat supplies and a junior activity centre. On Saturday, people can watch the Harbour City Rollers derby girls compete and participate in the Alternative Groove skateboarding competition in Frank Crane Arena.
“Come out and enjoy everything. We are going to have a great year,” said Haley. Admission per day is $4 for ages seven to 12, $7 for ages 13-18, $10 for adults and $3.50 for seniors or people can purchase a three day pass for $20. Festival gates open daily from Friday to Sunday at 9 a.m. For more information and an entertainment schedule, please go to www.viex.ca. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Ferry terminal remains closed Ferry service between downtown Nanaimo and Gabriola Island continues to be disrupted as part of a damaged passenger walkway at the Nanaimo terminal is repaired. On Friday, a truck full of asphalt belonging to Royal Paving that was making repairs to the terminal went onto the wooden trestle, causing it to collapse. The truck plunged four metres into the water, landing upside down. The driver went into the water with the truck, according to B.C. Ferries, but escaped serious injury. A B.C. Ferries safety officer, working below the trestle in a boat, also escaped injury. The damaged terminal has forced B.C. Ferries to operate a water taxi out of the Nanaimo Harbour for foot passengers while vehicle traffic took the MV Quinsam between Gabriola Island Duke Point terminal. “We’re continuing to use the water taxi and Duke Point until further notice,” said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries spokeswoman, Monday morning. An update on the situation was expected later Monday after the News Bulletin’s deadline. B.C. Ferries is working with WorkSafeBC and other agencies to determine what caused the accident and if there are any environmental consequences.

Panel recommends Hydro cut BY TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS
B.C. Hydro should reduce its proposed rate increases by half and prune back a corporation that has become overstaffed and micromanaged, according to a review panel appointed by the B.C. government. Energy Minister Rich Coleman said Thursday he accepts the recommendations of a report by the three deputy ministers he appointed in April. They include reducing B.C. Hydro’s rate application to the eight per cent interim increase already being charged this year, followed by rate hikes of 3.9 per cent in each of the next two years. The B.C. Utilities Commission must a p p r ove a n y r a t e increases. The rate proposal currently before the commission is for increases of nearly 10 per cent this year, next year and 2013. With an aggressive reconstruction and expansion of the power grid underway, B.C. Hydro had been planning to raise rates by about 50 per cent in the next five years. Rolling back the increases requires B.C. Hydro to cut costs by $800 million over three years. The review panel estimates that would mean a reduction of up to 1,000 of the corporation’s 6,000 employees. B.C. Hydro CEO Dave Cobb said the corpora-
tion has already identified 250 positions that can be eliminated, and is working on efficiency measures that will cut another 350 jobs. That should be sufficient to meet the government’s target of easing the impact of hydro bills on B.C. ratepayers, Cobb said. NDP energy critic John Horgan focused on the panel’s recommendation that the government rethink its 2016 deadline for B.C. Hydro to become self-sufficient in electricity. The review panel
found that B.C. Hydro’s staff grew by 41 per cent between 2006 and 2010. That was before it reabsorbed BC Transmission Corp., spun off as a separate entity in 2002. B.C. Hydro currently employs 650 engineers, which the panel noted is six times the number working for the transportation ministry, administering a construction program of about the same size. Coleman and Cobb stressed that B.C. Hydro would not compromise safety or reliability to achieve the
savings. Deferred projects would be things like building upgrades, while major dam refits and preparation for the Site C dam on the Peace River will continue. Coleman said the transportation ministry used to engineer each new bridge down to the last bolt before calling for bids to construct it. Now it sets performance and cost benchmarks and lets private sector bidders find the most efficient way to meet them. He said B.C. Hydro needs to do the same. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Stabbing sends two to Nanaimo hospital The victim of a stabbing incident behind Value Village Friday and his alleged attacker were released from hospital on the weekend. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said both men were arrested at the scene until police sorted out details of the altercation. The incident happened about 3 p.m. Friday when the men got into an altercation. Police are not saying what started the fight. The men were taken to hospital, one with a stab wound to his hand and the other with an injury to his forehead. Both were released from hospital that night after being treated for their injuries. Police recommended a charge of assault with a weapon against one man, 57. He has been released on a promise to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Sept. 6.

Activists plan return to Japan BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
The last time Marley Daviduk and Carisa Webster travelled to Japan to document the slaughter of dolphins, they barely escaped with their own lives after a massive earthquake and resulting tsunami destroyed much of the coastline along northern Japan. flooded in, tearing apart the town of Otsuchi. What wasn’t destroyed by water was on fire, and the pair watched as human bodies swirled in the devastation. Forced to abandon their mission last March, Daviduk and Webster are returning to Japan in September, this time to Taiji, their original destination, to document and observe dolphins being butchered for meat. Those that aren’t slaughtered are abused into submission and sold in the live dolphin trade. “Taiji, made famous through the movie The Cove, ended the slaughter a month early last season so we changed our plans and went 1,000 kilometres up the coast to Otsuchi, said Daviduk. “We’re going back to do what we had intended to do in the first place and that is

They plan to stay in Taiji filming for three weeks. In March, Daviduk and Webster were working with activist group Sea Shepherd. With that organization unable to provide members to film this fall, Webster said it’s as important as ever to have “compassionate eyes documenting the slaughter and sending the story out to the world. The pair established their own blog (at www. cetaceandefenseleague. blogspot.com) to share their stories and experiences, including photos of the devastation from their first trip. They both took on multiple jobs to help pay for their travel and accommodations, but have established donation options on the blog site to provide them with financial assistance. Webster said despite the risks, their efforts are worth it. “We’re very determined and compassionate people, so I think we’ll get done what we need to get done, said Webster. “We feel we need to go to Japan in particular because our oceans are in dire condition and nobody is really talking about that. Large animals like dolphins are an important part of our ecosystem which we all depend on. We’re devastating the dolphin population and it needs to be known.

Historic vote gives Nanoose band control of economics
Goose, a one-year-old male Harris hawk, folds his wings after landing in Kevin Letts’s hand. Letts, owner of P.K. Bird Control Services, rotates his eight birds through shifts to keep gulls away from workers and machinery operating on open faces at the RDN landfill.

other birds can see it,” Letts said. As the RDN landfill has been transformed into a sophisticated solid waste management site that now captures landfill gas to produce electrical power, the role of the raptor program is shifting. In 2010 an old portion of the landfill that was in danger of leaking rainwater needed upgrading. The fix required raising the level of fill to increase the slope angle so rainwater could run off more easily and then put a new weather cap on the site. McIver said the work triggered her worst nightmare in November when it displaced the gulls that normally loafed on that portion of the landfill and they repositioned themselves by the hundreds on nearby roofs. Staff called in a seagull expert for advice and at the same time decided to allow the birds to choose another roosting site within landfill property. That solved the immediate problem, but the birds could be displaced again when the regional district permanently closes the six-hectare section to create a public nature park, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2013. Combining the use of raptors with new landscape design features and fully diverting food and other organic waste from the landfill should solve the gull problem. “Before we get to the actual park construction next year, we don’t want those seagulls coming back and roosting there because the nature park can’t be a place for seagulls,” McIver said. “So, in the detailed design of the nature park, we’re being informed by our expert on seagulls as to how we should landscape it, how we should design it, so that we’re not encouraging the birds to come and stay there. We’ve learned a lot about seagulls.”

A historic land code vote earlier this week gives the Snawnaw-as First Nation control of its own economic future without the interference of government red tape. Members of the Nanoose band voted to remove reserve land, nearly 65 hectares, from the Indian Act. Of the 160 eligible voters, 100 of whom live on reserve, 79 voted ‘yes’ to approve the Te’mewx Snawnaw-as Mustimxw Land Code. Nine voted against the process. “I’m excited and ecstatic. It’s a history-making vote for Nanoose so we can forge ahead and control our own destiny,” said Tom Bob, a Snaw-naw-as councillor and land manager. “It will not only create more economic opportunities for Nanoose, but will also help benefit mainstream society.” The vote means the band no longer has to go through the government to get initiatives or projects approved, Bob said, adding it took years for a decision, which many businesses were unwilling to endure and many opportunities were lost. “It was a very long bureaucratic process,” he said. Bob said essentially everything remains status quo on the reserve – people with leases or permits in place will remain unaffected. The nation hasn’t engaged in any talks with businesses regarding future opportunities; however, it has sent out a call for proposals to see if there are any interested parties. Nanoose joins about 35 other nations, out of 80 across Canada, that have passed land code votes. Chief Robert Louie of the Westbank First Nation, chairman of the First Nations Land Advisory Board, said the vote gives the Nanoose First Nation total jurisdiction over its land.

here’s no free lunch, not even for seagulls hanging out at the local landfill. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s landfill on Cedar Road has given seagulls, crows and other birds that pick garbage the bum’s rush since it started using raptors to control birds in 1991. Birds feeding from landfills pose health and safety hazards for landfill employees, as well as residents and workers on neighbouring properties. The RDN landfill was among the first in B.C. to use raptors to control unwanted birds. At the time, some landfills used noise cannons to frighten off flocks or strung monofilament wire, similar to heavy fishing line, above the sites to foil birds’ attempts to land. Birds often became ensnared in the wire and had to be killed. Many landfills still use noise cannons, but with private properties in close proximity around the RDN

facility, loud bangs would upset the neighbours plus indiscriminately frightening birds off the site creates an unacceptable health and safety risk. Raptors are quiet, environmentally safe and can clear the landfill’s open working faces, while enabling birds to settle within landfill property boundaries. “If we didn’t have the raptors, those gulls and their droppings would be all over that equipment and our workers wouldn’t be able to see,” said McIver. Hawks kill and eat gulls, so every gull knows it risks death flying onto the working faces of the landfill where Kevin Letts, owner of P.K. Bird Control Services, works his hawks. Letts has eight birds and rotates them through to keep them exercised. “They all fly hard,” Letts said. Having multiple birds means if one hawk is injured, sick or simply flies off and fails to return, another can take its place. Most working birds are one to 10 years old. Belle, a 21-year-old red tail

STI discussion not for e-mail There’s a centuries-old saying about good intentions most people should be familiar with. And while the idea of reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections is noble, there are a few problems with the plan to let people e-mail their lovers to warn them they could have an STI. First of all, the rather cute e-cards developed for the B.C. Centre for Disease Control could make some people believe the issue of STIs is not something to take seriously. This is particularly a concern for young people who are just beginning an active sex life. The ability to send these e-cards anonymously is supposed to make it easier for people to warn their lovers to get checked. That’s great if it allows someone to get a diagnosis and be treated before a disease can do irreparable damage. However, there’s a problem if the message some people hear is that transmitting an STI is no big deal because you can anonymously inform your partners after the fact. Managing intimate relationships has always been tricky territory for men and women. That’s no exception for the current generation of young adults who seem to spend as much time communicating electronically as they do in person. Many older adults find it mindboggling that some people feel it’s fair to end a relationship by changing your status on Facebook. Having sex requires a level of maturity and if someone is old enough to be intimate with another person, they need to be able to understand the potential consequences of their action. It’s fine to take a shortcut if it saves someone from a lifetime of suffering because of an untreated STI. But let’s not pretend sending an anonymous e-card is the same as taking personal responsibility. Hell, any of us might not be around next year. One thing I’ve learned over the past couple years being with friends who have had cancer and didn’t make it, is that we’re all here now, having fun and there’s no point, in this moment, in worrying about possible futures. And we keep laughing as I deal the cards, dare them to bet heavy and they clean out the house again. I get why Mackenzie is so dedicated to his work and understand the thing about him I couldn’t put my finger on earlier is that his work is something that will likely never fall within my frame of experience. “It can be pretty exciting hearing a kid come back and talk about his experience kayaking like it was a zip line,” Mackenzie said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Recovery funded by supply To the Editor, Re: Quit-smoking plan draws critics, Aug. 11. If the government is going to start giving nicotine addicts nicotine patches, prescriptions, and gums to help them kick their habit, then why not start supplying the heroin and meth addicts with heroin patches and meth gum? Because the government decides which drugs to legalize, to tax and then to feel socially responsible for. I guess I’ll just have to hold out hope for a caffeineaddicts patch and an alcoholics pill and see if the government jumps to fund their recovery by supply, too. Christina Windle via e-mail

Smart meters not safe, green To the Editor, Re: Smart meters make sense, Opinion, Aug. 13. After much research, the evidence is conclusive. Smart meters and their billing program make no sense, have no redeeming value to consumers and expose significant reasons to reject the entire program. There are health/safety issues that affect everyone, not just electro-sensitive individuals. Many in the Toronto area are writing in about how sick they have become since smart meters were installed. There are security/privacy and interference issues. Wireless signals can easily be hacked into, leaving householders vulnerable to anyone monitoring for resident activity or absence. And they can interfere with pacemakers and security alarms. Economically, 3,000 workers lose their jobs. Installation costs alone – paid by B.C. taxpayers – are estimated at $1 billion – followed by predictable, increased charges for users. Ontario Energy Board’s Smart Meter Initiative writes:

Smart meters not the safe, green initiative they’re purported to be, says letter writer.
“With time-of-use pricing, the kW/h rate will vary depending on the time of day, day of the week and month of the year.” Can B.C. residents become seasonal, nocturnal conservationists and only use air conditioning (or heating), TVs, computers, water heaters and stoves after 10 p.m.? Ontario MP Randy Hiller discovered local rates doubled and in 8,000 cases, tripled. But when over billing
page breaking story left a bad taste in the mouths of readers worldwide. It also made people wonder about what goes on in newspaper offices. In the old days we had to dig for the news. There were no search engines, Wikipedia or even Internet, so research was done in libraries or by making several calls to several experts. Investigative reporting took time. How we put out so many in-depth broadsheet (as opposed to tab-sized) stories by deadline still amazes me. My concern is what we gained in time may be lost in trust. Trust is such a big part of what we do as reporters and journalists. One day I was having lunch with friends when I overheard a pathologist and a lawyer talking at the next table. Over the years, I’ve acquired the knack of listening and talking at the same time. Comes in handy at parties. My antenna is always up. On this day, my ears perked up when I heard how the

News hounds face ethical questions daily My brother Christopher, who works for CTV, was interviewed by a reporter about his knowledge of computer hacking and how people can protect their privacy. He sent me the original video clip noting that most of the interview was left on the cutting room floor during editing. Alas. His moment of fame gone in a mere fleeting moment. The “hacker” news story came on the heels of the Rupert Murdoch newspaper scandal, which is fast growing legs. More and more reporters (with private investigators) and editors are being dragged into the muck. The quick decision to end the life of News of the World newspaper after 168 years on the newstands did little to quiet the masses. It only begged more questions. murder victim died in a news story we were covering. When the police later refused to reveal the manner of death (the victim was shot execution-style in the head) I logged the information not in my hard drive, but in my brain. Having no yellow streak, I did not report what I overheard at lunch but I was able to use it to get a better story. Every day news hounds face ethical questions. Big and small. Do we correct bad grammar if it’s a quote? Do we run a story before checking (not just saying ‘could not be reached’ for comment) with the other side? Is there any such thing as ‘off the record’? Like every other profession, how people conduct themselves in the newspaper world is more about personal choice and ethics than it is about their jobs. ◆ Teresa Mallam writes for the Prince George Free Press, an affiliate newspaper of Black Press.

Duffers needed for charity
CHRIS HAMLYN/THE NEWS BULLETIN
There’s nothing like a good day on the golf course all in support of a worthwhile cause. Colliers Inter national MidIsland Charity Golf Tournament in support of the Columbian Centre Society is scheduled for Sept. 9 at the Nanaimo Golf Club, but 40 more golfers are needed to sign up by Aug. 26 for the event to come to fruition. The tournament is intended for the full range of golfers, from hackers to champions. The idea is simply to have fun and raise some funds for the society. Registration is $165 and includes a round of golf, power cart, dinner and prizes. A limited number of golf club rentals and golf balls are available by calling the clubhouse at 250-758-6332. Teams of four or indivuals are encouraged to sign up by e-mailing Linda Ryder at linda.ryder@

Back to school promotion aids Tour de Rock Nanaimo North Town Centre is putting some fun into its back to school promotion by tying it in to the Cops for Cancer/Tour de Rock. The promotion begins Friday (Aug. 19) and runs until Sept. 11 and includes a display in the mall’s centre court featuring photos and biographies of riders Chris Bush of Black Press and RCMP Const. Sandi Holman of Nanaimo, and Const. Tom Gill of Port Alberni. The promotion also includes a draw to win breakfast with the three riders, an Acer Notebook from Best Buy and a backpack full of school supplies and gift certificates. The winning package is valued at $830. For more information on the promotion, please call 250-758-8111, ext. 0. The Tour de Rock is a 1,000 kilometre ride down the Island from Sept. 24 to Oct. 7.
Hockey helmets offered through car dealerships CHEVROLET provides first helmet to fiveyear-old children.
I
Chevrolet is providing fiveyear-old children across Canada an opportunity to get their first hockey helmet for free. Starting Friday (Aug. 19), parents can register for their child’s free helmet through the auto manufacturer’s Chevrolet Hockey Helmet Program. The program gives parents peace of mind while instilling the importance of on-ice safety from the beginning of their child’s sporting involvement in hockey.
All players born in 2006 who register to play hockey with Hockey Canada in the 2011-12 season will be eligible to receive a free Bauer helmet from Chevrolet. Parents who sign up at www. chevrolethockey.ca can pick up their Chevrolet Safe and Fun Hockey package containing a certificate for a new Bauer 2100 hockey helmet from their Chevrolet dealer. Nanaimo’s Laird Wheaton Chevrolet is located at 2590 Bowen Rd. The certificate can be exchanged for the helmet at Forzani retail outlets including Sport Chek, Sport Mart, InterSport and Sports Experts.

It is a suspension of millions and millions of particles that reflect light perfectly in billions of directions to make the skin’s surface appear completely flawless. Within seconds, pores appear to disappear, fine lines appear to vanish, and the skin’s texture appears to be nearly perfect. Ninjas on the move NinjaSpy joins The Perfect Trend and more at all-ages show in Nanaimo to celebrate new album release NinjaSpy shares their blend of metal, ska, grunge, reggae, funk and jazz with an all-ages Nanaimo crowd. The band starts its cross-country tour in support of its new album No Kata on Vancouver Island, performing in Nanaimo Saturday (Aug. 21) at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 256 on East Wel-
lington Road with The Perfect Trend and Synapse. “The No Kata EP is a real game changer for us,” said guitarist Joel Parent. “Stylistically it stretches the boundaries of our genre-mashing moniker, incorporating some of the most outlandish sounds we’ve ever thought up or accidentally stumbled upon in a creative
process.” The new album is complemented with a graphic novel due out at the same time. Two of the other bands on the bill are also promoting new albums at the show. The Perfect Trend, a Nanaimo band, recently completed a new album called In Severance as well
and is continuing its extensive touring schedule this summer and fall. Synapse, a Victoria band, is also celebrating the release of an album. The concert doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets $12 at the door. For more information, please visit www.ninjaspy.net.

NANAIMO WINS home opener by 60-7 score. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The V.I. Raiders were explosive on offence and dominant on defence. They flattened another opponent. And they don’t think they played anywhere near their capabilities. The Raiders won their home opener against the Kamloops Broncos 60-7 on Saturday at Caledonia Park. “I didn’t like the way we played, regardless of the score,” said Matthew “Snoop” Blokker, Raiders coach. “We have to play a certain way and we have to establish a mentality and we have to be sharp.” The V.I. team felt it was a little off its game in the first half, caught up in the excitement of the home opener. “We were a little fired up and we just needed to relax…” said Jordan Yantz, Raiders quarterback. “When we go out there and we just play football and have fun doing it, that’s when we play our best. I thought we were just trying way too hard in the first half.” So even though the Raiders were up 22-0 at halftime, Yantz said they “got a little bit of a strip torn out of us” in the locker room by the coaching staff. A third-quarter interception by V.I. linebacker Glenn Boyce on his own five-yard line was a momentum changer, as

the offence drove the ball the rest of the way down the field and Jordan Botel capped the drive with a one-yard rushing TD. Broncos running back Mike McMaster
gave credit to the “wellrounded” Raiders, his former team, but said his Broncos didn’t bring their best on Saturday. “We had a long bus ride, got off the bus and tried
to play a game,” McMaster said. “Different terms, we’d probably do a little bit better.” The Raiders got off to a 14-0 lead through one quarter as Yantz scored
two rushing majors. After the Broncos surrendered a safety to start the second quarter, Raiders receiver Dustin Pedersen was left wide open on the far sideline and scored a 25-yard catch-and-run TD. After Botel’s major extended the lead in the third quarter, the Broncos started the fourth quarter with a TD catch. But the Raiders dominated from there, outscoring the Broncos 31-1 the rest of the way. Whitman Tomusiak made a 20-yard touchdown catch, then fullback Ashton Galloway used a mix of power running and speed to score a 57-yard TD. Yantz stayed in the game in pursuit of a B.C. Football Conference record (see related story) and got the record-setting TD on a 26-yard pass to Tomusiak. A blocked kick by Erling Skuggedal set up a short touchdown run by Taylor Flavel and then James Riley’s second fumble recovery of the quarter set up a 19-yard field goal by Mark Mueller. Yantz finished the game 17-of-33 for 316 yards, while Botel was the game’s leading rusher with 16 carries for 112 yards. Mike Schaper had four catches for 96 yards and Pedersen had five catches for 81 yards. Ranji Atwall had eight tackles and a forced fumble. Adam Laurensse had five tackles and three knockdowns and Boyce had a sack and a forced fumble to go with his INT. GAME ON … The Raiders play the Chilliwack Huskers on Sunday (Aug. 21) in the Fraser Valley. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Quarterback sets conference’s all-time touchdowns record The V.I. Raiders wouldn’t usually keep their star quarterback in the game late in the fourth quarter of a blowout. But Saturday was a special day. Jordan Yantz set the B.C. Football Conference record for career touchdown passes when he threw his third TD pass of the game against the Kamloops Broncos at Caledonia Park. “It was in the back of my head a little bit,” Yantz said. “I kind of wish it wasn’t, so it would take a lit-
tle bit of pressure off. It’s definitely a great accomplishment that I can always have.” Yantz now has 63 touchdown passes, one more than Shawn Olson, who played with the Surrey Rams 1992-95, and Nate Cote, a Victoria Rebels star from 2005-07. Raiders coach Matthew “Snoop” Blokker said the team wanted to get Yantz the record so it wouldn’t be a distraction moving forward. “To get it here at home is awesome and congratulations to him and all
our receivers for going out and making plays for him,” Blokker said. Yantz is in his fourth season of junior football and only his third season as starting quarterback. “He’s only got 17 games of junior football left, so let’s see what the record is when he’s done,” Blokker said. GRID BITS … Yantz also holds BCFC records for most pass completions in a game (29), completion percentage over one season (64.1) and completions in one season (182).

Rollers beaten in charity game
Nanaimo’s top roller derby team got in an offseason tune-up with a charity bout in Victoria. The Harbour City Rollers were defeated 177-77 by the Belles of the Brawl, an Eves of Destruction house team, on Saturday in Esquimalt. The B.C. Roller Derby Association interleague game was a fundraiser for Victoria’s Women’s Sexual Assault Centre.

Soccer friendly gets cancelled Vancouver Island University’s women’s soccer team is raring to go, but the opposition just isn’t ready. Warner Pacific University, slated to face the Mariners this Thursday (Aug. 18), cancelled due to player eligibility issues with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. “We were looking forward to playing a top NAIA team in preparation for our season,” said Anup Kang, VIU coach, in a press release. “We will play local boys’ rep teams instead.” The friendly with Warner Pacific may be rescheduled for this coming spring. The VIU women will take on Peninsula College on Monday (Aug. 22) at 5 p.m. at Mariner Field.

This trade won’t be a popular one, at least not right now. The Nanaimo Clippers traded Myles, Gerry and Leo Fitzgerald – their Most Popular Player award winners – to the Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday in a seven-player blockbuster deal. The Fitzgerald forwards and defenceman Jesse Ursic were dealt to the Sprucies in exchange for forward Trevor Fitzgerald and defencemen Josh Bryan and Scott Milnthorp. Mike Vandekamp, Clippers general manager, said the triplets’ popularity made the trade more difficult. “That was probably the No. 1 thing that was thought about, actually…” Vandekamp said. “Sometimes you have to separate the hockey side from the marketing side and try to find a happy medium. Hopefully we’ll have the type of team that fans will be excited about again this year.” Prince George, he said, maintained that it wanted the triplets as a package deal, while Vandekamp badly wanted Trevor Fitzgerald. “He’s a 200-foot player, he plays all areas of the rink,” said the GM of his new centre. Trevor Fitzgerald played last season with the Vernon Vipers,

The 18-year-old from Vernon is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. The Clippers think their new Fitzgerald can recapture the offensive form he showed in junior B, when he scored 67 points in 49 games. “We believe he will be able to do that,” Vandekamp said. “We think we’re going to get some real good quality minutes from him in a two-way capacity and I know he’s a quality, character kid.”
Bryan is also a highly regarded pickup. The 18-year-old from Sidney is 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and played last season with the Victoria Grizzlies. He was chosen the team’s Rookie of the Year after playing 43 games. “He’s excited to be joining our club and we’re excited to have him joining us,” said the GM. Milnthorp, a 19-year-old from Calgary, played for Vandekamp last year with the Grande Prairie Storm. The 5-foot-11, 185pounder had three goals, three assists and 41 PIM in 45 games. “He’s got a lot of upside to be a very good offensive defenceman,” Vandekamp said. Myles, Gerry and Leo Fitzgerald and Ursic are all 17 years old. Gerry played all 60 games last season, scoring eight goals and 27 points and accumulating 38 penalty minutes. Myles also played 60 games, scoring 10 goals and 21 points. Leo played 52 games and had seven goals and 19 points. Ursic played 42 games, scoring three goals.

BALL STATE wins 101-67 versus VIU.
servicemanager@sherwoodmarine.com
Bigger, better Ball State beat VIU, but in the pre-season there aren’t really any winners and losers. Both the Ball State Cardinals and the Vancouver Island University Mariners used Sunday’s exhibition at the VIU gym to try to get better. The touring NCAA Div. 1 team from Indiana defeated the M’s 101-67. “It’s tough because they’re bigger, stronger and more athletic and we’re just playing; we haven’t really practised or anything,” said Tony Bryce, VIU coach. “When you get a team that’s that big and talented and they’re running stuff, it’s not easy to stop.” B.C. colle ge basketball’s defending champions competed gamely, trailing by only 11 points at halftime. But the Cards came out after the break and went on a 20-3 run. Clayton Billett, VIU guard, said his team did well considering it hasn’t practised sets
and schemes. Mostly the Mariners appreciated the experience. “To play against better players always helps,” Billett said. The Cardinals said despite the lopsided score, the Mariners provided a challenge. “They were really well coached, played real well and very disciplined,” said Randy Davis, Ball State point guard. “It really helps us because we know the teams that we’re going to be playing are disciplined, just like this team.” The game capped an undefeated trip for the Cardinals. They also beat the Quest Kermodes 101-61, defeated Trinity Western 114-71 and edged the Victoria Selects all-stars 88-82. Ball state guard Jauwan Scaife said his team built chemistry on the trip, and also enjoyed seeing B.C. “ I t ’s b e a u t i f u l , ” Scaife said. “Coming here was really nice, being able to experience everything and meet new people. It was just a really good trip overall.” Scaife was top scorer in Sunday’s game with 21 points. Brandon Jones led VIU with 16 points and Jacob Thom scored 15. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
