Layton remembered as optimistic, determined BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
The federal New Democratic Party has lost its leader. Jack Layton, leader of Canada’s Official Opposition, died early Monday at
his home surrounded by family and friends after losing his battle with cancer. He was 61. Nanaimo-Cowichan NDP Jean Crowder said Monday morning she was just coming to terms with the news. Crowder was first elected in her rid-
ing in 2004, the same year Layton won his first seat in the House of Commons as leader of the NDP. Layton had won the leadership of the party in January 2003 on the first ballot at the leadership convention. ◆ See ‘MP SHELL-SHOCKED’ /6

Many tourism operators saw a sluggish start to the season, but sunny August skies brought an increase in visitors. Mark Drysdale, executive director of Tourism Nanaimo, said it’s been slow at visitor information locations this year. The Beban Park location had 6,096 visitors to the end of July, compared to 7,460 the same time last year. The Vancouver Island Conference Centre kiosk had 3,998 visits compared to 4,710 in 2010. Overall, tourism numbers have steadily dropped for the past three years, said Drysdale. Tourism peaked in 2008 after climbing steadily for five years. Weather could be a factor because visits increased in August, but it’s hard to track its influence, said Drysdale. He said Canada’s rising dollar is more likely to blame than cloudy skies. “It’s the parity of the American dollar that is really slamming us,” he said. The popular outdoor tourist destination, Wild Play Element Parks, also saw low numbers in this spring and in early summer. Jennifer Doyle, Wild Play manager, said with the August sunshine, visits started climbing again and the Nanaimo attraction is on track to be on par with numbers from last August. “With the sunshine we have lots of families travelling looking to do more active things,” said Doyle. ◆ See ‘DOWNTOWN’ /6

Limits on benefits from new program draw veterans’ fire
crime
Mounties bust gang member Nanaimo Mounties nabbed a member of the Dahk gang along with two other suspects on the weekend. The arrests happened after police stopped a grey 2008 Acura travelling southbound on the Island Highway near Victoria Road at about 12:30 p.m. Officers got to the car and noticed “an overwhelming odour” of marijuana, so they arrested all three occupants, said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. Police towed the car to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment to do a thorough search of the vehicle, which turned up 27.5 grams of crack cocaine, 7.5 grams of marijuana, 108 pills suspected of being ecstasy, a radio jamming device, scales and $1,700 in cash. Jujhar Khun-Khun, 24, Irran Khan, 20, and Anees Mohammed, 19, all from the Lower Mainland, were held in custody and appeared before a Nanaimo provincial court judge on the weekend when they were charged with trafficking. All three men were also charged with breaching the conditions of their release from previous trafficking charges. They appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Monday. O’Brien said KhunKhun is a known member of the Dhak gang based in the Lower Mainland. Police do not know specifically why the three men were in Nanaimo. “The big thing is, this is a presence we haven’t seen before,” O’Brien said.

Limiting benefits of a new federal program for veterans to personnel who served in Afghanistan is drawing criticism. The Canadian Forces Legacy of Care Program is a five-year, $52.5-million initiative launched in 2010 to help seriously injured and ill combatants and their families. The program includes: barrier-free transitional accommodation; support services while in transitional accommodation; the Canadian Forces attendant care benefit; Canadian Forces spousal education upgrade program; and enhanced case management support for seriously ill and injured Canadian Forces members. The Royal Canadian Legion wants all elements of the program broadened to include members serving in all theatres of operations, rather than just Afghanistan. Re t i re d c ap t a i n T revor Greene of Nanaimo served in Afghanistan in 2006 and suffered severe brain trauma when struck by an axe while in a village in Kandahar. Greene said a veteran is a veteran, regardless of the conflict. “They face the same dangers and make the same sacrifices,” he said. “I think it’s a mistake to single out the Afghan vets.” Dave Munro, Royal Canadian Legion South/Mid Vancouver Island zone commander, said the legion

apt. Trevor Greene will become a familiar face in the Royal Roads University school of peace and conflict management, where he became an honorary member earlier this month. The Nanaimo-based army veteran suffered a massive brain injury on March 4, 2006, after a 16-year-old Afghan teen put an axe into his skull during what was meant to be a peaceful meeting with elders in a village in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The teen was gunned down within moments, but Greene can’t help but wonder if the ordeal might have been avoided if the boy had been given an education. “The boy who attacked me had no education and no hope,” said Greene, 46, speaking in the soft, determined voice he regained through speech therapy. “The Taliban had him convinced that killing an infidel would get him into heaven.” Greene and his wife, Debbie, are establishing a foundation to send Afghan children to school.

“Early intervention is most important,” he said. Alex Morrison, director of the school of peace and conflict management, called Greene an inspiration. “We study conflict analysis, and here’s a fellow who’s experienced conflict in the most extreme sense,” he said. “We want to recognize him for what he did and what he suffered.” It’s the first time the school has recognized an honorary member. The designation means Greene will be invited to school functions, such as welcoming dinners for new students and the end-of-term garden party. He was also formally welcomed and given a chance to speak to the school’s students and faculty earlier this week. “I feel honoured,” Greene said. “It gives me a warm feeling becoming a part of this school.” Greene’s rehabilitation is slow and ongoing as he works towards his goal to walk again. He is the subject of a 2008 CTV-produced documentary Peace Warrior, and he’s writing a book about his experience that will be published next year.

initially backed the program, assuming that it covered all veterans. “We were quite surprised to find it only covers the Afghan veterans,” he said. “We have our airborne guys up in the north and other troops get called out to events like the Winnipeg floods. “If they get injured or killed doing that, then we depend on the government to make sure the injured parties and their families are covered and looked after.” Munro met with Veterans Affairs officials in Victoria to express the legion’s concerns and similar meetings took place in Ottawa. “I know our command service officer and president are in constant meetings to try and get this solved,” he said. Pierre Allard, service bureau director at the Royal Canadian Le gion’s Dominion Command in Ottawa, said the legion is awaiting replies to letters sent to Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and JeanP i e r re B l a ck bu r n , Minister of Veterans Affairs, as well as the Canadian Forces and Veteran Affairs. Allard said the legion has full respect for those who have served in a very difficult theatre like Afghanistan. “But we’re currently engaged in military operations of f the Libyan coast with warships and aircraft,” he said. “Does that mean that service to Canada has a different value than service in Afghanistan?” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Pollution stalls mall reno BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
Remnants from a former laundromat have delayed work at Port Place Shopping Centre while property owners clean up contaminated soil. The work drew public attention earlier this month when workers in white Tyvek suits were seen drilling into the soil and pumping in large quantities of hydrogen peroxide solution into the drill sites. “It was a bit of a surprise to discover we had dry cleaning solvents in the soil there because we had no indication when we did our environmental investigations when we purchased the property that a dry cleaner operated there,” said Ralph Huizinga, First Capital Realty vice-president of acquisitions and development. “Our consultants couldn’t find any evidence of that through business registries or anecdotal information.” Huizinga said the dry cleaning solvents were discovered in the soil when the company conducted additional environmental investigations.

Workers with PHH ARC Environmental drill an injection hole, front, as a third worker hooks up a tank of hydrogen peroxide solution to an injector pump. The company injected the solution into the ground under Port Place Shopping Centre to neutralize dry cleaning fluid contamination left behind by a business that was a former tenant of the mall.
Perchlorethylene, one of the most commonly used dry cleaning solvents, has been linked to cancers and is environmentally harmful. Because the pollution plume in the soil is close to the building’s foundations, removing all of the contaminated soil is not an option. In such cases, a solution of five-per cent strength hydro gen peroxide, which neutralizes dry cleaning residue, is injected
into the ground. “What the hydrogen peroxide does is break down or oxidize the dry cleaning solvents in the soil,” Huizinga said. “We had to address it and it set us back a couple of months and a few hundred thousand dollars.” The injection process ended early last week and crews will survey the effectiveness of the work in October. “ We ’ re g o i n g t o re-sample and our

Ferry advisory seeks new members BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
With the three-year term almost complete for current Ferry Advisory Committee members, B.C. Ferries will be taking nominations this fall for a new group of representatives. The current 12-member committee represents island communities dependent on minor-route ferry services and is appointed in cooperation with local governments, Islands Trust and First Nations. The communities of Brentwood Bay and Mill Bay have asked that their route also be represented, so a 13th seat will be added to the committee in January. Darin Guenette, B.C. Ferries spokesman, said current members are welcome to reapply but won’t automatically be reappointed. “We tie these terms to the municipal election cycle. The idea is that these committees have a cross section of representation from within

the communities that we’re serving,” said Guenette. Members are volunteers, but B.C. Ferries covers expenses incurred by committee functions. The committee was established in 1993 to discuss day-to-day operations, planned changes and policy issues with B.C. Ferries. Formal meetings, which take place twice a year, enable the corporation to better understand the needs of communities at a grass roots level and adjust services to accommodate those needs. “We use the representatives to gauge what’s going on in the community and what the pulse of the people is,” Guenette said. “It’s a twoway communication platform.” B.C. Ferries will put a call out for nominations in September and October and appointments will be approved in December. The committee will likely resume sometime in January and serve until December 2014. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Downtown busier with summer events ◆ From /1 Tourist trips on the Nanaimo Harbour Ferry are also down. Barry Hobbis, vice-president of operations for the ferry, said business was down in spring and in June, but local ridership increased. Group tours and wedding ferry bookings decreased significantly this year – group tours fell 50 per cent and wedding bookings were down 45 per cent. “It’s huge – absolutely huge,” said Hobbis. However, the Nanaimo Museum and the Dorchester Hotel have seen increased numbers so far this year. The museum had more visits so far than last year’s total visits. This year, 37,658 people visited the museum up to the end of July compared to last year’s total of 34,295. Yet the majority of visitors are local. Out of this year’s total, 3,000 were from out of town compared to 2,300 last year. The visitor numbers include museum programs, admissions to the museum and Bastion and noon cannon firing attendance. Bobbi Williamson, museum program coordinator, said visits increased due to many factors. The Bastion wasn’t open last year while it underwent renovations and that “had a major impact” on visitor numbers, Williamson said. There were also two street fairs this year that brought a lot of foot traffic into the museum. Paul Tilroe, general manager of the Best Western Dorchester Hotel, said this season is looking better than last. Occupancy in June and July was up about 10 per cent and August is on par with last year. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com
Disaster averted Firefighter Jason Bradley, left, got a house call from co-workers Friday after a fire broke out in his fifth wheel travel trailer on Sandra Road. The fire’s cause is undetermined, but might have been triggered by a malfunction in the trailer’s electrical system. Upholstery was burned and the interior was heavily smoke damaged. The trailer was about to be taken out on a family vacation. CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN
MP ‘shell-shocked’ by leader’s death ◆ From /1 “We’ re all shellshocked,” said Crowder. “We knew he was sick, but because he is such a fighter we all had hope for his recovery. It just wasn’t meant to be. He was such a fighter and he worked so hard to get to where he was and it just felt like there should be some justice
but we all know life just doesn’t work out like that.” Crowder said notes of sympathy were ar riving from all points of the country into her constituency office. J a m e s L u n n e y, Nanaimo-Alberni Conservative MP, said Layton’s ability to communicate and his personable demeanor made him a likable person despite a difference in political philosophies. “Sixty-one is too young for anybody to die,” said Lunney. “We knew it didn’t look good for him and it was amazing the energy he had during the last election campaign. But I will say this, Jack was passionate about his
politics, he was an effective communicator, he motivated a lot of Canadians, played an important role in the political discourse of our nation, and for all of these reasons he will be missed.” Lunney said he often chatted with Layton during flights and within the House of Commons. “Jack struck a chord with a lot of Canadians. We may have disagreed with a lot of the message, but he was passionate. Even though we as a party had differences with Jack on philosophical aspects and approach to various issues, I always respected Jack as a human being and as a committed and passionate person,”
he said. Leonard Krog, Nanaimo NDP MLA, said he backed Layton during the 2003 NDP leadership convention because he recognized Layton’s energy and believed he had the ability to take the party to the next level. “He came to Nanaimo a few times over the years and I felt looking at his background and energy that this was a guy who could take the party some distance and he did,” Krog said. “He has achieved what politicians going back to the days of J.S. Woodsworth have tried to achieve and that is to make the NCCS/ NDP a truly national party and into a position where it could become government. The first step in that is to become the Official Opposition and Jack achieved that.” When Layton inher-
ited the federal NDP in 2003, the party had 13 seats in the House of Commons. After the last federal election in May, primarily because of strong campaigning in Quebec, the party achieved 103 seats to become the country’s Official Opposition for the first time in its history. “T he awful par t of this is for him to have worked so hard and come so far and achieve so much. But the one thing I’ve learned is that life is not fair,” said Krog. Crowder served as deputy caucus whip and caucus chairwoman when the party was small, allowing her to get to know Layton well in her early days as an MP. “Most of us who ran, ran because of Jack. I ran because of Jack,” said Crowder. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

One man is in custody for extortion and assault after allegedly beating another man over an unpaid drug debt in Nanaimo. The incident began shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday when the victim, 23, was confronted about an unpaid debt. The victim was forced to sign over ownership of his truck, but after signing was prevented from leaving the residence and was allegedly kicked, punched, whipped with a rubber hose and threatened that his legs would be broken. Police, acting on a tip from the public, found the victim shortly before 7 p.m. at a residence in the 400 block of Third Street. Officers removed him and searched the home, but failing to find the suspect, continued searching until they arrested him at another Third Street residence around 11:30 p.m. Alan John Jackson, 25, appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Friday on charges of extortion and assault. The victim suffered severe bruising to his face, arms and legs, but did not require hospitalization. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said the amount of money owed was only in the range of a couple hundred dollars. “The drug culture fosters an environment of violence where this type of intimidation is not uncommon when debts are not paid,” said O’Brien. “The victim is lucky he did not sustain more serious injuries than he did.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Forces return to royal roots As the home of Canada’s Pacific Fleet, Islanders should be happy we can officially call the Royal Canadian Navy just that. Last week, the federal government announced it had given up on a decadesold decision and would restore the traditional names of the three distinct elements within the Canadian Forces. The public never did get entirely comfortable with what seemed like artificial terms for our army, navy and air force. The Maritime Command, Land Force Command and Air Command always seemed too officious and in need of explanation. And while we can’t simply throw the last 43 years of our military’s history out the window, those who serve in our armed forces are also keenly aware of the traditions that have been in place long before unification in 1968. There were many unofficial theories given for the original decision to strip the term “royal” from the navy and air force and to move to a single uniform for all military branches. Whether the thinking was to save money or to step away from the shadow of our British heritage, the move never really worked and many dedicated individuals fought the long fight to have the “royal” restored. In 2011, we’ve long gotten over any insecurity about being seen as a colony of the old Empire. The reality is our country’s roots as a constitutional monarchy go back almost 500 years, to when the King of France first claimed possession of what is now Canada. The concept of the Crown is so interwoven in the fabric of this country that only a full-scale revolution could hope to undo the monarchy’s place in our laws and culture. We are a royal nation and it’s good to know that once again, our region is home to the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force. I’m not sure how much that is going to help but at least it’s something. Before I take my vacation, I’m going to examine ways I can cut costs without sacrificing too much fun. Urban gardening issue framed in wrong context To the Editor, The matter of Compassion Farm has been framed as Dirk Becker against the District of Lantzville. It is crucial that this issue be properly reframed. Dirk Becker and Nicole Shaw are fighting for us all. They are on the front line, paying with their physical and emotional well-being so that each member of our society – from those who purchase their beautiful wholesome food at the weekly Bowen Road Farmers Market in Nanaimo, to their neighbour Jim Brash and Mayor Haime – can continue to feed ourselves now and in our potentially turbulent future. Becker has for the past 10 years taken a stand for what we all need to stand for, for the very essence of what allows us to stand up and function – the ability to nourish our bodies. This is not a quaint topic, not an issue of hipsters and yuppies buying trendy foods at expensive grocery stores. This is about our ever decreasing ability to control the quality and quantity of foods that we put into our bodies, and into the mouths of our children. He is a leader and an example of what we can do, what we should do. He is growing food, mountains of incredible food on the most beautiful and biologically diverse piece of property I have seen. Yes, they have been in violation of district bylaws, but these are bylaws that need to be changed. Their fight is parallel to those of the bright visionaries of our past – visionaries such as Rosa Parks, whose act of civil disobedience in refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white passenger in 1955 made her an international icon of resistance to racial segregation. If it were not for brave and bold, idealistic individuals such
as Rosa Parks, Dirk Becker and Nicole Shaw our society would fail to progress. But they cannot take on this struggle alone, nor should they have to. This is not their fight. This is the fight for every one of us who wants to ensure our current and future food supply. It has been said that it takes less energy to condemn that it does to think. We all need to take some time to recognize that the current bylaws are no longer serving us and it is time they be changed. We need to encourage real thought, deep awareness of the very bleak reality of our current food supply. It is easy to feel insulated from the global food crisis as we continue to walk into our local grocery stores and see the shelves constantly stocked with goods. We need to see that what increasingly lines those shelves and aisles is not food, but products. Manufactured goods being packaged up and sold to us as nourishment. Our food choices are more and more being dictated not by seasons and regions, but by a corporation’s bottom line. Martin Luther King famously stated that, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Some of you may not know Dirk and Nicole, but trust me, they are friends. They work tirelessly not just for those members of the community who may benefit from consuming their wholesome produce, but for every person in every community who is faced with an insecure food supply. And that is every one of us. This is not an issue we can remain silent on. I am sorry it took me so long to add my own voice. Wrenna Robertson Nanaimo

Activists’ priorities just right To the Editor, Re: Animal activists must reexamine priorities, Letters, Aug. 20. If Ruth Bard informed herself of just a few of the countless missions animal activists and the Sea Shepard are involved with, she might have an appreciation for the dedicated commitment of so few. A commitment to not only protect dolphins, their mission is about the protection of our oceans which are being destroyed by human greed. Ever heard of shark finning? The list goes on. We depend on the health of our oceans for survival.
These activists put their efforts, personal savings, job security and (many times) their personal safety at risk to support their principles. They are not paid for their dedication. They act on their principles. How contrary this commitment is compared to pious individuals, whose actions are limited to negative, uninformed letters to the editor. The desire to better our world is addressed on many fronts of which humane treatment and preservation of animals is but one. Other important fronts such as stopping child slavery, encouraging tolerance, educating the
illiterate and providing aid to desperately needed areas, such as the Horn of Africa, are also in need of committed volunteers and resources. However, we can only serve one master at a time. Bard’s suggestion that the environmentalists do not care for the welfare of their fellow man is unfounded. Perhaps this untrue presumption, may motivate the writer to board the next flight to the Horn of Africa (on her own dime and at considerable personal risk) and put action to her hollow words. Now, who really needs to “re-examine priorities”? Shirley Lee Nanaimo
No shortage of school funding in B.C. To the Editor, A comparison of School District 68 (Nanaimo) and School District 73 (Kamloops/ Thompson) shows that taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted big time in the Nanaimo school district. Nanaimo has 14,674 students and Kamloops has 17,571 students. Nanaimo’s average teacher wage is $70,812 compared to $70,511 for Kamloops. The district superintendent for Nanaimo received a compensation package of $180,773 (base salary, pension benefits, and other expenses) compared to Kamloops/Thompson of $201,218. Nine weeks vacation for the Nanaimo superintendent and seven weeks vacation for the Kamloops/Thompson superintendent. Nanaimo has nine trustees at yearly wages of $141,617 to Kamloops/Thompson nine trustees at yearly wages of $167,744. Nanaimo has 752 teachers/63 principals/vice-principals, to Kamloops/Thompson 775 teachers/68 principals/

vice-principals. The average wage of principals is $102,034 in Nanaimo to $102,686 in Kamloops/Thompson. Total district wages for a year is $95,779,695 in Nanaimo to $96,316,065 in Kamloops/ Thompson. Total office supplies and stationery purchases for Nanaimo
was $351,583 and $255,592 for Kamloops/Thompson. If you look at these figures, note that Kamloops/Thompson has 2,897 more students with only 23 more teachers than Nanaimo, which on average is one teacher sharing 125 more students. The average teacher wage in Kamloops/Thompson is lower, a much lower purchase of office supplies and stationery, and payroll difference of only $536,370 with more students and teachers which in comparison shows that the Nanaimo school board is out of control with the taxpayer dollars. In summary, the average Nanaimo teacher wage is also higher than Delta, Richmond, Burnaby, and Surrey. All B.C. school district financial information available online at www.kto12.ca. There is no shortage of school funds in the school districts in B.C. It is careless management of the local school boards. One big joke. Joe Sawchuk Duncan

Bicyclists improve visibility Bicycling is a great mode of transportation. Not only is it part of a healthy lifestyle, but cycling also contributes to a greener environment. But bicyclists have a greater risk of potential injury or death should they become involved in a collision. According to Transport Canada, in 2009 there were 41 bicyclist fatalities, and 435 serious injuries. Ways bicyclists can improve their safety include: Pay attention – Avoid distractions from cellphones and
music players. Follow the law – Bicyclists have the same rights and duties as other drivers and need to follow the same traffic laws. Be predictable – ride in a straight line, don’t swerve over sewers or bumps in the road, signal all turns, come to a complete stop at every stop sign and red light, and position yourself in the field of vision of a motorist pulling out of a parking space. Be conspicuous – ride where

drivers can see you, use lights at night and wear bright clothing. Be aware – anticipate the next move of drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists. Watch for debris, potholes and grates. Ride ready – tires need air, brakes must work, chains should run smoothly and quick release wheel levers must be closed. Carry identification and cellphone, emergency cash, as well as repair and emergency supplies.

Every day in British Columbia, individuals and organizations work tirelessly to protect the public by making our communities a safer place to work, live and play. The seventh annual Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Public Safety seeks nominations to honour British Columbians for their outstanding contributions to public safety. These can be an individual, organization or a group of people in the community. The annual awards program is presented by the B.C. Safety Authority. Online nomination forms are at http://safetyauthority.ca/form. “At the B.C. Safety Authority, we believe that reducing or eliminating risk is everyone’s responsibility, said Catherine Roome, authority president and CEO. “But some people and organizations lead by example through their dedication to the pursuit of safety excellence. These are the ‘safety superheroes’ that we want to celebrate and recognize through this awards program. The three award categories include: lifetime achievement; exceptional contribution to public safety – individual; and exceptional contribution to public safety – organization. Nominations close Sept. 12. This year’s awards will be presented at a luncheon on Nov. 16 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Steve Smith tours Canada – on a hopefully much sturdier contraption than this bike – as Red Green Live. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
Experience the difference that Quality makes!
Greetings from
Possum Lodge
Steve Smith gives new life to the character Red Green during theatre tour BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN
F
or years, he was a staple on Canadian television, sharing stories from the fishing lodge and telling tales with famous guests. Red Fisher’s show became iconic, paving the way for nostalgia, imitation and, of course, parody. “He thought nothing would
bore you,” said Steve Smith. Smith and his wife produced a sketch series called Smith and Smith and remembered Sunday afternoons watching Fisher’s show. “Why don’t I make fun of this guy?” Smith said. That initial sketch comedy routine eventually spawned its own Canadian hit television series: Red Green. Smith brings a stage version to the Port The-
atre Sept. 10. When Smith and Smith ended and another television show opportunity was presented, the popularity of the Red Green sketch came to mind. The challenge was to expand a sketch into a full show. “We had to expand to get some content,” Smith said. “It was still based on making fun of this guy.” Enter Possum Lodge, where
Red Green and his buddies would answer mail from viewers and offer life advice. Handyman Corner would see Red attempt inventions out of everyday items, like creating a jet pack from two propane tanks or a carnival ride by attaching bar stools to a washing machine agitator. He usually ended the segment with the sage advice: if women don’t find you handsome, they
should at least find you handy. The show spawned dozens of cultural references, most notably the million and one uses for duct tape. “Duct tape is kind of a natural extension from men,” Smith said. As he explains it, he could weld a project all day, or he could spend five minutes duct taping it together. ◆ See ‘RED’ /22

The group, which came together in 1979, wrote dozens of tunes in its first three years. The group plays those songs Thursday (Aug. 25), 8:30 p.m., at the Queen’s. Uncle Wiggly appeared on Victoria’s fledgling indie scene and was the first group to independently release a vinyl single of two original sides – neither was labeled an

◆ From /21 And he’d rather spend five minutes every week than eight hours in one day. “That’s the way we are,” he said. The show still airs in reruns on television in Canada and the U.S. The comedy seems to transfer to different countries unlike other made-in-Canada series. “We are the longest running Canadian show in America,” Smith said. Mainstream comedy is rife with people being mean to others for a laugh – something that Smith is glad Red Green was never part of. Smith watched the golden era of television, where the goal was to make people happy for a short time each day. “That’s the kind of comedy that stuck with me,” he said. Despite Red Green’s continuing popularity, Smith has no plans to revive the show. While the stage show borrows from the TV series – Smith still gives advice on how to get along with the wife and the history of Possum Lodge – people expecting an episode of Red Green will be disappointed. “If you want to see The Red Green Show, stay home – save your money, buy a six-pack and a bag of chips and watch it on TV,” Smith said. Smith performs Red Green Live at the Port Theatre Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets $55.50. Please call 250-7548550 or visit www. porttheatre.com.

Timbermen captain named MVP SCOTT RANGER gets credit for 54goal season.
I
Distracted V.I. Raiders still win big BY GREG SAKAKI
BY GREG SAKAKI
THE NEWS BULLETIN
THE NEWS BULLETIN
Scott Ranger was on his way to a family barbecue when he talked to the News Bulletin on Sunday. The season ended three weeks ago. But he had his lacrosse stick with him. “It doesn’t leave my side very often,” he said. “The stick’s kind of attached to me and that’s just the way I have been since I was four or five years old.” All those years shooting the ball around with his brother or his dad or just into an empty net helped Ranger become the lacrosse player he is today: league MVP. The born-and-raised Nanaimoite received news last week that he is the 2011 winner of the Western Lacrosse Association’s Commission Trophy as most valuable player. It’s an historic award given out annually since 1958. Some of the names etched on the trophy include Jack Bionda, Jim Veltman, Chris Gill and Lewis Ratcliff. The last Nanaimo Timbermen player to win MVP was Brian Evans in 1978. “It’s an honour to have,” said Ranger. “It goes with a lot of hard work from myself and definitely my teammates – it’s one of those things that you can’t win by yourself.” Ranger joins the exclusive group of MVPs after a season for the ages. The Timbermen team captain played in all 18 games and went hard to the net in every one, finishing with 54 goals and 41 assists. The 28-year-old right hander has scored 260 career WLA goals, so he didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. In fact, he said there’s nothing about his game that really changed in 2011. “It’s just being focused and

ready to play and really wanting to succeed – I want to see this team go places,” Ranger said. “I really try not to pay attention to stats. I just try to contribute the best way I can and I’m there to score goals. If I’m doing that, I’m doing my job.” A 54-goal season is a rarity in the WLA – over the last 10 years, the only other player to light the lamp that many times in one summer was Ratcliff in 2006.
But Ranger said he can’t fully appreciate the season he had, at least not right now. The fact that the Timbermen missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker still stings. “I’m a passionate guy about lacrosse and I’m still sitting with a sour taste in my mouth,” he said. “As soon as the playoffs are done I’ll definitely sit back and enjoy it a little bit more.” His main concern, though, will continue to be team
success. Ranger was the Timbermen franchise’s firstround draft choice in 2005 so he’s seen the entire process of trying to build a winning team. “With the guys we have and the ownership and the organization, we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. “It might not have been a huge step from last year, but baby steps are going to lead to good things.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Lacrosse team hands out hardware after competitive season The senior A Nanaimo Timbermen were optimistic after the 2011 Western Lacrosse Association season amid the disappointment of missing the playoffs.
The main reason for optimism is the core of players to build with. The team announced its year-end award winners last week. Team captain Scott
Ranger was named team MVP. He also won the Mac Maude Memorial Trophy as the three-star player of the year and shares the Keith Westwood
Memorial Most Inspirational Player award with Cayle Ratcliff. Rob Kirkby won the Best Defensive Player award, Myles Kenny won Most Improved Player and
Jordon Sealock won Rookie of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike Player. Mat MacLeod won the Keith Manns Memorial Unsung Hero Award.
The V.I. Raiders have their sights set on bigger things than this past weekend’s road win over the Chilliwack Huskers. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League team was able to handle the Huskers 52-3 on Sunday in the Fraser Valley despite being totally distracted by a game this Saturday (Aug. 27) against Kelowna. “We looked ahead completely to playing the Okanagan Sun … Why [would] you pretend? We didn’t,” said Matthew “Snoop” Blokker, Raiders coach. Instead, the Raiders spent almost their entire practice week preparing for the Sun. On Friday, the shortest practice of the week, they shifted focus to the Huskers. It was enough. “We got some good work in today and I think that was important,” Blokker said after Sunday’s win. The Huskers came out ready to play and limited the score in the first half to 18-3. But the Raiders kept pounding away. The V.I. team almost treated the game like a practice at times, working on its no-huddle offence and gambling on some thirddown plays. “We really played some good situational football,” said the coach. “We were hoping to get certain situations and regardless, we were able to practise some things that we wanted to work on.” Quarterback Jordan Yantz was player of the game, throwing for three touchdowns and running in two short majors. Leagueleading receiver Andrew Smith had another huge game with 137 yards and two TD catches, the first of which was a 60-yard catchand-run play where he eluded tacklers with his footwork. Dustin Pedersen scored the game’s first touchdown on a quick-strike red-zone play late in the first quarter and Mike Schaper had Nanaimo’s other major, a 16-yard catch early in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Dylan Chapdelaine was a standout with a sack, five tackles and a highlight-reel runstuffing hit late in the game. Ranji Atwall, Nick Woznesensky, Evan Foster and Erling Skuggedal also had sacks. GAME ON … The Raiders play the Sun on Saturday (Aug. 27) at 4 p.m. at Caledonia Park. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Peewee all-star team tunes up for Westerns

Field lacrosse needs players The Nanaimo Junior Varsity Raiders field lacrosse club still needs some more local talent to build its teams. The association is still accepting registrations in all age divisions, but is especially in need of players in the U8-U14 categories. Registration forms are available at ReAction Source for Sports. E-mail c7067@telus.net to learn more.
The Nanaimo Pirates peewee AAA allstars will go into the Western Canadian championships playing some solid ball. The team made it to the semifinals at provincials this past weekend on the Lower Mainland. Nanaimo went 2-2 in the round robin, starting with a 4-0 shutout over Ladner on Thursday and also including a 12-2 blowout of Ridge Meadows. Nanaimo lost its crossover game to Abbotsford 8-0. The setback is only a minor one, though, as the peewee Pirates prepare for the finale to the 2011 season. The Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association is hosting teams from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for Baseball Canada’s Western Canadian Championships starting Thursday (Aug. 25) at the Serauxmen Sports Fields. For more, please see next issue.

Brady Rogers, Brendan McCarthy and Ben Dunbar of the Hub City Paving Pirates were all part of Team B.C. that won bronze at the national tournament Aug. 10-15. The tourney is the basis for selection to Canada’s national junior team, and Pirates manager Doug Rogers said all the Nanaimo players deserve consideration after their performances in Moncton. A highlight of the tour nament was a m o n s t e r g a m e by Brady Rogers in the round robin in an 8-6 loss to the eventual gold-medal winners, Ontario. The infielder hit three home runs

adding up to six RBIs in the contest. It was the first time in tournament history that a player hit three dingers in one game. “He had that one-ina-lifetime game against the best team‌â€? said Doug Rogers. “It opened up a whole lot of people’s eyes.â€? Brady led the roundrobin in batting average, home runs and RBIs and finished with a .438 average. Clarkson, said Doug Rogers, might have the best chance of any Pirates player of making the junior national team after throwing well in two relief appearances, picking up one win and finishing with a 1.68 earned-
run average. “The scouts who don’t really know him all of a sudden started lifting their guns up and started trying to figure out who this kid was on the mound, Rogers said. “He was touching 87 and living around 84, 85. He’s now put himself on the map. Brendan McCarthy earned the starting job in left field for Team B.C., hitting .300 at the tourney. Dunbar earned the starting catcher’s role and was a rock defensively. “It leads well into next season now for these guys, Rogers said. “Now they have an idea of what’s expected of them.

Inez Mary Thompson (Holmen) peacefully surrounded by family at home in Nanaimo on August 17, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mom was born on August 28th 1932 on her family’s farm in Sedalia, Alberta, the youngest of 3 children. She grew up on the family farm and married the love of her life, our dad, Syd in 1954. Dad’s work with the railway moved them to Springwater, Saskatchewan, where they had their ďŹ rst child, Gary. A couple years later they moved to Nanaimo, where their daughter Gayle was born. Mom and Dad retired in Campbell River where they enjoyed many happy years of camping, ďŹ shing, travelling, gardening and golďŹ ng. Mom loved to play her organ and accordion and could play any song by ear. Adding to her talents, she was an amazing cook, baker and scrabble player. Her favourite times were spent with her cherished family and dear friends. She was a caring and loving wife to our dad who passed away in 2008. She was also a wonderful Mom, Gramma and Great- Gramma. She is survived by her son Gary Thompson (Gail), her daughter Gayle McLeod (Bruce), her grandchildren Teresa (McLeod), Coleman (Matt), Ryan McLeod (Heather), Curtis Thompson, Karen Thompson (Cameron Williams), her sweet great grandchild Callie Coleman, her sister Mildred Anderson (Dick) and many nieces and nephews. She touched so many people’s lives with her sweet, caring and loving nature and will forever be in our hearts. Our family would like to thank Dr. Spry and the home care nurses for all their support. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 23 2011 at 11:00am at the First Memorial Chapel, 1720 Bowen Road, Nanaimo. In lieu of owers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
JOVAN SALAPURA May 8, 1959 ~ August 13, 2011
It’s hard to believe that Jovan’s smiling face will now only be a memory for us all. His life was taken too quickly from this world on August 13th, 2011. He leaves behind his parents, Rade and Naida; his ‘three beautiful girls’: Megan (Mark), Katie and Jes; his partner, Shauna and her daughter Breanna; his sisters: Des (Ron), Nevenka (Keith), Bosiljka (Dave), Jovanka (Peter), and Branka (Dave); his nieces and nephews: Samantha, Niki, Keaton, Natalie, Dylan and Tara; as well as numerous other family and friends. Jovan was born in Port Alberni May 8th, 1959 and moved to Cedar at the age of nine. He had a life-long passion for heavy duty equipment, getting his ďŹ rst backhoe in his early teens. Once he got on an excavator it become an extension of himself and his skill and talent on the machines was well known in the contracting community. If the job was tricky or dangerous they called on him. Perhaps your property’s foundation was excavated by Jovan Salapura. He was a friend and mentor to many operators. As much as he loved to work he also loved his family and friends, often with a dry sarcastic sense of humour. He was a man of character and honour, and was known for his generosity and his heart of gold. A church service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 27th at St.Philips Anglican Church, 1797 Cedar Road. After a private graveside service, a reception will follow at the Cedar Community Hall, 2388 Cedar Road. In lieu of owers, donations can be made to the ‘Jovan Salapura Memorial Award’ at VIU for an enthusiastic and deserving heavy equipment operator student by calling 250-740-6214.
