Inbrief Firefighters feel pretty in pink province

B.C. residents issued ID cards The replacement for B.C.’s CareCard will provide online access to medical records, and may also be used to confirm B.C. residence and age while keeping other information private. Health Minister Mike de Jong announced the new “smart card” plan in May, saying it will also offer the option of doubling as a driver’s licence. The government is phasing out the existing CareCard, mainly because there are 9.1 million cards in circulation and only 4.5 million residents eligible for the Medical Services Plan. The new cards will have a picture and an electronic chip, and be renewable every five years. Labour, Citizen Services and Open Government Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said the government hopes to start issuing them in 2012.

Liberals expand probation options Attorney General Shirley Bond has introduced changes to B.C. law that add new sentencing options for street disorder, unsafe driving and other provincial offences. The amendments would allow charges of being drunk in public to be laid under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act instead of the Criminal Code. Offenders could be placed on probation with conditions such as paying for damages, writing an apology and performing community service, and a new offence of breaching a probation order would be available. Probation options are also being added to existing fines and jail terms for serious Motor Vehicle Act offences such as driving with undue care and attention.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue members are man enough to wear pink, especially when it raises money and awareness for breast cancer. Lieut. Peter Hyne organized the effort, which will see all firefighters wear pink T-shirts during the month of October, while raising about $1,300 for the Canadian Cancer Society. “The money came entirely from our members buying shirts,” said Hyne. “We feel it’s important because it raises awareness for cancer in general, and we all go home at the end of the day to our own families, and some of us face issues at home that deal with cancer.” The T-shirts also represent the fight against cancer some firefighters face as a result of being exposed to carcinogens while on the job, he added. City takes possession of Oceanview properties BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Property that was scheduled to be the site of a sprawling golf resort is now in the City of Nanaimo’s hands. Two properties at Oceanview Resort and Golf Course, formerly Cable Bay, were purchased by the city last Monday at a tax sale after the property’s owner, Canadian Property Investments, failed to pay about $100,000 in taxes over the past three years. The city purchased the 24-hectare parcel at 1170 Phoenix Way as

well as the 36.5-hectare parcel at 1270 Phoenix Way. Those properties were recently assessed at $2.3 million and $3.4 million respectively. The upset price was $39,858.62 for 1170 Phoenix Way and $60,990.12 for 1270 Phoenix Way, said Laura Mercer, spokeswoman for the city’s finance department. “They have one year to pay off all of the taxes owing and then they can get the property back,” she said. The city routinely purchases properties at the annual tax sale, both residential and commercial,

to give the owners an opportunity to keep their property and pay their taxes. The city’s goal, Mercer said, is to collect the taxes rather than have the property transferred. Kim Richard, spokesman for Canadian Property Investments, said that the company intends to move forward with the project once the economic climate improves. Canadian Property Investments purchased the entire 190-hectare piece of land for about $5 million and tried to flip it last year for $60 million with no takers. The project was the subject of

Innovation celebration showcases businesses THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nanaimo boasts plenty of technology trailblazers and forward-thinking entrepreneurs. Of the 33 nominees for the Mid-Island Science Technology and Innovation Council’s Innovation Awards, announced last week, 11 are Harbour City businesses. Nominees manufacture products ranging from underwater inspection-class remotely operated vehicles to a non-toxic treatment for lice and pre-fabricated micro homes that have tiny physical and environmental footprints. “There’s a lot of [local] businesses that are competitive in world markets,” said Paris Gaudet, MISTIC executive director. “But the sector that we work with is very much a hidden sector.” The goal of the annual awards event – set for Nov. 2 at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre – is to shine a light on innovative, science and technology-based companies from Malahat North to the tip of the Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Gulf Islands, recognizing

their contribution to the local economy. Many of these companies have less than five employees and some have no visible storefront, so their names are not necessarily familiar to people, said Gaudet. “It’s really showcasing – or demystifying – what science and technology are,” she said. “People don’t know about what’s going on in their backyard. It gets people thinking about that culture of innovation.” The awards were created in 2006. This year’s 12 categories are: technology leade r s h i p, a dv a n c e d manufacturing, agri foods, digital media, emerging product, environmental excellence, excellence in innovation, information technology, innovative start-up of the year, value added product and a new category – young innovator award. Gaudet said the yo u n g i n n o v a t o r award was added this year to encourage youth to look at careers in science and technology and show them all the unique, innovative opportunities there are in these fields. Craig Rackham, the hovercraft’s captain, who was on duty the night Price needed the trip to Vancouver, said it is a nice treat for the crew to see a happy ending from one of their missions. The crew co-ordinated the visit with Price with a training exercise off Snake Island. “She was a very sick little girl when she came on board and to see her now full of life and energetic is fantastic,” he said. Bosun Kelly Alendal remembers the ashen-faced four-year-old with all of the tubes and wires sticking out of her looked scared until her co-worker, rescue specialist Roy Klohn, handed her a teddy bear. “The smile on her face was just tremendous,” said Klohn, as he watched Emma run around in her new coast guard T-Shirt. Children benefit from centre’s services I FUNDRAISING GALA aims to reduce waiting list for programs. BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Almost 350 children are still waiting up to a year for services at the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. It’s an improvement from a few years ago when more than 400 children could wait up to two years for service, but the centre wants to reduce wait times even more. “To me it’s still horrendous. It’s hard to think of a family waiting that long but it’s still a far cry from two years,” said Michelle Kocourek, resource development for the CDC. Reducing wait times takes money. To raise funds to provide needed services to children, the CDC is hosting its sixth annual Opening Doors Gala: Teaming Up for a Better Tomorrow on Friday (Oct. 14) at the Coast Bastion Inn. The centre hopes to raise $20,000 to fund programs such as speech and occupational therapy. This year’s event features bronze medal Olympian Steve Podborski as the guest speaker and is hosted by popular television personality Bruce Williams. Andrea Forester, who has spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, helped plan the event for months, with her care attendant Christy Michel, and CDC staff Dino Tsembelis and Kocourek. The cause is close to Forester’s heart. She received help from the centre at age five. Now almost 30, she is trying to

give back to an organization that made such a difference in her childhood. “They need the money so they can hire the staff to help these kids,” said Forester. “I want the child development centre to keep helping kids.” Forester said she doesn’t remember the details of the occupational and speech therapy, but what stuck with her is how the therapists made it fun. She participated in activities that kept her engaged and they helped her gain valuable skills that she would use the rest of her life. The child development centre

helps kids in the community and when people donate, they know what the money is being used for, Forester said. At the gala, the centre is asking guests to donate based on hours, therapy or specific programs. A $60 donation gives a child one hour of therapy, while $420 will provide an assessment that includes seven hours of therapy, or allows a child to attend the 10-week Caterpillars to Butterflies program that helps children with social and emotional mental health issues. The gala includes dinner, auction and a raffle for a WestJet travel voucher for two to any

scheduled destination. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in their favourite team colours and jerseys, or as a tacky tourist, for the sports and travel theme. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $80, or $750 for a table of 10. Tax receipts will be issued in the amount of $30 for each ticket purchased. The commission’s budget has been cut 30 per cent since 2002 and the audit had found the agency is underfunded and understaffed to carry out much of its duties. But in a new follow-up report, Doyle scolds the inaction over the past year. Nothing has been done with five recommendations and the rest are only partly implemented.

Premier touts job plan at summit P re m i e r C h r i s t y Clark will headline a long list of keynote speakers at what is shaping up to be an impressive roster at the fifth annual State of the Island Economic Summit, hosted by the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance. The summit will take place at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre Oct. 18-19 and will address some of the challenges, ideas and vision pertaining to the Island’s economy. City struggles with economy As bleak as Nanaimo’s economy looks right now with the highest unemployment rate in the province, there does appear to be a light on the horizon, thanks in part to Premier Christy Clark’s job plan, but also because of the creation of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation. While no government at any level has the ability to magically manufacture jobs, identifying potential and established infrastructure suggests Clark’s priorities are in the right place. But while formerly struggling cities like Kitimat and Prince Rupert have seemingly been gifted strong futures through the plan’s mining and natural gas focus, Nanaimo will have to fend for itself in determining which sector to pursue to create enough work for residents. Traditionally, federal and provincial governments have been responsible for job creation and economic stimulation. Now senior levels of government are essentially saying to cities, ‘tell us what you want your economy to be and we’ll see how we can help you’. Limited by revenue from property taxes, development cost charges and a few other nominal sources, it is a tremendous task with which to burden already overwhelmed cities. In Nanaimo, possibilities include aquaculture, which Vancouver Island University is wellinvested in; new wood fibre products that could be marketed in Asia; tourism; and attracting foreign students. While all of these are not sure-fire job manufacturers – everything succeeds or fails based on variables well beyond anyone’s control – they at least suggest that somebody has agreed to take the helm to provide direction. In Nanaimo, that task has been assigned to the new economic development corporation. It’s a big job, but then again, isn’t putting people to work what it’s all about? Tired politics in need of fresh satire BY JIM ZEEBEN

I can remember the first political platform that I actually took the time to think about. It was on page 8 of the April 26, 1979, edition of the Ottawa Citizen in a story written by staff writer Linda Drouin. The article was about the unveiling of a local candidate in a federal political party. Their platform included a proposal to return to the British custom of driving on the left side of the road. In order to give Canadians time to adjust, the change would be done over a five-year period. In the first year, only trucks and buses would use the left side. The next year, “big American trucks” would make the switch, followed by small imported cars in the third year and, in the final year, two-wheeled vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles and wheelchairs. On first read I crinkled my nose and looked around for someone to share my disbelief. Then I got it. The idea was meant to be ridiculous. I was still in elementary school, but the Rhino Party had made such an impression on me that I spent the next day trying to explain their politics to befuddled classmates. And while the image of cars caught up in a chaotic policy switch was silly enough to capture the imagination of an

11-year-old, the satire also helped shed some light on the very real issue of bureaucratic foolishness plaguing the government. Other Rhino policies of the day included leaving the corner of the dollar bill blank so cashiers could pencil in the value at the time of transaction. This in an era when most commentary about our battered currency was either dire or abstruse or both. The Rhinos made many issues facing Canadians accessible in ways that only good satire can. The humour offended some – the Rhinos actually had 53 candidates, which shocked plenty of people who didn’t have any sense of hee-haw. The original Rhino party disbanded in 1993, after a dispute about a new rule that required parties to run candidates in at least 50 ridings, with each paying a fee of $1,000. A new party bearing the Rhino flag was reborn in 2007 and fielded 14 candidates in the 2011 federal election. A dozen were in Quebec but B.C. and Alberta also had one candidate each. So far they’ve failed to capture Canadians’ imaginations on the scale their forebears did. Satire, as good as it is at shedding light on dense subjects, is very difficult to pull off well. Finding the right mix of irony and sarcasm is critical. It can come across as angry,

even hateful, if not done with care. At one time, satirical columns were common in newspapers but these days most editors are wary of risking the trust of readers. That, and the fact readers are inundated with websites that miss the mark when they attempt satire, but really deal in mock news that’s more misinformation than clever commentary. There are still great sources of satire, of course. Stephen Colbert remains hugely popular around the world and The Onion magazine’s website provides constant fodder for people to share through sites like Facebook. If you can relate to the Brits, the U.K. also continues to pump out comedians with that rare ability to skewer sacred institutions while tickling your funny bone. In Canada, Rick Mercer’s rants consistently find that sweet spot between comedy and crassness. And in the Capital Region, I suppose we’ve seen successful satire with the now-retired Mr. Floatie and his campaign for sewage treatment. I’m curious about the state of satire. I know many letter writers have a rapier-like wit and can take a poke at some of the issues affecting folks. School still People must be included in society in session for teachers To the Editor, Sometimes school is in session for teachers but not for students. On those days, family routines and childcare plans change. Even though students are not in school, teachers are working – developing their skills to enhance student learning. Those days are devoted to professional development, or PD. Topics for PD come from the classroom experience of learning and teaching. Teachers decide individually and together the issues to address. They work with their colleagues at their school, attend workshops and occasionally travel to conferences around the province. PD days are held throughout the year so that teachers can reflect on, and deal with, the emerging issues facing schools. For the teachers in the Nanaimo school district, plans for PD days are well underway. These plans are designed to enhance our teaching and take new skills and knowledge back to the classroom for the benefit of students. Teachers have a long history of working with parents to support their children’s learning. We know that when parents and teachers work together, they make a difference in the lives of children. To the Editor, I am very saddened by the response by north-end residents about social housing in the north end of Nanaimo. We live close to downtown in a condo where there is social housing in the area. We live next to an apartment building which, when we moved here seven years ago, was the pride of the block. It was beautifully maintained, including its gardens. There were tenants who had lived there long term. It was sold to someone who lives not a million miles from the area in dispute for social housing. All the decent tenants who

can afford it have moved. The building falls increasingly into decay, tenanted mostly by drug addicts. The RCMP has threatened to declare it a nuisance building. Please remember that this is a privately owned building, not social housing. I heard recently that the owner of the building has bought a bigger apartment building on Uplands Drive. My heart goes out to the tenants of that building. About all that I can say to north-end residents is that, if you think social housing is bad, just wait. Do the north-end residents

Perform own research with smart meters To the Editor, Re: Dumb leaders attack smart meters, B.C. Views, Oct. 6 Tom Fletcher’s article in which he calls our municipal leaders dumb – yes, you heard it right – only proves that he is the true member of “the dumb and misinformed” club. I suppose that Lloyd’s of London is truly dumb since they have stopped providing liability insurance to companies that install cell towers and other Wi-Fi technology. I suppose the economist that recently stated in the Globe and Mail that Wi-Fi could collapse the global economy should it prove to be the next asbestos is bordering on the classification of moron. I encourage everyone who reads this to search ‘smart meters’ on the Internet and

As well, the consumer benefits from smart meters seem highly overrated. There are still many hydro customers who can figure out that lights and appliances that are turned off use less power than those that are turned on. What this really boils down to is a customer’s right to choose against a monopoly’s right to do as it pleases. In virtually all other cases customers have the right to buy or not to buy a product, whether their reasons are sound or frivolous. Unfortunately hydro is marketed by an unavoidable monopoly, at the request of the government. For practical reasons, there

cannot be competition. Therefore, it is important that customers have the right to refuse what they feel is unsafe technology and the government should force B.C. Hydro to accommodate these customers’ wishes. Even if some day it is proven that smart meters pose no health hazards, in the meantime, forcing citizens to constantly live with a device that causes them stress and anxiety definitely is a health hazard. Refugee family welcomed to new Harbour City home It takes a whole community to welcome a family, and the Nanaimo Refugee Sponsorship Group said thanks for the effort. The group sponsored Ashraf, Hala and Abdullah Auqab, a Palestinian family which spent the last six years in the El Hol refugee camp in Syria. On Oct. 2, the family was officially welcomed to Nanaimo with a dinner at St. Andrew’s United Church. The event was also a thank you to all the people in the community who made this sponsorship possible. Special recognition was given to children and young people who initiated creative fundraising ideas. Ashraf Auqab spoke on behalf of his wife and son, thanking the people for not

only bringing them to Nanaimo, but for providing a warm and generous welcome. As Nanaimo awaits the arrival of its second sponsored family, other Island communities have been inspired to sponsor. Eight churches in Cedar, Ladysmith and Chemainus are working with their communities to bring another family of three to Vancouver Island. Comox and Courtenay plan to sponsor a family of five and discussions are underway in Victoria to initiate a sponsorship. Three Anglican churches in Victoria already sponsored three families more than a year ago. “People involved in the sponsorship recognize that Nanaimo has its own important issues around poverty and homelessness

which need to be addressed by all citizens,” said Eva Manly of the refugee sponsorship group. “At the same time we want to thank everyone who shares in our small contribution to a massive world problem.”

Youth serve in politics

PARTICIPANTS TAKE part in legislative work over winter holidays.

The B.C. Youth Parliament is after 95 young men and women to visit Victoria this Christmas, debate important service projects to benefit the youth of the province, and put those plans in place in 2012. Community and youth leaders across the province have until Oct. 26 to nominate young people to take part in this opportunity. “BCYP is education and community service in action,” said Jessica McElroy, premier for the upcoming year of youth parliament. “We’re after young people who want to learn more about our system of government, make lifelong friends, and take part in proj-

ects that benefit our province’s youth.” The youth parliament is a nonpartisan, non-demoninational service organization. Members spend time at the legislature in Victoria between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve to debate and vote on the organization’s proposed activities and issues of local, national, and international importance. All sit as independents, and are free to vote according to their conscience on the issues. Potential BCYP members must be: between 16 and 21 years of age; residents of the province for the past year; able to commit to a year’s worth of service; and interested in learning more about how the democratic system works. Sauce: 1 c. (250 ml) baby spinach leaves - packed 1 c. (250 ml) arugula leaves – packed ½ shallot 3/4 c. (175 ml) sour cream 3 tbsp. (45 ml) whole grain dijon mustard ½ c. (125 ml) cucumber – peeled, seeded and chopped Mix wine, orange juice and soy sauce together in a large glass baking dish. Add the salmon fillets with the flesh side down. Cover with saran and refridgerate for 2 hours, turning occasionally. Preheat oven to 450ºF (220ºC). Line a baking sheet with foil. Remove the salmon from the marinade and place on the foil, skin side down. Bake for about 15 min. or until fish flakes easily. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Concerto contest seeks musicians

Liszt feted with piano concert

Young musicians have the opportunity to win a spot to play with a full string orchestra. The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra seeks applications for its sixth annual Young Musician’s Concerto Competition in February. Open to musicians 21 years old or younger, the competition is announced with plenty of time for students to work with their teacher to prepare a piece of work. The orchestra hosts the competition as part of its mandate to provide mentorship, encouragement and opportunities for promising young students. The orchestra hopes students choose to participate in auditions. SEAMAS FINNERTY The winner and the runner-up receive cash prizes, with the winner featured as the guest artist for the orchestra’s two concerts in June. Students who previously auditioned are encouraged to do so again, having had another year of development under their belts. Over the past five years, the orchestra featured two violinists, a bassoonist, a flutist and a pianist, each playing a full concerto. Last year’s winner, Seamas Finnerty, won $500 and played Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D with the orchestra in Nanaimo. The Grade 11 student at Nanaimo District Secondary School earned his Grade 10 in piano, under the direction of Lynn Gauthier, and continues to study the instrument. To celebrate the 200th birthday of one of history’s great composers, pianist Sayuri Kubota performs a concert of his work. Kubota’s second piano recital features the music of Franz Liszt as well as that of some of her favourite composers, Schumann and Chopin. The composers lived during the same period and were friends. Kubota began piano lessons at age four and while she wanted to be a professional musician she became a math teacher instead. Piano became her hobby until she moved to Canada in 1992. Despite the busy life of a high school teacher and mother, she resumed piano lessons with Teresa Marusarz-Borek more than six years ago. Since then, Kubota performed regularly at recitals and master classes in Nanaimo. Kubota performs Saturday (Oct. 15), 7:30 p.m., at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Admission by donation, with proceeds to Nanaimo Conservatory of Music.

Faster than a speeding bullet, the new Superman movie Man of Steel wrapped up filming in Cassidy. A spokesperson for the film Autumn Frost, the code name reportedly being used for the Superman movie, said the crew of around 240, including 38 local extras, were at the site of the Cassidy Pub off the TransCanada Highway for two days

on Wednesday and Thursday. Crews filmed on a closed set, which meant no media access and little revealed as to what role the pub and the local actors play in the film, set for release in 2013. Several logging trucks were brought in for the shoot, along with some out-of-season snow. It fits in with a casting call in Nanaimo a few months ago, which called for extras who fit a hard-working lumberjack profile. Hundreds of hopefuls

lined up outside the Coast Bastion Inn for a chance at a spot in the film. Filming also took place in Ucluelet and Vancouver, as well as locations in the U.S. “It’s been great,” said the spokesperson. “It’s pretty quick, in and out, but it’s always nice to be on the Island. It’s beautiful, as long as the rain holds off.” The movie stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe and Amy Adams.

The Regional District of Nanaimo, Recreation and Parks Department, is currently developing a management plan for Moorecroft Regional Park. WHITE, Dr. Lloyd Archibald January 7, 1942 ~ October 2, 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden, yet peaceful, passing of Dr. Lloyd Archibald White at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Sunday, October 2, 2011, with his son by his side. Lloyd is survived by his daughter; Laurel (Don) Burgess of Bermuda; son, Aaron (Lauren) of Saskatoon, SK; and grandchildren: Jackson, Abigail and Seth, who he described as the “apples of his eye.” He is also survived by his father, Earl; brothers: Philip (Darline), Lee (Dawnelda), and William; as well as his niece, Adrienne (Alex) and nephew, Curtis (Deanna). He will be deeply missed by many cousins, colleagues and friends; as well as his beloved cat, Katie. He was predeceased by his mother, Ethel (nee Cox), and an infant sister. Lloyd was born on January 7, 1942 in Truro, NS. He was educated at town and county schools, and went on to receive his B.Sc. (Acadia), M.Sc., (Guelph-OAC) and Ph.D. in Microbiology (Macdonald-McGill). He was a long time Public Servant for the Department of National Defense, developing strategies to defend our country against biological warfare agents. He was employed at the Defense Research Board of Canada in Sufﬁeld, AB, and served at DND National Headquarters in Ottawa, before retiring to Nanaimo, BC. He lived his life constantly exploring, through his work as a scientist, his canoe trips in Canada’s west and north, in his motor home throughout North America, and on his many travels around the globe. He was a loving father, an adoring grandfather, a die-hard hockey fan and former coach, and an avid supporter of the Conservative party. A Memorial Service will be held at the R.C. Legion #256, 1630 Wellington Rd E, Nanaimo, on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 2:00pm. With a lunch afterwards.. Interment in Truro, NS will follow later this month. In lieu of ﬂowers, donations can be made in memory of Lloyd to Acadia University Associated Alumni (giving.acadiau.ca), 512 Main Street, Wolfville, NS, B4P 2R6. “We love you, Dad. George D’Orsay June 21 1944 ~ Sept. 28, 2011 It is with great sadness and heartache that we announce the sudden passing of Kenneth (Ken) George D’Orsay on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, following a very short battle with cancer. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 21, 1944, Ken was the adopted son, and only child of loving parents, Mary and James D’Orsay. At age 50, following a long and eventful search, Ken found and met his birth mother, Betty; 5 siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, many of whom resided in Fox Harbour, Newfoundland. He, and they, were thrilled and their love flourished and grew. The majority of Ken’s career was in the forest industry, driving logging truck and as camp manager at various locations up and down the West Coast, the interior of BC and in Haida Gwaii. He was well known for his abilities in conflict resolution and his firm, but fair work ethic. He also drove fuel truck, city bus and most recently, in retirement, was a courier for LifeLabs. Ken had a lifelong passion for the sea and sailing, and was a member of the Nanaimo Yacht Club and the Canadian Power Squadron. He enjoyed motorcycling and playing guitar and piano, singing many a jaunty east coast ditty. He was a long-time friend of Bill W. Ken’s most memorable talent was his ability to “tell his story,” for the benefit and mentorship of others, with impeccable timing, wonderful humour and heartfelt emotion and compassion. Ken is predeceased by his parents: birth mother; stepson, Jim Hughes and his special friend and sidekick of 18 years, Simba. He is survived and sorely missed by his loving wife, Robin (Humphrey); 5 step-sons, 2 stepdaughters, 4 siblings and their families. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation are extended to Dr. Davies, Dr. McLaughlan, Dr. Roe and the nurses and staff on the 3rd and 5th floors of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, for their compassionate care and concern... and, by the way, he loved the food. Ken’s love and friendships will last our lifetime, and his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who experienced the gift of having met this wonderful man. May your soul fly away briefly, and with its rebirth, the world will, again, be an even better place. revor Fitzgerald only knows junior A hockey at its highest level. The Nanaimo Clippers newcomer has been to the Royal Bank Cup national championship tournaments the past two springs with his former team, the Vernon Vipers. He knows what it takes, so to speak, and there’s good news: the Clippers have the makings of a championship team. But so do 15 other clubs around the the B.C. Hockey League. “Every team’s got it,” Fitzgerald said. “I think the difference is just how much you want it. Some teams want it more than others.” Differences in size and skill are less pronounced at playoff time, the veteran said, and it comes down to character, the willingness to battle. “We have the makings of it if we want it. It’s there for the taking.” This time of year is a starting point, when all the pieces are starting to fit together. Fitzgerald is one newcomer among many on the 2011-12 Clippers, but he was perhaps the most highly touted off-season acquisition. Traded from his hometown Vipers to the Prince George Spruce Kings in the off-season, Fitzgerald wasn’t thrilled about playing in P.G. and requested a

trade. Prince George was willing to deal him, but only for a Spruce Kings’ ransom – Fitzgerald, blueliner Josh Bryan and another player were swapped for Gerry, Myles and Leo Fitzgerald and defence prospect Jesse Ursic. The triplets were Nanaimo’s most popular players last year and are off to a hot start in P.G., but the Clippers’ new Fitzgerald said there’s no point feeling any pressure that way. “There’s not much I can do, other than do my best and show the fans that I want to be here,

that the trade was worth it,” he said. Clippers fans won’t have any complaints so far. Trevor Fitzgerald couldn’t have had much of a better debut in orange and black, scoring a huge game-saving goal with 30 seconds left in the season opener in Powell River. At press time he was the team’s leading scorer with three goals and three assists in five games. Dover wrestler wins B.C. award One of Nanaimo’s top young wrestling prospects is already a provincial standout.The B.C. Wrestling Association announced last week that Faye Tuck of the Dover Bay Dolphins is its Most Outstanding School Wrestler for the 2011-12. Tuck won gold medals at the Western Canadian Championships and the Alberni Invitational tournament and took fourth place at provincial championships.
