Beetle

Golf/GTI

Following a one-year absence, the Beetle is back with sharper styling, a roomier and up-to-date interior and more power. Gone is the New Beetle’s oval, almost cartoonish appearance, replaced by a longer hood and flatter roofline that ends in a rounded hatchway flanked by a set of prominent taillights. The Beetle is wider by more than 7.5 centimetres and has been lengthened by 15 centimetres. Additionally, the distance between the front and rear wheels has been increased to create some much-needed rear-seat legroom plus a more generous stowage area with either the 50:50 split rear seat occupied or folded flat. On up-level models a trio of gauges (oil temp, turbo boost pressure and clock/stopwatch) seem inspired by the Porsche 911 cockpit. Getting the Beetle up to speed are three distinct powerplants. Base models arrive with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder that pretty much carries over from the New Beetle. Optional is VW’s popular 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (TDI) that offers a very real alternative to most gas-electric hybrids when overall fuel economy and initial purchase cost are

Volkswagen knows how to make sporty, efficient vehicles, but is finally listening to its fan base. While the fun GTI has been the definition of “hot hatch” for decades, it has been outgunned in recent years by younger competitors from Japan and North America. For 2012, the German automaker offers up the limited edition Golf R with its 256-horsepower version of the GTI’s familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, only available with a six-speed manual transmission. It’s also the only Golf to feature all-wheel-drive to better help put the grunt to the road. The regular Golf remains available in two- and four-door hatchback and four-door wagon variants with a base 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. There’s also a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that’s quite torquey and good for 4.6 l/100 km on the highway and 6.7 in the city, which is about 35 per cent better than the base 2.5. As before, the sporty GTI is available in two- and four-door models and comes with a carryover 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder along with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional paddled-shifted paddled shifted six six-speed speed Direct

The top-rung and most performance-focused Beetle gets it done with a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that also returns slightly better fuel economy than the base fivecylinder engine.

Jetta

Jetta Hybrid

The old 115-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine was returned to the fold. VW claims about a 10-second zero-to-100-km time, which is not amazing acceleration, but it works for cost-conscious buyers more interested in the bottom line than pep. The 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder gas engine returns as an option, as does the popular 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (called the TDI) that’s rated at 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.6 l/100 km on the highway. The performance-minded Jetta GLI finally returns with its 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and track-tuned suspension, big wheels and sticky tires. The gasoline engines are mated to fivespeed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics. The turbo-diesel offers a six-speed manual or optional sixspeed automated manual transmission called the DSG (short for Direct Shift Gearbox) that does away with the pesky torque converter, which means improved fuel economy and much quicker shifts to aid acceleration. Equipment levels on the price-leader Trendline and Comfortline models pretty much mirror what you’ll find from the co pet t o . You’ll competition. ou get a basic bas c audio aud o syssys

The new Jetta Hybrid offers the best of all worlds, marrying performance and engaging handling with miserly combined fuel economy. Powering the all-new model is a high-tech turbocharged gasoline engine mated to a zero- emissions electric motor. The sporty hybrid consumes about 20 per cent less fuel than a similarly powered sedan with a conventional drivetrain. In city traffic, the fuel economy advantage climbs to a little over 30 percent. As in the Touareg Hybrid SUV, the Jetta Hybrid features a clutch that decouples the gasoline engine from the drivetrain when in pure electric drive or coasting modes. A lithium-ion battery supplies the energy to the electric motor. The compact 220volt, 1.1 kWh battery is integrated behind the rear bench seat and weighs less than 80 lb. The battery consists of 60 individual cells with a combined energy capacity of 5 Ah. The frequency of the discharge and charge cycles in hybrid operation requires high-performance battery cooling, which is handled by a fan mounted directly on t e device. the de ce. Passat

Tiguan

The new Passat is nine centimetres longer overall and the distance between the front and rear wheels has been stretched by about the same amount, which makes for an appreciable gain in passenger room. The interior styling, inspired by Volkswagen’s new-look Touareg sport ute, is clean and uncluttered. VW has dropped the Passat’s previously standard 200-horsepower 2.0-litre fourcylinder turbocharged powerplant and replaced it with a less-expensive non-turbo 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder. A 280-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 is optional, as is Volkswagen’s hybrid-challenging 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that will give the Passat a claimed rating of 6.8 l/100 km on the highway (4.4 in the city), along with a range approaching 1,300 kilometres. The base 2.5 offers a five-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. Meanwhile both the V6 and the turbo-diesel operates with a six-speed dual-clutch (automated manual) gearbox. The Passat’s startingpoint Trendline model is equipped with automatic climate control, cruise control,

The Tiguan is the latest Volkswagen to get its face lifted and now looks even more like its larger Touareg sibling. The horizontal grille splits bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlights and U-shaped LED (light emitting diode) on top-end models, while the rear taillights get more subtle tweaks. Equally sharp looking is the interior that carries over for 2012 with the highend-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers will appreciate the 15 centimetres of fore/aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can be folded flat. The space is made even more generous due to the extralow load floor. The Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. Tiguan runs the spectrum with three trim levels and plenty of base equipment of the air/cruise/power variety as well as redesigned alloy wheels - including giant 19-inch R Design beauties on the loaded SEL - and six standard airbags. CX-5

Mazda3

Skyactiv technologies are a holistic approach to improving all future Mazdas through what the automaker bills as “optimized internal combustion and lightweight engineering.” To that end, the Hiroshimabased automaker is focusing its efforts on engines, transmissions, body, and chassis development to achieve performance and efficiency goals. The 2013 CX-5 is the first offering with Mazda’s entire suite of Skyactiv technologies in one vehicle. The CX-5’s Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter gas engine differs slightly from the unit installed in the Mazda3. It boosts the compact sedan and hatch’s already lofty 12:1 compression ratio to 13:1, courtesy of a new 4-2-1 exhaust manifold made possible by designing the engine and chassis at the same time. The direct-injected engine makes the same 155 horsepower as in the Mazda3, and peak torque is up 2 lb-ft, now at an even 150. The compression ratio bump is good for more midrange torque around the 3000 rpm range -- important in the 356- to-574-pound heavier crossover. And impressively, it does it all on 87-octane fuel.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder uses Mazda’s new “Skyactiv” direct-gasolineinjection technology to boost both power and efficiency. Compared to the old 2.0-litre (which carries over in base models) the Skyactiv has 155 horsepower (versus 148) and 148 poundfeet of torque (versus 135). It also wins in fuel economy too, netting 7.1 city and 4.9 highway with the available six-speed automatic transmission, or 7.7/5.0 with the sixspeed manual. Very impressive. But Skyactiv is really more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy extends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response. For now, only the Skyactiv Mazda3 is upgraded in such a manner. If you’re not getting into the Skyactiv game, your choices consist of carryover models from 2011. Base sedans and hatchbacks run with the same 148-horsepower 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine that’s connected to the five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Optional is a 167-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. Here, your transmission picks consist of a slick slick-shifting shifting six-speed six speed manual

Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2-litre (155) Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheeldrive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic l/100 km(city/highway): 5.7/7.8 (MT)

Front-drive CX-5s can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or a sixspeed automatic. All-wheel-drive models are available only with the automatic. All-wheel-drive models will take 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph. Mazda also targeted 50 highway mpg with the manual transmission. Automatic, frontwheel-drive vehicles should achieve the same city mileage and drop just one highway km/litre. Mazda officials were mum on whether the Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine will be available a a ab e later ate in tthee C CX-5. 5.

CX-9

Mazda5

Mazda’s pair of on-road wagons will become a trio later in 2012 when the compact CX-5 joins the party. It’ll be just like the Three Bears, and in this case, the seven-seat CX-9 is the full-on Poppa Bear. And we’re not talking occasional seating for seven, but a full third-row seat for real, live, adult earthlings. While it would have been easy enough for Mazda to graft extra length to the CX-7 to create the CX-9 (and probably ruin the vehicle’s near-perfect proportions in the process) Mazda stylists were careful to make the CX-9 its own vehicle. The lines are a little less abrupt and exaggerated than those of the CX-7, and the overall look is certainly more formal. The smaller CX-7 wears a base 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a five-speed automatic transmission. By contrast, the CX-9 comes with a 273-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 with decent fuel efficiency, as high as 12.7/8.4 (city/highway) l/100 km for front-drive models. While the CX-7 and 9 are visually similar, there’s not all that much - if anything, really - that interchanges, especially when it comes to the body. However, both are available in front or optional p

The original Mazda5 that was introduced for the 2006 model year delivered plenty of style, comfort for six people and exceptional fuel economy all wrapped up in a compact package. The newly updated 2012 edition promises more of the same. The Mazda5’s platform is based on the same one that supports the Mazda3 sedan/hatchback, except that it has been stretched by 13 centimetres between the front and rear wheels to accommodate three rows of seats. Interestingly, Mazda’s mini minivan is actually a hair shorter than the Mazda3 sedan, which restricts the amount gear you can cram into the back when all three rows of seats are in use. However the highly versatile interior allows you to fold flat either or both of the sliding and reclining second-row buckets, or the 50:50 split folding rear bench to create the exact mix of passengers and cargo. The Mazda5 now comes with a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder powerplant that’s also employed in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 passenger cars as well as the CX-7 tall wagon. For its role in the Mazda5, the 2.5 produces a peak 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, up from 153 horses and 148 pound-feet of torque that the outgo g 2.3-litre going .3 t e ge generated. e ated.

The CX-9 is available in front-wheel-drive GS and all-wheel-drive GT trims with a healthy base features list that includes front and rear air conditioning, new-design 18-inch wheels and most power features. Selecting the GT also adds leather seats, power moonroof and liftgate, power seats, blind-spot monitoring, keyless start, revised 20-inch wheels, bright xenon headlamps and rain-sensing wipers. p A navigation g system y is optional. p

Outlander

Lancer

The Outlander conveys two distinct personalities. Its Lancer Evolutioninspired wide-mouth grille gives this wagon a toughguy appearance. However look past the nose and you’ll find a typical benign family-type wagon with lots of room in back for stowing your gear in the optional third-row “compact seat”. Front- and all-wheel-drive ES models employ the 168-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder rated at 9.0 l/100 km in the city and 7.0 highway. The numbers for 230horse V6 - standard on the all-wheel-drive LS and XLS versions - remain unchanged at 11.0/7.9. A continuously variable transmission directs power to the front wheels in four-cylinder units, while a six-speed automatic gets the nod when it comes to front- and four-wheel-drive Outlanders fitted with the V6. Although it’s bigger than your typical sedan, the Outlander drives much like a car, especially since its underpinnings have been borrowed from the Lancer. Air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry, six-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors

The Lancer is the volume leader of the Mitsubishi fleet and as such offers a wide variety of models designed to satisfy nearly every taste and performance inclination, from plain-Jane grocery hauler to all-out allwheel-drive sports sedan that’s the basis for the company’s rally-racing activities. For the 2012 model year the Lancer offers a new SE AWD trim level with the sole aim of giving Canadians a fighting chance when running up against Old Man Winter. All-wheel-drive will be included on this model along with your choice of a five-speed manual, or optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). Other features consist of heated front seats and outside mirrors and added interior/exterior trim pieces. Otherwise, the rest of the Lancer line stands pat: the Subaru WRX-fighting Ralliart (sedan and hatchback); and the Evolution that dukes it out with the WRX STI derivative feature all-wheel-drive and turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines. However, there’s “only” 237 horsepower to play with in the Ralliart, while the Evo spools out 291 barely

are standard on each and every model. Unique to all Outlanders is a clever liftgate configuration; pop up the top half and the lower portion folds down - and level - with the load floor. Plus, it can support up to 200 kilograms, which should be enough for a couple of tailgaters to kick back.

RVR

i-Miev

Think of the RVR as being similar to the Outlander wagon in style, but shorter by more than 35 centimetres. From stem to stern, the design is cohesive and clean cut. It also works well with the Lancer Evolution-style open-mouth nosepiece that Mitsubishi claims was inspired by jet-fighter air intakes. Providing the thrust is a Lancer-based 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted to the base ES front-wheeldrive models, while a continuously variable (CVT) unit is standard in both the two- and all-wheel-drive SE versions. Paddle shifters that control the six artificial steps (designed to emulate the more familiar operation of a conventional automatic transmission) are part of the CVT package. The RVR’s optional all-wheel-drive is controlled through a knob on the floor console. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle remains in front-wheeldrive, but when tire slip is detected, up to 70 per cent of the engine’s torque can be directed to the back wheels. The AWD unit can also be set to the “Lock” position that maintains a 60:40 torque split

The i-MiEV hatchback joins the all-electric Nissan Leaf plus the gasoline-supported Chevrolet Volt as pioneers in the clean energy movement. However the Zero-emissions hatchback will be one of the smallest electrical offerings to be mass-produced for general consumption. As a short-haul urban commuter pod, it easily accommodates four adults as long as they’re packing light. The i’s top speed is set at 130 km-h, but driving at that velocity for any length of time will quickly sap its 330-volt lithiumion battery pack positioned beneath the passenger floor. The system flows power to the 80-kilowatt (107-horsepower) electric motor. The i’s range at about 155 kilometres per charge. Piloting the i involves shifting the single-speed controller to one of three operating modes: “D” for optimum performance; “Eco” for maximum battery life; or “B” to maximize the amount of regenerative breaking that replenishes the batteries more quickly and stretches the i’s effective range. A 240-volt home charging system requires about six hours to top up the i, or 22.5-hours if you tap into a 120-volt 120 volt outlet found in virtu virtu-

Wheels 2012 special edition

Corolla

Prius

With a plethora of new compact models that have recently cropped up in the past year, the 2012 Corolla could find itself in a serious dogfight. Fortunately, the compact Toyota, and the current record holder as the world’s best-selling automotive brand, has plenty of admirers and plenty of experience at offering a solid product with a reputation for bulletproof reliability. The current Corolla arrived for the 2009 model year and received mid-cycle front and rear styling makeover and a change in model designations for 2011. Three trim levels - CE, S, and LE - come with a 132-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, while the XRS carries over with a 158-horsepower 2.4-litre I4. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all but the S trim, while a four-speed automatic is available on all but the XRS, which gets a five-speed automatic as an option. Base Corollas feature 15-inch steel wheels, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, split-folding rear seat and a fourspeaker audio system. For the 2012 model year, power door locks, remote keyless entry and an auto-down feature for the d e s side driver’s s de power po e window do are a e expected e pected

Over its decade on sale in three separate editions, the Prius has proven to be one of the most practical and cleanest ways to significantly reduce emissions and fuel use. The 2012 Prius family has expanded with a larger wagon, dubbed the Prius v, that’s aimed at growing “green” families. Next up will be a Plug-in Hybrid that can operate on battery power alone for up to 20 kilometres and at speeds up to 100 km-h. The smaller pack allows a full charge in only three hours using a household plug or half that with a 240-volt outlet. The really good part is that once the battery is drained, the car still acts like a regular Prius, meaning a fuel-economy rating of 3.7 l/100 km city and 4.0 highway. The wagon’s utility is expanded for more rear legroom, shoulder room and more cargo space behind the rear seats. The v also offers some extra-clever storage in the centre console and door pockets. Perhaps this is our first hybrid mini-minivan? All three Prii will have optional content lists chock full of technology and gadgets to make driving the hybrid more pleasurable, including a unique power moonroof/solar panel that runs an electric fan to cool inte inte-

That model retains its up-level six-speaker stereo with its USB port and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, which is good for hands-free phone operation. The sportier looking S adds 16-inch alloy wheels, exterior body cladding, rear spoiler, fog lamps a d firmer and e front o t seats.

RAV4

Tacoma

Most car-based compact sport utility vehicles and all-wheel-drive tall wagons owe a debt of gratitude to the size-small RAV4. The fuel-efficient wagon’s affordable price and pumpsnubbing fuel economy have kept it on many shoppers’ want lists for years. Dial in its available seven-passenger configuration (a rarity in this class) and you have a versatile, good-looking hauler that maintains a steady grip on the road when the going gets greasy. Where the original RAV had a small four-cylinder engine, you can option the current model with a 269-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. The standard engine is a 179-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission. The V6 uses a five-speed automatic. RAV4 is available in Base, Sport and Limited trim levels and each is available in front- or four-wheel drive - no matter the engine - the latter of which can be “locked” for severe use. To help make the off-pavement journeys more pleasant, the RAV4 can be ordered with hill-start assist to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward while traveling uphill, and downhill assist to prevent 4x4 V6 models from getting away from the d e on driver o a steep downhill do grade. g ade.

With rivals taking their toys and going home, the Toyota Tacoma remains just about the only real option left if you’re not interested in a full-size pickup truck, but are in need of decent utility. Despite its relative age, Toyota has unleashed a trickle of updates for 2012, including a very subtle reshaped grille and headlights, and new exterior mirrors. Under the long hood rests either a base 159-horsepower four-cylinder that could use an upgrade, or if towing/hauling is more of a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. Tacomas come in either extended Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models and your choice of rear-or fourwheel-drive for all. The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases is made of composite plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also get a hose-out heavy-duty all-weather flooring and an available bedrail utility system of bins, dividers and two hooks lets you securely stow gear in back. For 2012, the radio also gets upgraded with a larger 3.3-inch (8.4-centimetre) sc ee that screen t at doub doubles es as the t e backup bac up camca

Wheels 2012 special edition

Accent

Elantra

The 2012 edition is available in four-door sedan and hatchback formats and appears to be yet another game-changing model for Hyundai. The sedan’s new sheetmetal has a similar look to that of the mid-size Sonata and compact Elantra models, especially the deeply sculpted crease extending along the doors and fenders and ending with a hiked-up rear deck. The same is essentially true for the wagon-like hatchback, although its sweeping roofline, curvaceous liftgate and dominating tail lamps make it the most practical Accent and arguably the best looking of the two. Both share the same platform that extends the distance between the front and rear wheels by nearly three inches over the previous model, which is important real estate for maxing out both leg and knee room. In terms of stowage, Hyundai claims the hatchback bests all comers with the second-row in place. The Accent’s 1.6-litre engine produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque, up from 110/106. The base fourdoo L with door t tthee manual a ua gearbox gea bo includes c udes

Hyundai’s California design studio gets the credit for creating the Elantra’s silhouette that was brought to market for the 2011 model year. The stylists were obviously pretty satisfied with their work on the 2011 Sonata since they clearly stuck to the same basic pattern, albeit in a somewhat smaller scale. The swoops and swirls theme visible along the Elantra’s flanks and rear end also show up on the ultra-modern dashboard: it’s a genuine work of art. What has also increased is the output. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine is smaller than the previous 2.0-litre unit, but the 1.8 puts out 148 horsepower a gain of 10 over the 2.0. It’s also about 34 kilograms lighter and is rated at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic). New for the 2012 model year is an ActiveECO system for automatic-equipped cars that basically updates the transmission shift programming and engine fuel mapping for claimed gains in fuel economy in the seven per cent range. Base Elantra L models include the usual power-operated power operated

Stepping up to the GL also gets you air conditioning, cruise control and the usual powered accessories, while the toplevel GLS takes its full-load role seriously. Leather seats and navigation system are missing from the factory-installed option list, indicating that Hyundai is keeping the Accent’s trim levels as close to the bone as possible and in line with the co pet t o . competition.

Sonata

Veloster

The Sonata’s bold look is unmistakable, which is a good thing in this class. And unlike all the competitors, the Sonata doesn’t offer a V6. The base engine is a 198-horsepower 2.4litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the all-new Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’s other critical ingredient is the first-time use of a 270volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km-h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The vehicle’s 5.5 l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is also at the top of the class. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while both the turbocharged engine and the Hybrid employ only six-speed automatics. Base GL Sonatas include the usual power-operated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and keyless push-button start. Thee mid-range d a ge GLS G S bulks bu s up with t a power po e

The Veloster is the replacement for the Tiburon sport coupe that was phased out a few years ago. The key design element is the well-camouflaged passenger-side rear opening that doesn’t require the front door to be unlatched first. The interior provides seating for four passengers plus easy-to-read gauges and controlpanel knobs for the driver. The Veloster comes with an all-new 138-horsepower 1.6-litre engine that’s also used in the sub-compact Accent. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while optional is a six-speed automated dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that does away with the traditional torque converter. The DCT includes hillstart assist that helps prevent the Veloster from rolling backward when stopped on an incline. Specifying the DCT adds a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fuel economy. Forte

Optima

Even though by modern standards the Forte sedan is approaching mid-life, there’s no crisis for Kia. For those who need more flexibility hauling bulky objects, the five-door hatchback should be an easy choice. To better distinguish it from the sedan, the Forte5 hatchback gets a different grille, alloy wheels, lower valence design and centre console. Both models share a logically configured dashboard/control panel with its minimum of dials and switches. The Forte’s platform provides a reasonably agile behind-the-wheel experience. This is especially true of the Forte SX that possesses a sport-tuned suspension plus larger-than-standard front brake rotors for added stopping power. The Forte starts with a 156-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder in base LX and mid-range EX trims. Opting for the more performance-minded SX gets you a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. Both engines use either six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmissions. Choosing the automatic also brings steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for extra control. The LX is pretty basic, but does pro pro-

It’s hard to be a standout in a vehicle line as attractive as Kia’s, but the Optima’s chiseled European lines are hard to ignore. The whole line looks even better thanks to standard front fog lights and new LED taillights on mid-line models. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of powerful four-cylinder engines: the entry-level is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower, while an optional turbocharged 274-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine will sate your desire for speed. There’s also a gasoline-electric version of the 2.4 that produces a net 206 horsepower. As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid system uses never-before-employed lithiumpolymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The Hybrid can travel at speeds up to 100 km-h without t out tthee gas engine e g e assisting. ass st g.

Rio

Sorento

The all-new Rio sedan and Rio 5-Door hatchback bear little resemblance to their predecessors. The sheetmetal on the Rio and Rio 5-Door hatchback is now much more pleasing, especially the slinkier hatch edition that features its own grille, bumper and, of course, rear deck. The dashboard layout is also attractively shaped, clearly presented and, due to a reduction of hard plastic surfaces, is far richer looking than in past Rios. The air conditioning, rear-window heat and ventilation toggle switches are a particularly nice touch. The new standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder produces 138 horsepower and 123 poundfeet of torque, a gain of 28 horses and 16 pound-feet of torque, compared to the outgoing 1.6, which is significant on a 1,100-kilogram vehicle. The lighter (by 13 kilograms) engine is connected to a sixspeed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. The engine is available with what Kia calls Idle Stop and Go (ISG). This optional automatic-transmission-only feature shuts off the engine after the Rio comes to a complete stop, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. The ISG is part of a optional an opt o a Eco co Dynamics y a cs Package ac age that t at

Only a year into the Sorento’s new lease on life as an urbanized big wagon, Kia is making some significant changes to broaden its appeal. It remains a stylish, comfortable machine that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2012 edition, available in frontor all-wheel-drive, also offers a splitfolding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a new base 191-horsepower direct-injection version of the four-banger (replacing the previous 175-horsepower I4) and an optional 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are closely matched in terms of fuel economy, although the new directinjection engine does hit 9.5 l/100 km on the highway. A six-speed automatic is now the sole transmission available, while allwheel-drive is available with either engine. Standard features include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering column and steering-wheel-located audio controls. Along o g with t tthee automatic auto at c

Kia claims overall fuel consumption is reduced by about three per cent. That’s only a slight decrease, but every little bit helps and the Rio’s 6.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway ratings are a no-contest improvement.
