PROPOSAL
research question
:
How can we design a platform for youth who want to explore identity and activate creativity?
project statement
:
We have chosen to work together as partners knowing that we both have different skills sets, yet, we are able to highlight those in each others as designers. Since knowing eachother, a topic that has frequently arisen is self expression and influence from our mothers. From that, the question that came about is how can we create a platform for other young people to freely express and feel comfortable in their own skin. Conformity and rigidity govern everything from our social customs to how we get dressed in the morning; being a flamingo in a flock of pigeons isn’t necessarily the goal. Left and right, we’re exposed to broadcastings of the “supposed to be/do” and that emotions are either negative or positive. We’re raised to mold to the majority rather than navigating our own paths and find that it may be uneasy when we choose to defy the gravity of standards.
7
SECOND° FASHION AS A TOOL FOR SELF-EXPRESSION
DIVERSITY + INCLUSIVITY Looking back at our childhood, and being integrated with people from other backgrounds and cultures, we realized that it isn’t much different in other places in ways that people subscribe to “the norm”. Since last semester, we knew we wanted to include these topics of discussion: Diversity + Inclusivity. That got us started questioning who our audience would be … and the answer that we landed on was: anyone & everyone but intending it to be for teens & young adults. Growing up in an asian household, conformity and rigidity informed everything. Standing out is not exactly something everyone strives for. We are taught as children that the way we present ourselves matter (alot). Expressing ourselves outside of what is deemed as “normal” is unacceptable that emotions are either negative or positive most of which is influenced by the media, something that is fastely tangible for people of all ages. In our culture respect was a given as to here you earn the respect esp to your elders. I.e. even in our languages, different levels of respect are addressed. Such as in Tagalog, we use a word ‘po’ or ‘opo’ when speaking to an elder or boss. In Japanese, we call them by their last name and add "san".

SELF CA
“A lot of the times people tell me ‘Just be happy!’ But often what I’m seeking is not actuallyhappiness for joy per say, but rather an inner state of peace of mind . . . ” From both of our upbringings, our mothers made it clear that our bodies are our homes and we should cherish them. It was simple, daily rituals that were unspoken.

LET'S TALK GRAPHIC DESIGN 12
CONVERSATION
Giavana: I don’t feel like the subject of negative impact is talked about with degree project that often because it’s typically about how you want to make a positive impact or dissect a subject. Nana: Let’s be real, we’re expected to spend 15+ on one 5hr class and if we add up the math, 45+ thats almost 2 full days of not sleeping, +other liberal arts class +regular jobs, +personal life, +self reflecting. It is unrealistic. G: But over the semester, Nana and I would often have late night conversations about the way graphic design has been affecting our mental health . . . More often than not we will prioritize getting work done over our physical and mental health. N: Then we start thinking of what we can do to channel that energy into something that we are passionate for outside of graphic design a perfectionist and being hard on ourselves we constantly remind each other that gd isn’t life or death. G: It's not the end of the world if one of our projects is 10 pixels off or projects don’t turn out how we envision. N: We still struggle with all of this but having to remind each other really helps through this process.

SECOND° FASHION AS A TOOL FOR SELF-EXPRESSION
NARROWING OUR TOPIC Our topic sprouted out of conversations about the difficulty of self-care while being in Graphic Design. We knew expression was going to be the foundation of our dialogue, however, with a plethora of forms of self-expression, we needed a way to narrow it down to one we were passionate about. It was a combination of far-reaching ideas, brainstorming conversations with our friend Anna, and New York fashion week around the corner when it sparked and became obvious that fashion was going to be our topic.

CONVERSATION
Clothes and accessories are our second skin — this is the skin that we choose, we get to pick in however we like to express ourselves. Fashion can be utilitarian, we can pick out a shirt to suit our mood, or maybe to make a statement.

SHARED MOODBOARD ON PINTEREST Along the way of our research, we kept 3 mood boards going: fashion, references, and visuals. FASHION , stored images of pieces or collections that caught our eye, or broke out the box of conventional fashion practices. We gathered designers with unique stories/concepts and influencers who brainstorm on self-care and fashion in REFERENCES . Lastly, VISUALS sourced inspirations for design work.

INSPIRATION

SECOND° FASHION AS A TOOL FOR SELF-EXPRESSION
We draw a lot of inspiration by a lot of the same influencers, designers, artists. By sending each other our daily inspirations, conversation sparked as we analyze why it is we follow these people. Self-expression is a part of our identity and the way we want to represent ourselves to other people in society. Over the years, we have tried to channel our personality through the ways we present ourselves, whether in real life, or digitally online. We have used social media to help express ourselves, specifically using Instagram, the lens through photography, taking advantage of its visually stimulating interface, which we both find appealing.

RESEARCH
Q+A Q+A Q+A
The research portion of the project included a series of open-ended response Q+As to several groups of people. As two people who saw clothing as a creative outlet apart from graphic design, it prompted our initial goal in having a deeper insight on peoples outlook on what fashion meant to them and if perhaps they felt the same.

Q+A(1)
In our first set of questions, we reached out to friends and contacted young fashion lovers through our social media accounts. We received approximately 50 responses. This helped give us a general understanding on where people stood in their personal choices for fashion. Our top three answers for the first question, “How would you explain your style in 3 words”? became a repeating factor throughout this portion of the research: comfortable, simple, and practical/functional. Question 2 and 3 deduced that the rhyme and reason for peoples daily routines in picking their outfit isn’t as clean-cut as some would think. Mood, weather, occasion, colors, and so on are all out into what helps better translate who people are and make them feel connected with their bodies.

2. How do you pick your outfits in the morning?
I pick my outfits depending on what my day is going to be like: if I have a presentation I need to wear my favorite outfit that empowers me, if I have an exam I wear something that makes me feel relaxed physically and in my mind, if I want to get eyes looking at me then I wear what makes me feel sexy.
In the morning I try I wear what I lay out not to wear the the night before same clothes I wore the past 2-3 days. I also try to coordinate my attire according to my mood and how I want to present myself on that specific day.
I usually choose my outfit depending on where I am going/who I will be seeing (for work, meetings, etc)
I pick my outfits Depending on depending on the weather and what I’m doing what colors I’m that day but still feeling focusing on being able to do anything in case something pops up. Or caring about if it’s going to rain or not as for my shoes.
I actually think about what to wear the night before lol it's one of the happy thoughts i have before sleeping haha
I pick them with ease. Usually doesn’t take much for me to decide because I’ m always in a hurry. I coordinate my clothes with first item I grab. Coordinate as I dress.
I pick my outfits accordingly to the day’s occasion. Most days I pick jeans because they’re cute, but they’re also thick and warm for this freezing winter. Pockets and accessories are mandatory!
I live in NY, where the weather is unpredictable so I look at the weather forecast and depending on that I pick my clothes. Comfort always comes first for me because I usually study during the week.
I usually have one item that I already want to wear on that day (usually the night before), and I coordinate through it depending on my mood, weather, and the occasion.
Usually think of where Im going then I decide whether pants skirt or dress. I choose my top depending on the color of my pants or skirt
First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is to look at the weather from my window. The weather determines if I should wear skirts or pants. On a rainy day I would usually wear casual without a choice but when the sun is blinding you I would try to avoid it. Sometimes I’m just feeling black so I would match the makeup with the outfit.
i pick my outfits in the morning based on color and comfort mostly
i usually start by On the weekdays picking a shoe i I choose my want to wear and bottoms first go from there. since I’m not supposed to wear denim at work & then I go from there!! Weekends I like to wear what I can’t wear Monday to Friday
I typically put first, i pick shoes them together at of the day and night. I look at match my outfit the weather and with the shoes what I’m doing the next day and then go from there.
whatever feels comfortable and makes me feel good about my appearance that day
I look at the weather and think about what pieces the people I'm seeing that day have seen me wearing recently... So I try not to wear the same shirt or jeans as last time they saw me.
I pick based primarily on the weather, and then I think about what kind of activities I am going to be doing. If I'm presenting in a class or I will be around people I enjoy being with, I will dress nicer. If I'm lounging at home I'll wear the comfiest clothes possible. Also weird but I dress based on how clean I am...? Like the better/cleaner I feel the better I typically dress myself.
Depending on the weather an whether I’ve washed my ha or not and how much time I h haha. Having m skin look good my hair clean makes me wan to look cuter o certain days th others. Idk if that’s weird lo but yeah.
3. Why do you feel like it’s important to dress in the way you do?
It’s important because it directly effects my confidence and helps me reach the desired outcome of the day (whether it is making an impression or simply being comfortable enough to run around during a 12 hour work day)
I believe it is of great import to dress the way I do since it represents who I am in terms of how I look on the surface. With that being said, most times first impressions are forever; therefore, I try to dress presentable on any occasion since you never know when you’ll encounter someone special or important.
Bc a boring tshirt is a waste of fabric and also, it's the most fun and free way to express yourself without having to say anth or interact w anyone so I love that.
It represents who you are, what you’re into. If everyone wears the same clothes it will be so boring because everyone is expressing the same fashion. Fashion these days is dead, because it’s all the same recycled crap. With big goofy shoes and a chest rig. When a chest rig becomes fashionable you know it’s over.
It’s important to dress the way I do because it represents who I am. It makes me feel good when I have my best outfit on. Even when I have to wear something occasional, it sets the right mood and mind set for whatever I have to do for the day. Being confident about myself helps me with my overall motivation.
I think it’s important to dress in the way I do because fashion is a way to express myself and although I love comfort, I also love to be fashionable at the same time. It’ s nice to be able to do both at the same time:)
I always add a pop of color to my outfits and this is important to me because it cheers me up. Having bright colors lifts my mood to a better place :) also I love mixing vintage& modern items because I despise matching with other people, this is the best way to avoid it lol
2 reasons: (1) I always wear highwaisted bottoms because Im short. (2) The way that I dress also shows my personality.
its important cause i want to dress good but be comfortable at the same time hahah
i feel like it’s important because it’s one of the ways i express myself. you can sometimes tell which type of mood i am in just based on the way i dress.
I feel it’s important to show that ALL body types can wear what they want whether it’s tight, loose, bold, or boring!!! Everyone should love & embrace their bodies no matter the size! I think others think that if you have curves it’s not okay to wear some loose not necessarily formfitting... BUT I want to show that you CAN!! (If that makes sense?)
Because it’s my main source of physical creativity and it’s important for me to bring that to life.
I like dressing a bit peculiarly because I tend to get positive comments when I do. I don’t think I look very good when I wear modern fashion trends.
I feel like it is most true to myself and it also makes me feel good. I am very attracted to both sexy clothing and menswear which are entirely opposite spectrums but if I can find something that I think I would look good in and present myself that way, it's best.
Because it sho off my personality an what I find aesthetically pleasing. I also think it genera makes other people feel happier or mo comfortable because I wear bright and sof colors.
4. How old were you when you first started picking your own outfits?
From 9 years old I finally got to have my own room and closet. I’m sure i still chose some things before but from 9 years old, I was choosing 100% of my outfits
I think I was a 3rd grader when I started picking for my own
Probably in the 1st grade honestly
13?
i think i started when i was 15/16, but when i finished high school i started designing my own clothes so it was easier to pick out outfits from then on.
mmm, not sure. my mom probably didn’t let me start until about middle school. appearance was a very big thing to my mom, she wouldn’t allow me to go anywhere look unpresentable.
I started This is probably a 15.000 choosing my own better question outfits in for my mom! elementary bc Haha she’s told my mother had me I’ve always no idea what dressed myself. fashion, makeup, beauty products were. She couldn’ t even put my hair in a ponytail haha. So I became pretty experimental with fashion & makeup when I was maybe 11 years old.
It's important because I feel like people in my vicinity generally don't feel enough agency in "owning" their style of clothing... This also means that I feel like a lot of people seem uncomfortable in what they wear, physically and mentally. I think showing people that taking assumptions about style and modernity and using them not as rules but as inspiration is what I try to do. Probably 10
5. Have you ever felt like you dressed to please someone else? When?
I don’t know if it’s also pleasing, but I definitely dressed to impress guys and make girls feel like “ah, I want her outfit”
I have always dressed conformingly, whether I’ve been in high school, in college (to a degree lol) and especially now. I’ve never really had a selfdefining style and I still don’t think I do. So essentially I always try to dress to fit in, and “please” the ppl around me
I think so when I Yes, for a date or Never to please have a date night an event where I anyone but dress or want to look wanted to have a according to more put great first occasion I guess together than impression usual for certain occasions with people!
6. Where does your inspiration come from? Do you feel influenced?
Unconsciously, my style was mostly influenced by my mother. We choose completely different color ranges, but the style is almost identical. And French girls! Their outfits are so simply but are ALWAYS so stylish. It’s definitely in their genes.
90% of my style influence comes from Uniqlo ads lol I think I still have yet to really be involved in fashion and truly be interested in it, so I am still looking
My favorite I think how other blogger is people dress courtney shields where you live or & she is all the shops I buy about comfort my clothes from yet most stuff she wears is affordable! I am definently influenced by her because her style is similar to mine! I also find inspiration in many other bloggers who will show multiple ways to wear an item! Lastly, I feel influenced by trends that are currently thriving! Like statement prices! Love those!

extra at times
I pick it out depending on what I’m doing for the day. If I’m going to work, I make sure I’m wearing something comfortable enough to be in for 8 hours but also nothing too expensive or fancy so if I get it dirty it’s okay. I also try to wear something low cut st work since I bartend and make better money that way. If I’m going to a show, I wear bright colors and lots of fishnets and pasties because it’s super hot and I love standing out in the crowd that way I usually try to I feel like I think it’s It’s a visual It’s important flatter my body everyone wants important to representation of because it’s a type first before comfort dress in the way I who I am and a way of self anything. If it’s including myself do because its a form of creativity expression. That’ cute, it’s a bonus. especially if you’ choice I can s how you As of now I try to re wearing the make present yourself dress in what is same thing all to the world in a deemed as day. College small way “acceptable” here, students especially look but I try to insert for comfort in other things like jewelry, shoes, etc. what they wear but also that make the sometimes want outfit a little bit different. Business to vamp their casual in japan vs look up a little! I feel that it’s America is so important to different lol express myself & make a statement with things I wear!
I don’t remember I think fifth grade How old were you Prob around 5th I was probably 7! exactly but I when you first grade cuz that is around 7th grade. would say 3rd or started picking when I really In elementary I 4th grade? your own outfits? sarted to come only wore track out of my shy suits and I got shell hah shit from Hanaka, and she said that I need to change my fashion lmao. That summer I gradually changed it and when i entered middle school it made me opened up to a bigger world of not only fashion but a world of socializing. I started wearing skater clothes from there but it was mostly those clothes you see where every 12-13 year olds wear. (D.C, Monster, von zipper etc.)
You hahaha , Instagram , brands I like , definitely influenced but a mix of everything not just from one source
I think in 5th I think 3. Both my grade was when I parents are started being stylish and that’s more picky with probably why I what I wore. love coordinating outfits from such a young age!
Lisa Lee
Iris Barefoot
Definitely. Just the other week when I visited my sister in GA, she demanded me to send all the outfits I was wearing to see her. She told me I shall not walk with her publicly inappropriately dressed. I sent her this zebra dress that went all the way to my ankles and she flat out said no. I couldn’t even wear any patterns to her school. She finally let me wear one outfit for the night but that was the only exception. I also feel like you wear clothing around someone you want to please? Wouldn’t anyone want too on their first date? If you want a good impression with anything such as your job interview, party or social media, you would most likely try to please the When it comes to Yes I get My inspiration Nana Lmao Instagram, on the instagram and Instagram for other person on dressing myself I influenced comes from honestly thooo. streets, friends. shops like zara. sure. Yes definitely, i try not to but in the end it is unavoidable that it's in the basis of the psychology of dressing. When? I don't think I do anymore most of the time but that feeling of looking good is always there and that connects back to pleasing other ppl or rather, to be noticed or seen.
I’ve never really felt that way. I always stayed true to what I wanted to wear. I never owned any supreme, balenciaga or even Jordan’s. I just thought it wasn’t me. When everyone else wore Jordan’s and supreme etc. I was the only one who owned Drop Dead or some shit
Yes. When my parents still wanted me to be born as a boy. They gave me a mushroom hair cut and boyish clothes. I hated how people thought I was a boy and called me out for it at the age of 6.That was not my own intention
Till I was in High School, definitely my mom because we had different tastes in fashion. Now, I do feel like, especially when you’re a part of a something, like for me, I’m in a skating team in my university, I feel like there’s the certain standard where I can’t wear hoodies and sweats outside of my dorm.
Yes. When I went I tend to dress on dates w/ guys I nice when Im liked lol you just showing first start to wonder if impression to your fashion whoever I meet. sense is alright haha

personally, i think fashion is like putting the puzzle together. each piece is unique so each person has a different outcome that expresses oneself.
I would say around 9 or so?
This is a super 10.000 weird question for me as I first dressed myself when I was 8 or so. But I only really started to think about fashion and what it says about me when I was around 19 or 20.
i’ve never really i don’t think so. i cared about dress for myself, dressing to not anyone else. please someone else tbh like i said i like to dress for comfort so its really about pleasing myself.
Oh 100% I feel like I used to dress to please someone else. I still do in a sense.. Bc I’ll wear something my husband likes AND I like on our dates! (Bc ya girl wants some ;) .. you don’t have to include that if you don’t want too )
Hmmm I don’t Not to please but Definitely, for think so. There’s draw attention dates and for been times family parties where people have asked me why I’m always ‘so dressed up’ and I’ve never really let it bother me since I just love to play dress up!
Yes of course-- in I do feel like I middle school dress to please when I wanted to quite a bit. Social wear Hollister settings and all that. mandate my style of dress almost all the time. However, I think I am actually my own worst enemy when it comes to not letting myself try something out. Anything more suggestive or girly I tend to stay away from because it's not in my comfort zone.
Only when I’m back home in india. I feel pressured to dress a little b more conservatively on the other extreme a lot fancier, when a want is to be comfy and fee like myself. Ye it’s really annoying I end up wearing a l of my old clothing and stuff that’s no my style anymore. And I don’t fee confident or lik myself. It’s like lmao if I wann wear somethin off the shoulde or show cleava or wear a cute dress I should able to. Like wh is that anyone else’s busines
my inspiration would be my partner at my store, he’s a lot older than i am and in terms of clothing and even designing clothes i get a lot of inspiration from him!i can say im definitely influenced one way or another
I feel inspired daily bc what people wear here in Japan. Taking public transport is eye opening as to what’s in fashion or what looks nice. I also like to use the WEAR app (location set to japan) to see everyday women post their outfits!
Streetstyle, print Mostly from my magazines, mood, something Pinterest, current from Instagram trends. I find inspiration everywhere, it really is in everything. Textures, colors, people. I’m definitely influenced! It’s hard not to be you know? You just gotta follow the inspiration that leads you to elevate that idea and make it your own - not copy what you’re inspired by.
My inspiration is mostly from my older sister, who has a great eye for buying single pieces that look like they fit together with her closet. Thats pretty much the only inspiration I've had-- our styles are still quite different.
Pinterest, from my friends, instagram trends, and I’m mostly driven colors that I really like and comfortable clothing.
i get a lot of my inspiration from sports culture. about 80% of my wardrobe is sports influenced.
My inspiration comes from the 80s and from the general fashion trends in agricultural circles (kind of crunchy, lots of jeans and corduroy and thrift store clothes). My favorite article of clothing right now is a jean jacket my mom gave me that she used to wear in the 80s
My inspiration most comes from my brother, especially at a young age. After that, I started loving to look at streetwear and really weird styles of clothing. I am definitely influenced by others around me, especially those I love. However, I try to stay true to my own style.

I pick my outfits My outfits are based on picked usually feelings or music the day prior I am listening to. since I don’t have ample time to decide. My work clothes usually have a routine, so they are picked accordingly to the outfits that usually go well. Also the weather is a big factor so I will pick first deciding if I want to wear short sleeved or long sleeved tops and then I just wear pants or skirts depending on the weather.
I sometimes have an idea the night before if there is a certain event or commitment but if I am going to work, I usually grab one piece that speaks to me in the moment and work an outfit around that. I don't think getting ready should be complicated and I don't give myself a lot of time in the morning because sleep is more important to me. If I am feeling lazy, accessories like earrings or a hat go a long way!
i usually have a piece that i'm loving for a while, ie a new pair of pants or an old t shirt i've rediscovered. so most mornings my outfits start with that piece! i wear a lot of high waisted bottoms and long skirts/dresses, so figuring out what kind of silhouette i'm going for that day is always important for me. i keep it pretty simple most days, and my closet is all very neutral, so a lot of my pieces go well together. i'm a huge outfit repeater, so if i'm ever stuck i go back through my fav outfits (one of the main reasons i have an 'ootd' highlight!) and pick one that i remember loving!
How I pick my outfits. I am a STEM major and my goal in life is to be in the health field. My field does not allow a lot if creative freedom so that’ s where fashion comes in. I go to school Monday through Friday so I try to dress casual and comfortable because I know I have a long and tiring day ahead of me. I would leave my house wearing a pair of nike leggings and a warm sweater since the Bay Area is generally cold. Weekends is where I get more creative. Weekends are reserved for seeing and hanging out with friends so I put more effort in my look because majority of the week I dress pretty casual; its the 2 days of the week I can look “extra.” I first look outside and check the weather so that I can dress appropriately. I think of where I am going that day and try to come out with an outfit that would match the scenery around me. If I’m going downtown, I try to go for more of a streetwear or chic look.
I pick different outfits for different occasions. If I’m going to the hospital for work, I wear minimal and more of a polished look. If I’ m hanging out with friends I pick edgier streetwear fashion.
it depends on the morning and what i’m doing that day! recently i’ve been picking my outfits around my pants because i’ve come into some cool pants lately, so i’ll pick what pants i want to wear and then craft an outfit around it. i always look at the weather in the morning and also have to be aware what i’m doing— if i have work or a technical production class i need clothes i am not obsessed with so i can get dirty, etc
Foremost I think about what I’m comfortable in, then I consider the weather, then I think about what shoes would work for my activity/ outfit.
Typically I try to envision the outfit the night before so I don’t waste too much time in the morning getting ready. I like to center my outfit around my shoes.
I usually think of I pick my outfits Check the the clean clothes based on the weather and I I have and I put weather first, just grab what's an outfit occasion second, in my closet that together in my mood third fits the weather head so I can and toss it on stay in bed longer
I have basic assortment of shirts and pants so I pick one from each drawer and go about the day
I don’t want to be the same as others. I wear what i want to wear and be satisfied
’m very interested in expression. I think fashion is a very quick way to express myself.
I think at this point, I do not really have a choice since I work in a corporate setting, where looks really matter
Wearing certain clothes does a lot for me.. it changes my mood, it shares certain memories, and makes me feel good! The importance is also that it's my hobby, my work and I enjoy every aspect of getting dressed.
personally, it's really important to dress the way i do because i finally feel comfortable with my style and with my body. ive been trying to find a style that felt special to me, and also that made me feel confident. it's hard sometimes to follow trends that just aren't you, or just don't flatter your body/make you feel good, ive definitely been there! trusting and embracing my style makes shopping (thrifting) so much more fun, because i get this rush everytime i see something and think "that's so me!". in terms of social media and society in general, i hope that dressing the way i do can help other people find their own personal styles, or atleast give them the confidence to try new things! i think it's really cool when people with completely different styles from me compliment my outfit or a piece i'm wearing!
It’s important for me to dress up because its my way to have some creative freedom in my life. Dressing up and showing off your style shows others what kind of person you are and that you care about looking your best. Id rather stand out and look completely weird than blend into the monotone colors I see everyday. Everyone is unique and its important to show your uniqueness whether its our fashion, work, etc…
Tbh I’m not bold with fashion, and don’t really follow trends. I just wear whatever I find aesthetically pleasing and that I think fits my personality.
I definitely feel like the way I dress is pretty ingrained in my personality at this point and it just makes me feel more me! it makes my brain feel more connected with my body
I think dress is important because it’s people’s first impression of you. As horrible as it sounds I often feel that my physical appearance gets me through the door of different opportunities, and dressing to a certain degree enables that.
It’s important that I dress the way I do because i feel like it best illustrates who I am. The pieces I put together are usually put together with care and thought.
Dressing the way I do is important to me because it’ s another way to express myself and show my personality and also making myself feel good
I feel like I’m a different person when I don’t dress like myself. It puts me in a totally different mood
I try and keep my clothes understated, form fitting, and simple enough so that I don't have to think about what I'm wearing or what people think about what I'm wearing. I have enough going on, I try to dress to free my mind to think on other things while staying presentable at the office, school, or wherever I go during the day
I dress casually but neat for my work which isn’t very appropriate for dressed up attire I mostly get hair in my clothes since I'm a barber.
6th grade
As early as I can remember
As far as I remember, it probably started sometime in 4th grade. My mother used to dress me up usually, but once I separated rooms with my brother and I got my own closet, that is when I started coordinating my own outfits. But if you know me, you know how choosy I am and how long it takes for me to decide on an outfit, so I am sure my mom was an advisor to ensure I had clothes decided for the next day.
I was probably around 6. I attended a private school and wore a uniform from Kindergarten to Grade 12. My weekends and the occasional dress down days at school were extremely important to me as I felt like I never was able to fully express myself through style on a daily basis. Uniforms made it easy to get ready but I used to dress them up by wearing pins on my kilt and changing my hair style
ive been picking out my outfits for as long as i can remember! i'm an only child, so i never really had hand-medowns or anything to share with people. my clothes were always so fun to pick out and dress up in! i started dancing when i was really young, around 2-3, so costumes and weird over the top outfits were my entire life! i think that dress-up aspect has stuck with me throughout my life and my style journey. i also started thrifting at a young age, because we didn't have much money. im so glad i was exposed to that experience so young because that has definitely had a huge impact on my style and ethos today! i love trying new styles, silhouettes, and textures.
I first really go into fashion my junior Around 11 (I year in high school. Before then, I was think… I don’t a bit chubby and the clothes I wanted really remember) to wear only had small sizes. This encouraged me to improve my health and lose the weight and once I did, I was able to buy clothes that actually fit me. From there on, I began styling myself and I went through so many trends. From hipster, to girly, to edgy, etc…
can’t remember honestly but probably elementary school sometime? i know when i first started like really trying to wear good clothes was probably 5th or 6th grade. i didn’t care about my appearance until like high school tho tbh
I believe I was in That’s a great kindergarten. question.... When I was very probably once I young I refused was in first or to wear anything second grade? that wasn’t a dress. Then I became a “tom boy” from grades 1-12 and mostly refused anything that was not pants. I started caring about what I wore during my sophomore year of university. Prior to then, I was always a “jeans and a tee shirt” person.
I was around 10 years old
I would say about 6. But my mom often demanded that I go back into my room and change into something less weird until about 16
I was a kid. Very vivid memories of throwing a fit when my mom or dad to dress me. They also never felt the need to dress me as I've always liked clothes as a kid. So they just trusted me and I wore whatever ithougght was right. They agreed most of the time
since I was in maybe 1st 2nd grade no one really told me what to wear I just picked up what was available and looked fairly unkept as a child lol
no
In Tokyo, not as much. Florida was definitely a different story. Exposure of skin was much more accepted over in that side of the world, so when I would go out to bars and parties, I definitely did dress to please myself and others around me
No, I have always felt that if I like something, I'll wear it and it's that simple. I don't always need a second opinion on if I should buy or wear something. If I don't feel comfortable, I won't wear it because I dress for myself and I am the one in the clothes
grades 5-9 were probably when i felt most pressure to impress others with my clothes. social media was becoming more popular at my school and i had my first crush. those things made me feel really pressured to look "cute" or "hot" and also like i had more money than i actually did. i ditched my eccentric thrifted outfits for a pair of tights or short-shorts and a branded t shirt. i looked like everybody else, and i feel like that put a lot of pressure on my body to make my clothes look good (which is never fun when you're going through puberty!)
I never felt like I had to dress for Yes. Mostly with anyone besides for myself. Growing my mom. She up my mom always told me to do tells me to dress things for yourself and never let other more feminine dictate what you should do. When and “ladylike” you do something to please another, you lose a bit of yourself and your sense of direction. Your outlook is now to conform to what the person is saying you should do and this can lead to a really dark path. It’s hard when you’re a first generation asian American and all your life your family is telling you what to do or how to act, but sometimes you have to just ignore and do what you want. The generational gap is huge in terms of mindset and goals. If I dress up, I’m dressing up for myself and only myself. It gives not only confidence but it empowers me and it shows in the way I walk and talk. I think it’s important to walk your own path and not let others dictate what you do because it’s not going to make up happy at the end of the day. When I dress myself up, it also makes me proud that I’m able to come up with that clothing combo and gives me a sense of pride and uniquenessIf someone says I look weird or it doesn’ t look good, I don’t pay them any attention because each person has their own opinion on what looks good and what doesn’t. Beauty is subjective, and what one person thinks isn’t going to influence how I’ m gonna dress myself.
i felt that way more in high school, that i was trying to stand out in a sense with my clothes, but i kind of discovered dressing myself as a way to make me feel good and never went back
I had a boyfriend that wouldn’t let me wear the color red. He would actually tell me to change if I were wearing certain colors. That stands out to me the most. But aside from that, I will “dress to please” for people I care about if I know they like a certain thing or if I want to especially please them by looking cute by my own interpretation.
Yes - if I go on a nice date, or have an interview or special event I try to dress nicely dress and heels (to a certain degree). I don’t change who I am when I dress ‘up’ though - I just boss up to the next level
Yes lol men. Especially when I go out to clubs I would love to dress how I usually dress but I still care about what men think of me in those spaces. I feel I should dress extra feminine or at least my version of feminine
The only time I can think of is when my college bf thought it would be cute if we wore matching workout outifts. Complete with matching his and hers capris and those weird toe shoes. #relationshipgoa ls #powercouple
Definitely, I used to all the time. Early 20's for sure, but started to care less as I got older. I guess why I wanted to may be similar to many people. Wanting to fit in with a certain crowd. For me that was creatives (which were always older than me) so I want to dress in a way that they thought "yeah he knows what's up"
I have tried to dress to please a potential date in the past. But mostly for myself if I feel like dressing up it isn’t for anyone else. Sometimes to see the faces of other ppl
My inspiration comes from Various artworks and artists. I’m very interested in minamalism. I do feel influenced!
The people in my office are quite fashionable, so I definitely get influenced from them. Compared to American business casual, Japan is definitely more conservative, so trying to blend in with this countries standard is how I get influenced by my peers.
My style is honestly a bit all over the place because as a person, I am gravitated to lot of different things that may be from opposite spectrums. Lately, my inspiration comes from runway, menswear, Japanese street style magazines and Instagram style pages. I do feel influenced but I am able to make it my own or cross connect two different trends or styles.
a lot of my inspiration comes from vintage fashion, since i thrift the majority of my clothes and also sell vintage full-time as my job! the rest of my inspiration comes from instagram/vogue runway. ive always tried to only follow accounts that actually inspire me, and i have a lot of collections for style and thrifting inspo. i get a lot of style inspiration from people like @sarahshabacon @wearilive @bjonesstyle @alyssainthecity and @nycbambi ! it's a nice mix of vintage and high fashion in my feed. i look to these accounts, as well cool indie brands, for thrifting inspo more than outfit inspo. i look for similar cuts, fabrics, details like button's, etc! for vogue runway, i love finding runway looks that feel like an elevated version of my style, and trying to pinpoint what i love about that look so i can try and incorporate it into a future outfit.
My inspiration comes from a multitude of things. From architecture buildings, to everyday items, to the countries I visit, to my friends and family. When I was in Paris, I saw beauty within the lines and windows of the Parisian buildings and I was able draw inspiration on what outfit I wanted to put together. Going to Tokyo, I saw a heavy emphasis on city life so I used that to put together a street wear look. Even looking at my drapes gives me inspiration on what I want to wear that day. Inspiration can come in all forms, not just from other people and thats something we forget. Take a look at Virgil Abloh. He started off as a civil engineer and then architect before becoming the famous icon he is today. His widely popular belt (the yellow one that looks like caution tape) was inspired by everyday items like construction tape in which he was probably used to seeing from his previous jobs (that related to his majors). Many things inspire me and I hope that one day I can inspire others as well.
honestly my biggest inspiration is the people i’m around! truly my biggest influence is my twin sister i think she dresses so cool and has put me on to really awesome clothes. i literally didn’t even think about jewelry until i noticed her wearing cute earrings one time and i was like earrings... are a thing? we have really different clothing styles and dress very differently but i take a lot of inspo from her. also i think thrift stores can be really inspirational and i get a lot of ideas from just hitting urban renewal once in a while
I know I’m influenced by the people around me and the people I follow on Instagram. I spend a lot of time with people whose fashion sense fascinates me and their creativity definitely inspires me.
My inspiration for fashion comes from years of looking at magazines vogue, elle, fashion blogs and creating mood boards. Before I went into illustration I was seriously considering photography, because of my draw to fashion photography. I think everyone is influenced to a certain degree from their surroundings. I try to not oversaturate my feed, and love taking inspiration from nature specifically botanicals. I stop by a lot of flower shops in my morning commute and gather some reference photos for color and shape.
My inspiration comes from music. Ex. If I’m really into a punk album one week I’ll dress in darker baggy clothes n wear heavy boots. But I definitely feel influenced by following musicians on Instagram. If already a fan of the way the express themselves musically, I find easy to get into the way they express themselves through clothing.
I feel like my style is influenced by the 90’s, pinterest, and the British royal family... in no particular order
Influence in recent years has come from architecture lol. I like clean following lines and silouettes. Understated but detailed. i don’t have much influence or inspiration. I try to eliminate as many steps and accessories to not feel like a complicated dresser. I like minimalism in particular aspects of my life

I pick my outfits depending on what my day is going to be like: if I have a presentation I need to wear my favorite outfit that empowers me, if I have an exam I wear something that makes me feel relaxed physically and in my mind, if I want to get eyes looking at me then I wear what makes me feel sexy.

REFLECTION: We wanted to dive even deeper. This brought us to our second set of questions which was geared to MassArt students. Some of the questions overlapped in order for us to compare with the first questionnaire. We received a much wider range of answers in people describing their personal styles; answers ranged from 90’s to boho to even Zoe101, and of course, comfort once again. One answer from Mel T for question 3, “How has your style changed since you came to MassArt”? was a notable summarization for the evolution of style. She hit all the points in stating how at MassArt, she become more comfortable in what she wore, more experimental in what suited her, mature, and financially independent which had her search for cheaper ways of shopping such as thrifting.
37
For us, we felt a shift in our personal styles going to MassArt. It was "normal" to be playful with clothing, experiment and not worry about wanting to fit in. We have always viewed clothing as a tool for self-expression, but MassArt was a space where we felt the most comfortable doing that.

MEL T. My style has changed so much at MassArt!! I took a lot of cues from fellow students — I came to understand the balance between daring statement pieces and good quality basics. I started really thrifting and became even more playful than I was in high school. There was an interesting sort of “MassArt uniform” that I was initially drawn to all black, cropped skinny pants + a good pair of Doc Martens. I tried to do that for a lil while, but have since adapted and evolved the look to be unique to me!

Q+A(3)
In our first set of questions, we reached out to friends and contacted young fashion lovers through our social media accounts.

5. What's your favorite way to showcase you work?
I think that the clothes that I wear are a lot simpler than my designs. Also, my target market is very different from who I am so I think that contributes to it. I try to keep my wardrobe pieces that are simple and wearable every single day, usually all black. My designs are much more expressive in embellishments and details, alot more glitter and shiny bits and bobs What I create is a lot bolder and than what i actually wear. To an brighter than what I tend to wear, but extent what I design is my wardrobe I’m definitely not afraid to wear with alot more glam and more bright colors myself. I tend to design eccentric. things that are a bit more unconventional but still wearable What I create tends to be more sustainable recently with use of older textiles and well I don’t wear any of that I create, but I still have a sustainable mindset with what I wear.

I try to be more risky with the things I I like doing photo shoots and create. I tend to wear basic clothes on runways when I have the chance. a day to day basis but I try to go out of my comfort zone with my designs.
Maybe an app to show up and coming designers to upload their work and actually be seen.
What I create is so ideal to my taste but I work two jobs and don’t have much of an income so my style is more limited for me right now. My style right now is very minimalistic and I wear what I feel comfortable in my designs all celebrate the female but I’m okay with that it since it (and on rare occasion male) form with surprises people with what I’m revealing silhouettes that accentuate creating and my work can speak for the curves and shape of the body. Traditionally looks would be showcased on a runway but I think we could evolve from that. Maybe some sort of app would be neat, but like I said before some way that you can see the look in action.

My number one choice was F I applied to FIT and you have to do a industrial City living, and the streets your collection, they take like 3 mont know where you’re going, that’s whe found out I got in there way before I really felt a connection here, I felt so accept when I found out I got in. And also I was really happy that I chose M making fashion robots. Like you go i a lot too. Like, I get to work with pain the idea of meeting so many differen craft by seeing how other people do
SO YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO So when I was growing up, I knew I a stigma against little boys drawing d channel that. So when I was very yo high school and people started apply wanted to go and I remember just try piece together different types of cloth that’s how I went to sleep at night. I and I really loved that and then that in my head and then it became more So then I started interning at high en Marc Allen, which is a luxury mensw wear, that’s my main thing. But I also formed and how I could use that in m already in college. But before college different styling of gowns and I really fashion runway show that I did with a of started everything officially becau pipe dream, it was something I serio that a bit because I was a little afraid up I realized that this is what I really

SSART? chools in high school, I knew I really wanted to go for fashion bout fashion schools in New England, in the country, or in the FIT in New York City and the my second was MassArt. Then, a whole collection for them and mine was inspired by of New York. They took forever to respond. After you submit nths tell you if you got in. When you’re already supposed to en you found out. So then, I applied to MassArt as well and found out about FIT. So I came and saw the school and omething really powerful when I came here so I decided to d then I found out I got into FIT which was like... great... but MassArt because FIT is very business oriented, find of in and pushed back out. I like the idea of collaboration here nters for textiles and whatnot and graphic designers.i liked nt disciplinarians. And I’ve learnt so much about my own o theirs, not even in fashion
O DO FASHION FROM THE START? wanted to do fashion. Any art I was drawn to but there was dresses so then I thought, I’ll find somewhere else to oung I thought I wanted to do architecture. So when I got to ying to colleges and people were talking about where they ying to fall asleep one night and I remember I started to just thing and fabrics together in my head on a dress form and really liked what I thought of so then the next day I drew it really started everything. It was just something I thought of e real, and I started to make those into real, tangible things. madeI did you an go to Massart / at choose Art school? nd boutiques with custom What clothing. internship
wear. I do some menswear but I love doing women’s evening art school part was pretty o wanted to learn how theThe structure of menswear was given but Massart was less so. I’d be lying if I said Massart was my first choice. I was thinking on New york schools because I am from connecticut, my womenswear so I started to train there but initially that was which is a little close to new york. For the reason that is a public school and I come from a single ge I did a lot of internships with gowns, selling and doing mom household, this school was the most easiest and optimal. And then when I visited when y loved that. My senior collection in high school was a the new york schools weren’t an option I ended up falling in love with the culture and how um I all my garments that I learned how to create. That was kind probably wouldn’t have it any other way going to a new york school vs massart cause how use that show was proving to my parents that this wasn’t a massart incorporates fashion and fine arts is something that I really like within my work. I like to ously wanted to pursue… so here I am. I kind of repressed draw, to paint, and I’m interested in photography and performance, and all those things I feel d to go into fashion when I was really young. After growing like I wouldn’t be able to have the same kind of experience without being so, and have people y wanted to do. be so accepting of you crossing over, exploring different mediums. When did you know you wanted to do fashion design? Thats been always before I can even remember. My parents actually met as buyers in the fashion industry so, I feel like it’s kind of just been genetically me but also when I was younger for gym even I refused to wear pants I use to cry and make my own sport games, and I would just not have it tell my mom choose what I was wearing I would always wear whatever I wanted. Even if I was made fun of how I would dress because I would dress obviously different but it made me really happy and I kind of knew that what what i was wearing was wearing was more than myself. Even when I was younger I would hand sew clothes for my barbie dolls, and my cats etc do weird things like that. It was always a part of me. In middle especially I feel like you’re in such susceptible time to being in changed what people think and say of you, I remember at one period of time I tried to normalize myself and dress how other people are dressing I found myself a lot sadder and not happy with myself. Emotionally I didn’t have the easiest in my life so clothes and wearing something kind of out there was a way for me to have people comment more on what I’m wearing instead of asking how I am and in some ways how i theorize it, it’s always been like a cover up, but also something that makes me feel good. Do you feel more comfortable at massart? I definitely do. It's interesting to be in a place where you are not like the only one. Of course i had friends in high school that appreciate in how I dressed but in high school I made this red skirt and first time I wore it to school and someone in the hallway was would say “what the fuck are you wearing” and I was thinking in my head I’m like oh I made this. And when I wore it to massart for the first time, everyone’s like oh that’s so cool, its really unique. Much more supportive community. Those negative comments never really stopped me per say I feel like it would always make me fueled to think that I’m doing okay with myself and something that makes me different. It’s definitely a lot more accepting and its nice to be around similar thought processes

VENT: MFA GENDER ENDING XHIBITION MFA EVENT
3/15/19 We attended a proud MFA Late Night where they held a late night opening party for the Gender Bending Fashion Exhibit. People roamed the museum dressed in all colors, textures, and shapes while the sound of local musicians filled the air. People from all backgrounds were intertwined with one another in the space; it was by far one of the most diverse events we had attended in Boston. This night became an watershed in our project and a prime example of a gathering we would want to see come out of what ended up creating. The night became a catalyst for our design inspiration as we moved into the next segment of the project, design and deliverables.

After weaving through a list of potential names, we landed on Second°. How? ‘Second’ refers to our second layer of skin; it’s the layer we chose to showcase to the world, but more importantly, ourselves. The ‘°’ is a marker of how fashion, expression, and people are ever-changing… just like the weather.

COLOR & TEXTURE We derived our colors and texture inspiration from the MFA Gender Bending opening party night. Bright, bold, and unafraid is how we like to describe it. High contrast imagery, texture, and typography are juxtaposed in a similar fashion to how clothing is layered.

TYPOGRAPHY Versatility was a must in our type choices; we sought out typefaces that were adaptable for both web design and print.

Moving forward, we faced design challenges as we approached making the interview pages for the designers and photographers… our type choices and the work of the creators were not aligning. We soon learnt that the idiosyncrasies of each designer and creator wasn’t meant to mold to the typefaces we initially selected. This is where we decided to widen our horizons with typefaces in order for us to communicate in the same language as the creators’ work. Each designer was given a typeface specific and complimentary to their style and work while our initial typefaces we let do the work outside of the creator’s details.

FINAL POSTER Our poster was an amalgamation of our design scheme, objectives, and visual language. Bright, lustrous fabric sets the background while a collection of key words are making a literal “breakthrough” the cloth. These key words set the foundation for Second°. In motion, the model wears a piece by Ji Won Choi. Born in Seoul, and raised in the midwest, the heart of her work focuses on using design as a tool to connect cultures and promoting positive change. The piece featured on our poster addresses excessivism, a visual representation of an average closet that seeks to change the status quo.
