SVSEF M ISSION S TATEMENT The SVSEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing exceptional snow sports programs for the youth of the Wood River Valley. The primary goals of our programs are to assist each participant in reaching his/her athletic potential, while developing strong personal character and positive values.
M ESSAGE F ROM T HE D EVELOPMENT D IRECTOR As we reflect on this past year, the Board and administration of the SVSEF are thankful, as always, for the generosity of our donors. Our budget was met, albeit adjusted to reflect our new economy. We produced successful fundraising events and we continued to build on our goal to achieve 100% participation by families and staff in the Annual Fund Drive. The goal to build the Endowment to $5 million is our next big endeavor. In the past year, we were thrilled to receive two pledges in excess of $500,000 towards this goal. Ultimately, the SVSEF hopes to build an Endowment of $5 Million to support our Scholarship needs. Approximately 15% of our families apply for, and receive, financial support for tuition and travel annually. This past season our scholarship support went from nearly $160,000 in ’09 to only $50,000 in ’10. This is directly attributed to our ability to raise money at the annual Fall Game Dinner and Janss Pro-Am events. By building the Endowment to $5 million we will be able to support all of our families who need financial assistance in a greater capacity, making winter snow sports a realistic endeavor for more of our valley’s youth. The SVSEF believes it can fulfill these goals and more because we consistently provide high-quality programs for our members. Starting in second grade and spanning post-grad years, SVSEF athletes represent the Wood River Valley locally, nationally, and internationally with work ethic, positive attitudes, and good sportsmanship that are admirable and enviable. In 2010, two current athletes and one alumni participated in the Vancouver Olympic Games. Our goal for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia is to double this number to six. In order to achieve these lofty goals, we will continue to provide the best training and competition opportunities to all of our athletes. None of this is possible without the support of our generous and loyal donors who believe in the mission of the SVSEF. To keep in touch with us, please bookmark our website: www.svsef.org. It is filled with information regarding our programs and of course is updated regularly throughout the competitive season with results, photos, and videos of our athletes’ amazing achievements. You can also follow us on Facebook by becoming a fan of the SVSEF (www.facebook.com/svsef). Please enjoy the following pages, which outline everything you may want or need to know about the SVSEF. We thank you for your support and look forward to yet another fabulous winter!

WHAT ARE SVSEF’S FUNDRAISING GOALS IN 2010-2011?
HOW DOES THE SVSEF USE MY DONATION?
Our goal for the coming season is to raise $500,000. We hope to achieve this through our Annual Fund Drive, the Fall Game Dinner, and the Janss Pro-Am. Additionally, we will strive to raise $100,000 for our scholarship programs which help to pay for tuition and travel expenses.
Annual Fund donations help support general operating costs of the SVSEF. These include program equipment and administrative support, facility expenses, vehicle maintenance, insurance (auto, liability, property, and Worker’s Compensation), utilities, and administrative costs. Our other primary fundraisers are the annual Fall Game Dinner and the Bill Janss Pro-Am.

M ESSAGE F ROM T HE E XECUTIVE D IRECTOR I don’t mean to sound cliché but last year was difficult in many ways. The recession hit the Wood River Valley in full force and the SVSEF, along with the rest of the Valley’s non-profits, did not escape its wrath. We’ve all had to adjust to the new reality - a reset. With that reset came many hard decisions and the need to reevaluate the programs and services offered by the SVSEF. All of these decisions centered on maintaining our number one priority: creating the best athlete – coach environment possible to support excellent athlete development. And further, we focused on what any changes would potentially do to that environment and relationship. With changes came some inevitable disappointment. It was impossible to keep everyone happy amidst a time of great adjustment and change. Yet, looking back at what was decided over a year ago, I would say the SVSEF has prospered and even excelled. I’m sure you are wondering why I chose to say that the SVSEF has “prospered,” given that we were experiencing a recession that some refer to as the “Great Recession.” I’m not speaking of prospering in terms of economics or finances but in terms of human relationships and productivity. As many services were reduced or cut, the immediate reaction was laced with confusion and the associated anger. Yet, with time and lots of communication came the creative reactions; “How do we solve this?” or “I have another idea,” and “What can I do to help?” Our community came together and solved many issues. This collaboration took place at every level and involved many groups with different agendas working together to find creative solutions - a true and honest example of teamwork. Coaches, parents, athletes, donors, and supporters remained positive, always looking at the glass as half full versus half empty. The best example of creative teamwork and problem-solving resulted from the decision to eliminate after-school transportation for the upper teams, a critical need for many families, but a very costly service for the SVSEF to provide, in excess of $15,000 per year. As I already stated, with the announcement to eliminate after-school transportation came confusion and anger; then came teamwork and a solution. Numerous ideas for after-school transportation were proposed. After evaluating all the proposals the Mountain Rides shuttle van program was selected. In a nutshell, Mountain Rides would provide a 15-passenger van, which would include all the operation costs (insurance, maintenance, gas, etc) for a set fee based on the estimated monthly driving miles, and the parents would be the drivers. Four Mountain Ride shuttle van pools were established, providing after school transportation for over 55 athletes. The parents had to form van pools, create a driving schedule for the year, fill all the driving shifts, and keep in constant communication throughout the year. Needless to say I had my concerns. Could parents keep the system working, getting athletes to and from training? There were so many potential ways for the system to fall apart. Through the winter, however, the parents were brilliant. There were no missed shifts, no breakdowns in communication, and the athletes always got to team on time. What could have become a huge negative costing numerous athletes the chance to participate last winter became a point of inspiration for the entire SVSEF community. The parents demonstrated team work, an ever-important foundation of the SVSEF. Their children, as well as the SVSEF, “prospered.” I’m looking forward to this coming season and more opportunities for the SVSEF community to prosper together.

The 2009-2010 season began and ended well for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, culminating in three athletes participating in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. A fourth just missed making the U.S. Olympic Alpine Team. Congratulations go out to all of these athletes. There is much to look forward to. With the formation of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Olympic Development Team, our goal is now to “raise the bar” and send six athletes to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Based on past success, we are well suited to the challenge. At the same time we continue to focus on our main mission: to provide strong and vibrant junior winter sports programs for the youth of the Wood River Valley. Our core principles are education (both on and off the snow), discipline, competition, team spirit, and self-esteem. We encourage and teach the kids in our four disciplines to be leaders, so they are better prepared to tackle future challenges and have a solid base to develop into good citizens. This is the essence of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, and our success rate is astounding. Good stewardship of the Foundation is based on fundraising. The expense of providing four winter sports programs is always ongoing. Maintaining and improving these programs, which are some of the best in the U.S., is costly. It is due to the generous support of our gracious benefactors that we accomplish this task. Thank you to our many donors, supporters, volunteers, coaches, and staff for making it happen year after year. We could not be a successful organization without your expertise, effort, and generosity. And thank you to Sun Valley Resort for your continued support. More time on the mountains has enabled our young athletes to achieve loftier goals in their performances on the snow. The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation is a unique organization because it encompasses nearly all of our community. I believe it is one of the most important organizations in our valley, serving thousands of children in the four disciplines over the years. The blend of athletics and education has enriched their lives, and ours as well. Your support of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation is a great return on your investment in these fine young athletes. If you are like me, you will feel rewarded for your contribution.
- Rufus Brown, President SVSEF Board of Directors
IN RECOGNITION Gary Black, Jr. (2003-2009): As Chairman and CEO of Ski Racing Magazine, Gary brought a wealth of information and insight into the complex world of snowsports, an invaluable asset for the board and administration. In addition to his professional life, Gary has parented several alpine racers, another important insight. During Gary’s term as President, he always pushed for higher standards and program offerings. Combined with his affable nature and “mountain meetings,” Gary always made everyone feel comfortable and involved, and never hesitated to pitch in during an event. Thanks for all the great stories, leadership, intelligence, and overall support. Paul Fremont-Smith, Jr. (2003-2009): Paul’s passion for alpine skiing has led him all over the world to partake in the sport, creating a reservoir of knowledge and experience. Prior to moving to Sun Valley, Paul called Sugarloaf, Vermont home and he established himself in the Sugarloaf community developing and guiding the Carrabassett Valley Academy to new standards and levels of success. This experience proved to be an invaluable resource for the SVSEF Board. Even as Paul departs, the Board can rest assured he will continually be there for the SVSEF. Thanks for everything, Paul; you made a difference. See you on Baldy! John Seiller (2003-2009): John’s quick wit and dry (at times very dry) sense of humor combined with his training as an attorney was invaluable, especially during difficult times or discussions. As a passionate snowsports enthusiast and competitor, (yes, he is a fast Nordic skier and bike rider) and as a current parent, John’s contributions to the SVSEF went beyond the board meetings. He could even be found running timing for an XC event or helping with the ski swap. We know John will always be available in the future to help out no matter the task. Thanks!

A CADEMIC P ROGRAM Coming off a year where the SVSEF sent several athletes to compete in the Vancouver Olympic Games as well as significant national and regional events, it is easy to focus on the athletic achievements of the four SVSEF programs. As the Academic Director, however, I wanted to offer my own metric for the 2009-10 season that is as impressive as any competitive result of the year: The average cumulative GPA for ALL SVSEF upper school athletes was a 3.4. While there are certainly highs and lows buried within that average statistic, I am quite proud that the athletes within the organization are, as a whole, producing B+ work. As a SVSEF alumnus, I can understand the difficulty of juggling both skiing and academic commitments. There is no way to avoid the conflicting schedules of winter ski racing with a typical academic calendar. The Academic Program within the SVSEF was created to help the athletes and their families understand and manage the extreme time demands made on competitive winter athletes. The Academic Director of the SVSEF works with the administration at Wood River High School, the Community School, and The Sage School to create skier specific academic programs. In addition, I communicate regularly with teachers while monitoring and supporting the athletes who need additional academic help. With the existing programs already in place, ski team athletes can free up their winter schedule by going to summer school and taking online courses. In today’s ultra-competitive ski racing environment it is necessary to build programs that maximize on-snow training time, while at the same time fulfilling the necessary graduation requirements. We made several significant advances in our relationship with Wood River Public Schools last year. At the high school level, we received the goahead to organize and promote a public school “academy.” Athletes who choose to go this route will commit themselves to a specific schedule of courses that meet NCAA and upper level college requirements while also freeing up additional training time in the winter and spring trimesters. At the middle school level, we spent quite a bit of time last spring looking at and developing several options for SVSEF students who miss both their 6th and 7th period classes for afternoon training. This included a home-school option, utilizing the Idaho Digital Learning Academy to supplement WRMS courses, and a greater commitment by the administration to work with the unique training schedules of the SVSEF programs. At the Community School, we provided input as the school made the decision to adopt a trimester schedule. They have also developed a skierspecific “Flex Plan” that utilizes summer school options to limit the course load for skiers during the winter trimester. While these these new programs are in their infancy, we strongly encourage SVSEF families to support and take advantage of these unique opportunities. The academic schedules that have been created for SVSEF athletes are not without sacrifices. Students are required to keep up with their assignments, maintain a “C” letter grade and show positive effort in all of their classes. I manage an Academic Center at the base of Warm Springs with Jeff Graves, our math specialist. We provide counseling, planning, and tutoring support to students during the competition season. The academic component of the SVSEF is a monitoring and SUPPORT network for all athletes. Whether students are struggling to stay afloat during the busy traveling season, or simply want help moving from a “B” to an “A,” we are here to help. Use us.

C OACHES’ C ORNER Ruben Macaya - Alpine Program Director: Several years ago, the SVSEF set their sights on becoming one of the best junior ski programs in the nation. When that decision was made, one of the elements we knew would be the cornerstone of success was GOOD PLANNING. This season was the perfect example of what can be achieved when great execution follows a season organized around good planning. We began the 20092010 season on June 1st with a well-planned succession of Summer and Fall camps. We followed that with a competition season that was well thought out and planned to benefit the majority of our athletes. We feel the results were impressive at all levels of the Alpine Team! Our entire J4 Team was dominant in the division. Our J3 girls made good progress and the J3 boys were a force to be reckoned with at both the Divisional and Regional levels. Several boys reached the podium at the J-3 Olympics and one athlete qualified for the Whistler Cup in Canada, one of the most prestigious international events for J3s. We also qualified more athletes than ever for the J2 National Championships and reached the podium in one of the DH events as well. You should all be proud of your achievements this past season. We are! We expect to continue improving on our collective success and for that we need your help and dedication. This coming season, as we deal not only with the vagaries of ski racing but with a less than ideal economy, planning will be vitally important for the SVSEF as well as for families and individual athletes. Proper training, well-planned race schedules, and good coordination with academics will help us achieve the success we are striving for. Keep up the good work habits throughout the summer. Live healthy, stay in shape, and set your sights on a successful season next year!
Nate Schwing - Alpine J1/J2 Head Coach: It was another great J1-2 winter season that seemed to fly by. This year we continued to raise the bar and progress both as individuals and as a team. One of the themes we discussed a lot this season is what it means to live the lifestyle of a ski racer. The ski racing lifestyle has many elements including commitment, discipline, fitness, and time management. It is also a lifestyle filled with travel, friendships, and a healthy dose of “mountain life.” To be successful in this sport, J1-2 athletes must fully commit to this lifestyle. They must account for, and take care of, the many details that make up the sport of ski racing. It is not always easy, but can be very rewarding. This season, I feel the J1-2 Team invested their energy into this lifestyle. The athletes learned to manage the time and commitment it takes to find success in this demanding sport. They showed maturity in the way they took care of themselves, maintaining their fitness throughout the winter. They committed extra time after training and on days off to work on their equipment, realizing how much time and
7
effort it takes to make fast speed skis. The J1-2 athletes came to training focused, putting the same effort into each training run as they do in a race. In short, they were becoming students of the sport. Our J1-2 team also did a great job managing their studies, finishing out the season with a strong academic year. We are fortunate to have a large group of athletes who are leading by example. As they invest their energies into the ski racing lifestyle, the entire team is learning what it takes to become a successful ski racer. Athletes who commit to the ski racing lifestyle receive lifelong benefits. Ski racers have the opportunity to travel around the country and sometimes around the world, making lifelong friends in the process. Ski racing can provide opportunities for future employment in the ski industry. Finally, the ski racing lifestyle allows us the opportunity to enjoy a full and rewarding life in the mountains. We are now deep in the summer phase of our program, training hard and having fun. The J1-2 athletes are committed to summer camps, strength training, conditioning, and preparation for another exciting winter of racing. We had a very successful winter in 2009-10. Let’s continue to train hard to ensure an even more successful 2010-11 season.
Scott McGrew - Assistant Alpine Director/J3 Head Coach: The winter of 2009-10 was a special season. In the J3 ranks we experienced unprecedented success with athletes on the podium at every race we attended. We had our first opportunity to represent the club at the international level in nearly 10 years (Whistler Cup), and we finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the fabled Topolino Shootout (which, to my knowledge, has never been done before). These accomplishments shined a spotlight on the SVSEF program throughout the Western Region, and it was great to have our athletes in high-profile positions. The true success of our club did not come from being faster on the course or from the depth of our athletes’ talents. It was the result, however, of the team as a whole being much greater than the sum of its parts. There was a collective drive from the group that was truly a great thing to behold. Not every kid was on the podium, not every kid qualified for our end of the season championship; however, every athlete trained and aspired to become a champion. The level of dedication (and heart) was amazing, and the skills associated with virtues such as sacrifice, desire, toughness, humility, sportsmanship, curiosity, and graciousness completely eclipsed the ephemeral and short-lived glory of trophy hunting. As a coach, nothing makes me more proud than to be a part of this group of kids and the journey they committed to undertake. I would like to thank the community for helping us along the way. During our summer program and throughout the winter, people from many different walks of life expressed how impressed they were by how hard the athletes were working. The team got a sense that people were paying attention, and this helped them appreciate the value of the experience. The saying, “it takes a village to raise a child” rings true, and collectively the family and friends of the SVSEF contributed to producing good leaders and good citizens for the future. We’re looking forward to next year.
S EASON H IGHLIGHTS This year we met most of the goals we set for ourselves. We missed some “championship” wins by very little; but at the same time we showed great team strength. Below are the highlights for the season:

C OACHES’ C ORNER Rick Kapala - Cross-Country Program Director: This past year took the cross-country ski team from the after school “sharks and minnows” mayhem of the Devo Team, through the US Junior and Senior Championships, into World Cup level events, and finally onto the Olympic Games. It is no exaggeration to say that there were Sun Valley skiers competing in every level of ski racing on the planet and, in most cases, posting the very best of results. The SVSEF cross-country team is one of the few programs in the U.S. that provides the support structure for hometown skiers to grow from the games of the Devo Team and ascend the ski-racing pipeline to the Winter Olympics. Five years ago, we initiated the project we call the Olympic Development Team (ODT). The objective was to help our SVSEF junior skiers continue in the sport of cross-country ski racing as far as their motivation and talent could take them. Thanks to the hard work of some very dedicated athletes and the support of coaches, family, and the community, we have been successful in our efforts. Both Morgan Arritola and Simi Hamilton were selected to represent the USA at the Vancouver Winter Games. Their journey is rooted in the experiences of skiers throughout the team. This past season we had another great year of fun skiing and adventure on the Devo Team. We continued to develop strong fundamentals at the Prep Team level, and our Comp Team rolled through the season led by the duo of Annie Pokorny (US J1 10k Champ) and Sloan Storey (US J2 Silver Medalist).
9
Aside from our Olympic aspirations, the goals of the SVSEF XC Team remain the same; we strive to be the best youth program in the Wood River Valley and the best junior ski team in the country. We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of athletes who love the ski racing lifestyle and are supported by a great group of coaches, parents and the greater SVSEF community. The year was amazing and it is fueling yet another drive to even greater success. But let’s not forget the foundation of all that we do. Athletics provide for us the opportunity to grow and challenge ourselves. All real success is built on the effort of each day and the love of the process. See you on the trails!
Kelley Sinnott - Cross-Country Prep Head Coach: There is a certain satisfaction a coach gets from observing their athletes during successful moments. This season the coaches of the Cross-Country Prep Team were more than satisfied, based not only on the success of our athletes at races, but also on the energy, enthusiasm, and growth the kids brought to ski team every day. Competitively, the Prep Team skiers had a great season: Annika Landis stepped up her game and found herself on the podium in many J4 races. Our J3 girls, Haley Montgomery, Maddy Watts, Montana Tucker, and Katie Feldman started off the season with a bang taking 1, 2, 4, and 5 respectively in the Bozeman sprint race. They continued their successes with multiple podiums throughout the season. A relatively young men’s team held their own with several top 10 finishes, with many of the boys participating in their first regional competitions. The prep team also impressed their coaches with the endless amount of energy and enthusiasm they had for the sport and for their teammates. With smiles or smirks on their faces, they climbed mountains in snow, rain, and sun, swam in frozen lakes, skied after dusk, dragged coaches down sand dunes, pushed themselves up hills in ankle-deep snow, battled killer mosquitoes, puked during ski races, conquered the Boulder Mountain Tour, raced in New Hampshire rain, got lost in the dark, and never failed to meet costume-based challenges. The 38 skiers making up the 2009-10 XC Prep Ski Team were up for anything. Despite the grueling or hilarious situations they always did it well, did it hard, and gave it their best with a grin on their often exhausted or frozen faces. Their positive attitudes and enjoyment of skiing won the team the well-deserved Sportsmanship Trophy at the Western States Youth Ski Festival in Whitefish, Montana, a perfect ending to a fun and satisfying season.
Chris Mallory - Comp & ODT Team Coach: The Sun Valley Comp Team had another successful and fun season last year. One of the main reasons for that success is due to a unique situation we have in the cross-country program right now. We have ODT athletes who just competed at the 2010 Olympics participating in workouts and pushing our Post-grad skiers. The Post-grad skiers in turn are pushing our Comp Team athletes, and so on down the ranks. We’ve had dryland training sessions this year running, rollerskiing and bounding with 30 athletes of all ages rubbing shoulders and giving everything they have. When newcomers like Haley Montgomery get to train on interval days with Nicole DeYong and Morgan Arritola it’s a great opportunity for them to learn and feed off their energy. These types of training sessions helped the Comp Team post some great results on snow last winter. In Bozeman, one the toughest courses in the division, the team had its best Junior National Qualifier weekend ever. The Sun Valley Team grabbed 15 podiums and won 8 of the 12 age class races contested. Erik Fagerstrom, Annie Pokorny, Danny Sundali, Will Spiller, Emily Williams, and Sloan Storey were all first time JNQ winners! Aside from the racing, I don’t think anyone on the team will ever forget the 10-day adventure we spent backpacking across the Beartooth Wilderness.
10
S EASON H IGHLIGHTS It is all about continuity. Every year our Cross-Country Team wants to be in the mix as one of the best teams in the US. This year Annie Pokorny as National J1 Champ and Sloan Storey as the National J2 Silver Medalist kept us out front, but results are built on a big base. Our J3s also showed they will be a force with Haley Montgomery and Katie Feldman charging through the IMD race season. Coming from behind them were hordes of J4s and J5s. While the kids were getting it done, the ODT was racing all over the globe with SVSEF skiers Morgan Arritola and Simi Hamilton making their first Olympic Games and Nicole DeYong and Mike Sinnott throwing down on the European OPA Cup circuit. Grow great kids, run a comprehensive program, and the results will come!!

F REESTYLE P ROGRAM COMP TEAM - This team is for athletes who are committed to achieving their personal best by pursuing Freestyle skiing with focus and determination. We work to develop the skills and the strength necessary to be competitive in all events. The daily training includes freeskiing and training in the mogul course or in the Freeride venues (halfpipe, terrain park). Comp team’s season begins in June with summer ski camps, dryland workouts, and water ramp camps. On-snow training begins in December and runs six days per week. Tuition includes academic tutoring, membership to High Altitude Fitness, and a locker at the Engl Training Center. Athlete to coach ratio: 6:1
PREP TEAM - The Prep Team is a stepping-stone from the Devo Team to the Comp Team.
It allows an athlete to experience training at a more intense and focused level without the full-time commitment of the Comp Team. Travel is limited and only available with parents. Dryland training starts in June. On-snow training begins in early December and runs four days per week; athletes explore the possibilities of “what could be…” Tuition includes academic mentoring and ski and boot storage at the Engl Training Center. Athlete to coach ratio: 6:1
DEVO TEAM - This is our introductory program for athletes to begin their freestyle skiing careers.
The focus is on basic mogul skiing technique and exposure to all types of terrain including terrain parks and the halfpipe. Athletes experience free skiing on Baldy, opportunities to train on mogul courses and freeride venues while strengthening friendships in a team environment. On-snow training begins in early December and runs weekends and most holidays. Athlete to coach ratio 6:1
C OACHES’ C ORNER Andy Ware - Freestyle Program Director: The 2009-2010 season was a year of recognition for our freestyle team. Athletes on both our men’s and women’s teams emerged as some of the best mogul and park/pipe athletes in the country. Our program built upon the momentum generated in the previous season to achieve some incredible results both in the Intermountain division and nationally as well. Once again the support of the SVSEF community and my outstanding coworkers and coaching staff made this past year one of the best the freestyle team has ever had. In order to compete and perform well in mogul and park/pipe skiing you must develop two very important characteristics - commitment and trust. You must trust in your own ability and be 100% committed in order to handle the speeds and perform the aerial maneuvers involved in our sport. There is no room for fear. By working to build trust and understand what commitment really means, our athletes discover that they have developed many valuable characteristics that will help them find success in whatever the future has in store for them. Our coaching staff let their actions speak for them and selflessly demonstrated their trust and commitment to our team this season. Mogul team head coach, Joey Cordeau, went on the road 9 times in 2010. Park/Pipe Team head coach, Ben Verge, mentored our senior athletes, challenging them to step up and not hold anything back in week after week of training and competition. Jeff and Debbie Page continued to do hours of behind the scenes work creating videos and organizing events. Regardless of what was asked, the entire staff trusted me and was committed to the program to provide the best opportunity possible for our athletes. The Sun Valley Resort built some incredible freestyle terrain in 2010. The halfpipe was one of the first pipes in the country to open and the
12
new Dollar Mtn. Terrain Park gave our athletes a chance to train like never before. The park design catered to athletes of all ages and abilities which lead to many “firsts” for our skiers. Race Arena became our new mogul venue. Our course was one of the longest and steepest in the U.S. and the Greyhawk chair provided quick laps back to the course for our athletes to train. We have already begun to build for our 2010-2011 season. Our athletes will be training at summer camps all over the world. Our coaches are planning and training for the coming year. All of this is made possible because of the solid foundation and leadership of the SVSEF, its donors, and the families of the athletes that make up the SVSEF community. Commitment and trust are unique characteristics of all of us in this ski community and I feel privileged to be a part of this organization. My thanks to the SVSEF Board of Directors, Don Wiseman, and every member of the SVSEF family for the opportunity to ski with your kids, they are amazing!
S EASON H IGHLIGHTS Our athletes posted some incredible results in 2010. They set some lofty goals for themselves and were able to check many of them off the list by the end of the season. Athlete to coach ratio: 7:1 PREP TEAM - The Prep Team is primarily for riders in grades 5-8. As the name implies, Prep Team is preparation to become the best snowboarder you can be. Riders will take the skills learned on the Devo Team and apply them toward specific goals and challenges. Riders will continue to use freeriding as the basis to become a well-rounded rider while beginning to focus on the different disciplines within the sport. Dryland training starts in October. Riders will work within a group setting Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from December through March. Riders will also be encouraged to test the competitive waters by participating in our local USASA slopestyle and halfpipe events and one regional event to be determined by the coaching staff. Tuition includes academic mentoring and a locker at the Engl Training Center. Athlete to coach ratio: 7:1 DEVO TEAM - Geared for riders in grades 2-5, athletes will focus on freeriding, rails, jumps, halfpipe, gates and more. Special attention will be paid to the three Fs: freeriding, fundamentals, and fun! Kids will get to ride with a great group of riders as well as the SVSEF coaches who have years of practical experience getting young riders to realize their potential. The goal of the Devo Team is to foster a lifelong love of snowboarding. Dryland training starts in November. The on-snow season runs on weekends December through March with some school holidays included. Athlete to coach ratio: 7:1
C OACHES’ C ORNER Andy Gilbert - Snowboard Program Director: We have entered a new era with the Sun Valley Resort. The facilities provided this season were unparalleled, and as such the level of training we were able to offer this year was outstanding. Having a quality terrain park allowed us to actually attend events with a game plan in place, which really allowed riders to shine. This new era promises to produce some great things including more home events. With less travel and more time to train, riders will have a great opportunity to refine their skills over the coming winters. As these opportunities continue to develop and the vision for the resort becomes clearer, the Sun Valley Snowboard Team will continue to be at the forefront of these changes in order to create the best opportunities for our riders. Our team did extremely well this season with our ODT riders thriving at the top levels of the sport. Closer to home, the Comp Team qualified almost 100% of its members to the USASA Nationals, and our D-Team groms took their first steps into the larger snowboard world and loved it! This is a very exciting time to be involved in snowboarding in Sun Valley and the future looks very bright.
14
S EASON H IGHLIGHTS The 2009-2010 season saw great improvements at all levels of the Snowboard program. Watching the D-Team groms competing in their first snowboard events alongside kids on the cusp of an elite career is truly inspiring. Snowboarding can be a very personal experience and its achievements are relative from rider to rider, but every day we saw kids pushing themselves to break into that next level. Some of the highlights included Mal Prior peaking at the right time and pulling down a 5th place in the Open Class Halfpipe at the USASA Nationals and Wyatt Bunce winning his age class (also at Nationals), his last halfpipe event with the SVSEF. Regionally our riders were a force to be reckoned with, and were consistently on the podium. Those first, second, and third place spots were virtually interchangeable amongst the team, a fact that proves the talent pool was deep this season. Seeing the young kids on the podium at our home events smiling at their accomplishments was a great indication that there is more to come.

DEVO TEAM
O LYMPIC D EVELOPMENT P ROGRAM Founded in April 1966, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) has delivered on its mission to provide exceptional snow sports programs for the youth of the Wood River Valley. The primary goal of the program is to assist each participant in reaching his/her athletic potential, while developing a positive attitude and a strong personal character. During its 44 year history the SVSEF has introduced thousands of the Wood River Valley’s youth to the joys and rewards of participating in wintersports by operating one of the best junior development programs in the nation. As a result of being the best junior program in the nation the SVSEF has had numerous athletes rise to the top and compete on the international level and become members of the US Ski and Snowboard Teams: Gretchen Fraser, Pete and Susie Patterson, Christin Cooper, Picabo Street, Reggie and Zach Crist, Graham Watanabe, Morgan Arritola are just a few. Today’s Olympic Development Team (ODT) began in 1996 when several concerned SVSEF alpine coaches and board members realized the financial demands on up-and-coming alpine skiers was becoming a barrier to their advancement. The group formed the Olympic Development Fund (ODF) to financially assist the Alpine Team members who qualify to the SVSEF Alpine Olympic Development Team by virtue of their results and their standings in US and world rankings. Beginning in 2005 the ODT concept expanded to incorporate all SVSEF programs; Alpine, Freestyle, Cross-Country, and Snowboard. The fruits of that change resulted in 3 SVSEF athletes participating in the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.
ODT MISSION - To provide select elite athletes from the SVSEF with the necessary support,
both financial and through program offerings, to compete and succeed on the international level and to become members of the US Ski and Snowboard Teams (USST).
ODT VISION - The SVSEF ODT vision is to place six athletes on the US Olympic Team at Sochi, Russia in 2014 by being the premier elite ski
and snowboard development club in the nation. “Six at Sochi” is a lofty goal, yet a realistic one given the current ODT athlete pipeline. The goal remains tangible as long as our ODT athletes continue to receive the necessary training and competition opportunities. - Don Wiseman, Executive Director
CROSS-COUNTRY ODT
The SVSEF Cross-Country Olympic Development Team had a very exciting year in 2010. The roster for the year expanded to include a total of 9 athletes, including Morgan Arritola, Mike Sinnott, Colin Rodgers, Simi Hamilton, Nicole DeYong, Kate Whitcomb, and Adele Espy as well as college athletes Alexa Turzian and Reid Pletcher who participate with the ODT in the summer. The season featured many breakout performances, including outstanding results from Alexa Turzian and Reid Pletcher, both representing University of Colorado at the NCAA Championships in Steamboat Springs, skiing to 2nd and 4th place finishes respectively. We saw outstanding results from Mike Sinnott and Nicole DeYong at the Europa Cup Finals – one step below the World Cup in Rogla, Slovenia. Both ranked as the top Americans in the series, with Sinnott skiing to an especially impressive 4th place overall against a loaded field. By far the biggest news of the year, however, was seeing two XC-ODT athletes make the U.S. Olympic Team and represent the USA in Vancouver (well, Whistler, actually). Morgan Arritola and Simi Hamilton both secured spots thanks to very strong results in the early winter, with Morgan throwing down top results in Europe, including a very solid 34th against a loaded field in Davos, Switzerland and Simi winning nearly every domestic sprint race he started in as well as winning the Sprint Qualification at the Under-23 World Championships in Hinterzarten, Germany. Once at the Games, Mo and Simi continued to perform, with Morgan skiing to 34th and 37th place finishes and coming in as the top American in the 15km Pursuit. Simi skied to an exciting 29th in the Sprint Preliminary round, placing him as the top American and qualifying him to ski in the heats later in the day, where he held his 29th position. Both Mo and Simi represented the U.S. in the Relay events as well. - Travis Jones, Cross-Country ODT Head Coach
16
FREESTYLE ODT
The sport of freestyle skiing is the tip of the spear when it comes to the progression of skiing. Freestyle skiing began with moguls and aerials and now we are seeing athletes pushing the limits of their creativity in the halfpipe and slopestyle. As freestyle skiing progresses so will the SVSEF Freestyle ODT program. The purpose of our ODT program is to give our athletes the support they need to compete at the World Cup and Pro level. Our focus is towards ski disciplines that are current Olympic events or have the strong potential to become an Olympic event. For an athlete to qualify for our Freestyle ODT program they must be a current member of the U.S. Freestyle Mogul A,B, or C Teams. We are also developing a criteria for future U.S. Freestyle Halfpipe team athletes in anticipation of skier halfpipe becoming an Olympic event in the 2014 Winter games in Russia. In 2009-2010 our lone Freestyle ODT athlete was Shane Cordeau. Shane earned a spot on the U.S. Freestyle Mogul C Team in 2009 and made his first World Cup appearance at Deer Valley, UT in January of 2010. We have pledged to support Shane’s World Cup future to help him achieve his goal of giving his absolute best in the 2014 Olympics. In addition, the Sun Valley Freestyle ski team has produced the Men’s Jr National Halfpipe Champion 3 of the last 4 years. As skier halfpipe continues to attract more and more world-wide attention we plan on supporting our up -and-coming champions in their pursuit of Olympic achievements as well. These are some of the valley’s strongest and most talented athletes bringing to life Sun Valley’s freestyle roots. - Andy Ware, Freestyle ODT Program Director
SNOWBOARD ODT
Going through our first Olympic cycle after being created in 2007, the Snowboard ODT has succeeded in its mission to help SVSEF athletes through the “gap” from high level junior riders to top elite U.S. Team athletes. This season saw great success from our lone ODT member Kaitlyn Farrington (snowboard halfpipe). After a slow start and some frustrating results during the grueling Olympic Team selections (where she finished 6th to make the team of four), she picked herself up and went on to have one of the best seasons a rider could have. Kaitlyn Farrington’s results: • 2nd - Dew Tour Snowbasin, Utah • 1st - Dew Tour Mt. Snow, Vermont • Overall Dew Cup winner • 3rd - U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix Park City, UT • 1st - European X-Games (beating Olympic Gold Medalist Torah Bright) As a result of these finishes Kaitlyn has been named to the U.S. Snowboarding “A” Team. Her successes are an example that programs like the ODT are needed to help these young athletes reach their goals. Kaitlyn’s family, the SVSEF, and many generous individuals helped get Kaitlyn to where she is today. The hope is that successes like hers will show that the ODT programs do work, and that future athletes will gain support and inspiration from those successes. Kaitlyn will continue to work toward the goal of making the Olympic Team and the ODT will continue to support her desire to make it there. - Andy Gilbert, Snowboard ODT Program Director
ALPINE ODT
The Alpine Olympic Development Team is made up of the elite Wood River Valley SVSEF athletes who are just a notch below the U.S. D-Team criteria. Our criteria is tightly coordinated with the USSA National Development System so as to ensure a seamless transition when the time comes for those athletes to move to the U.S. Ski Team sphere. By virtue of older athletes retiring, the Alpine Team had no members meeting the ODT criteria for the 2009-10 season. We have, however, at season’s end nominated our two athletes who will be in the Alpine ODT for the 2010-11 season: Tanner Farrow - Tanner is a very talented and athletic young skier (17) ranked 2nd in Slalom and 7th in Giant Slalom in the country in his age group. He has been invited to train with the U.S. D -Team in South America this fall. Some of his results include victories in regional races plus a 3rd place in the SL and a 4th place in the GS at the Junior II National Championships. Teagen Palmer - Teagen had an outstanding early season string of results that allowed her to be ranked 2nd in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slalom in the country in her age group. She’s had a few victories and many top five results in regional FIS Elite Series races. Not bad for a 16-year-old! She has been invited to a Western Region Elite camp in Chile in late summer, which should put her in great position to start the coming season victoriously again. - Ruben Macaya, Alpine ODT Program Director

FUNDRAISING ($484,832)
Fundraising is a commitment by the community to support the SVSEF and its programs. Without the tireless support of the athletes, coaches, parents, countless businesses and individuals, fundraising would not be as successful and we would not be able to provide the excellent programs for which the SVSEF is known.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS 2009-2010
Annual Fund Drive: Our mail solicitation campaign is the largest of the SVSEF fundraising efforts. This issue is our 11th issue of the Annual Review and our goal is to tell you “everything you ever wanted to know about the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation” and what your support does for the Wood River Valley youth. 33rd Annual Fall Game Dinner: Our oldest fundraiser continues the tradition of starting the season with a community sit-down feast combined with silent and live auctions, as well as dancing. Over the years, this event has turned into a sold-out, 350+ guest fundraiser. Held at the Sun Valley Inn Limelight Room, each year the community continues to show its support and generosity. 13th Annual Bill Janss Pro-Am Classic: The Janss Pro-Am Classic, founded by Beverly Hay DeChevrieux, mixes one pro racer from the ranks of Olympic, World Cup, and Pro Tour athletes, with four “citizen” skiers/snowboarders of all skill levels to create five member teams to compete for prizes and titles. For last year’s theme, “CELEBRATE!”, the teams selected Holidays, Birthdays, Graduation, Special Occasions, St. Patty’s Day, Mardi Gras, the Olympics, New Year’s, etc., and saw three days of fun skiing and racing on Warm Springs. This is one event not to miss next spring (April 7 - 9, 2011). The Ski Swap: Each October, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation hosts a valley-wide ski swap. The event is both a fundraiser and public service to the community as sellers and buyers move old and new equipment with 20% of the proceeds from each sale going to the SVSEF. Van Advertising: We sell advertising space on our fleet of vans to local businesses to offset the van maintenance costs. Our vans travel throughout the West and provide a great opportunity for local business owners to support the SVSEF and receive unique advertising exposure. Baldy Hill Climb: The 2009 Baldy Hill Climb was the 31st annual race, organized by our Cross-Country Program. The BHC signals the beginning of the winter season for locals and is a measure of participants’ fitness. The BHC attracts over 180 hikers and racers of all ages who climb to the top of Baldy from the Warm Springs side. The “Kinder Climb,” a short version of the BHC (starting at Warm Springs and finishing at the bottom of Squirrel Lift) is fun for the younger kids. In 2008, the BHC “Double” was introduced, a combination race of mountain biking and the traditional Baldy Hill Climb. Participants in the “Double” race to the top of Baldy on mountain bikes; ride the Challenger chair down; then climb Baldy in the racer division. Lane Parrish Memorial Race: Named for local extreme skiing legend Lane Parrish, the race combines Alpine and Freestyle competition (mogul skiing and Giant Slalom) to determine Baldy’s best all-around skier. Earn your bragging rights! 100 Days Pig Roast/TGR Movie: The 2009 Pig Roast and Teton Gravity Research movie showing were a great success. Both fundraisers are a collaboration between the SVSEF and Apple’s Bar & Grill. The local skiing community comes out in full force, making both events a lot of fun and getting everyone pumped about the upcoming season. T-Shirt & Sweatshirt Sales: Team identity and spirit are fostered by sales of these items. Also, thanks to our local vendors, sales are both easy and profitable.
DONATIONS 2009-2010 ($243,377)
The SVSEF receives restricted donations to support the Endowment and special projects: Endowment Fund: Interest from the SVSEF Endowment Fund is distributed in the form of scholarships that help cover tuition and travel costs for approximately 70 athletes in all four programs. Distribution of these scholarship monies is based on financial need and merit. Over the last five years the Endowment has not been drawn on for financial aid. Instead, scholarship monies have been raised during the Fall Game Dinner and the Janss Pro-Am.

The following funds have been established within the SVSEF Endowment Fund: • • • • • • • • • •
The Engl Family Scholarship The Byron Cady Scholarship The Heinz Family Foundation Scholarship The Don and Gretchen Fraser Scholarship The Hobson Memorial Scholarship The Gordon Family Scholarship The Holding Family Scholarship The Fremont-Smith Family Scholarship The Wood Family Scholarship The Stella Keane Scholarship
• • • • • • • • •
The Sun Valley Ski Club Scholarship The John Harker Memorial Scholarship The Betty Catto Scholarship The Howard Dean Memorial Scholarship The Bill Janss Memorial Scholarship The Griffin Family Scholarship The Janet Leigh Scholarship The Flaherty Family Scholarship The Herb Thomas Family Scholarship
At year-end (June 30, 2010) the Endowment had a balance of $1,113,842. During the year $42,750 was donated to the Endowment. Our tradition of providing financial support as needed to our young athletes has become even more important as the costs of competition/training have escalated well beyond the reach of many families. There is now an urgent need to increase the Endowment to meet future needs. The SVSEF Board began a campaign to build the Endowment to $5 million. You can join in this effort by making your annual donation restricted for the Endowment or creating a fund within the Endowment. Restricted Donations: With so many diverse needs and activities among the four disciplines (Alpine, Cross-Country, Freestyle, and Snowboard), the need for the purchase of special equipment or the funding of special projects, including travel to end of season championships, would not be possible without restricted donations. The Olympic Development Teams (ODT) are also funded by restricted donations.
OTHER INCOME ($843,732)
This category covers funds raised by competition sponsorship and promotion, ski pass sales, travel income, and other miscellaneous income. Competition sponsorship and promotion income covers only part of the costs required to produce quality events, a key ingredient to athletic excellence. SVSEF strives to secure as much sponsorship income for these events as possible. Travel income consists of monies received from the athletes for traveling to competition and training camps. Travel income makes up 67% of this category.

The office staff provides the necessary backup for the coaches, parents, and athletes. This category includes the office staff salaries and benefits, as well as other office expenses (phone, office supplies, etc). SVSEF is proud to have administration costs substantially below the national average for non-profit administration budgets.

C OMMUNITY S PEAKS
We have three children, all of whom ski for the SVSEF Nordic team. As parents of young children, we made the decision for them to ski with the Nordic team in hopes they would learn the importance of focus, dedication, responsibility, teamwork, self-esteem, and hard work. All these qualities are exemplified by the SVSEF Nordic team and their coaches. We know what the SVSEF means to us, so we asked our children what it meant to them; at the top of the list for each was “because it’s fun.” At the end of the day, for us, that is the best answer any one of them could have given. This program is providing our children with an infrastructure for whom they will become, instilling core values that will last a lifetime. We are so fortunate to have the SVSEF as part of our lives. Thanks for the fun. - John and Gretchen Gorham Five of our children have been on the alpine and freestyle ski teams over the past seven years. Needless to say, the SVSEF coaches, staff, and benefactors have impacted our family in countless positive ways. When I began to write this, I struggled greatly to express the essence of what SVSEF means to us, and to somehow be able to say “thank you.” Then I came across a story that President Kennedy liked to relate when it came to great dreams and challenges. His story says it best. “The great Irish author Frank O’Connor said that as a boy, he and his friends would make their way across the countryside and when they came across an orchard wall that seemed too high or difficult to cross, they took off their hats and tossed them over it. They had no choice but to follow them.” The SVSEF has helped instill a similar attitude and ethic in all of our children. - Lydia Vorsteveld We have thoroughly enjoyed our SVSEF snowboarding experience with one daughter and two sons moving through the program over the past 7 years. The coaching staff has been superlative: demanding yet fun, setting goals and celebrating the accomplishments. The structure and discipline has been a big help in the kids’ understanding of commitment to a team. While none have yet gone beyond the B team, the experience has been terrific in the rounding out and overall development of our children. The SVSEF is a proven program with world-class athletes to show for it, but equally important is the sense of family it creates and individual character development for all participants. - Jim and Barbara Figge
I asked my daughter, Samantha, if she had any ideas to help me write this and her response was, “I love the ski team!” Sam has been with SVSEF since she was seven. She spent the first three years trying out both the Alpine and Nordic Devo teams. The teams (and head coaches Doran Key and Dave Bingham) were some of the most nurturing and encouraging environments I could imagine for a young skier. She learned more than how to ski. She learned to have fun and to be healthy. As Sam committed to the Alpine Program, the C-Home and C-Travel teams helped hone her racing skills. At the same time they taught us patience and respect for the love of the sport rather than focusing on podiums and awards. As parents, we deeply appreciate the SVSEF’s approach of slowly introducing gates and race technique while encouraging every child to enjoy skiing, not just racing. Six years later, Sam is on the Alpine J3 team and really does love it more each year. All the coaches, too many to list here, have been inspirational all the way. It took a lot for us to trust anyone else with the care and education - both on and off the snow, at home and away - of our only daughter, but we do now. We have been rewarded not only with an excellent skier, but with a committed and disciplined student, a superb athlete, and an overall great kid. Thanks SVSEF for doing such a great job! - Tracey and Patrick Busby

Our dream to move our family to Ketchum and enjoy a mountain lifestyle became a reality for us in 2008. We believe a ski mountain is one of the few remaining safe places where kids can be independent and adventurous, so the first thing we did was enroll ours in the SVSEF. We were so grateful for the way SVSEF welcomed our children and helped each of them find their niche. Our son Rex (16) joined the SVSEF Snowboard Team and has grown tremendously in the sport. Following his passion in a sport he loves has been a natural way to learn dedication. His coaches taught him the difference between “just showing up” and SHOWING UP, committed and ready to work hard. Rex has also learned the patience and acceptance it takes to be a member of a team, and traveling to events has taught Rex how to budget both time and money while on his own. While the coaches at SVSEF recognize kids’ fears and limitations, they balance this beautifully with encouragement and training to lead them gently out of their comfort zone. Our daughter Reyna (14) is excited to take her snowboarding to the next level. Our youngest, Tayte (12), started out on alpine C-Home before moving to the Snowboard D team. She was welcomed on the team although she’d only snowboarded a few times previously. This year she’s moving on to the Snowboard Prep Team. Her coach has given her a vision of the tremendous opportunities available to girls in snowboarding today and she is excited to progress. The SVSEF has taught our family many things: discipline, dedication, perseverance, patience, and having the courage to try new things and meet new people. It is important, however, to remember that one of the primary goals of the program is to HAVE FUN! The SVSEF has provided a great avenue for many fun times. We see that our kids are really PROUD to be a part of the SVSEF Snowboard Team, and we think that says a lot. - Kelly and Mark Kelly The SVSEF program has been the best thing that has ever happened for my son. The confidence, empathy for others, and his overall maturity are only the tip of the changed being I see before me now. Oh yeah, his skiing is phenomenal now too! Thanks for all you do. - Sheri Thomas
