TALES OF A WOOD RIVER WANDERER
If you moved here for the winter and stayed for the summer, you wouldn’t be the first. BY CHRIS MILLSPAUGH
T
he saying goes, “I came to visit for a weekend and ended up staying all of my life.” That’s what happened to a lot of people who’ve ended up in the Wood River Valley over the years—including me.
I arrived here in the spring of 1974 with my wife and two sons in a 1961 Ford Econoline van with carpeted bumpers. (I didn’t want to hurt anyone.) We were both U.S. Air Force veterans who had elected to make a living as entertainers rather than going the traditional 9-to-5 route. We got popular in Houston, Texas and finally made it to “the mecca”—Las Vegas. After our engagements there were over, we sat down to contemplate our next move. (Actually, we threw a dart at a map and it landed on Challis, Idaho.) Okay, we thought. Is there someplace interesting nearby? What about that ski resort called Sun Valley? Although neither one of us could ski, we were ready for a fresh start, so off we went to live in the mountains.
washer, a cook, a bartender in addition to playing weekend gigs at The Holiday Inn, The Alpine Saloon in Ketchum, The Muleshoe in Hailey and Sam’s Club in Bellevue. Soon, we had rented a house and acquired quite a number of friends who guided us through the first three years until we officially attained the status of “locals.” (That was the generally accepted I have never rule of thumb for becoming accepted in the Wood had so much fun River Valley.)
in my life as just being a part of this great community. You can try your hand at anything you ever dreamed of doing, even things you didn’t know existed.
We drove around the area for a while in the drizzling rain, staring at the mountains and the small towns nestled among the trees. “We love it!” we said. But now, how would we make it work? “Let’s get jobs and play music on the side!” A brilliant idea, and we soon discovered we weren’t alone in our approach. Many other folks were doing the same thing. I became an office supply salesman, a writer, a dish14
THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
At times, it was difficult. During our first winter we endured minus-30-degree weather conditions— you know, when your toilet freezes and the thought of burning the living room furniture seems like a pretty good idea. With the help of our new friends, we made it through to our second summer. When the sun rose in the morning on the mountains, we found it was all worth the effort. We were living in the most beautiful place in all the world and we were having fun. What’s the matter with that?
If you’ve decided to live in the mountains and are thinking of moving here, let me tell you that you can do it no matter your situation or your living status. You must only keep an open mind, adapt to the environment and be willing to accept things the way they are. Man or woman, rich or poor, married or single, liberal or conservative, healthy or infirmed, there’s a place for you here if you jump into the mountain lifestyle wholeheartedly. In three years’ time, you’ll
become a “local,” too, and gratefully accept this badge of honor. You’ll learn skills you never knew you wanted and your mind will expand and soar with wonder.
! E G A L L I AV S E K A T IT Come join our family of community-minded volunteers and donors.
Yes, you’ll love this place and you’ll love the people, as well. You’ll find that we’re all in this together one harsh winter day when you’ve driven into a ditch and someone you hardly know stops and pulls you out, asking for nothing in return. Or, when you have to run to a meeting but you have a bunch of kids you cannot leave and your neighbor says, “Bring them over here. I’ll watch them like my own.” Or, when a forest fire crests Mount Baldy and you fear losing all of your possessions, kind folks come by and load your valuables in their trucks and store them in their garages in the next town out of danger. Or, if you come upon hard times, are ill or injured and can’t work, these same locals will throw a benefit for you to help you pay the rent. They’ll celebrate your birthday, your kids’ birthdays, your successes, your milestones and will be genuinely happy for you. Soon, you’ll be doing for others as they have done for you. Friends and families are the great assets up here and strong bonds between people are quickly formed.
Helping others will make you feeL GREAT!

THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
I have never had so much fun in my life as just being a part of this great community. You can try your hand at anything you ever dreamed of doing, even things you didn’t know existed. At various times I’ve been a humor columnist, a radio disc jockey with my own soap opera five days a week, a producer of a live weekly comedy show, an announcer at the Wagon Days Big Hitch Parade (the largest non-motorized parade in the country) and the Trailing of the Sheep parade, wrote three books, became an historian at The Community Library and a maven on Ernest Hemingway’s life, played music in almost every bar in three towns, sold firewood and Christmas tree permits and mapped out wilderness trips for tourists at the Sawtooth National Recreational Area Headquarters visitor center. I found ways to make a living up here so that I could stay. You, too, can enjoy this wonderful mountain life whether you’re a novice carpenter or a full-fledged movie star. What does the future hold for the Wood River Valley? A bustling economy, a thriving airport dedicated to bringing more travel opportunities to the area, a shopping mall in the south county and perhaps even passenger walkways built over the streets. Businesses, bars and restaurants come and go, but there’s always opportunity for those with new ideas and a new plan. Maybe you’ll have the answer. We’re not alone anymore. First-rate entertainers perform here and elite athletes compete at world-class sporting events. Visitors are flocking in after another successful winter season. Maybe you’ll be one of those visitors. Should you decide to stay, I’ll be here to welcome you (and pull you out of the ditch if you need it.) TC

THE EDUCATION E EQUATION
ducation is a big part of the equation that makes life in and around Hailey so special and culturally rich, and it’s a big reason so many of us are happy to call this place home.
“We have a very active, supportive and involved community when it comes to education,” says Heather Crocker, the director of communications for the Blaine County School District. “People have high expectations and they should.”
A place known for being a playground prides itself on its school systems. BY MIKE MCKENNA

Weekly in-school community service projects supplement The Sage School's curricular focus on human ecology and support its mission to design programming that promotes student self-awareness, community responsibility and sense of place. 18
THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
The real strength of local education is the wide variety of options. The area is not just home to one of the best public school systems in the state, it’s also home to some of the finest private schools in the Northwest. With Hailey being such a family-focused community, there are also loads of great preschool options. The Blaine County School District (BCSD) serves over 3,300 students from kindergarten through high school, including a handful of elementary schools, one middle school and three high schools. With schools that serve the farming community of Carey, the bedroom communities of Bellevue and Hailey, and the resort towns of Ketchum and Sun Valley, the BCSD has a wide variety of needs to fill, and takes pride in fulfilling them. “Our mission for every single student is to have them feeling inspired and engaged,” Heather said. And it’s working. Graduation rates at Wood River High School are well above national averages and its considered one of the top five high schools in Idaho. The middle and elementary schools are also some of the best in the Gem State. Heather explained that there are many reasons for the success of students in Blaine County. It starts with smaller class sizes; a maxi-
mum of 20 for K–2 and 25 from 3–12. The school district is also strongly committed to early education, offering a preschool program at Hailey Elementary.
“There are plenty of choices here. We have opportunities for success for every single kid that walks through the door regardless of where they’re from.” – Heather Crocker, BCSD
The BSCD also offers an impressive and wide variety of programs that include everything from art, music, technology and physical education to special education needs and a variety of AP and college-credit options.
YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDS, WE TAKE CARE OF YOUR CARS.
There is also great community support, as the BCSD teams up with 40 local groups, such as the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, and the Wood River Land Trust, to help improve the lives and educations of the students.
Community School, in the town of Sun Valley, first opened in 1973 and has been sending difference-makers out into the world ever since. The mission of the private school is to provide a dynamic academic environment for students from pre-kindergarten through high school. The school takes pride in not only helping its few hundred students gain the skills and knowledge to be successful in life, but also guides them to become life-long learners who will lead impactful and purposeful lives.

One of Community School’s former teachers, Harry Weekes, is the founder of The Sage School. Harry decided to found the private school for the same reason his parents originally helped found Community School—he felt there was a need and a place for a different kind of education. Before starting The Sage School in 2009, Harry spent two decades teaching and researching topics ranging from how the environment enhances learning, to brain development, and wanted to continue his work, as he jokes, as an “aspiring adolescent anthropologist.” The small alternative high school and middle school has continued to grow. Starting with just 16 students, the school now has nearly 100. The students at the private day school are well known and very active within the community, which is part of its mission. The Sage School has partnerships with a couple dozen local, primarily nonprofit, organizations, and the rather unique campus even includes an attached greenhouse.
HAILEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
For younger students in search of a more outdoor and naturefocused education, Hailey is also home to the Syringa Mountain School. The public charter school provides a rigorous, arts-integrated curriculum inspired by Waldorf education in the public school setting. Class sizes for the kindergarten through-sixth-grade elementary school are held to just 25 students each, and their campus includes a biodynamic garden and a menagerie of animals including sheep, chickens and horses.
THE SAGE SCHOOL
On the other end of the education spectrum, Hailey is also proud to be home to the Blaine County branch of the College of Southern Idaho (CSI). Now in its third decade, CSI offers collegecredit courses as well as a wide variety of adult enrichment classes.

The original home campus was founded in Twin Falls in 1960. Thanks to the impassioned efforts of locals, CSI opened a branch in Hailey in 1985 that has been a huge asset to the community ever since.

Community School is well respected for its top-notch educators, exceptionally low student-to-staff ratios, and is also known for producing great athletes, thanks in part to their relationship with the world-renowned Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF). Community School even offers housing for student athletes.

It’s one of the big elements that makes life here so special, and has become a big part of why families love to live and move here. “We have people relocating here every year from all over the country and from many other countries,” Heather Crocker said. “There are plenty of choices here. We have opportunities for success for every single kid that walks through the door regardless of where they’re from. It’s something our community should be very proud of.” TC

project and has secured approximately $900,000 in donations and pledges. In FY 2015, the Foundation contributed over $522,137 to St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center and an additional $129,652 to community health nonprofit partners.
St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center is the only hospital within a 75-mile radius of Ketchum, Sun Valley, Hailey and Bellevue. SLWRMC maintains 25 inpatient beds with approximately 440 employees, 120 active volunteers and 45 physicians on active staff. Services range from OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Neurology, Orthopedics, and more as well as ENT, Gastroenterology, Urology, Cardiology, Oncology and more through visiting specialists. SLWRMC offers a full range of diagnostic laboratory testing: x-ray, CT, EEG, MRI as well as state-of-the-art 3D mammography at the Women’s Imaging Center. SLWRMC is part of St. Luke’s Health System which has multiple hospital campuses and a broad mix of diagnostic and clinical sites that together serve Southern Idaho and Eastern Oregon. Air St. Luke’s transports patients in critical situations via helicopter, fixed wing or ground transport. SLWRMC also utilizes telemedicine, particularly Tele-neurology, Tele-wound and Tele-ICU.
•
Our medical center is designated as a “Critical Access Hospital”—a hospital located at least 35 miles from any other hospital, with 25 patient beds or less.
•
St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center is the only facility in Idaho, of its size, to have board-certified emergency physicians providing care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
•
Since 2001, the hospital has received accreditation from the Joint Commission as a result of its demonstrated compliance with the Joint Commission’s nationally recognized healthcare standards. Only four of 26 critical access hospitals in Idaho have received accreditation from the Joint Commission.
•
The hospital-acquired infection rate at SLWRMC for 2015 was just 0.3 percent, far below the national benchmark of 3.2 percent.
In 2015, the hospital began construction on a $1.5 million project which will create a state-of-the art Oncology Infusion Services Department. Hospital Administration has been working closely with Mountain States Tumor Institute (MSTI) on the design and scope of services to be offered in the new space. The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation has committed to raise $1 million for this
•
Since 2003, the hospital has received awards for “Exceeding Patient Expectations” each year. The Emergency Department is also ranked in the top 5 percent of critical access hospitals by patients according to the Press Ganey Small Hospital Database. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016

Cody Langbehn, CEO St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center
s the CEO of St. Luke’s Wood River Med ic a l C enter (SLWRMC), I often interact with community members in a variety of settings regarding their experience with St. Luke’s. People’s comments frequently begin with complimenting our amazing state-of-the-art facility and then quickly expand to relay how their experience was made exceptional due to the attention and care given by one or more of our 425 dedicated employees.
Jerome. This new model has spurred several partnerships where specialists in the fields of Ear, Nose and Throat, Gastroenterology, Urology, General Surgery and Hospital Medicine now practice at multiple locations throughout the region to fill previously unmet community needs. Initiatives such as eICU and infusion services allow patients who would have otherwise had to leave the community for care to stay close to family and friends. St. Luke’s and all of us who get to be part of our organization play a rare and amazing role in the life of the community, providing a growing and expanding array of services with exceptional care and compassion, whether it be the birth of a child or saying goodbye to a loved one. I value all the relationships we’ve built together and look forward to those we’ll build going forward.
In the three and a half years I’ve had the privilege of serving as the administrator, I have witnessed how the scope of care at SLWRMC has expanded as a result of our being part of the greater St. Luke’s Health System. When St. Luke’s decided to form a governance and operating structure based on where patients seek their care, East and West regions of St. Luke’s were formed. SLWRMC became part of the East Region along with the hospitals in Twin Falls and

SUSTAINABILITY TAKES CENTER STAGE

ife is pretty special here in the Wood River Valley. With so much fun stuff to do, it’s easy to get so caught up in enjoying each day that you forget to look ahead. Luckily, there are several local organizations putting their time, energy and talents toward figuring out ways to sustain this truly blessed place we call home. Resiliency is a key factor in sustainability, and the Sun Valley Institute for Resilience (SVIR) is leading the charge. Founded in 2015, the nonprofit focuses on policy leadership, public engagement and targeted investments to advance the economic prosperity, environmental protection and human well-being in its home community of the Wood River Valley and beyond. To that end, the SVIR has been working with groups of all kinds tackling energy, water, food, environmental and community issues. As to why the organization decided to base its operations locally, their mission statement makes that clear: “From the original Native American inhabitants to the miners and ranchers of the valley’s early days, from the Union Pacific engineer who designed the world’s first chairlift to those who challenge themselves in its mountains and rivers today, Sun Valley is about history and tradition, grit and perseverance, well-being and quality of life. The risks, assets and values of Sun Valley make it the perfect home for an institute dedicated to resilience.” Another key to sustainability is access to affordable and healthy food. That’s where The Hunger Coalition comes in. The local food bank led the recent Blaine County Community Food Assessment, a study that looked at the state of the local food system. With regard to what’s growing in Blaine County, they found the majority of arable land is being used for livestock, barley and hay. While our mountain climate does limit some farming options, greenhouse and technology-based solutions can significantly extend the growing sea28

son. The study concluded that there is great untapped potential to create a sustainable, local food system. The region just south of our valley, the Snake River Plain, is one of the largest “bread baskets” in the nation. Within a relatively short drive from Hailey you can find everything from Idaho’s “Famous Potatoes” and the nation’s largest trout farm to some of the best lamb and beef in the country, to factories for Clif Bar foods and Chobani yogurt. There are also dozens of smaller farms throughout the region, many of which participate at the farmers markets in Ketchum and Hailey each June through October. These farmers and ranchers also sell their goods throughout the year at local grocery stores and the Wood River Sustainability Center in Hailey. Besides offering a small market and popular monthly “Farm to Table Dinners,” the Sustainability Center serves “super-local, healthy lunches,” as owner Al McCord calls them, to students at the Syringa Mountain School. The Sustainability Center also teams up with The Hunger Coalition to bring healthy lunches to disadvantaged kids throughout the county during the summer months. “If something is grown, processed and produced within 250 miles, that’s local to me. It means I can still drive down there and check out their operation, meet the farmers or ranchers and see what they’re all about,” Al said. “What we do is really about connection. It’s about bringing people together. We connect people with their food, where it came from and who produced it.” It’s easy to feel pretty lucky when you get to live in the Wood River Valley. That’s why there are some strong local groups trying to do everything they can to sustain and enhance our home. TC

TAKING CARE OF OUR LAND
The Wood River Land Trust has a simple mission: Protect and restore land, water and wildlife habitat in the Wood River Valley and its surrounding area—now and for the future. Originally founded in 1994, the Land Trust has now protected more than 25,000 acres and manages 15 preserves in the region. But the great news for locals and visitors alike is that they don’t just save land for the flora and fauna. As executive director Scott Boettger explains, “One of our major goals is to not just protect nature, but to make it accessible and enjoyable for people, too.”
To that end, the Wood River Land Trust offers several preserves along the Big Wood River that are open to the public. The Draper Preserve in Hailey, the Howard Preserve in Bellevue and Boxcar Bend Preserve in mid-valley are all popular spots for families, dog walkers and fishermen. The Land Trust also sponsors the Trout Friendly Lawn Program and puts on all kinds of free landscaping and gardening workshops each spring and summer. For a full rundown of local preserves and free programs the Land Trust offers, please check out woodriverlandtrust.org or visit their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages and you’ll see why so many folks #LovetheLandTrust! Old Triumph Mine Tipple Triumph was the location of the famous Triumph mine, which closed in 1957 after a history of producing millions of dollars in silver and lead since its discovery in the late nineteenth century.
East of Bellevue, the early mining settlement of Muldoon is evidenced only by a black slag pile and vestiges of 23 charcoal kilns. West of town along Broadford Road lie the remains of the Minnie Moore and Queen of the Hills mines. Queen of the Hills was actively mined until 1970. From a distance, little can be seen of the remains of the mines of Boulder Basin north of Ketchum. A steep jeep trail leads to Boulder Basin north of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters. The site includes several old cabins, diggings of old mines, mining equipment, and amazing views. It’s a tough trek, but well worth the trip. Galena, the earliest mine in the area, was established by David Ketchum. It is easily accessible from Highway 75. The lodge, situated on the old town site, has been remodeled and today serves tasty meals to visitors. Cabins and a network of biking and cross-country skiing trails now sit on what is left of the town.
LEAD, GOLD AND SILVER–OH MY! BY JENNIFER STAHL
The Wood River Valley is a place with a long and colorful history. One of the most notable chapters is the late-nineteenth-century mining boom that drew fortune hunters from far and wide to this rugged part of Idaho. Numerous small towns and settlements sprang up to accommodate the thousands of people working in mines. Today, only three mining towns from that era remain in the Wood River Valley—Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue. However, several mining “ghost towns” are still accessible to those interested in local history. The easiest of these to find is Triumph, located 12 miles from Hailey on East Fork Road. The Triumph mine was mined until 1957, and a huddle of small houses (most of which are original buildings) still form the core of the community along with old mining cars and mining structures.
In 1880, when silver was discovered in the mountain gulches near the Wood River, the valley surged with miners, merchants, mule skinners, gamblers and desperados. They lived in hastily built cabins and tents as saloons and stores were being constructed. The first year was one of prospecting and laying out claims. North of Galena, east of Ketchum and west of Hailey, boom towns were rising from the dirt. Nineteen different mines shipped more than 600 tons of ore by wagon to Kelton and then by rail to Salt Lake City. Most miners spent the winter in Bellevue, where there was access to a store, a restaurant, a blacksmith and a saloon. The miners skied by day, danced by night, and stuffed themselves with venison. Isaac Lewis was the first to invest money and mining equipment in the Wood River Valley. The largest and most successful smelter was the Philadelphia smelter at the mouth of Warm Springs Creek in Ketchum. Until the arrival of the railroad in 1883, travel and transport were limited to stagecoach, wagon and horseback, making the export of ore both difficult and expensive. Railroads caused prices to drop both to import goods and export ore, further enhancing the economics of the time. The low price of silver and the depression of 1893 ended the mining boom of the Wood River Valley, although a few mines remained active into the 1950s and 1960s. TC

Hailey is also home to The Inn at Ellsworth Estate— a bed-and-breakfast property built in 1920 as a home for a British oil company heir. Today, the property boasts nine guest rooms, gourmet breakfasts, two acres of lovely grounds, a wrap-around porch and a tennis court. A few miles south in Bellevue, the High Country Motel offers pet-friendly accommodations. Free wi-fi is available, and some of the rooms have kitchenettes.

ining options are plentiful throughout the Wood River Valley. While some of the area’s restaurants have anchored the restaurant scene for years, new favorites add a vitality and diversity usually reserved for larger cities. You’ll find a full list of epic dining options in local publications, Sun Valley Source and Taste, both on newsstands all over the valley.
SOUTH VALLEY
Start your day at one of Hailey’s coffeehouses: Java on First Avenue, The Coffee House on the north end of town or Hailey Coffee Company on Main Street. If you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast head to Shorty’s Diner, a flashback to the 1950s with its big booths and period décor. The nearby Jersey Girl Café offers a range of options for both breakfast and lunch. During the summer, outdoor patios are prime at places like DaVinci’s, Power House, The Wicked Spud, or Wiseguy Pizza Pie and KB’s Hailey in Bullion Square. In addition to its lovely outdoor space, CK’s Real Food is known for its use of local and seasonal ingredients and draws inspiration from cuisines around the world. Sawtooth Brewery will open a tap house and brewing facility on River Street early this summer, and the Power House offers craft beers and great pub food alongside bike sales and repair. Have a craving for ethnic food? Chapalitas Grill, Huitzo’s and Lago Azul offer a variety of Mexican favorites. Thai food fans should be sure to check out Taste of Thai next to the Liberty Theatre as well as the popular and recently expanded Dang’s Thai Cuisine & Sushi Bar. Bellevue’s Silver Dollar Saloon and Mahoney’s Bar & Grill anchor a downtown area that includes a diverse selection of restaurants. Located in an A-frame building that once resided in Ketchum, Brandie’s Kitchen is open for breakfast and lunch. Oak Street Foods is a local favorite for its tasty sandwiches, soups, dine-in, catering and takehome fare. South Valley Pizzeria regularly receives bestin-the-valley accolades for its creative pizza options, and Bellevue’s newest restaurant, Vittles, offers fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Rounding out the options, The Silver Dragon offers authentic Chinese food and La Cabanita serves up the best tasty Mexican dishes.
NORTH VALLEY
Ketchum’s restaurant landscape features everything from fine dining at the Ketchum Grill, The Sawtooth Club and Michel’s Christiania to pub food at Grumpy’s, Lefty’s and The Cellar Pub. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at The Kneadery or try out the steaks at the ever-popular Pioneer Saloon. If you simply can’t do without your morning coffee, pick up a Starbucks lattè inside the Sun Valley Visitor Center or grab some joe at the unique gathering space at Velocio, both on Sun Valley Road. Ketchum also has several mobile options for the adventurous diner. For fresh fare that regularly changes, check out The Haven’s big green bus, usually found on the corner of 7th Street and Warm Springs Road. During the summer months, Irving’s Red Hots sits atop the grassy hill on Main Street offering a mountain-town version of people-watching and al fresco dining. In the winter, you’ll find them at the base of Warm Springs.

ailey’s location in the heart of the Wood River Valley offers residents and visitors alike a perfect place to enjoy a tremendous variety of camping options. Whether you choose to camp in a tent, a trailer or an RV, there is truly something for everyone. The great blessings of our wild surroundings are one the many reasons to live in or visit Hailey. Five major mountain ranges border the area, and the high desert spills away to the south and west. Whether you choose to visit a developed campground, a dispersed site or a backpacking location, the camping opportunities available to you are as varied as the terrain. You can rush out the door to get away from it all and still be back in time to face your daily responsibilities on Monday morning—bright-eyed and with a spring in your step from having experienced the joy of overnighting outdoors.
and along the Salmon River, including a handful of locations on the highway west of Stanley (approximately one hour from Hailey). Many of these camping areas provide water and bathrooms during season, but be advised that many do not have trailer hook-ups. If a hook-up is required, be sure to double-check the available amenities of your campsite before heading out. Detailed and comprehensive information on fee locations and descriptions of areas for dispersed camping can be obtained at the USFS ranger station in Ketchum, SNRA headquarters north of Ketchum and the Stanley Ranger Station located in the Sawtooth Valley. These offices—as well as local outdoors retailers in Hailey and Ketchum—can provide information and recommendations for those interested in backpacking the local areas. TC
Those interested in hiking for solitude need only load up their pack and make their way to the trailhead. Whether you’re an outdoors newbie or a grizzled mountain man, you’ll find a plethora of local trails that will take a lifetime to explore. Each time out offers new locations to discover, and you’ll find yourself daydreaming of the time when you can replenish the GORP in your pack, tighten your boots and head out again!

rom the moment the Campion Ice House opened its doors, hundreds—even thousands—have rushed to support and enjoy this long-overdue facility. Located at the gateway to the city, the building is nestled in the same campus that houses Hailey's visitor center, rodeo grounds, and nationally-known skatepark that draws enthusiasts from around the Pacific Northwest.
place to watch hockey games or learn ice skating and curling, the Campion Ice House has elevated the community with a welcome surge of economic activity. Sarah Benson, director of Hailey Ice, predicts that the rink will attract 7,000 unique skaters over the course of one winter season and bring as many as 300 people each weekend into local hotels, restaurants and shops—all during times when the area is not typically busy. Thanks in large part to the generosity of longtime Wood River Valley resident Lynn Campion-Waddell, Hailey Ice has finally reached a goal once thought unattainable. Campion-Waddell’s family foundation—the Deer Creek Fund of the Denver-based Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation—made a $4 million gift to help realize the dreams of many within our community. “Our foundation considers this gift to be a wise investment in our community,” said Campion-Waddell. “If kids and families from the south valley have easy access to ice for at least six months a year, what could be better? The rink can be used for other activities in the summer months, bringing in more revenue to help our local economy.” The Idaho Mountain Express most certainly got it right when they reported, "The future of the Ice House was foretold the day it opened. Hundreds of people thronged the ice at the grand opening. They demonstrated that the primary risk for its future is being loved to death." TC
Local nonprofit Hailey Ice has nurtured the dream of an ice house for years. Starting with a group of dedicated parents who, year after year, would flood a nearby park to create ice when the weather turned cold, the organization has long sought to provide an affordable ice-sports facility in Hailey. The realization of this dream ran into numerous setbacks over the years, including a downturn in the economy and the loss of a major donor. Following its November 2015 grand opening, the facility met and exceeded all expectations. Offering much more than a great THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016

A GOOD INVESTMENT IN LIFE
Why real estate in Blaine County is so popular BY MIKE MCKENNA

he great thing about buying a home in Hailey, or anywhere else in Blaine County for that matter, is that it’s not just a good investment in real estate—it’s a good investment in life.
That’s because lifestyle is the number one reason people love to live in our small mountain community. "People move here for the lifestyle, that’s the draw, that and our great school systems," says Debra Hall. Debra, who is the former president of the Hailey Chamber of Commerce and vice president of the Sun Valley Board of Realtors, says that the local market has been historically solid and continues to be so after recovering from the national economic challenges last decade. She said there are several reasons local real estate continues to be a good investment. The first is that the active, healthy and high quality of life in Hailey and the other communities in the Wood River Valley is very enjoyable. And any time you make a choice to be happier, it’s a pretty wise investment. No matter where you live around here, from Ketchum and Sun Valley to the north, or Hailey, Bellevue or Carey to the south—or anywhere in between—world-class hiking, mountain biking, skiing and fishing are right out your back door.

“It’s a great place to invest and an even better place to live.” –Debra Hall “And any time you make a choice to be happier, it’s a pretty wise investment.” –Mike McKenna Another big reason for the area’s traditionally strong and consistent property valuation is because Blaine County is home to some of the best schools in the state. The solid and varied educational opportunities also help lay the foundation for cultural and restaurant scenes that are surprisingly vibrant, especially for a place so far off the beaten path. The pleasant high-desert climate in our section of the Northern Rockies is also tough to top. It may get cold and snowy in the winter, but there’s low humidity and plenty of sunshine. They didn’t name the local ski resort—and America’s first—Sun Valley for nothing. The long summer days are pretty special.

At Blaine County Title, we take our jobs seriously.
Direct flight access from Hailey to cities like Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Denver is another enticing part of Blaine County's appeal.
When investing, peace of mind, professionalism, confidentiality and efficiency are paramount in every step of the closing process.
“Even though you’re in a small town in the mountains, it’s easy to be in a big city in no time. You can hop right in or right out,” says Debra, who notes that property in Blaine County is also known for having a low tax rate, while still maintaining appropriately high values.

Outdoor activities, along with the top-notch local education options, are the main reasons why real estate is popular here, especially for families and retirees, grandparents and ski bums who don’t want to waste any time waiting in lift lines—something unheard of (other than opening day) at Sun Valley or for the single ski lift at Rotarun in Hailey.

Regardless of the value of the home you're looking for, buying one in Blaine County is always a good investment. The lifestyle of a small town with great culture and recreation right out your door, plus the great schools, the accessibility the airport offers, the mountains, the river, the clean air is tough to beat. It’s a great place to invest and an even better place to live. TC

Hailey and the rest of the Wood River Valley are HOT!
THE VALLEY’S COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET BY PAUL KENNY, BROKER
We’d like to help keep everything cool in your next Real Estate Transaction!
T
here are many examples of momentum and strong recovery in the Wood River Valley’s commercial real estate market. Sales and leasing activity have maintained a steady pace, and the buyers and lessees are solid, established businesses that appreciate that the time is right to invest in our market. In our office alone, dollar volume of transacted leases has increased by 33 percent over the past year, and our closed commercial sale dollar volume has increased by 33 percent on an annual basis, as well. In 2014, we transacted 56 commercial leases and facilitated 11 commercial property sales. In 2015, we completed 60 commercial leases and 17 commercial property sales.

THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
As commercial specialists, we constantly field inquiries from businesses that want to invest, purchase, lease, move, expand, or consult about the state of the local market. Starting in July 2014 we began to see growing interest from entrepreneurs and businesses outside the area—interest that continues to increase exponentially. Three examples are the Colorado entities that recently moved into town: Aspen Ski Company is building the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum; HayMax Capital, LLC of Aspen acquired the Tamarack Lodge in December 2015; and Village Markets of Colorado and Utah expanded their business to Ketchum’s Main Street last fall. Existing businesses are improving their properties with remodels, new leases are being signed, and many tenants are renewing and/ or extending their leases. Commercial rental space absorption has changed the negotiation process for lease space throughout the valley. Rents have risen by at least 25 percent in the last year, and tenants feel a sense of urgency to grab their desired location. Landlords now have choices in tenant selection and a renewed confidence in the strength of the commercial rental market. In recent weeks we have been approached by no fewer than six real estate investors with spendable dollars in the seven-to-eight-figure range who want to invest here. These investors sense the vibrancy of the market, recognize the value in our commercial properties and feel it’s time to make a move. All of this is very good news—especially for Hailey. As the Wood River Valley’s residential hub, Hailey stands to benefit greatly from this economic activity. The recent development of community assets like the rodeo arena and the Campion Ice House at the entrance to the city are just the beginning. The future indeed looks bright! TC

THE MOUNTAINS
A LITTLE BIT OF PARADISE
The incredible recreational opportunities in the Wood River Valley offer something for everyone—after all, that’s the reason most of us live here! BY CARSON JOHNSTON AND PAUL HOPFENBECK
62
THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
Sun Valley proper was developed by lifelong skier and chairman of Union Pacific Railroad, Averell Harriman. The story began in the fall of 1936 with the world’s first chairlift. The destination had plentiful dry snow, an abundance of blue-sky days and steep, mountainous terrain—the perfect location for the resort. Bald Mountain boasts impressive acreage and vertical feet, while Dollar Mountain offers beginner slopes, an intense terrain park and a half-pipe. Also known as “Nordic Town USA,” the Wood River Valley has an extensive cross-country ski trail system and was recently named a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site for nordic, alpine, freestyle, freeskiing and snowboarding.
BIKING
In the summer months, Bald Mountain transforms into a mountain biking mecca and takes on another nickname—“Single-Track Heaven.” With Baldy as the new biking centerpiece, the area offers over 400 miles of world-class single-track bike trails. The mountain offers lift access to the top, but make sure you know what you are getting yourself into because this is not mountain biking for the faint of heart. If you’re looking for something a little less extreme, there are 32 miles of paved bike path running from Bellevue to north of Ketchum. Take a short journey out Croy Canyon and you’ll find a pump track and opportunities for motor biking, as well.
FISHING
The Big Wood River runs right through the middle of the valley and offers 25 miles of exceptional fishing. Methods and rules vary, so please check with Idaho Fish and Game about permits and regulations. At the south end of the valley, Silver Creek Preserve is considered one of the world’s premier blue-ribbon spring creeks. Dry-fly fishing with light, long tippets for large browns and rainbows can offer a mighty challenge for even the most experienced angler. Penny Lake in the north valley and Gavers Lagoon at Hayspur Fish Hatchery in the south valley near Picabo offer easily accessible waters and plenty of “stockers,” ensuring a memorable outing for the novice angler. The valley’s most popular fishing destination is Magic Reservoir, one of the finest still-water fisheries in the state. By boat or bank, the trout, bass, and yellow perch are plentiful... and delicious!
fax it copy it print it shred it design it notarize it you name it... HUNTING
The public lands surrounding the Wood River Valley support some of the largest and healthiest elk and deer herds in the state. License and tag fees are very reasonable. For avid bird hunters, the varied terrain and habitats in the area offer a multitude of opportunity. The sage hills hold quality numbers of chukar and partridge while the bony ridges of those same hills are home to large populations of blue grouse. The lower elevations offer fine early-autumn shooting for mourning dove, Hungarian partridge and the iconic sage hen. Water fowlers enjoy great success on the Big Wood River, Silver Creek and Magic Reservoir. If you are interested in target shooting, the valley boasts three high-quality ranges that offer everything from rifle and pistol facilities, to fun and challenging sporting clay courses, wobble trap, skeet, and certified shooting instruction. Sun Valley Gun Club in the north valley and Hurtig Shooting Center in the mid-valley are open to the public and offer both instruction and loaner guns.

WATER SPORTS
The Wood River Valley offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water. The Big Wood River is a huge attraction during the heat of the summer. Although not big enough to launch a full-size raft, the river is perfect for inner tubes, kayaks, and float toys of all sorts on a hot summer day. Be aware of log jams—they call it the Big Wood for a reason! Natural hot springs are scattered throughout the area and there is nothing quite like a soak in a natural hot spring. SUMMER OR WINTER, BCRD IS RECREATION
T
he Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD) is a nonprofit organization offering residents and visitors access to the myriad recreational opportunities we enjoy seasonally. Whether it's Nordic skiing on the North Valley trails, around Galena Lodge or in Hailey’s Croy Canyon, or swimming at the BCRD Aquatic Center, BCRD is committed to improving the quality of life in Blaine County through recreation while working to meet the needs of a growing community. Established in 1976 by a group of visionary citizens, BCRD has helped make the Wood River Valley a safe, healthy and enjoyable place to work and live. Its core recreational facilities include a fitness center, gymnasium and aquatic center at its headquarters in the Community Campus next to Wood River High School in Hailey. Additionally, BCRD manages the beloved Wood River Trail; fondly known as the “bike path,” this 20-mile artery runs from Bellevue to north of Ketchum, connecting neighborhoods to cities and cities to each other. Additionally, BCRD owns and maintains Galena Lodge, a seasonal day lodge located 23 miles north of Ketchum. The historic Lodge was originally founded as a mining town in 1879 and during its heyday had a population of over 800. Today, the Lodge serves as a home base as visitors explore the surrounding mountains on Nordic skis in the winter and by foot or mountain bike when the weather begins to warm. For the ultimate mountain experience, reserve one of Galena’s year-round yurts. Fully equipped with a woodstove for heat, a kitchen, lantern and utensils, the Galena yurts are ready when you are for a taste of backcountry living. ailey and the Wood River Valley have become a mecca for retirees, boasting a high quality of life for seniors. The same mountain scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities that attract tourists to the area also draw active people who have retired from the nine-to-five workplace and are looking to enjoy the good life. In 2014, 15.8 percent of the population of Blaine County was over 65 versus 14.8 percent for the State of Idaho as a whole. Leisure activities abound in the Wood River Valley with exceptional libraries, continuing education, indoor and outdoor recreation, music and artistic opportunities. Community libraries in Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue offer a great selection of books, audio CDs, DVDs and digital resources, as well as additional programs including speakers, classes, festivals, art displays, book clubs and regional history collections. The Community Campus in Hailey houses two organizations which serve the active retiree as well as the entire community: The College of Southern Idaho (CSI) and Blaine County Recreation Dis-

A great place to live.
THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY PROVIDES A RICH ENVIRONMENT FOR RETIREES TO ENJOY AND PARTICIPATE IN ART AND CULTURE. The BCRD’s Fitworks facility offers a complete fitness gym and a multitude of classes encompassing spinning, yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais and body sculpting. The BCRD also manages the Wood River Trail system, a paved multi-use trail that stretches a distance of 20 miles from Bellevue to Hulen Meadows north of Ketchum. Nordic skiing, adult sports programs, and an outdoor aquatic center with master’s swimming and aquarobics classes round out the BCRD’s offerings for the active senior. The Wood River YMCA in Ketchum offers an indoor pool along with a variety of fitness, lecture and enrichment classes.

The Wood River Valley provides a rich environment for retirees to enjoy and participate in art and culture. The Wood River Orchestra and Caritas Chorale provide community members with opportunities to express their musical talents. Company of Fools, housed in Hailey's Liberty Theatre, provides an active schedule of classes and productions while the Sun Valley Center for the Arts supports visual arts, live theater, film, education and humanities in both Hailey and Ketchum. The Sun Valley Summer Symphony, Sun Valley Resort and many private theater groups and galleries offer myriad opportunities to enjoy art and culture throughout the year. The Connection in Hailey provides support services for older adults. It is a community center for persons of all ages, providing meals, transportation, activities and supportive in-home services for older adults such as transportation and home health. Home Connection is a senior move management program that benefits those who need to downsize or relocate from a larger home to more appropriate housing. Assistance is provided to older adults and their families to help with the emotional and physical aspects of relocation and/or aging in place. Idaho offers several tax benefits to retirees that make it an even more attractive place to live. Although Sandra Block of the Kiplinger Letter gives Idaho a mixed rating in its treatment of retirees, residents pay no income tax on Social Security benefits. There is also a real estate exemption of 50 percent of the assessed value for a primary residence. The top tax rate of 7.4 percent applies to taxable income of $21,436 and above for joint filers. There is also a generous retirement-benefits deduction for those with qualifying public pensions. TC

THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY AND WHAT MAKES US TICK BY RICHARD STAHL
A
t one time it was mining, and later it was ranching, but today, tourism and leisure is the engine that makes the economy of the Wood River Valley tick. Since 1936, the Sun Valley Resort has been marketing the area’s stunning mountain scenery, clean air and water, and plentiful winter snow to the rest of the United States. There were 345,000 visitors to the Wood River Valley in 2014, accounting for 78 percent of the region’s $1.8 billion local gross domestic product (GDP).
RESORT IMPACT
Lodging has a $559 million total economic impact on the area, or 31 percent of total GDP. This includes the direct impact of the cost of lodging and spending on food, entertainment and other items.
On average, Sun Valley Resort employs 1,000 people, with somewhat higher numbers during the busy winter ski season and summer months. The resort offers lodging at the recently remodeled Sun Valley Lodge (94 rooms) and Sun Valley Inn (105 rooms), along 68
THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
with skiing, golfing, fitness facilities and shopping. The resort has attracted many other hotels and retail shopping to nearby Ketchum and Hailey. Within a year’s time, two new resort hotels will be opening in the area—the 99-room Limelight Hotel and the 65-room Auberge Resorts hotel.
SECOND HOME DEVELOPMENT
Blaine County’s 4,766 seasonal housing units contribute even more to the local economy, with a total economic impact of $650 million, or 36 percent of the total GDP in 2014. These second homeowners spend money on construction, home maintenance, furnishings and various other services. Second homes in the area range from modest condominiums to multi-million dollar mansions.
THE OTHER ECONOMY
The remaining $395 million in GDP includes agriculture, manufacturing and service industries with a national market. Hailey is home to several such businesses. Power Engineers employs over 250 people at its Hailey facility, providing consulting services and
engineering design in energy, food and beverage, facilities, communications, environmental, and federal markets. Marketron, also located in Hailey, offers innovative software solutions to the media industry. Local manufacturing industries are very small with fewer than 50 employees each. There are 186 farms in Blaine County, with 109 providing the primary livelihood for the owner. The Wood River Valley’s agricultural products had a market value of $38,572,000 in 2012, primarily consisting of beef, hay and barley production.
EMPLOYMENT
According to the U.S. Census, non-agricultural employment in Blaine County totaled 11,530 in 2014. The largest employment sector was in leisure/hospitality with 24 percent of total employment. This percentage varies widely in the valley, ranging from a high of 75 percent in Sun Valley to zero in Carey. Retail is the next largest employment sector with 16 percent. Professional, government and construction follow with 13, 12 and 12 percent, respectively. The county’s roughly 300 manufacturing jobs and 407 agricultural and mining jobs are reflected in the other employment category, which reflects approximately 10 percent of total employment. Direct agricultural employment by the county’s ranches and farms is not reported by the census, but was estimated to be 392 in 2012 by the Idaho Department of Labor. A WHOLE NEW MEANING FOR IDAHO LUMBER
"Yeah, we know the nickname—in fact, we think it's pretty funny, only because really, we know lumber! We know lots of other stuff, too." –Todd & Angi Hunter PHOTO BY CARSON JOHNSTON

P
icking up and relocating your entire family can be exciting and it can be terrifying. Todd and Angi Hunter left it all behind in Frisco, Texas (a suburb of Dallas), six months ago in search of the right mountain town. The Wood River Valley is like no other when it comes to welcoming new faces and making them feel right at home. This family jumped in with all 10 feet and are pretty psyched they did.
When did you move to Hailey? We moved in two parts: Todd, Cash and Lennon in January and Angi and Gavin in February.
Why Hailey? Honestly, because it reminded us both of the small towns where we grew up. Todd grew up in Easttern Idaho and has always had a great appreciation for his home state, and of course the mountains!
Had you ever visited Hailey before? Todd and his father hunted in this area years ago but Angi's first visit was in October of 2015.
How did you come to find out that Idaho Lumber was for sale? Todd was looking for business opportunities on the Web. He's always had an interest in do-it-yourself projects and he seems to have a bit of a hardware store habit.
Anything new planed for the business? We are creating a design center in our mezzanine area to give
contractors and customers a venue to explore products for a variety of projects. We will also be adding new product lines in several areas throughout the year that will be promoted on the Web and through social media. Providing top-rate service to our customers is our primary focus. Ensuring that our customers Todd, Cash, Lennon and Gavin and employees are able to haven't wasted any time getting get what they need, when to know local fishing holes. they need it, can make all the difference. In some cases it means empowering our staff to make important decisions and in others it's knowing what the customer is working on and how to help them when they walk in the door. Making sure that we are offering what our customers really need and want is important to us. And, of course, making sure everyone knows "We Know Lumber!"
What is your favorite discovery about the Wood River Valley? A couple of things... first, that for a small valley, there is so much available to do and discover! Second, that people here think the drive between Hailey and Ketchum is long!

What would you like to change about Idaho Lumber? Its nickname: "I don't know lumber"—YES, we really do!!
What has been the most memorable experience since your move to Hailey? It hasn't even been six months but we are loving all the new experiences the family is logging. Whether it's on the mountain or a skill in the classroom or lesson in the "owning your own business" realm, we are embracing the opportunities to learn new things in a new space.
How can the community get involved with Idaho Lumber? How was the community when you arrived? The people are really friendly. The other small-business owners have been incredibly welcoming and encouraging from the business side. On the personal side, the boys' school Syringa Mountain School. played a really big part in the boys transition to a new school. Our kids are our first priority, so it was really a compassionate, welcoming and open environment that they created for us; they helped our family in a big way through small gestures.
How has the business transition been? Our experience buying the business has been amazing. The Idaho Lumber staff has been incredible in our transition. Carter Minor in particular has shown tremendous leadership and support. We look forward to a long, productive relationship with our team!
Let us know what you need and what you'd like to see from us! We love customer and community feedback.
How do you plan to support the community? We are quickly jumping into all the community events and offerings. We love the Hailey Chamber, the schools, the organizations and our brother and sister small business owners. We live and shop local and we commit to represent the Valley as business owners and community members.
What was the hardest part about moving to Hailey and buying a business? The hardest part was leaving behind our support network of friends and family. However, Hailey has welcomed us in a way we never dreamed. TC

A FEW PLACES WE THINK ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD.
CRATERS OF THE MOON
A
short 55-minute road trip from Hailey lies a landscape like something from another world—Craters of the Moon. The Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is over 1,117 square miles in size, featuring 60 lava flows and 25 cinder cones that measure up to 820 feet high. Lava eruptions occurred in this area from 15,000 to just 2,000 years ago, leaving a stark landscape with little vegetation. Craters of the Moon National Monument was proclaimed on May 2, 1924 by U.S. President Calvin Coolidge to "preserve the unusual and weird volcanic formations." Today, Craters of the Moon provides visitors with a modern visitor center and a 7-mile loop road to view the unique landscape. Marked hiking trails take adventurous visitors into less accessible areas, while the loop road features convenient pull-offs with shorter paved paths and interpretive signs. There’s lots to do here, with lava caves to explore (with a free permit), cinder cones to climb, and wheelchair-accessible trails into the lava fields. In the spring, alpine flowers bloom; in the winter, the loop trail is closed but cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails are open. Camping and picnicking sites are also available at Craters of the Moon. The visitor center features informative videos and interpretive exhibits as well as a book/gift shop and vending machines. Food and fuel are available in Carey (25 miles to the west) and in Arco (19 miles to the east) along Route 20. The closest lodging is in Hailey. To get to Craters of the Moon from the Wood River Valley, follow Route 75 south of Bellevue to Route 20. Turn left and continue east to Craters of the Moon, a distance of 54 miles. STANLEY & THE SNRA
W
hile travel time from Ketchum to Stanley is slightly over an hour (1 hour and 12 minutes), there is so much to do along this route that visitors will want to break the trip into several day trips to take it all in. Some of the attractions along Route 75 between Ketchum and Stanley include the Boulder Mountains, the SNRA Visitor Center, the Harriman Trail, Galena Lodge, Galena Summit, Smiley Creek Lodge, Redfish Lake and 730,864 acres of protected federal land. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) Visitor Center lies 12 miles north of Ketchum on Route 75 and stretches to Stanley, 49 miles to the north. The Visitor Center provides information on the flora and fauna of the area, trail and camping information, maps and a gift shop. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the SNRA holds a plethora of recreational opportunities, from hot springs and Nordic skiing to rock climbing and bird watching. The SNRA was established in 1972 and includes the Sawtooth Wilderness and the recently authorized Hemingway–Boulders and White Clouds wilderness areas.
76
THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2016
Galena Lodge, at the southern base of Galena Summit in the Boulder Mountains, was remodeled in the 1960s using lumber from the original 1880s mining town and cabins. Today the comfortable lodge is the perfect spot for lunches, rentals, weddings and as a base for outdoor recreation—cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter and hiking and mountain biking in summer. As one crosses Galena Summit, the majestic Sawtooth Mountains jag upward in the distance. Hundreds of alpine lakes, trails, streams and spectacular views blitz the senses. It’s a quiet place, even on the highway, where wildflowers, wild animals, and birds call out. From Route 75 there is easy access to Stanley, Alturas, and Pettit lakes for camping and boating. Redfish Lake has camping sites, cabins, a lodge, restaurant and marina. Off-roading, particularly snowmobiling, is popular here, but be sure to take your SNRA map with you—it’s easy to get lost in such wild country. Snowmobile rentals are available at Smiley Creek Lodge and in Stanley. Stanley, a town of just 63 according to the 2010 U.S. Census, is a perfect getaway destination. To quote the Stanley-Sawtooth Chamber of Commerce, “Stanley, Idaho, is one of the last strongholds of the Idaho frontier. Unaffected, pristine, and planted at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains on the banks of the Salmon River, it’s nestled in an amphitheater of rarely found natural beauty. This is a place that will leave an indelible impression on you from the moment you enter.” Stanley offers food, lodging, fuel and shopping. The Stanley Bakery is a popular spot for breakfast on the deck. Have a beer and a burger at The Sluice or gas up at Mountain Village Mercantile. It’s also an ideal starting point for any outdoor adventure—rock climbing, whitewater rafting, fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking or backpacking. Hot springs abound in the area, offering a relaxing way to end a long day.

Stanley lies near the headwaters of the famous "River of No Return," the Salmon River. Sockeye, steelhead and Chinook still return each year to Redfish Lake and nearby streams to spawn and to tempt anglers. To get to Stanley, follow Route 75 north from Ketchum for 61 miles. TRAIL CREEK AND I SUMMIT CREEK ROAD
f you Google "Trail Creek Road," you’ll find several intriguing posts: "Central Idaho’s Best Shortcut," and a YouTube video titled, "Our terrifying drive through Trail Creek Road – Idaho." The trip from Ketchum to Phi Kappa campground is a great backcountry adventure, taking the traveler up a winding dirt and gravel road to Trail Creek Summit (elevation 7,896 feet) and then slowly down the other side following beautiful Summit Creek. Trail Creek Road is a shortcut to places like Challis and Mackay along Route 93 in the Lost River drainage, cutting about 40 miles off the route through Stanley.
This short 15-mile drive features some of the best mountain scenery in the area and access to quiet picnicking, hiking and camping spots. Those with off-road capabilities will enjoy side trips on the many jeep roads in the Pioneer Mountains. Phi Kappa Mine is particularly interesting, involving a narrow twisting climb up to the old mine. Trail Creek Road continues on to more places to explore, like Hyndman Peak (12,009 feet), Copper Basin or Idaho’s tallest peak, Mt. Borah (12,662 feet). This trip is not about the destination, but about the exploration (Mt. Borah is an additional 41 miles). Sun Valley Road continues northeast out of Ketchum and Sun Valley, past the Ernest Hemingway Memorial, becoming Trail Creek Road. Trail Creek Road is closed from about November 1 (or first snow) until May 1 when road crews clear the winter snow and avalanche damage. There are no services available on this trip, so pack a lunch and lots of water. Pit toilets may be found at Forest Service campgrounds. The road is passable by automobile but is not RV-friendly. Additional information may be obtained from the Ketchum Ranger District at 208-622-5371.
