The SVSEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing exceptional snow sports programs for the youth of the Wood River Valley. The primary goals of our programs are to assist each participant in reaching his/her athletic potential, while developing strong personal character and positive values. ❅❅❅❅❅❅❅ WHAT ARE SVSEF’S FUNDRAISING GOALS IN 2011-2012?
Our goal for the coming season is to raise $550,000. We hope to achieve this through our Annual Fund Drive, the Fall Game Dinner, and the Janss Pro-Am. Additionally, we will strive to raise $100,000 for our scholarship programs which help to pay for tuition and travel expenses.

ADMINISTRATION
The Engl Training Center - Located at the base of Warm Springs, the Engl Training Center provides lockers, tuning, and waxing facilities for our Alpine, Snowboard, and Freestyle Teams, and office space for the administration. The Lake Creek Training Center - The Lake Creek Training Center is located at the Lake Creek Trailhead and provides lockers, waxing space, and an indoor strength facility for our Cross-Country Team. The Quigley Nordic Facility - Located at the Quigley Canyon Cross-Country Center, this temporary facility provides ski storage and office space for SVSEF’s Quigley Cross-Country team members.

HOW DOES THE SVSEF USE MY DONATION?
Annual Fund donations help support general operating costs of the SVSEF. These include program equipment and administrative support, facility expenses, vehicle maintenance, insurance (auto, liability, property, and Worker’s Compensation), utilities, and administrative costs. Our other primary fundraisers are the annual Fall Game Dinner and the Bill Janss Pro-Am.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Over the past 45 years the SVSEF has developed a simple mission: to build strong minds, strong bodies and strong futures through winter sports. The mission does not mention athletes achieving and posting results. When the mission is successfully executed results always come. Building Strong Minds. The SVSEF recognizes that financial success via athletic careers is a long shot and education is the single most important component for a fulfilling and rewarding life. To that end, the SVSEF requires minimum grades to participate and has a dedicated academic staff monitoring and supporting each athlete’s education. For 2010-2011, the cumulative grade point (GPA) of our high school athletes was 3.4. A whopping 53% had a GPA above 3.5. Building Strong Bodies. To be successful in sports you need to be strong and physically fit for the demands of competing. Being prepared for competition requires hours of dedication and focus. Our older athletes train year-round preparing for their sport, some up to 600 hours annually. Training includes not only on-snow activities, but also grueling gym sessions, trampoline workouts, trail running, biking, roller skiing and more. SVSEF athletes participate in every sport imaginable and are generally at the top of the results. Strong Futures. Our student/athletes are encouraged to continue their education after graduating from our program and, we are proud to note that they attend the finest colleges and universities in the nation. SVSEF athletes find that their college applications are more competitive because of their commitment to their sport. Colleges want students who have dedicated themselves to something challenging, who show leadership, perseverance and passion. This is the SVSEF athlete. The SVSEF is more than a snow sports club. We are in the business of helping kids become successful and productive citizens, and we do that one athlete at a time. Inspiring skier, runner Adicoff honored by USSA by JEFF CORDES Jake Adicoff of Ketchum couldn’t quite grasp the meaning when he was presented the prestigious Dave Quinn Award at the conclusion of the 2011 USSA Cross Country Junior National Championships at Minneapolis, Minn. in March.
because of his disability, but rather because of his attitude.... What we have learned on the Intermountain and Sun Valley ski teams is that it is never a matter of whether Jake can do something—it is simply a matter of how and when.”
Adicoff, 16, a Wood River High School sophomore, has been skiing with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Junior Nordic ski team since the second grade. Never before had he received such attention in front of hundreds of onlookers. He needed to learn more about its significance. “I didn’t understand what the award was for, or who it was named for,” said Adicoff last week. “When I did, it was pretty overwhelming.”
SVSEF Development Director Alex Sundali said, “Jake is legally blind. He skis anyway and skis as a fully able-bodied skier. If you didn’t know Jake, you wouldn’t know he cannot see. He has overcome so much and has been an inspiration for skiers on our team and for others around the country.”
I can’t say I’ve ever seen a kid accomplish what he’s accomplished and do it so gracefully. He’s a committed and dedicated athlete. ~ Rick Kapala, cross country head coach The award has been presented 27 times since 1985 to the outstanding cross-country skier at the Junior Olympics by the USSA Cross Country Sport Committee. It is presented in memory of U.S. Ski Team racer Quinn, who died in 1976 at the peak of his athletic career. Recipients are honored for contributions that exemplify the ideals of cross-country skiing—love of the sport, leadership, overcoming hardship and strong work ethic. There were about 380 skiers ages 14-19 at this year’s Junior Nationals. Only one, Jake Adicoff, was named.

He was born with low vision, the result of chicken pox his mother suffered during pregnancy. Jake has no vision in his right eye and his left eye has similar symptoms as macular degeneration—although his sight has improved as he has aged. One of the reasons Adicoff was so blown away by the Dave Quinn Award was because he’s unaccustomed to being the center of attention. In fact, he strives to stay out of the limelight so he can focus on his training and performance. Kapala said, “We found out pretty early that Jake would function well in a group, but he doesn’t want to draw attention to himself. Much of the time when I’m around him, I forget we’re dealing with a kid who has profound visual limitations. You wouldn’t realize it. “Maybe it’s because he’s such a ‘Glue Guy,’ someone who pulls the group together around him. Jake is always in the middle of something. He has the respect of the team not just because of the challenges he faces, but because of all his other personal qualities.” Reprinted with permission from The Idaho Mountain Express.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTof the board During my tenure as president of the SVSEF Board of Directors I have much to be thankful for. I have been surrounded by great kids, quality coaches, strong support staff and dedicated board members. As a community, we should be thankful to the SVSEF as well. The Foundation has gathered, nurtured and coached many of the best athletes in years. Some of them have made the US Ski and Snowboard teams. Many have competed in the Winter Olympics. Hundreds have gone on to further their educations at excellent colleges and universities around the country. All have distinguished themselves as individuals with great character and integrity. I am proud to be a part of their accomplishments. Thank you to all who believe in the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Your ongoing commitment and generosity are the main reasons for our success. You are greatly appreciated. Serving on the Board of this Foundation has been one of the most pleasurable and rewarding experiences of my life. We enthusiastically and gratefully respond, “Mr. Rufus Brown.” Chelle Gourlay (Board Member) A mother of three SVSEF athletes, Chelle’s vision extended far beyond her own children. A tireless advocate for our athletes in every discipline, Chelle’s common sense, humor and consideration of community made her a treasured member of our board. Her consistency coupled with a strong work ethic made her our go-to gal. Kipp Nelson (Board Member) A former national champion at CU, Kipp’s verve and competitive spirit ignited new energy at SVSEF. He raised the bar for standards of excellence in every aspect of programming and coaching; paving the way to reestablishing the SVSEF as one of the best junior development programs in the nation.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM As a SVSEF alumnus, I can understand the difficulty of juggling both skiing and academic commitments. There is no way to avoid the conflicting schedules of winter ski racing with a typical academic calendar. The Academic Program within the SVSEF was created to help the athletes and their families understand and manage the extreme time demands made on competitive winter athletes. As the Academic Director of the SVSEF, I work with the administration at both the public and private schools in the valley to create skier specific academic programs. In addition, I communicate regularly with teachers while monitoring and supporting the athletes who need additional academic help. Competition on skis or snowboard is full of challenges. As athletes push to break through both mental and physical barriers, their results can vary throughout a winter season. However, academically the SVSEF athletes put in the necessary work to post some impressive numbers for the 2010/11 ski season. Similar to last winter, the average cumulative GPA for the entire team (grades 9 – 12) was a 3.4. We will continue to offer academic tutoring and SUPPORT at our Academic Center located at the base of Warm Springs. Whether students are struggling to stay afloat during the busy traveling season, or simply want help moving from a “B” to an “A,” we are here to help. Use us. ALPINE PROGRAM
FIS TEAM - Our FIS Team athletes compete at the highest levels of national competition. Their focus is fine-tuning skills,
knowledge, attitude, and behavior necessary to compete at these advanced levels. These athletes train and compete year-round to reach the Alpine World Junior Ski Championships, other international competitions, or a spot on the U.S. Ski Team. Team activities include on-snow summer camps, international training and competition trips, Intermountain, Western Region, National, and FIS racing opportunities, and supervised year-round strength and conditioning training. Athlete to coach ratio: 5:1 *
J1-2 INTERMOUNTAIN TEAM
- Athletes on this team focus on heightening dedication and quality of work with regard to ski racing. Team members compete regionally and nationally at this level. Athletes must be 15 years of age and able to commit to a year-round training routine. Activities include on-snow summer camp opportunities, supervised yearround strength and conditioning training, Intermountain, Western Region and National racing opportunities. Athlete to coach ratio: 6:1 *
J3 INTERMOUNTAIN TEAM
- The J3 IMD Team is designed to provide a year-round intensive atmosphere for 13- and 14-year-olds committed to alpine ski racing. Athletes will be exposed to and coached on the finer aspects of technique and tactics while competing at a divisional and regional level. Activities include on snow summer camp opportunities, supervised year-round strength and conditioning training, and Intermountain and Western Region racing opportunities. Athlete to coach ratio 6:1 *

- On-snow training runs six days a week in the winter. Tuition includes academic tutoring, membership to High Altitude Fitness, and a locker at the Engl Training Center.
C-TRAVEL TEAM
- This team is for younger skiers who want to race. Athletes are introduced to gate training and learn about committing time and energy to improving techniques and skills. Members may travel to participate in the Intermountain Division’s North Series races and end-of-the-year Championships should they qualify. Fall dryland training runs three days a week. Winter on-snow training runs five days a week and most school holidays. Tuition includes academic mentoring and equipment storage at the Engl Training Center. Athlete to coach ratio: 6:1
C-HOME TEAM
- This is our transitional team between the C-Travel Team and D-Team. Emphasis is on improving technique and continued enjoyment of the sport. Members may participate in our local Mini World Cup, a season-long series of races with cumulative points. Those wishing to compete may participate in select “local” North Series races. Fall dryland activities and on-snow training run three days a week and most school holidays. Tuition includes equipment storage at the Engl Training Center. Athlete to coach ratio: 8:1
D-TEAM - Where the love of the sport begins! The focus at this level is on fun and skill improvement. Members must be
at least in the 2nd grade and able to ski Baldy with ease. Fall dryland activities include hiking, ice-skating, and sledding. On-snow sessions are held on weekends, most school holidays, and during the Blaine County School Ski Program. Team members may alternate with the Cross-Country, Freestyle, and Snowboard Teams. Our results in events this season were stellar, but the work that went on here at home is really what made this a great year. Results at contest are only as good as the effort put in prior to competing. Many riders achieved personal bests and eye opening experiences during the course of this year. As a coach I can only hope that these experiences are the ones that create a life long love for snowboarding and all the amazing experiences that come along with it! ~ Andy Gilbert, Head Shred

Riders new to the Comp Team (kids who would have been C-Travel in the past) can expect to participate in local events and two regional away weekends during the season. As riders progress through the Comp Team events like USASA Nationals, USAA Revolution Tours and Grand Prix events will become available as they qualify. Training opportunities are year-round. PREP TEAM
- The Prep Team is primarily for riders in grades 5-8. As the name implies, Prep Team is preparation to become the best snowboarder you can be. Riders will take the skills learned on the Devo Team and apply them toward specific goals and challenges. Riders will continue to use freeriding as the basis to become a wellrounded rider while beginning to focus on the different disciplines within the sport. Dryland training starts in October. Riders will work within a group setting Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from December through March. Riders will also be encouraged to participate in our local USASA slopestyle and halfpipe events and one regional event to be determined by the coaching staff. - This is a year-round program that develops skiers’ racing skills and physical fitness. Participants receive year-round coaching with regular training beginning in May and frequent summer training camps. Team members have many opportunities to travel to competitions throughout the West and compete at national events. On-snow training sessions are held five to six days per week and start as soon as the snow falls. Tuition includes locker, gym, and waxing facilities at the Lake Creek Hut and tutoring at the Academic Center. Athlete to coach ratio: 8:1

- This program is designed to introduce younger skiers in the J3-J4 classes (age 10-13) to racing and training. Typical activities include track skiing, telemark skiing, backcountry skiing, and overnight yurt trips. There are also opportunities to travel to some competitions. The SVSEF Nordic team blended a mix of new and seasoned talent to post an exceptional winter. While much of the focus often centers on the competition results, it was our efforts with the Development and Prep teams that really stood out this season. Led by Dave Bingham and Kelley Sinnott, our coaches of the youth teams directed a big bundle of energy and enthusiasm. We had the largest team ever at the Quigley Devo Team and in total, the Devo teams were our largest group. It’s exciting to see what the future will bring with this group. Our Junior Team was led this season by Annie Pokorny, Sloan Storey, Maggie Willams, Scott Phelan and Max Christman – all Junior National Medalists.
The nordic team has given both our sons a love of the outdoors, a drive to seek out their personal best and a circle of friends and memories that will last a lifetime. I know Andrew’s experience on the team has contributed greatly to his other successes physically, socially, and academically and will carry him far in life. It is bittersweet to see Andrew moving on but I know I can enjoy Stephen’s remaining years on the team and all that he will gain from being part of such an outstanding program. Thanks! ~ Maura

- This team is for athletes who are committed to achieving their personal best by pursuing Freestyle skiing with focus and determination. We work to develop the skills and the strength necessary to be competitive in all events. The daily training includes freeskiing and training in the mogul course or in the Freeride venues (halfpipe, terrain park). Comp team’s season begins in June with summer ski camps, dryland workouts, and water ramp camps. Onsnow training begins in December and runs six days per week. - The Prep Team is a stepping-stone from the Devo Team to the Comp Team. 2010-2011 was bigger and better than ever for the SVSEF Freestyle ski team; our team enrollment grew to over 75 athletes, an increase of over 30% in one year! Tanner Farrow is not likely to ever forget his 18th birthday on May 21, 2011. The day before he blew out the candles on his celebratory cake his wish had already come true: he was a bona fide member of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team. Farrow is the latest Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine racer nominated to the national team, joining a long and illustrious list, including Olympians Christin Cooper, Picabo Street, Reggie Crist, Susie Patterson, Pete Patterson, Abbi Fisher-Gould and Megan Gerety. Nominations for a few of the teams were publicized this May, with squads to be officially announced on November 5, according to Tom Kelly, vice-president of media relations for the U.S.S.T. With Farrow’s nomination to the U.S. Development team, the SVSEF organization now has at least one alumni or current member representing the United States in every discipline with Morgan Arritola and Simi Hamilton on the cross country team, Kaitlyn Farrington and Graham Watanabe on the snowboard team, and Shane Cordeau on the freestyle squad. Farrow is the most recent alpine designate from Sun Valley since Clic Bloomfield made the U.S. squad in 1996. Farrow, a senior at Wood River High School, is the son of Jill Farrow of Hailey and Jeff Farrow of Bellevue. He has been a member of the SVSEF since 2001, when he started in the Devo Program with head coach Doran Key. He is currently a member of the SVSEF Olympic Development Team, which is designed to promote talented young skiers to national and international success. ODT MISSION - To provide select elite athletes from the SVSEF with the necessary support, both financial and through program offerings, to compete and succeed on the international level and to become members of the US Ski and Snowboard Teams (USST). ODT VISION - The SVSEF ODT vision is to place six athletes on the US Olympic Team at Sochi, Russia in 2014 by being the premier elite ski and snowboard development club in the nation. “Six at Sochi” is a lofty goal, yet a realistic one given the current ODT athlete pipeline. 34th Annual Fall Game Dinner Our oldest fundraiser continues the tradition of starting the season with a community sit-down feast combined with silent and live auctions. Over the years, this event has turned into a sold-out, 350+ guest fundraiser. Held at the Sun Valley Inn Limelight Room, this is the kick-off event of the SVSEF winter season. Van Advertising We sell advertising space on our fleet of vans to local businesses to offset the van maintenance costs. Our vans travel throughout the West and provide a great opportunity for local business owners to support the SVSEF and receive unique advertising exposure. Baldy Hill Climb The 2010 Baldy Hill Climb was the 32nd annual race, organized by our
Cross-Country Program. The BHC signals the beginning of the winter season for locals and is a measure of participants’ fitness. The BHC attracts over 180 hikers and racers of all ages who climb to the top of Baldy from the Warm Springs side. The “Kinder Climb,” a short version of the BHC (starting at Warm Springs and finishing at the bottom of Squirrel Lift) is fun for the younger kids. In 2008, the BHC “Double” was introduced, a combination race of mountain biking and the traditional Baldy Hill Climb. Participants in the “Double” race to the top of Baldy on mountain bikes; ride the Challenger chair down; then climb Baldy in the racer division.
Lane Parrish Memorial Race Named for local extreme skiing legend Lane Parrish, the race combines Alpine and Freestyle competition (mogul skiing and Giant Slalom) to determine Baldy’s best all-around skier. Earn your bragging rights!
