8 p.m. Thursday, April 18 2 and 8 p.m. Friday, April 19 Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall Choreography by Sir Frederick Ashton Live music by the Sarasota Orchestra Celebrating the triumph of young love over the plotting of others, The Sarasota Ballet presents La Fille mal Gardée (The Wayward Daughter) on stage at the Van Wezel April 18th and 19th. A romantic comedy, this heartwarming story ballet will make young and old laugh out loud. Set to live music performed by the Sarasota Orchestra, John Lanchbery’s arrangement of Ferdinand Hérold’s score is lively and bright and brilliantly translates the story’s emotion, trials and tribulations. With a clear narrative and engaging characters, this ballet follows the story of a young girl, Lise, who is in love with a young man named Colas. Unfortunately Lise’s mother, Widow Simone, has other plans and intends for her daughter to marry the son of a wealthy vineyard owner. Opening to a pastoral panoramic set, this ballet happily embraces classical ballet along with elements of folk dance, pantomime and romantic ballet. Originally choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton, Ashton’s gifts for comedy and realizing character through dance and mime are highlighted in this light-hearted love story, which is perfect for the entire family. Tickets start at $35. Box office: (941) 359-0099, Ext. 101
