In June, the Manatee County School Board voted to end its policy of dismissing school early on Wednesdays. Elementary-, middle- and high-school students now will start and end their days at the same time each weekday, with school hours from 7:45 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. for high-school students; 8:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. for elementary-school students; and 9:20 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. for middle-school students, Monday through Friday.

The Retiree For the last four years at Tara Elementary School, Dr. Linda Fouse has been the queen of costumes. The longtime educator, who served as Tara’s principal for the last four years, loves to dress up on special occasions — the first day of school, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day, among others. “I find it gives a connection with the kids,” Fouse said, noting she’s been a safari guide, a leprechaun, Little Bo Peep and other characters. “It relaxes them. It seems to create a calm, fun atmosphere.” When students arrive on campus this school year, Fouse will greet them dressed for the school’s 2012-2013 medieval theme. But, this time, she’ll be a bystander, of sorts. Tara’s new principal,

Steve Royce, assumed administrative duties at Tara earlier this summer. Fouse, will work from Tara until her last day, Sept. 30, when she retires. Until then, she will be working with low-performing schools throughout the Manatee County Public School District, helping them navigate state regulations and data and assisting in other ways. “Mr. Royce has been very kind (to let me work from here),” she said. “It gives me a home base. It’s pretty central, so I can get (to other schools in the district easily). I want to be here (at Tara) for the first day of the year, too. (Being stationed here) gives me an opportunity to say my final goodbyes to the kids.” Fouse’s career in education happened almost by accident. She had been

studying to go into social work when she had a chance to teach summer school. “I fell in love with it,” she said of teaching. “I knew it was my calling.” She started teaching in Manatee County, working in the classroom for 17 years, before shifting into administration at the encouragement of others. “It was really hard to leave the classroom,” she said. “My most rewarding (years were) teaching fourth-/fifthgrade dropout prevention. They had normal IQs, but couldn’t make it in the classroom. It was so rewarding. They made such progress.” Eighteen years after the role switch — after serving as an administrator at Prine, Kinnan and Tara elementary schools — Fouse is ready to retire. “I didn’t think I was going to be ready, but I’m starting to get excited now,” Fouse said. “It’s going to be hard. It’s the children I’m going to miss. It’s the hugs I’ll miss.”

Here, she placed a lot of emphasis on environmentalism, urging her students to recycle and be conscious of other ecofriendly causes. “I always told them that even one person can make a difference,” she said. “One student asked me, ‘What difference have you made?’” This innocent question inspired Cornwell to take a closer look at what she’d been doing to make a difference. Noticing that Palmetto had no recycle/reuse program, she decided to run for City Commission. Upon her election, she was instrumental in implementing the city’s first recycling program. “I was happy to be able to make a difference,” she said. “I

Luckily, the citizens and the other commissioners were behind me on that.” Today, Cornwell has the unique opportunity to wear two hats: one as the assistant principal at Nolan Middle School and one as a city commissioner of 17 years. She

says her knowledge of what’s happening in the education world helps the schools and the community to work hand in hand to best serve Palmetto. “You really can make a difference to the students and to the community if you’re willing to put in the time,” she said.

Assistant Principal at Nolan Middle School and Palmetto City Commissioner Tamara Cornwell has always thought of herself as a service-driven woman. “My father taught us service over self,” said Cornwell. “He always taught us to leave a place better than it was when you arrived.” It’s a principle she’s applied throughout her entire life. After earning degrees in radio and television communication, science education and curriculum instruction, the Manatee-raised graduate soon found a way to apply her passion for service. After having a child, Cornwell left her first job in the communications field for something with a more flexible schedule: substitute teaching. “My other job required me to be available at the drop of a hat,” she said. “I thought I’d try substitute teaching, and I fell in

The Kindergartner For Savannah Marquez, the playground is a land of makebelieve and dreams. It’s a place where she and her friends pretend they’re mermaids swimming around the ocean. Beneath the water they can breathe, talk and even outswim sharks. “The best part about being a mermaid is changing colors,” says 4-year-old Savannah, whose brunette tendrils are being swept up into two perfect braids on this Wednesday afternoon. “There’s a rainbow of colors all the way to the end of your fin.” This fall, Savannah will be attending kindergarten along with her best friend, Ali, from Primrose School in Lakewood Ranch. “She likes dinosaurs and dragons and lizards,” Savannah says. “I like dolphins and mermaids and lions. Ali pretends she’s a lizard and changes into dinosaurs and dragons. What if a rainbow dragon was real and

I touched it?” Savannah loved preschool from the first moment she walked in the door. “I think that it was great and I love the food that they have and nap time,” she says. “My favorite food is meatloaf. Sometimes we have carrots and beans, and I don’t like those.” She’s a little nervous about starting kindergarten, but there are a number of things she expects to learn. Some involve building rocket ships; others involve planets. “I think I’ll like kindergarten,” Savannah says. “We’re gonna do different things we haven’t did. We will have to build a rocket ship arch with paper and cut it out and put some things on it so it’s like a rocket. We will learn about stars and the sun and make space planets. It will be too hard to make Saturn because it has rings.” Her favorite planet is Earth because it’s green and blue

She’s a “regular” dog — not too big and really furry. “She likes persons and is so excited to see everybody in my house,” Savannah says. “She’s

9, and she has white and light brown and dark brown hair. She has color everywhere. I’m bigger than her.” She may only be going into kindergarten, but Savannah has already chosen her future career. “I want to be a teacher with a red shirt,” she says.

Even at the age of 4, it was apparent that Maddie Whittemore was a giver. She was only in preschool when she decided that her long hair would be in better hands as a donation to Locks of Love, a nonprofit that donates hairpieces to young cancer patients. “It was the only way we could get her to cut her hair,” said her mother, Marla. Since then, Maddie has racked up more than 500 hours of volunteering for various organizations and has donated more than 60 inches of her hair — all at the age of 12. Maddie has spent the last four years regularly volunteering at the Pinnacle Academy — a private school for children with autism. “My brother, Max, has gone here for six years,” she said. “I thought, ‘I love Max so much, why don’t I give it a try?’ It’s

really fun here.” The academy teaches children ages 2 through 18, but Maddie spends most of her time working with the younger kids. She spends time learning each child’s unique personality traits and needs, and she helps them develop their language and communication skills. She says she enjoys the detective-like nature of learning how best to help each child. “I like getting to know the kids better,” said Maddie. “I get to teach them how to do something, and we’re friends forever. Some of the kids can’t even talk, but we’re still friends.” One technique used at the academy is called an integrated play group, which involves one therapist, one special-needs child and one volunteer child, who all play together until the therapist is no longer needed to supervise

This helps the special-needs children learn appropriate ways to interact with others, and Maddie says she is able to apply a lot of what she learns at home. “I can use a lot of the skills I learn here with Max,” she said. “I think it makes me closer to him.”

Although Maddie says she isn’t sure what drives her to volunteer, she hopes other kids will follow suit. “I think some people might be scared or nervous, but they shouldn’t be,” she said. “I don’t think anyone would regret doing this; it’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.”

It’s a message to boys’ moms to explain our differences.” According to this 11-yearold, boys like to have fun first, and work later. They’re sloppier and more laid-back. They’re picky about what they eat, except for dessert. They hate veggies, unless it’s bok choy. They love science and anything related to technology. It’s well past 10 a.m. and Alex Kumar has just awakened. He stumbles down the hall in a T-shirt and shorts, rubbing his eyes and probably already day-dreaming about the robot he wants to invent one day that will remind him to do various tasks such as going to bed earlier. If Alex had such a robot, it could tell him when to stop reading at night. It could tell him to do his homework and clean his room. It could also wake him up in the morning. a good opportunity to meet friends, and he enjoyed the competitions and opportunity to travel. “We would work on a topic for an entire year,” he said. “They would give you a topic that you had to research, and then you would take it to the competitions. We got to travel all around the U.S.” In his senior year, Kargauer’s adviser chose him as president of the club, which recently returned as one of the most successful teams at the 34th annual National Technology Student Association conference in Nashville, Tenn. The competition covered a range of events, including construction renovation, photography, prepared presentation, prototype manufacturing, transportation modeling and Kargauer’s favorite: website design.

Jacob Kargauer, president of the Braden River High School Technology Student Association (TSA), didn’t always know he had a knack for technology. The recent high school graduate’s first foray into the field came in a middle school tech class, in which the students were required to build websites as part of the curriculum. But Kargauer found that what began as a school assignment would become a hobby he’d carry with him throughout his high school years. “We had to do website design for class,” said Kargauer. “But, I found that I actually enjoyed it.” From there, Kargauer continued designing websites, and when he got to high school, he joined the TSA, in which he participated throughout all four years. Kargauer says the club was

Braden River High placed in the top 10 in 15 out of the 33 events, which served as a fitting way for Kargauer to wrap up his time with the club. “That’s probably my favorite memory,” he said. “I’m going to miss competing and meeting new people. We put a lot of time and effort into it.” As he prepares to start college at Florida State

University this fall, where he will double major in mathematics and education, Kargauer still plans to use his experience with computers and website design on the side. He hopes to become a high school math teacher. “I’m excited for a new experience,” he said. “I’ll get to meet new people and try new things and get to know a new city.”

Olivia Ortiz is currently recovering from a broken femur in her right leg but hopes to compete in track season next spring.

“He’s been by my side and sets goals for me every week,” Ortiz says. “He’s definitely someone who inspires me to do my best. I also have a great support system with my family, who helps me to stay positive and be in the right mindset.” Until she’s cleared for running, Ortiz is using the stationary bike and has started swimming to keep in shape. Her main goal is to build back her quad muscles. “I know I’ll be OK,” Ortiz says. “Running does not define me, it’s just my great passion. It’s definitely something you grow attached to. Right now, I’m learning so much about myself and to not to take things for granted. The journey is just fun, and I’ll be able to run again. I’m on the road to recovery.”

Fifty meters from the finish line during the 3,200-meter run at states, Olivia Ortiz heard a pop and fell to the ground. She was taken away in an ambulance and treated for a broken femur in her right leg, which required three surgeries. As soon as she woke up, Ortiz asked her doctor if she’d be able to run again. The hopes are high and the bone is healing well, but she’s taking it slow and says patience is key. The race was the last one of her junior year — and it was supposed to be her strongest. “Your junior year is when colleges look at you,” Ortiz says. “You’re definitely on their radar if you stand out. I wanted to break all my personal bests. “I have two small screws by my knee and two by my hip. I had a great recovery, but obviously with my senior year coming up, this is not the summer I planned on.” Ortiz has already garnered 10 awards this year. She’s been named the Sarasota HeraldTribune Track Athlete of the Year and Bradenton Herald’s All-Area Athlete of the Year for track and field. Lakewood Ranch High School has named her its Scholar Athlete for a 4.0-plus GPA, Most Valuable Track Athlete and Track and Field Team Leadership Award recipient. She was regional, district and county champion in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A 1,600 meters and regional/district champion in the class 3A 3,200 meters. This, of course, doesn’t count ESPN naming her its high school Florida cross country Gatorade Runner of the Year in 2011. She also has the best 5K time for the 2011-2012 school year. But, she’s in no rush to get back. Right now, she’s following her physical therapy exercises precisely. Coach Chuck Reda, her former soccer coach, is also her physical therapist.
