Nov. 16 through Dec. 22 Music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards Book by Peter Stone Directed by Frank Galati As it turns out, giving birth to the United States wasn’t exactly easy … but Jefferson, Franklin, Adams and the other founding fathers were determined to forge this country into being. This high-spirited musical movingly and hilariously captures one of the greatest moments in American history, the signing of the Declaration of Independence. 1776 celebrates these proud, uncertain, charming, irritable, yet, ultimately, noble figures who created our fledgling nation, against all the odds. The production is directed by two-time Tony Award winner, Frank Galati. 1776 Family Day will take place Saturday, Dec. 1, with special workshops at 1 p.m. and a post-show discussion with members of the cast. Special family discount pricing available. For details, call 941-351-9010, Ext. 3306.

Dec. 5 through Dec. 30, Gompertz Theatre Written by Mark St. Germain Directed by Richard Hopkins The production is inspired by a true story. In 1971, a high-ranking member of the Ku Klux Klan is pitted against an African-American civil rights activist about the desegregation of schools. This drama exposes the poison of prejudice and explores how two polarized individuals can overcome their differences. “Powerful … explosive.” — Times Union

Paolo Veronese: A Master and His Workshop in Renaissance Venice On display from Dec. 7 through April 14 Paolo Veronese (1528–1588) was one of the giants of Venetian Renaissance painting. Though perhaps best known for his grand ceiling paintings and large Biblical feast scenes, Veronese and his workshop created altarpieces and smaller religious paintings for private devotion or collectors, as well as portraits, depictions of sensual narratives drawn from the classical tradition and allegories glorifying the Venetian state. Veronese was also an outstanding draftsman.

Reimagining recognizable characters from the 120-year-old ballet as celebrated circus figures from Sarasota’s past, John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker intertwines history, dance and imagination. Inspired by the rich heritage that Sarasota shares with the Ringling Bros. Circus, the Sarasota Ballet has created a circus-themed production of the classic holiday favorite The Nutcracker. Following Hoffmann’s memorable storyline and using the traditional Tchaikovsky score performed live by the Sarasota Orchestra, the John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker makes its world premiere this December on the stage of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Imagined and brought to life by international choreographer Matthew Hart, with set and costume designs by award-winning designer Peter Docherty, the new ballet pays homage to the 1920s and 1930s, when the Ringling Circus was at its height. Tickets: $35 to $90

5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, Holley Hall Conductor: Dirk Meyer Be transported to another time with three composers who found inspiration in the organized structure, poise and crisp beauty of the Classical Era. Ravel’s gorgeous chamber concerto for harp (with accompaniment from flute, clarinet and strings) is a resplendent work that situates his Impressionist voice within an ambience of classical grace. Schubert’s brilliant Symphony No. 5 sings with a distinctly Mozartean voice and exhibits a true penchant for melody and concise construction. Tickets start at $27.

His Three Places in New England paints a picture of American ideals, lifestyle and patriotism at the turn of the century.
