SARASOTA OPERa
Ashton, Tudor & Walsh
The Pearl Fishers by Georges Bizet
March 1 through March 3 FSU Center for the Performing Arts Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Rendezvous, Antony Tudor’s Lilac Garden and Dominic Walsh’s I Napoletani Reaching into the arsenal of successful ballets performed in the past, The Sarasota Ballet Director, Iain Webb, is reprising three unique and beautiful pieces for the company’s fifth performance and offering audiences three different styles of ballet. With stunning designs by William Chappel and set to the ballet interlude from Daniel Auber’s opera, L’Enfant Prodigue, Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Rendezvous is a light-hearted suite of dances in which young people meet, flirt and part by the gates of a sunny park. Antony Tudor’s Lilac Garden is at the same time fragrantly elegant and psychologically powerful. Set in a lilac-scented party on the eve of her marriage of convenience, the piece contains a series of turbulent emotional undercurrents expressed with economy and skill, in touched hands, lifts and lines, as its quartet of crossed lovers weave their passions and frustrations through the formal patterns of a social occasion. Dominic Walsh’s smash hit I Napoletani was inspired by the vitality of Naples, Italy. This ballet is set to Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Neapolitan popular music from the late 1800s.
