With its 2012-13 season, Asolo Rep launches The American Character Project, an ambitious five-year initiative that presents theatrical works that explore and celebrate the extraordinary people, culture, history and experiences that make our country unique. The season opens in November in grand style with the hit musical, “1776,” directed by Tony Awardwinner Frank Galati. On Saturday, Dec. 1, Asolo Rep presents “1776” Family Day with special workshops beginning at 11 a.m. and a post-show discussion with members of the cast. Special family discount pricing available.

MAINSTAGE SEASON ‘Smokey Joe’s Café’ Music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller Keating Theatre A celebration of the music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, this musical revue brings together all the hits that helped change the face of the American music scene. ‘1776’ Music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards Book by Peter Stone Directed by Frank Galati Nov. 1 through Dec. 22 As it turns out, giving birth to the U.S. wasn’t exactly easy, but Ben Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and other revolutionaries were determined to forge this country into being. This high-spirited musical movingly, and often hilariously, captures the great galvanizing moment in the American story: the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “1776” celebrates these proud, uncertain, charming, irritable, yet, ultimately, noble figures that created our fledgling nation, against all odds.

CABARET SEASON ‘Let’s Twist Again: with the Wanderers’ Developed by Richard Hopkins and Jim Prosser, with additional assistance from Rebecca Hopkins Goldstein Cabaret The 1950s: bobby socks, hula hoops and street corner quartets. From an innocent era came stunning harmonies by young guys in matching jackets. These crooners started on the street and serenaded a generation through the ’50s and ’60s on boardwalks and rooftops. JAMES TURRELL SKYSPACE: ‘Joseph’s Coat’ Open Thursday through Sunday evenings Nov. 8 through March 10, 2013 “Joseph’s Coat” is a Skyspace created by internationally renowned artist, James Turrell. The permanent installation is a “gathering place” for contemplation, sustained experience and conversation. As you gaze up at the sky through the 24-foot square aperture in the ceiling, you are invited to contemplate light, perception and experience. At sunrise and sunset, a sophisticated system of LED lights is employed to change the color of the space. In doing so, the artist changes the context in which you view the sky and can radically change your perception of the color of the sky and its spatial relation to you. No matter when you enjoy the Skyspace (sunrise, sunset, during the day, rain or shine) you will have a unique experience. SARASOTA BALLET ASHTON, WHEELDON & TAYLOR: Sir Frederick Ashton’s ‘Symphonic Variations’ Christopher Wheeldon’s ‘There Where She Loves’ Paul Taylor’s ‘Company B’ Sarasota Opera House Friday, Nov. 16, 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2 and 8 p.m. Reflecting on the seasons in human relationships, the Sarasota Ballet presents a program featuring Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Symphonic Variations,” Christopher Wheeldon’s “There Where She Loves,” and Paul Taylor’s “Company B.” In the carefully constructed, abstract “Symphonic Variations,” Ashton admitted, “It’s about the morning of the world,” where you find the emotional drama of human lives within changing relationships. The ballet encapsulates the essence of Ashton’s style and remains a masterpiece of neoclassical abstraction. “There Where She Loves,” set to songs by Chopin and Weill and sung in German and French by a mezzo soprano, is aptly described by Martha Ullman West in Dance magazine as an “elaborate exploration of partnering, what men do to women and how (Wheeldon) imagines they feel about it.” This ballet vividly presents vignettes of love and

loss, passion and betrayal, from the female point of view. “Company B” is a seminal piece of Americana, recalling the turbulent era of the Depression at the dawn of the 1940s through the hit songs of the Andrew Sisters. Although the songs depict a nation surging with high spirits, millions of men were bidding farewell to wives or girlfriends, and many would never return from battle. The dance focuses on such poignant dualities. Tickets: $35 to $90

Our gifted Sarasota Wind Quintet will shine in this lively, playful composition that is a frisky interplay between the horn and four woodwind instruments. Bruch’s string octet features four violins, two violas, cello and the unusual addition of the double bass. This is an outstanding example of his beautiful writing for string instruments. This work is a true jewel in its depth, beauty and stately elegance.
