sarasota

is the perfect time for Spaceummer relaxing, enjoying a slower of life and exploring new places. But, sometimes, the best vacations are ones that don’t require extra suitcases, hours of planning and long drives. Our area offers many nearby destinations that are perfect places for day trips. Whether you are looking for the best places to take out-oftown guests or you just want to rediscover the best local places for eating, shopping and enjoying all the area has to offer, use our day trip guides to remember what you love best about the place you call home. We’ve outlined everything you need to know when visiting nearby places such as Anna Maria Island, East County, Sarasota, South Sarasota and The Dali

st. petersburg Museum, in St. Petersburg. Anna Maria Island has retained its Old-Florida feel through the years, and its wide selection of accommodations, restaurants and shops makes it a popular vacation destination — whether you only have a day or longer. The island, which consists of three cities: Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach, boasts three piers, which are perfect for fishing or just watching marine life at its best. East County, located in the eastern and northern areas of Manatee and Sarasota counties, has ample activities for every member of the family. Shopping, dining, golfing and outdoor activities, such as kayaking, canoeing and walking along state park trails should top your agenda for a day trip. After completing a day’s

worth of activities, you can wind down with shopping at many of the area’s specialty shops and dining at unique restaurants known for their views and ambience and much as their food. Sarasota is, of course, known for its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, but the coastal community also features dozens of art galleries, 10 theaters, eclectic restaurants, botanical gardens and shopping boutiques. The city’s charming features are sure to keep you coming back day after day, trip after trip. It’s easy to continue discovering your new favorite places to visit. The best way to describe the

South Sarasota area is that it is a hidden gem. Not only does it have a plethora of eclectic shops with unique finds, but it also features amazing sunsets courtesy of waterfront dining, a 30-acre Historic Spanish Point and a state park that boasts 15 miles of nature trails. Even if you have already visited the Dali Museum before, now is the time to make a repeat trip. In January, the museum, which houses the largest collection of Dali’s works outside of Spain, opened in a $36 million geodesic building eight blocks north of its former location. Double the size of the old building, the new home can accommodate such events as “Breakfast with Dali,” “Dillydally with Dali,” “Yoga with Dali” and much more.

its palm trees and sparkling blue water. The film was supposedly set in Hawaii. But, perhaps it’s best that Anna Maria never found Hollywood fame. Visitors and locals alike refer to Anna Maria Island as “paradise without an attitude.” It’s a seven-mile island that never lost its quaint charm and laid-back style. Home to a year-round population of approximately 8,500,

the island consists of three small cities: Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach and Anna Maria. Additionally, its wide selection of accommodations, restaurants and shops make it a popular day-trip and vacation destination. Until 1921, the island was accessible only by boat. Today, you can reach the island from one of two bridges that connect the island to mainland Manatee County or the Longboat Pass Bridge, which connects Longboat Key and Bradenton Beach. But boating is still a popular way to explore the island, with public boat docking available. With three piers and a variety of fishingcharter businesses, the island is a fishing enthusiast’s paradise. It’s also a popular place for outdoor dining, because the sunsets are as famous as the seafood. With so much to love about Anna Maria Island, it’s no surprise it’s known as the beach-wedding capital of Florida. But, whether you’re planning a day trip or a trip down the aisle, you’ll surely fall in love with Anna Maria Island.

For something you’ll only find on Anna Maria Island, head to Mr. Bones BBQ (3007 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach), where you can feast on baby back ribs and choose from 60 beers displayed in a coffin. And, if you save room for dessert, consider the Sign of the Mermaid Restaurant (9707 Gulf Drive, Anna Maria), where owner Andrea Spring’s pies have won her two “Best in Show” awards at the National Pie Championships.

Each of Anna Maria Island’s three cities has a distinct blend of retail, bringing a mix of apparel, jewelry, furniture, souvenirs and specialty items. Bradenton Beach is home to Historic Bridge Street, which underwent a rejuvenation project in 2007 that transformed the street from a bar area

into a thriving business community. The street includes stores such as The Sailor’s Knot (110 Bridge St.), an apparel, jewelry and gift store that was listed in Southern Living Magazine as a favorite place to shop, and Bridge Street Jewelers (129 Bridge St.), which carries the original Anna Maria Island destination bracelet. To the north, on Holmes Beach, you’ll find a variety of shops, such as the Sand Dollar Gift Shop (5302 Marina Drive), which features unique jewelry, home décor, gift items and more, and West Coast Surf Shop (3902 Gulf Drive), which is known for its customized selection of surfboards, skimboards and skateboards, along with multiple art galleries. At the northern tip of the island, Anna Maria is home to the recently revitalized Pine Avenue development, which includes shops such as the Anna Maria Island Olive Oil Outpost (401 Pine Ave.), which carries a large selection of cooking oils such as white truffle oil and pumpkin-flavored olive oil, and Emerson’s Humor (403C Pine Ave.), which features humorous paintings, T-shirts and gift items by artist Emerson Quillin, and

Fishing charters and tours via segway or kayak are available through a number of companies. If you’re truly adventurous, you can get a view of the island from above via parasailing or scuba dive off of Bradenton Beach, where the 1940s sunken freighter ship, SS Regina, is located. For a scenic stroll, visit the Bradenton Beach City Pier or the Anna Maria City Pier, both of which are popular for fishing and dining. Other options include miniature golf at the Fish Hole Miniature Golf (115 Bridge St., Bradenton Beach) or the Holmes Beach Skate Park, on Marina Drive. If you’re looking for a history lesson, check out the Anna Maria Historical Society complex on Pine Avenue, which features a museum and the historic Belle Haven Cracker Cottage and surrounding mangrove walk, and the old Anna Maria City Jail, which is a favorite spot for photo-ops. ast County, which refers to the eastern and northern areas of Manatee County and well as northeast Sarasota County, also includes the area of Lakewood Ranch. This area has ample shopping, dining, golfing and great outdoor activities — such as kayaking, canoeing and state park trails for hiking and biking. If you want to catch a good Little League game this summer, East County is the place. East County is a family-friendly community that includes a mix of young families, snowbirds, executives and retirees. The residents in the area are active and love their community.

by a local family from Lakewood Ranch, ScoopDaddy’s ice cream and soda fountain classics (8203 Tourist Center Drive, Bradenton) are the perfect way to cool off during the hot summer months.

There are so many great locallyowned restaurants in East County that you can always try something new with each visit. For fresh fish with a flair, you must pay a visit to the Lucky Pelican Bistro (6239 Lake Osprey Drive, Sarasota), which serves lunch and dinner. For a lighter lunch or dinner, stop by Fast ’N’ Fresh (8105 Cooper Creek Blvd., Sarasota), where the possibilities are plenty. You can choose from predesigned salads, sandwiches or wraps, or you can create your own dish from the extensive selection of fresh ingredients. While in the area, stop into John Dough Bakery & Café (8527 Cooper Creek Blvd., Sarasota), an old-fashioned bakery. The family-owned business offers a wide variety of artisan breads, pastries, soups, sandwiches and salads — almost all of which are made from scratch. A great restaurant to take the whole family is MacAllisters Grill & Tavern (8110 Lakewood Main St., Lakewood Ranch), which features a Scottish golf-themed

restaurant and bar. The menu features casual food with a Scottish twist. Of course, the most popular item is the fish and chips. Other noteworthy restaurants: Enjoy alfresco dining and an outdoor bar at Main Street Trattoria (8131 Lakewood Main St., Lakewood Ranch). Stop by Square 1 Burgers & Bar (5239 University Parkway, Sarasota) for a fun atmosphere and great food. With nine types of burgers — from sashimi tuna to buffalo to Meyer's 100% Angus — three types of buns, 25 toppings, 12 cheeses and 13 sauces, you’re bound to find a favorite. Owned and operated

East County is home to many specialty shops, such as Katie Rose Olive Oil (8111 Lakewood Main St., Suite 105, Lakewood Ranch), a shopping experience for the senses with 36 different olive oils and balsamic vinegars from all over the world, and Wish On Main (8111 Lakewood Main St., Lakewood Ranch). For more than 50 years, Crowder's Gifts & Gadgets has been serving Manatee County, and a few years ago, Lakewood Ranch got its own Crowder’s (2401 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Bradenton). Carrying such lines as Troll beads, Vera Bradley, Spartina and Brighton (to name a few), this gift shop has something for any occasion. In addition to gifts, home décor and

It’s no secret that East County is a

better way to see the natural beauty of the area than from upclose. If you’d like to take a step back into Old Florida, there’s no better place than Linger Lodge (7205 85th St. Court E., Bradenton), where you can kayak, canoe, fish and camp on the Braden River. It also features karaoke on Fridays and live music on Saturday and Sunday nights. For that rainy day, keep your kids entertained at Strike Zone Indoor Sports Complex (5028 Lena Road, Bradenton). You are sure to be a home-run hitter while experiencing its 16,500-square-foot baseball training facility with batting cages for baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball. Another great place to burn some energy and calories after a day of dining is Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex (5309 29th St. E., Ellenton). The ice rink best known for being home to 2010 and 2011 United States National Pairs Silver Medalists Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig. The 115,000-square-foot igloo-like complex offers two NHL size ice rinks, a 13,500-square-foot indoor soccer/ football field, a fitness center and much more.

mecca of family-friends things to do — between sports and farms, there’s always something interesting to keep you busy. The biggest headliner recently is the competitive rowing destination that is Nathan Benderson Park (Exit 213 off I-75). The park will host many upcoming regattas this season. Main Street in Lakewood Ranch is an obvious destination when spending the day in East County. It’s become a one-stop shop for a day or night of dining, shopping and playing. Make sure to bring the little ones into Little Bookworms (8111 Lakewood Main

St., Suite 103, Lakewood Ranch) for story time. Get creative and paint, make your own pottery or take a glass-fusing class at Art A Blaze (8111 Lakewood Main St., Suite 107, Lakewood Ranch) or try for a holein-one while miniature golfing at The Fish Hole (8111 Lakewood Main St., Lakewood Ranch). To really get to know the Lakewood Ranch area better, you could take a bike ride or walk on the trails of Lakewood Ranch at Greenbrook Adventure Park (13400 Adventure Place, Lakewood Ranch). The store offers a state-of-the-art golf simulator and fitting system. The Rustic Rose (11161 S.R. 70 E., Suite 109, Bradenton) opened this spring its newest location in East County — there is also a location in Parrish and North Carolina. It offers a unique variety of home accents, inspirational items and gifts, as well as jewelry and handbags at affordable prices. To shop while also supporting the community, take a peek in the newest consignment store in East County, 2nd Ann Rose (8225 Natures Way, Suite 107, Lakewood Ranch). arasota is best known for its crystal clear waters and white-sand beaches. It’s home to more than 30 art galleries and 10 theaters, eclectic restaurants and shopping boutiques. It’s a charming city sure to capture your attention, no matter if it’s your first visit or if you are rediscovering your favorite place to live, because there’s not much that beats sitting back and relaxing to the sounds of the water, while seagulls soar over your head and sailboats drift by in Sarasota Bay.

Since 1929, the New Pass Grill and Bait Shop (1505 Ken Thompson Parkway) has sold more than 1 million burgers. Three reasons to go: It’s one of the best burger joints in town that will customize your order just the way you like it; it’s on the water; and you can fish till your heart’s content. The bait-andtackle shop offers live and frozen bait, plus fishing tackle and accessories, rental equipment and charter services. For a unique lunch option, try Bob’s Train (2211 Fruitville Road). It’s a circus train that’s open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s a bit tricky to find — it's north of Fruitville Road off Third Street — look for the main car, painted red, white and blue. For gourmet goods, stop by Morton's Gourmet Market (1924 S. Osprey Ave.). On a hot summer day, there's no better place to stop for a frozen concoction than Daiquiri Deck (325 John Ringling Blvd. or 5250 Ocean Blvd.).

A unique local boutique is Posh on Palm (33 S. Palm Ave.). Owners Mark and Susie Holt’s collection of vintage linens and lace started 20 years ago and is used for sofa slipcovers, pillow shams and clothing. outh Sarasota may seem sleepy and quiet, but venturing down there is like going on a treasure hunt. The good stuff is hidden off Tamiami Trail. It's hanging in the storefront windows of the Gulf Gate hub, where you can shop for everything from beads to stilettos and then unwind at any one of the down-to-earth watering holes, such as Monk's Steamer Bar (6690 Superior Ave.), Mr. Beery's (2645 Mall Drive), Irish Rover Pub (6518 Gateway Ave.) or Sarasota Brewing Company (6607 Gateway Ave.). It's tucked away into Spanish Point and Oscar Scherer State Park, where you can observe nature and wildlife in abundance, while walking, kayaking or canoeing. Another good spot for lounging and taking in the spectacular views is the Casey Key Fish House and Tiki Bar (801 Blackburn Point).

In 1569, Fernando D. Phillippi sailed his ship, the “Philly P.,” up the creek that is now the corner of Bee Ridge Road and Beneva Road. He and his cousin, Pepe, built a home there in 1604, but in 1619, Phillippi disappeared during Hurricane Maria. The Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar (5353 S. Tamiami Trail) is the converted winter home of the Phillippi family. A casual seafood restaurant where patrons can relax at a picnic table inside or out with a view of the water, the restaurant’s menu is extensive for lunch or dinner. For a little spice, try the Maryland-style spiced shrimp, and one can never go wrong with the parsley potatoes. If you're in the mood for lobster, stop by Lotsa Lobster (8780 S. Tamiami Trail), a seafood market providing the freshest lobster, fish and more. In September 2009, “Man V. Food” host Adam Richman headed

to Munchie’s 420 Café (6639 Superior Ave.), in Gulf Gate, to endure a mystery challenge. Although the café is known for sandwiches stuffed with everything from macaroni and cheese to mozzarella sticks, Richman’s challenge involved consuming 10 to 12 wings

drenched in a sauce that contained the extract of the ghost chili pepper — formally recognized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world. A romantic waterfront dinner choice is Ophelia’s on the Bay (9105 Midnight Pass Road), a gathering place for visitors and locals since it opened in 1988. The restaurant overlooks mangrove islands that double as a bird sanctuary. Enjoy dining al fresco on the outdoor patio as you feast on lobster-infused blue crab bisque. Other great spots on Siesta Key to try include Sun Garden Café (210 Avenida Madera) and The Village Café (5133 Ocean Blvd.).

Summer adventure camps are just starting, and “A Window to the Past,” an archaeology exhibit where you can step inside a 15-foot-high shell midden, is now on display. Spend a few hours on the water during a Stand-Up Paddleboard Eco-Excursion and discover the mangrove tunnels that connect Little Sarasota Bay to North Creek. Spanish Point is also home to the area’s largest butterfly garden, with trails that wind through native coastal habitats. A few minutes down the road is Blackburn Point Park, a quaint spot for bird- and manatee-watching. Just over the historic one-lane bridge is Casey Key, a wonderland of majestic mansions on the water. A hiker and bicyclist’s dream, Oscar Scherer State Park (1843 S. Tamiami Trail) boasts 15 miles of trails through beautiful nature areas and is one of the best places to see Florida scrub jays. The park has full-facility campsites, a black-water stream that flows to the Gulf of Mexico for canoeists and kayakers and freshwater and saltwater fishing. If you’re in the mood for an afternoon drive, head down to the only beachfront restaurant, tiki bar and fishing pier in Venice — Sharky’s on the Pier (1600 Harbor Drive S.). The Venice landmark sits right on the Gulf of Mexico in the sharks' tooth capital of the world. Sharky’s, which opened in 1987, is known for its sunsets, stunning views and some of the best seafood around. While there, hunt for prehistoric shark teeth and shells on Caspersen Beach.

DAY TRIP | dali 

museu m

ST. PETERSBURG

SUMMER SEASON

By HEIDI KURPIELA

PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE DALI MUSEUM

 Need another reason to visit the Dali Museum? The museum’s entire oil collection is on display for the first time.

O

nce upon a time, the Salvador Dali Museum sat on four waterfront acres near the steps to the University of South Florida, in downtown St. Petersburg. The museum, which opened in an unassuming building in 1982, holds the largest collection of Dali’s work outside of Spain. For years it’s served as a popular attraction for St. Petersburg tourists and budding art students. And for most weekend warriors living in Sarasota, the 40-mile trek up I-75 is a painless jaunt for a well-worth-it daytrip. However, if you were hesitant before to venture an hour north to tour the casa de surrealism, you may

want to reconsider now. In January, after three years of construction, the Dali moved into a $36 million geodesic building located eight blocks north of the original museum. “The building itself is now sort of a cultural destination,” says Peter Tush, the museum’s curator of education. “A lot of people are coming because it’s a beautiful space to visit. With our old building, it would have been a harder pitch. Now it would be foolish to not come up here for the day.” The museum offers a variety of events throughout the summer. Here’s a look at what you’ll get if you make the trip.

Midday by the bay A live-music series in the courtyard between the Dali and the Mahaffey Theater, Midday by the Bay runs from noon to 2 p.m. every Friday afternoon. Attendees can bring their own picnic lunch, purchase snacks or sandwiches from the museum’s café or grab takeout from any one of the restaurants near the museum. The popular concert series has attracted folk singer/songwriters and New Orleans-influenced jazz bands.  Bonus: It’s free! Breakfast with Dali Have your art and eat it, too. Breakfast with Dali includes an earlymorning tour of the museum before it opens to the public. Specifically tailored to children, the tour is interactive and led by a Dali docent. Tours kick off at 9:30 a.m. every Saturday and end in a breakfast buffet that, according to Dali staffers, is so popular reservations should be made several days in advance. Tickets are $21 for adults and $10 for children.

 Handheld audio guides now come free

with admission.

 Bonus: Docents

hone in on Dali paintings that typically appeal to kids.

Dillydally with Dali Wondering what to do with the kids this summer? Dillydally with Dali, a free program consisting of arts-and-crafts workshops, puzzles and games, is held from 11:45 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays in the museum’s education classroom. Activities rotate every few months, so you can hit up the museum in May and again in July and walk away with completely different crafts, such as this favorite: creating Dali’s famously weird moustache.  Bonus: Handheld audio guides now come free with admission. Programmed in both English and Spanish, the guides offer a one-hour adult tour and a 30-minute children’s tour. Yoga plus Dali Nothing says om like a 90-minute yoga session at the Dali Museum. Led by yogi and visual artist John Allen Gibel, the class is held from noon to 1:30 p.m. every Sunday in the museum’s Avant-Garden overlooking the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront. A combination of vinyasa/ ashtanga-based yoga, meditation and relaxation, the sessions cost $15 for non-members and are open to beginning and experienced students.  Bonus: For an additional $6, you can purchase admission to the galleries.

TRAVEL LOG What: Dali Museum Where: 1 Dali Blvd., St. Petersburg Why: The new museum, which opened in January on the downtown St. Petersburg bayfront, is double the size of the old building. Dubbed “The Glass Enigma,” the building has already attracted 135,000 visitors since the grand opening. (The old museum used to average 200,000 visits per year.) When: For family-friendly events, we suggest hitting up the museum Friday through Sunday. For more information, call 727-823-3767 or visit www.thedali.org PHOTO COURTESY OF THE DALI MUSEUM

on a chalkboard, a white board or a piece of bedrock. A lesson on Dali could never be dull. Join members of the museum’s curatorial and education team at 10:15 a.m. the first Wednesday of every month for a free theme-orientated presentation in the Raymond James Community Room.  Bonus: Coffee and refreshments are served for free. Dali and Beyond Film Series Chances are you’ve never heard of the Disney flick, “Destino,” which was created by Dali and Disney studio artist John Hench in 1945. The plug was pulled on the film due to financial concerns shortly after Hench and Dali finished the storyboards. In 1999, however, Roy E. Disney resurrected the project. The resulting six-minute short about ill-fated lovers who waltz through surreal scenery was nominated for a 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. You can watch the film for free, plus the 82-minute documentary, “Disney & Dali: A Date with Destino”

about Dali and Disney’s little-known relationship and the completion of this long-forgotten project, at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 2, in the museum theater.  Bonus: The

film series returns two weeks later with Alex de la Iglesia’s “El Dia de la Bestia” (6 p.m. June 16), an apocalyptic fantasy about a priest who discovers the exact birth date of the Antichrist.

Our Town: Conversations with St. Pete Mythmakers Tired of seeing and hearing about the same old Sarasota dignitaries? Then travel to St. Petersburg to meet the movers and shakers grabbing headlines north of the Sunshine Skyway. Hosted by philosopher and artist Dr. Carol Mickett, this free once-amonth conversation with a notable St. Petersburg leader will hopefully inspire you and give you fodder for the city of Sarasota’s suggestion box. The next tête-à-tête is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in the museum theater. The featured guest is to-be-determined.  Bonus: Arrive early to nosh on tapas and copas in the museum café.
