MIXIN’ IT UP: Bill Mixon is supposed to be retired. “Whenever a tractor goes missing, we know that he’s got it and is out there doing something, whether pulling up trees, planting or spraying,” says his daughter-in-law, Janet Mixon, who co-owns Mixon’s Fruit Farms with her husband, Dean. “You can’t keep him out of the grove. It’s in his blood.” Mixon’s is also famous for its orange-and-vanilla swirl ice cream, which Courtney Schultz took advantage of while visiting with her brother, Colton, and their parents. Also make sure to stop by the garden, which Janet Mixon says is home to the largest koi pond in the country.

THE incredible journey: On the afternoon of June 7, Millie Somers peered out of her window as a black limousine pulled in front of her house. Thinking the driver was lost, she opened the door, only to hear him exclaim, “Mrs. Somers, I’m here to pick you up!” It was Millie’s 60th anniversary with her husband and high school sweetheart, John, whom she met at a football game in Michigan. Her children had organized the anniversary celebration, which included the limo ride, photos at Lido Beach and dinner at The Columbia Restaurant, on St. Armands Circle. “The kids outdid themselves,” Somers said. “We had seven days of nothing but celebrations. It was like getting married all over again.”

NATURAL SETTING: The Myakka Canopy Walkway, located along the Boylston Nature Trail, allows visitors of the park to observe life in the treetops of an oak and palm hammock. The walkway was completed in 2000 and was the first public treetop trail in North America. The walkway is suspended 25 feet above the ground and extends 100 feet through the hammock canopy. It is connected to a 74-foot tower, where visitors can get a view above the treetops.
