A Farewell to 41 by Bailey Anderson

On Friday November 30, Former President George H.W. Bush died at the age of 94, . Over the past 2 weeks, people all over America have been mourning the loss of our 41st President. Media outlets, family, and friends have paid tribute by sharing memories and reflecting on Bush’s character and legacy. Former President George H. Bush had a full, exciting life, filled with love, heartbreak, triumph, and defeat. As soon as he turned 18, Bush enlisted in in the U.S. Navy in order to become a combat pilot in World War II. During one of his 58 combat missions, his plane was struck, and he was rescued by a U.S. Navy submarine after parachuting into the Pacific Ocean. He came back to the United States in order to start a family with his new wife Barbara Bush. Together, they had 6 children, including the future 43rd U.S. president George W. Bush. After receiving a degree from Yale University, George H. Bush started a life of public service. He represented Texas in the House

of Representatives for two terms, served as an Ambassador to the United Nations, was Chairman of the Republican National Committee, was Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in the People’s Republic of China, and was the Director of Central Intelligence Agency. From 1980-1988, Bush served as the Vice President to Ronald Reagan. He extended his time in the White House after he was elected President in 1988.

2018 Midterm Wrap-UP by Mitchell Morrison Democrat Spin: Entering the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats looked to flip both the House and Senate amid the “blue wave.” However, despite the massive amount of fundraising and campaigning, Democrats only succeeded in winning the house and lost seats in the Senate. Going forward, the Democrats will need to cross off impeachment from their agenda, as well as begin a search for presidential candidates. Many of the presumed Democratic nominees in the 2020 election, such as Gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Gillum and Senatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke, were defeated in their home states. Democrats also will be faced

with naming a speaker of the House. Many of the newly elected House of Representative members were openly opposed to Nancy Pelosi retaking her seat. However, at the moment, it looks like Pelosi may be uncontested. On the bright side, Democrats should rejoice in the overwhelming amount of state legislative seats and governor seats they stole. Holding power in state legislature will be incredibly important when the 2020 census requires state legislature to redraw district lines. Republican Spin: Though they defended against the “blue wave,” Republicans by no means won this midterm. Many areas that President Trump won flipped blue or got very close. Likewise, even Republican strongholds such as

Although his presidency was not perfect, Bush led the U.S. through lots of changes, including the end of the Cold War and the falling of the Berlin wall. Even though he only served one term, Bush continued to serve the people of America, helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina along side the 42nd president, Bill Clinton. Former President Bush spent his time in retirement skydiving, riding in his boat, and spending

time with his family, even after being diagnosed with lower-body parkinsonism. On Wednesday December 5, George W. Bush gave a heartwarming eulogy at his father’s funeral, reflecting on his father’s personal and professional life. George H.W. Bush died around 7 months after his beloved wife Barbara Bush, who died on April 17.

Texas saw their closest statewide election in years. But of all the things that Republicans should worry about, losing the rustbelt states such as Virginia and Pennsylvania is the biggest deal. These states were proTrump and typically favor presidents who target the middle class. Losing these states show that President Trump’s policies may be following out of favor with middle-class votes. The rustbelt states are essential to winning the 2020 election. However,

the silver lining for Republicans lies in not only winning the Senate and flipping a few blue seats but winning the state of Florida. Republicans and President Trump will need every possible vote to defend the presidency, and Florida is a big step in the right direction.

Artist Guild Night Review by Sarah May On November 14th, BGA held its annual Artist Guild Night, which is described as a “BGA Honor Society for the Arts.” During assembly, Mrs. Snider explained Artist Guild as a “student-initiated group that was formed in 1987 at the request of two seniors who wanted some way to promote and encourage the students at BGA who were serious about the arts. From the start, the purpose of the Artist Guild has been to encourage excellence in the arts. To that end, admission is gained through competitive audition.” As a student, you can audition in fields such as Visual Arts, Literature, Dance, Drama, and Music. Each field has requirements one must fulfill in order to be accepted into the guild. For Visual Arts, one must submit a portfolio of at least 6 pieces demonstrating skill, creativity, and originality. Next, in Literature, the student must submit a portfolio of poems, short stories or a longer piece of creative writing; emphasis is on creative writing. In the area of dance, students are required to prepare two dances in different styles. In Drama, the student must prepare two contrasting monologues. For instance, one serious and one comic. Lastly, when auditioning for Music, one must prepare two contrasting songs. For example, singers might do one fast and one slow, preferably also different styles. Instrumentalists would do contrasting styles within their field. The purpose of these requirements is to show versatility as a musician.

Back on Campus: Mr. Wade by Drew Lamb

With Coach Wade returning to the academy, I felt it necessary to have an understanding of what this school means to him and what he wants to mean to the school. Since he has been removed from the school for only six years, Coach Wade said he finds a sweet spot between faculty and students. He feels close enough to his students to understand the aspects of high school that are often most difficult. He also feels close enough in age and maturity to his teachers feeling like part of there grouping as well. When asked what his favorite moments from high school were, his answer was receiving the Pinkerton Watch and his roles in the spring musical. Coach Wade said that his reasoning for coming back to the academy was to give back the community that gave him so much. He wants his classroom activities to be beneficial and will help his students succeed with the purpose of Character, Scholarship, and Excellence. Coach Wade wants to challenge and prepare his students within his classroom. Not only with literature skills and rid grammatical errors, but he also wants to prepare his students for real life with discussion and with communication. Coach Wade is a teacher who many kids can relate to and, yet respect, making his presence in this community known.

This year, the auditions were held one afternoon in October. Auditions usually go from 3:00 to 8:30. Along with outside judges, performers must audition for Mrs. Handelsman, Mrs. Snider, Mrs. Bandstra, Mrs. Helm, and Mrs. Wallace. The students perform their two pieces for the panel of judges and students are rated according to rubrics specific to each artistic field. For example, singers may be graded on tone and pitch, while visual artists are graded on craftsmanship and originality. After the judges discuss the auditions, a group of individuals is selected to be in the Artist Guild. In order to participate in Artist Guild, students must re-audition every year. In the group of students selected, Laura Abbott and Ray McHenry are the only four-year guild members, meaning they have been selected to be in Artist Guild freshman through senior year.

Science Outreach Experience by Ally Newkirk

On November 5, Emma Cloud, Katelyn Helberg, Paige LaRock, Jenna Diab, and I attended Belmont to go to the Celebrating the Women of Physical Science Outreach Event. The theme for the event this year was biophysics and career opportunities in the physical sciences. During this time we first listened to a career panel, which we learned about the different career paths a person could take if when they are older would like to go into physical sciences. The panel of people also taught us how to overcome setbacks and how to achieve certain goals in the field of science. These careers included commercial laboratories, law, scientific writing, research, and academia. We also got to participate in hands-on activities involving relationships between the human body and physics. Lastly, Dr. Hana Dobrovolny gave us a presentation about Infectious Physics: How physics can help us understand viral infections. This presentation taught us a lot about the research that Dr. Dobrovolny and her peers are going through to find out more information about viral infections that affect people in everyday life. The experience that the five of us had was great and participating in this event gave us a larger perspective of biophysics and the research behind many aspects in physical sciences including viral infections.

Thanksgiving Food Drive by Sara Grace Harney Every year the BGA Upper School partners with Graceworks, a nonprofit organization that provides food, clothing and financial assistance to many people and families around the Williamson County and Nashville area. This year, all students were asked to bring in five dollars for perishable foods and their assigned food item based on their advisory. Some of the foods include rice, peas, flour, sugar, granola bars, peanut butter, and much more. After the food was collected, several students volunteered to sort, bag, and transport items to Graceworks during their study hall and after school. By making this contribution, BGA was able to feed over forty families on Thanksgiving. Although this may seem like a small gesture, our donations have a huge impact on the community and have positively changed many families Thanksgiving experience.

Football Wrap-Up

Sports

Cross-Country Wrap-Up by Lindsay Phelps

by Nick Semptimphelter The 124th football team in BGA’s history was one to remember. They hosted a semifinal game which hadn’t happened in over a decade and made their first State Championship appearance since 2014. This senior class had gone 0-7 in middle school football their eighth-grade year showing the growth and dedication to this football program. Their final record was 11-3. The team fought through lots of adversity losing two straight games to CPA and ECS in the regular season and then finding their stride by winning 7 straight games to reach the State Championship. Even though the season did not end as everyone wanted, this senior class and team set the foundation for many successful seasons to come. Team 125 is up next.

This cross country season had a happy ending that reflected all of the miles and hard work put in up until the championship races. In the past two months, the cross country team competed in the Region Division II-A Meet and continued on to race in the State Meet at Steeplechase in Percy Warner Park. In the Region Meet at the end of October, many runners placed and advanced, and lots of goals were reached! Fifteen out of eighteen of our runners ran a personal best time just in that race. The JV boys team did a fantastic job of improving their times by twitter.com far. Nearly every runner set a PR time. The varsity boys finished 3rd in the region, and Lindsay Phelps finished 8th in the girls’ race as an individual, both qualifying for state. Of the boys, Trace Alexander (2nd place, 17:00) and Ian McCullough (8th place, 17:51) both individually qualified. Ian McCullough, Trace Alexander, and Lindsay Phelps were named All-Region. In early November, the team competed in the State Meet on the same course here in Nashville. The varsity boys (Cole Dennis, Jack Revere, Aidan McLay, Ian McCullough, Trace Alexander, Cole Beck Williams, Orion Clark, Nathan Evans) each ran a great race and they finished 8th as a team in the state. Of these runners, senior Ian McCullough individually placed in the top 25 with a PR of 17:50, and freshman Trace Alexander placed 7th, (season PR 17:00) and received All-state honors. Lindsay Phelps finished 27th in the girls’ race. Congratulations to Ian on a great last race! This past season has been a successful one! Congratulations to every runner for their amazing performances, hard work, and persistence. The team greatly appreciates our seniors, who led the team and will be missed! A big thank you to our coaches Mr. Johnson and Ms. Parker for pushing us to do our best and making this season a special one!

EPL at a Glance

by Jack Sauder We are a couple months into the 201819 NHL season now, and the Nashville Predators have a record of 17 wins 8 losses and 1 tie. As of right now, this places them at 4th overall in the league behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the biggest surprise, the Buffalo Sabres. Despite the drop in the league the Predators still sit in first place in the western conference, securing there spot in the playoffs. There are three Predators that need an honorable mention this month. Pekka Rinne, Colton Sissons, and Filip Forsberg. Rinne is currently first in the league in goals against with a 1.85 average. Colton Sissons is sitting at 6th overall in the NHL in the plus/minus (+/-) category with 14. A +/- is determined by taking the number of goals to score against while a player was on the ice and subtracting that from the number of goals scored for while on the ice. Then lastly, Filip Forsberg. Forsberg stands at number 11 overall for goals in the NHL with 14. Despite all the early success, the Predators have fallen off a bit this month with the injuries to P.K. Subban and Victor Arvidson. Both of these players are veterans who have been starting for the Preds. Regardless, 4th place in the NHL is never a bad spot to be in. Austin Watson Returns by Duke Waldrop Austin Watson, Nashville Predators forward, was arrested in June of 2018 on charges after allegedly striking his girlfriend. Watson was released on a bond of $4,500 on June 20th. He was sentenced to three-month probation, and inpatient program for alcohol and substance abuse and 26 weeks of batterer intervention. He was represented by Mark Puryear, BGA alum, and father to Michael Puryear class of 19’. Watson originally sentenced to a 27 game suspension by the NHL. Recently, the NHL changed the suspension to 18 games. Watson returned to the ice on November 15 when the Predators faced the Coyotes in Arizona. The Preds have had a record of 7-6 since his return (as of December 11).

Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham are familiar names to many of us here at the Academy, but not something entirely understood. Whether it’s teachers like Mr. Kesler or Mr. Millard voicing their love of Chelsea, Mr. Dennis and his support of Arsenal, or Mr. Harry’s (remember him?) Tottenham Hotspurs fandom, the big six’s presence is ever-expanding in the world, especially in America. Despite this, Liverpool and Arsenal are not as ever-present as UT, the Predators, or even the Titans. Why? To put it simply: a lack of understanding. The typical European league structure is quintessentially foreign to America. The idea of draws and a lack of playoffs are huge turn-offs for most American Football fans. Soccer is thought of as “boring” by most Americans. “They don’t score enough goals!” screams the hockey fan, ignoring that more goals are scored on average in soccer than in hockey (2.7 to 2.8). So, I’m here to tell you why soccer is awesome, how and why it works, and how to pick your own “big six” team. How It Works: There are 20 teams in the English Premier League. 38 games are played (one home and away for each team) across a 9-month long season. Teams get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. The season culminates in the crowning of the Premier League Champions after the last round of fixtures has been played. continue on Calendar page

Movie Review by Alex Pareigis The movie Bohemian Rhapsody is dedicated to celebrating the band Queen with a focus on the extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury (played by Rami Malek). The film follows the formation of the band through their most beloved songs and the way the band was able to captivate audiences. It also shows the great friendship between Mary Austin (played by Lucy Boynton) and Freddie, of which the song “Love of My Life” is based on. As the band becomes more popular, the film takes a dark turn to show the darker influences surrounding Freddie, which created a strain on the band’s

friendship. Later, Freddie would even try to pursue a solo career. After the band’s quick break up, Freddie is able to reunite with his bandmates after recently been diagnosed with Aids. The band is able to perform one of the greatest performances ever for the Live Aid concert. Even after receiving some harsh reviews, the movie Bohemian Rhapsody still stands strong, and the biopic just crossed the $500 million mark worldwide. The film continues the legacy of Queen just as Freddie would have wanted, by inspiring everyone who watches it to embrace themselves, as well as leaving you with the song “Bohemian Rhapsody” stuck in your head.

Advice Column Anonymous Asked: How do you give compliments properly? When I give people compliments, they seem to get uncomfortable. How do I give them compliments so that they don’t feel bad? Dear Anonymous, Thank you for submitting such a thoughtful and perceptive question to the advice column! You are clearly a kind hearted person who cares about the wellbeing of those around you. Oh my, I just gave you a compliment! A proper compliment is a joyous gift from the heart. When sincerely offered as an expression of genuine appreciation, and delivered in the proper context, a complement elevates our spirits and builds bonds of trust between the giver and the receiver. But we should also remember that a proper compliment can be a very intimate thing. It is a way of saying that you see the other person and you appreciate who they are. Depending on the nature of the comple-

ment and the nature of your relationship with the person, a compliment can be positive and welcomed, or it can be disconcerting and uncomfortable. So why is it that sometimes we sense that the compliments we offer are not being received as intended? Why does our gift sometimes cause discomfort and distance rather than warmth and closeness? Complimenting others is a delicate art. In order to compliment someone successfully, the compliment-giver must consider a number of important issues. First, what is the context of the situation? Who is it that you would like to compliment? Who else will be present? The nature of the complement will change depending on your relationship with the receiver of the complement and the social setting in which the complement is offered. Generally speaking, compliments offered in a public setting should be more general and less intimate. For example, approaching a classmate at lunchtime and complimenting the performance of his

sports team at last night’s game is appropriate and likely to be appreciated. On the other hand, approaching him in the same setting and complimenting him his new haircut and the way it frames his face, no matter how sincere, is likely to elicit a less than optimal response. Second, why is the compliment being offered? Are you seeking to share a sincerely held opinion, or are you seeking to flatter someone in order to gain a social advantage? Remember that a proper compliment is a gift, and gifts are given with no expectation of return. If your motives are less than pure, the receiver is likely to detect this and your compliment may fall flat. Third, is the nature of the compliment appropriate to the nature of the relationship? Compliments on achievements, fashion sense or other talents are normally acceptable, but more personal compliments can sometimes be uncomfortable or intrusive. Intimacy is a privilege that is earned over time and is built on mutual

trust and appreciation. Whether you are dealing with a friendship or a potential romantic relationship, it is wise to personalize compliments carefully and thoughtfully and to offer such compliments in a private setting. As a rule of thumb, if you are never alone with the compliment receiver you should probably avoid getting overly personal with your compliments. Keep your appreciation at a less personal level until you have earned a relationship of trust. Finally, understand that some people are just uncomfortable with compliments and have difficulty showing their appreciation. It can be an act of kindness to deliver your compliment matter of factly and sincerely and then continue with your conversation. You shouldn’t necessarily wait for a response. Remember, a compliment is a gift, and gifts are offered freely with no expectation of a return. If you sense discomfort, you can change the subject so that the other person doesn’t have to find a way to awkwardly say thank you.

EPL at a Glance (continued)

No playoffs, no wildcards; whoever has the most amount of points at the end of the season is the champion! Teams in the top 6-7 places qualify for one of two European competitions (1-4 Champions League, 5-6/7 Europa League), which brings money and prestige to the clubs that earned them as well as helping them attract better players. The bottom three teams are relegated to the second tier of professional soccer in England (the EFL Championship) while the best three teams from the lower league are brought up for the next Premier League season. This helps talent and sustained success flow to the top, while not allowing clubs to rest on their laurels and collect paychecks for finishing bottom of the league every year. Additionally, most English fans believe that playoffs aren’t fair, due to their habit of awarding the title of champion to a “lucky” team that isn’t the best in the league. For example, last year’s Super Bowl Champions, The Eagles, had a record of 4-6, whereas the Patriots (the team they beat in the final) had a record of 7-3. The Patriots were a better team based off of this logic! And to further this point, the Chiefs, the Rams, and the Saints all had better records than the two Super Bowl finalists (9-2, 10-1, 10-1)! Yes, this makes for more exciting storylines, higher stakes, and overall more entertaining football, and that’s why the England FA (Football Association) created the FA Cup. The FA Cup is a secondary competition that teams across all of England’s professional leagues (of which there are four in descending tiers) enter in. It is strictly a knockout-based format: if you lose, you’re out. Usually one of the Premier League teams win the trophy, but small teams often make it to the latter stages of the competition, playing great teams and earning more money for them to use to build future success. In the past 10 years, 5 teams outside of the top ten Premier League teams have made it to the final, and in 2008 a small team called Portsmouth actually won it! These wins are rare, but all the more special for it! So now that you have a basic understanding of how the league works, it’s time to get to know the “big six” (listed in order of all-time Premier League success). Manchester United: Manchester United are in 7th place (at the time of writing), and have finished 2nd, 6th, and 5th in the past three years. Historically the most dominant team in the Premier League, United have won 13 Premier League titles since the league’s founding in 1992. All of these titles came under the stewardship of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with the last one coming in his final season in charge (2012/13). United have a history of playing attacking football, usually with two strikers, and have been the home of great players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane, and Rio Ferdinand. United’s current manager is former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho. Mourinho has won 3 Premier League titles, all with Chelsea,

and is known for his pragmatic and often defensive approach to the game. United’s star player is Paul Pogba, a central midfielder, a member of France’s 2018 World Cup winning team, and an overall beast on FIFA. If you’re hunting for glory and like a good comeback story, sticking with United for the next couple years could prove to be fortuitous. Chelsea: Chelsea is in 4th place (at the time of writing), and have finished 5th, 1st, and 10th in the past three years. Chelsea hasn’t always been a domestic powerhouse, with their first title being won in 2005 after Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich bought the club and funneled hundreds of millions of dollars into it. Chelsea has won 5 titles since 2005, with three coming under Jose Mourinho, one under Carlo Ancelotti, and one under Antonio Conte. Traditionally a more defensively minded side, Chelsea’s new manager, Maurizio Sarri, has taken the club in a more attacking direction. Chelsea’s legends mostly exist within the span of the last decade and a half (ie. when they were good), and consist of the likes of homegrown talent such as Frank Lampard and John Terry, in addition to foreign superstars such as Ivorian striker Didier Drogba. Chelsea’s current star player is Belgian leftwinger Eden Hazard who is arguably the best player in the Premier League. If you’re not a fan of consistency and would like to experience being an underdog and a champion, Chelsea is a good bet for you. Arsenal: Arsenal is in 5th place (at the time of writing), and have finished 6th, 5th, and 2nd in the past three years. Arsenal has only finished outside the top four 5 out of a possible 26 times, with two of those instances happening in the last two seasons. Arsenal is consistently second best to the top dogs of any given season, which makes Arsenal a frustrating club to support (speaking from experience). After saying “au revoir” to long-time manager Arsène Wenger, whose time at the club included 3 Premier League titles, 7 FA Cups, a Champions League Final appearance, and an unbeaten title-winning season in 2003/04, Arsenal has appointed a new manager which has given new life to a formerly stale team. Unai Emery (the aforementioned new manager) has turned Arsenal into a more solid side and has got them putting in a real challenge for the top four. Arsenal’s past greats include the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Dennis Bergkamp; all players that were at one time the best in their respective positions. Arsenal’s star player is German World Cup Winner, Mesut Ӧzil. Regarded by most to be the best attacking midfielder in the world, Ӧzil (aka “The Assist King”) can run attacks on his own, despite his reliance on the ability of his attacking partners. If a rich history in addition to an attacking mentality is what you’re looking for (in addition to some good excuses to complain), Arsenal is the team for you. Milkshake Review by Izzy Donoghue by Dalia Diab This month for our food review, we went to Sonic and tested nine of their classic milkshake flavors.

Quad Question With Jad

“What do you want for Christmas?”

Disclaimer: The shakes we reviewed were part of Sonic’s Classic and Master Milkshakes selection (not their Blasts). Rankings (from best to worst) : 1. Chocolate - A classic flavor. You can never go wrong with chocolate. 2. Caramel - Not to strong but caramel flavor is still present. 3.Oreo chocolate - Tasted like hot fudge but had oreos in it. 4. Hot Fudge - Tasted like hot cocoa. A little bit bitter. 5.Vanilla - A basic flavor. Not the best but not the worst. 6. Banana - Tasted like actual bananas. Enough said. 7. Peanut Butter - Too nutty. 8. Strawberry - Tasted artificial and medicine-like. 9. Cheesecake - Tasted like actual cheese. We did not appreciate that.

Dolan Eckart, Senior “You know, solving world hunger would probably be the first thing. You’ve got to do it for the children. You’ve got to do it for the children. Um, is it like 3?” “Give me top 2”- Jad ”Top 2? What I want for Christmas? I want you Jad. I want you for Christmas.”

In summary, if you are interested in a fast, easy, and tasty dessert head to Sonic for a classic or master milkshake. Chocolate and Caramel are a delicious staple on the Sonic menu and never disappoint.

Emma Smith, Senior “I want a Bonaroo ticket.”

Netflix Update

HungryForever.com

by Parker Daniel Kicking off the Christmas season, Netflix recently put out The Christmas Chronicles, a movie where a brother and sister’s curiosity got the best of them. As a young girl, she wanted to pull an all nighter for when Santa comes to her house. But when she jumps into the sleigh to get a closer look, the sleigh goes down and Christmas goes on a pause. It’s up to the sister and the brother to save Christmas for the rest of the world. As another option, the movie Elf will surely put a smile on the faces of anyone that watches it. The movie is about a lost Elf trying to find his real father when he realizes he doesn’t fit in with the other elves at the North Pole. He realizes his real father not only isn’t in the Christmas spirit, but is also on the naughty list. He makes it his personal mission to show everyone in New York that Santa is real and anyone can be put back on the nice list.
