Upper School 2014-2015

Battle Ground Academy educates students through a well-rounded, vigorous, and comprehensive collegepreparatory program, which fosters physical health, personal creativity, and intellectual attainments

Graduation Requirements: • English: 4 credits (Regular and honors classes offered in the 9th and 10th grades; regular and Advanced Placement classes offered in the 11th and 12th grades) • Math: 4 credits (Classes will be determined by whether a student is recommended for the standard or honors track.) A math course must be taken in each year of high school. • History: 31/2 credits (Ancient History is required if a student is enrolled in the 9th grade. World History standard and honors classes are offered in the 10th grade. Juniors take standard or Advanced Placement U.S. History classes. Seniors elect 20th Century History or Advanced Placement Modern European History.) • Science: 3 credits (Class of 2015: Biology or Honors Biology, Chemistry or Honors Chemistry and a credit of science in 11th or 12th grade are required. Class of 2016 and beyond: Conceptual Physics or Honors Conceptual Physics, Chemistry or Honors Chemistry, and Biology or Honors Biology are required.) • Foreign Language: Students must earn 2 credits in one foreign language in the upper school. Starting with the Class of 2017, all students must complete the third level in one foreign language. • Fine Arts: 1 credit in either instrumental music, choral music, art or theatre. • Speech: 1/2 credit is required only if a student attends 9th grade at BGA. • Wellness: 1 credit • Electives: 2 credits from areas above or computer. • Total: 21 credits To ensure that students are well prepared to meet their college and career goals, students’ advisors and upper school administrators assist students in formulating their schedules each year. Academic Load Each semester a student must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 full-credit courses, 4 of which must come from the major academic disciplines. Athletic Eligibility Athletes in particular should note that a ruling of the Tennessee Secondary Athletic Association requires that a student pass five full courses from the previous semester to be eligible to participate in TSSAA-sanctioned competitions during the current semester.

Courses proceeded by an asterisk (*) are not core academic courses. Electives cannot be taken in place of courses required on any grade level. All students are required to earn one credit in Wellness. This requirement can be waived under certain conditions. No student is allowed to take a required course in summer school except in cases of make-up work.

Grading Scale

AP Scores

The grade point average is cumulative, including all semesters at BGA in grades 9-12. The grades from all subjects are used to compute the GPA.

In May of 2014, 100 BGA juniors and seniors completed 175 AP exams and received scores of 3 or higher on 163 exams (93%) and scores of 4 or 5 on 115 exams (65%).

Weighting: .5 added to Quality Points for Honors Classes 1.0 added to Quality Points for Advanced Placement Classes
