INTRODUC TION Nancy Margolis Many artists think about trying something radically new, but hesitate. This exhibition dared four artists who have each mastered artistic methods and processes to try something artistically different, to attempt an unfamiliar technique or a new skill. What will be the outcomes of their risk-taking? Will the results be disappointing, or might they lead to the discovery of new advances in their work? The four artists participating in I Dare! | Dare I? have created a small number of original paintings that reflect experimental thinking and a new process or theme, whether through working on a larger scale, changing a tried-and-true process, tackling a difficult color, or revisiting an old project with fresh eyes. How have these artistic risks affected each artist’s thinking in moving forward? What will they—and we—learn from the ways they have pushed beyond their familiar, artistic boundaries?

The idea of daring my practice is timely. 2017 has been steeped in challenge artistically and I Dare! | Dare I? gives a platform to share it. The pieces exhibited in the show all in some way break from my safety net, whether by means of loosening up, tightening up, seeing a trickier, more complicated and somewhat larger piece through in a short period of time, and employing my choice stage for painting (primed panel) exclusively for pencil. This last referenced leap speaks to my final piece of the year, which I am creating in this last month for the exhibition at Nancy Margolis Gallery. I love to draw and I love to paint and I do both together in my panel pieces. I tend to let my pencil drawings live on paper. It has been my longtime daydream to develop a graphite drawing on panel as I would a paper work. Ordinarily I find myself half committed to making such work a reality and then end up giving in to the lure of the oil paint, the appeal of color. So I have decided for this show to create a full drawing on panel, totally out of my comfort zone. As I am currently in the midst of making this piece I can attest that this is tricky for me; I see the paints waving over there and want to give them work. Alas, I am too curious as to where the graphite on panel can go in my world, and I cannot refuse a dare.

For the Ribbon series of paintings, I want to push past the typical end point of my process and make that the new beginning point. I pour paint onto a flat, smooth surface in individual 1/4� strips with approximately equal lengths, using a continuous flow of different color paint to create a swirling gradient from one line of paint to the next, then let it dry. After that, I peel off the dried paint strips one at a time by hand, before they adhere to the smooth surface. I usually consider my paintings finished once the paint dries, however, for these paintings I felt the actual painting process starts in the next step. I then arrange the ribbons of paint onto a canvas. I begin by placing the strips in the order in which they were created, but partly overlapping each other. I attempt to place them as evenly as possible, but also allow the inconsistencies and variations in the dried paint ribbons to guide the process. The overlapping creates texture, and the variation in the line and color produces an optical effect, both of which I welcome. The end result is a landscape of softly shifting colors. The creation of these paintings on a large scale felt critical since size exposes the effects of the process with greater depth, revealing the relationship between the interaction of the paint’s properties and my manipulation of it. In the Reticulum series, I followed a similar process, however, I changed the manner in which I arranged the ribbons. For these I wove the ribbons together to form tightly knit nets in a relatively rectangular shape. I then mounted them onto museum board. Creating this new work has helped teach me to make better use of my intuition, and depend less on the systemic processes that define much of my earlier work. By opening up my process this way, I challenge myself as a painter and hopefully push painting as a whole further. Additionally, I feel the viewer will be able to engage with my paintings on a more emotional, rather than technical, level. Overall, these paintings reveal to me that even a slight variation in the order of a process can create new pictorial complexity.

Recently in the studio I have been thinking about how to paint temperature, specifically the cold weather of the east coast. Many times my paintings are anchored by a specific sense of light or time of day. Expanding on that, I’ve been trying to paint the anticipated sensations of the winter months. This work came about when I decided to revisit painting with overwhelming white. For many years I worked away from white, fearing it [had] become too recurrent. So here I’m using white very purposefully in each painting: as thin, drafty air, as the physical but shifting shape of snow, as harsh, bright light. The cold, though seemingly invisible, creates very specific visual situations. By rendering those I wonder if the paintings can tap into the fuller sensory experience of our frigid winter.

I had a baby boy in August of 2016 and became his full time care giver. I started a 4’ x 4’ painting of a black and white striped bow shortly after he was born, figuring that I would paint something that my son would enjoy looking at as his eyesight developed. I painted here and there, when he was napping and on days when my husband could lend a hand, but even after a year the painting was still not done. Most of my free time, of which there was very little, I myself wanted to nap, because I was exhausted from not getting much sleep, nursing my son throughout the night. When I was dared by the gallery to challenge myself to make new work, I thought this is the perfect opportunity for me. There are lots of new things that I would like to try. The biggest part of the challenge was to send my son to daycare at 15 months so that I could have my undivided attention for part of the days during the week to decide what new thing and actually start doing it. Now that my son is enrolled in a very nice daycare program with other sweet children, and I’m totally happy with the people who are taking good care of him, the first thing on my list is to finish the black and white bow painting, which is now wrapping up nicely, pun intended. Next I want to do something completely different and utilize a wallpaper that I collaborated in making with Cavern Home. At first, I was thinking I would hang the bow painting on a wall or on panels covered in the wallpaper, but I didn’t like the idea of the wallpaper simply being an installation prop and discarding it after the show. The wallpaper is silkscreened, beautiful and costly to make and install, so I opted for another solution. I’m planning to adhere the paper to various canvases which I can then paint on and hang around the bow, thus accomplishing two things. First the wallpaper will be on cavases surrounding the bow creating the visual effect of the wallpaper around the bow that I was looking for, and secondly, these wallpapered canvases will be paintings unto themselves as I plan to embellish the wallpaper by painting things directly on it.
