01 Render This project required creating a set of architectural representations of a chosen building. The building chosen was Thorncrown Chapel by Fay Jones built in 1980.

The Project

When founder Jim Reed approached Fay Jones to design “a little chapel... to provide wayfarers a place for relaxation.” (Adams 2001, 32), he didnt expect the richness and elemental temple that is the Thorncrown Chapel in Arkansas. Given a tight budget and material restrictions in regards to preserving the environment during construction, Jones used the backdrop of the Arkansas forest in conjunction with interlocking trusses to create a chapel which produces both deliberate and natural shadows and light. This chapel now draws 2,000 people per day to its relatively small building and has Sunday religious services with approximately 300 people present. Fay Jones’ desire to “move people in a special way” (Adams 2001, 32) 20 years on continues as thousands visit this place of meditation which brings harmony between a manmade chapel and the backdrop of the Arkansas Forest.

Design

Jones desired to design and create Thorncrown to have the atmosphere and feeling of a religious centre. The Thorncrown is “struck by the silence of its setting (Adams 2001, 32) and hence has a serene, calming feeling surrounding and within the building. The Thorncrown uses typical religious building structures including high ceilings, large gothic doors, an elevated stage, long seated chairs and a large cross symbol replicating religious principles past down through history. The simplicity in the materials used, stone, wood and glass, causes the building to have a smooth coherence in materials without causing distraction from the purpose of the religion. The single truss form that is simply multiplied across to create the form adds a magical feel to the building yet visually doesn’t distract occupants from their religious practicalities. Jones ensures every aspect from materials to form compliments his vision of creating a religious centre.

Environment A substantial part of the Thorncrown is its relationship and integration with the external environment. The chapel was designed with a long and narrow glass opening in the ceiling to allow for natural sunlight to shine within the building and to illuminate the chapel during daylight. Jones didn’t design or include any drainage or water systems in the Thorncrown therefore a plumbing system was not necessary in the chapel. The large doors allow for ventilation within the building. Jones did not include any opening windows in order for the chapel to maintain its thermal properties. Air Conditioning has been installed within the Thorncrown to allow for comfort during wedding ceremonies and services.

Tectonic The Thorncrown Chapel is made up of a truss system with planar glass walls covering the exposed areas of the truss to create an enclosed space. The main tectonic feature of the truss system is the four diagonal members that join in the central section of the truss. The four diagonal members of the truss are joined on the corners hence leaving a space in the center to allow for light to pass through (shown in the render below). This tectonic detail particularly allows rays of natural light and shadow to pass through inside the building. This same tectonic detail is used to join each central section across the chapel.

Parametric The parametric addition is a pipeline system that covers the front of the chapel like a curtain and continues to drape through the interior of the chapel. This adds a shadow to the interior and front of the chapel and also adds to tectonic appearance of the chapel.
