How We Met written & illustrated by Nancy Fang
I thought it was just going to be a date.
He Tindered messaged me asking if I wanted to get coffee at Blueprint.
I got dressed, put on makeup, and walked over.
I didn’t immediately recognize him.
He didn’t have a beard in his pictures, but he was still attractive and stylishly dressed.
I talked about growing up in the South as a Chinese-American girl...
and switching from pre-med to art.
He talked about his rough childhood in Ferguson, skateboarding, and breakdancing.
We bonded over...
tattoos and...
music.
Soon an hour passed.
He had to run errands while I had work-study. So we made dinner plans.
I couldn’t stop thinking about him.
We talked more about...
music,
religion,
movies,
family,
and anxiety.
He asked to go over to my place afterwards.
Thankfully my roommate wasn’t back from Thanksgiving break yet.
I just thought it was going to be a date, but I ended up falling in love with someone caring, thoughtful, and able to understand feeling out of place.
