I

’ve been busier than ever recently with events related to wellness and green living, and continue to be impressed at the level of energy and enthusiasm the community brings to both issues. I attended three “first-annual” events: the American Health & Wellness Fair in Bloomfield, the Awaken Wellness Fair in Fort Lee, and the Highlands Festival in Waterloo Village. Based on the quality of the exhibitors and the turnout of attendees, they’re sure to become annual events. This week, I and at least 200 other people attended a Sustainability Summit, co-convened by Sustainable Jersey and other nonprofit and government-affiliated groups. The groups work together to promote local sustainability, including responsible land use, transportation, and energy policies. As an ex-City of New York policy wonk, I was familiar with the discussion and analysis. As a current business owner, I was a bit skeptical. Have the years of effort and millions of dollars in grants done anything to further local sustainability? Or is it a self-serving exercise, meant to make us all feel good and the sponsors look good? As I said, I’m an expolicy wonk. Of course, lots of results were touted. Collectively, Sustainable Jersey communities have implemented more than 4,000 sustainability initiatives. But the most encouraging aspect was that the organizers were taking stock and asking the same questions. “What have we really achieved?” “How do we ensure our efforts are meaningful?” “How do we even define sustainability?” I’m curious, too, and anxious to learn the answers. If you want to become part of the dialogue, read the “sustainability briefs” posted on SustainableJersey.com, and connect with your local Green Team if your municipality has one. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite green and healthy businesses at NaturalAwakeningsNJ.com. They love getting your support!

Holistic Evening Comes to Rutherfurd Hall

Ambient Performance Debut Receives Raves at Boonton Community Center

E

naya Publishing’s CEO/artist Tabitha Mancini released and performed the new label’s first endeavor, An Ambient Journey: The 8 Months of Enaya, to a crowd of enthusiasts at Boonton’s Growing with the Season’s community center on September 22. A compilation of meditative instrumental guitar tracks by 26 year-old singer-songwriter Mancini, this ambient album marks the introduction of a new artist to the New York-New Jersey music scene. Although Mancini is a vocalist, Enaya Publishing’s ambient music is designed as “a tool to create a relaxed, introspective atmosphere that allows the listener to focus more on the self and whatever task is at hand—painting, meditation, rest/ relaxation, or just me time,” she explains. “It may even go so far as to create and promote a truly transcendental experience.” Enaya Publishing’s fundamental philosophy revolves around Mancini’s belief that “the introspective process and the necessary engagement in that self-reflective/cosmic/wonderment mindset” is what lies at the heart of spiritual growth and consciousness for most people. She sees a need for such introspection, especially in this day and age, “where technology moves so fast that breath is easily lost in near-constant overstimulation.” Enaya Publishing seeks to produce and promote solo, compilation, and collaborative works intended to develop personal empowerment for and with its conscious content creators. Committed to a communal/humanitarian view of the world, Enaya Publishing accepts submissions from musicians, writers, and other artists. To learn more, or to submit works for consideration, visit EnayaPublishing.com. See ad on page 12.

Senate Passes Naturopathic Medicine Week Resolution

I

n mid-September, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating October 7– October 13 as Naturopathic Medicine Week. The resolution recognizes the value of naturopathic medicine in providing “safe, effective, and affordable health care” and encourages Americans to learn about the role of naturopathic physicians in preventing chronic and debilitating conditions. Passage of this resolution is an historic achievement for naturopathic medicine. Congress has now officially recognized the important role naturopathic medicine plays in effectively addressing the nation’s health-care needs as well as in addressing the increasingly severe shortage of primary care physicians. Morris Twp.: Free public event on the dangers of fracking to the Garden State

addirectory

W

ould you like fresh lemon or toxic chemicals with your water? CommunityEarth, co-hosting with Food & Water Watch, offers a free public event featuring Ray Kemble, a well-known whistleblower and anti-fracking activist on Friday, October 4, at the Unity Charter School, 1 Evergreen Place, Morris Township, from 6:30 – 9pm. Light refreshments, including clean drinking water, will be served. Attendees will learn what fracking is, how New Jersey is affected by fracking practices in Pennsylvania, and what we can do to ensure drinkable water in our future. Kemble, a former employee for the gas industry, began speaking out about the dangers of hydraulic fracking, in which highly pressurized water mixed with sand and chemicals is injected into the ground to release natural gas, after his groundwater was contaminated through the illegal dumping of fracking waste in his hometown of Dimock, Pennsylvania. His story was featured in the film Drill Baby Drill. “Dimock is an example of what communities face when fracking comes to their town,” said Jim Walsh, New Jersey director of Food & Water Watch, and a panel participant. “Although [fracking is] not practiced here yet, radioactive fracking waste has come to our state, and fracking wells are not far off.” The panel of experts will share their experiences and stories of how to fight the fracking industry and use the collective power of individuals to protect the resource most critical to survival – water. Donations are welcome to cover event costs. To register, visit http://www.meetup.com/CommunityEarth/events/137948512/ or email Barbara Taylor at CommunityearthMEDIA@gmail.com.

Integrative Wellness Network Presents YMCA of Eastern Union County Participates Discussion on Decreasing in Diabetes Prevention Program Inflammation he YMCA of Eastern Union County is one

T

of 91 Ys nationwide participating in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a lifestyle modification program that helps people with prediabetes reduce their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. The program provides tips to help people learn about eating healthier, increasing physical activity and making other simple lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of diabetes. Diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve disease. New classes will begin November 2013 in Rahway, Union and Elizabeth. The program is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The YMCA’s DPP is based on research conducted by the National Institutes of Health and Indiana University. Their studies show that losing a moderate amount of weight and increasing physical activity reduces the number of cases of Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program will help participants adopt simple lifestyle changes in a oneyear-long program led by a lifestyle coach. During the first sixteen weeks, the group will meet regularly for an hour to discuss related topics including fat intake, stress, physical activity, calorie balance, and negative thoughts, among others. The goal is for each participant to lose seven percent of his or her body weight and accumulate up to 150 minutes of physical activity by the end of the program. About 79 million adults in the United States have prediabetes — and many of them are not aware that they do or that they’re at risk. Those with prediabetes are likely to develop Type 2 diabetes within 10 years unless they take steps to prevent or delay the disease. For more information, contact Michael Johnson at 908-249-4809 or email Mjohnson@ymcaeuc.org.

n Tuesday, October 15, at 7 pm, the monthly meeting of the Integrative Wellness Network (IWN), at the Presbyterian Church, 65 South Street, Morristown, features a talk by Dr. Cathy Farrell of the Center for Optimal Health, who’ll discuss ways to decrease the effects of inflammation in the body. n Saturday, November 16, from 9:30am to 3pm, the Waterloo United Methodist Church, on the grounds of historic Waterloo Village, in Stanhope, will hold a retreat to banish fear and replace it with love — in our bodies, our minds, and our souls. This full-day event is devoted to conquering fear and the pain it creates in our lives. The retreat includes guided meditation, yoga, spiritual learning, and holy conferencing. Its aim is to help participants find the love within and gain the clarity, support, and spiritual strength required to leave behind a life of stories and excuses and to access a life of authenticity and inherent dignity. Through dialogue, experiential practices, and guided explorations, participants confront their fears and explore the generosity, wisdom, and peace found in love. The church, which describes itself as an “open and embracing community, welcoming persons from a variety of cultural, economic, and religious traditions,” welcomes people of all ages and religious beliefs. The retreat, held at the Museum Gift Shop and Meeting House, behind the church, features a vegetarian lunch, and there will be an optional yoga class offered from 8:30 to 9:15am. healthbriefs Vitamins in Spray Form Provide Superior Absorption

By Janet Ryan, wellness consultant, Wellness Solutions

S

pray vitamins are a patented solution for delivering high-grade vitamins, minerals, amino acids and herbs. They are absorbed quickly and effectively through buccal absorption, which is through the tissues in the mouth or the buccal mucosa. Since the nutrients are micronized, there is no need for the stomach to digest them. Those with impaired digestion will benefit greatly from this form of efficient nutrient absorption. In general, spray vitamins provide up to 98 percent absorption of nutrients versus other supplement forms that provide as little as 10 percent absorption. Pills and capsules require thick layers of chalk and gelatin to protect them from oxidation by air and light. This slows absorption and can create the ill effects many people associate with pill forms. Spray vitamins offer superior absorption, are priced affordably and are easy to take with you wherever you go to support your health. For a free brochure or to order a kit, call Wellness Solutions at 973-417-7993. They are also currently available at Grassroots Natural Market, 66 Morris Street, in Morristown.

A healthy spine is more than the basis of good posture—it is a harbinger of sound emotional and physical health, according to practitioners of holistic chiropractic care. Those seeking relief from back pain and other common spinerelated conditions might do well to exchange pain-masking drugs for more lasting relief from professional adjustments. All chiropractic can be considered alternative medicine, because practitioners do not prescribe drugs or surgery. Instead, these doctors rely on manual therapies such as spinal manipulation to improve function and provide pain relief for conditions ranging from simple sprains and strains to herniated discs and sciatica. Yet, holistic chiropractors go beyond treatment of structural problems, like a misaligned spine, to address root causes. Michael Roth, a Ventura, California, chiropractor who has been practicing holistic methods for nearly 20 years, points out that, “Basic spinal manipulation does not address the mind-body connection. A holistic chiropractor recognizes that symptoms are the body’s way of adapting to some environmental stressor. If the spine is adapting to a stressor, that’s not the cause of the problem, simply the effect.” Holistic chiropractors typically can suggest complementary measures such as massage, yoga, naturopathy or physical therapy for a more integrated and comprehensive treatment approach. Beyond adjusting the spine, they may also prescribe adjustments to diet, exercise and other lifestyle elements, depending on their understanding of an individual’s optimum path to wellness. Before placing one’s care in someone else’s hands, ask for credentials and seek out reviews from former patients. Good health—and a happy spine—begin with an educated and empowered patient.

Dulse harvested from October to January usually has the highest protein content. This functional food also contributes levels of essential amino acids such as leucine, valine and methionine, similar to those contained in legumes like peas or beans. It may even help protect against cardiovascular disease. The Agriculture and Food Development Authority reports that for the first time, researchers have identified a renin-inhibitory peptide in dulse that helps to reduce high blood pressure, like ACE-1 inhibitors commonly used in drug therapy.

Climate Science Curriculum Update Millions of young Americans are beginning to learn about climate change and associated science in the classroom. Next Generation Science Standards (NextGenScience.org), which have been adopted by 26 states and are under consideration by 15 more, teach how and why fossil fuel emissions are a causal factor in overheating the world. The previous federal science teaching standards, published in 1996, avoided the issues of evolution and climate change. Scientists and educators jointly developed the new standards with states’ input to help students distinguish between scientific fact, religious beliefs and political opinion. Eco-Power Tower Meet the World’s Greenest Office Building

Even on cloudy days, the photovoltaic-paneled roof of the Bullitt Center, in Seattle, Washington, generates all the electricity the six-story structure requires. Inside, commercial office space is equipped with composting toilets, rainwater showers and a glass-enclosed stairway to encourage climbing exercise over riding the elevator. The Bullitt Foundation, founded in 1952, has focused since the 1990s on helping cities function more like ecosystems. Seattle’s new building not only provides space for ecoconscious tenants, but also functions as a learning center, demonstrating how people and businesses can coexist more in harmony with nature. The Bullitt Center was constructed according to a demanding green building certification program called the Living Building Challenge, which lists zero net use of energy and water among its many requirements. The standards far surpass those of the better-known Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. Founder Jason McLennan says the challenge is to encourage others to build more enjoyable, sustainable and affordable structures around the world.

Pivot Point

Solar Panels Almost Breaking Even At current growth rates, solar energy could be harnessed to produce 10 percent of the world’s electricity by 2020. But the greater benefit of clean solar power relies on first realizing an efficient initial payback for all the energy needed to produce the panels. To make polysilicon, the basic building block of most solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, silica rock must be melted at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, using electricity from mostly coal-fired power plants. Stanford University researchers believe that a tipping point when clean electricity from installed solar panels surpasses the energy going into the industry’s continued growth will occur by 2015. As the industry has advanced, it’s required ever less energy and silicon to manufacture and install solar PV panels, along with less wasted silicon, according to Stanford University’s Global Climate & Energy Project. Advances in solar cell efficiency requires fewer panels, and new thin-film solar panels leave out silicon altogether. Source: Sustainable Business News

T

he theme for 2013 is “Get Vertical,” encouraging Americans to get off their duffs, out of their office chairs and sofas, and into physical activity. Chiropractic is more than a cure for back pain, focusing on disorders of the entire musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The spine, which carries nerves to all parts of the body, is the focus of the chiropractor’s hands, reducing pain and restoring or enhancing joint function. For newcomers to chiropractic, some of the terms may be unknown or confusing. This glossary, provided by and used with permission from the Kansas Chiropractic Foundation (KansasChiroFoundation.org) provides definitions of terms and explanations of procedures.

Natural Awakenings’ 2013 Chiropractic Guide

Chiropractic Techniques Lend a Helping Hand

Activator

Classified as a light force technique, which was designed by Dr. Arlan Fuhr. It employees a small hand-held instrument which delivers a quick and precise adjustment to the spine to help reduce subluxations.

Acupressure

Acupressure is manual pressure applied to specific acupuncture points with the intention of stimulating neurological flow to various organs, glands or tissues, with the purpose of returning the body to a normal status.

National Chiropractic Health Month, celebrated in October, looks at the importance of joint health at all stages of life, and what people can do to keep their joints functioning Acupuncture properly. The annual celebration is an outreach program of Acupuncture is the art and science of using needles, and electrical/or manual the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). stimulation of reflex centers throughout the body to create change within organs, glands, and tissues with intent to return the body to normal function.

Cox Technique

Dr. Cox has developed a technique of “flexion/disc-traction” that pulls the bulging intervertebral discs and tissues away from the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. This technique incorporates a special table that breaks away and flexes downward while performing the tractioning maneuver.

Chiropractic Adjustment

This term refers to a wide variety of specific manual interventions that may be high or low velocity; short or long lever; high or low amplitude; with or without recoil. Chiropractic adjustments are directed at specific regions of the vertebral spine. The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to correct vertebral subluxations, which can cause issues with the biomechanical and physiological structures of the spine.

surface structures, thereby increasing the local blood circulation and facilitating and accelerating the process of absorption and repair. The heat works like fever to increase the blood flow to the areas that need more blood to bring in white blood cells and red blood cells and antibodies to reduce infection and cause increased healing in a much shorter period of time. It is used a lot for sinus infections, ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia.

not prescribe or issue drugs to their patients.

Chiropractic Analysis

Diversified Technique

Dr. Clarence Gonstead developed the Gonstead technique. It adopts the use of the doctor’s hands to make corrections of the spine. The doctor may use the side posture position (lumbar roll) to adjust the lumbar spine, knee chest table to correct thoracic (mid-shoulder) problems and the cervical chair to correct cervical (neck) problems while the patient

A chiropractic analysis is performed on a routine basis to determine the patient’s need for spinal adjustments. A chiropractic analysis may include (but certainly is not limited to) two or more of the following procedures: instrumentation (skin temperature differential analysis), chiropractic x-ray analysis, spinal static and motion palpation, postural analysis, leg-length comparison tests, muscle strength measures, and other chiropractic analysis procedures.

Taught at most major chiropractic colleges. It is primarily the use of the practitioner’s hands to make the spinal correction. Many times an audible snap or pop will be heard as the correction is made.

Drugless Profession

Chiropractic is a drugless health-care profession. Doctors of chiropractic do

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy pertains to the use of electrical stimulation of the body. It may be used to control pain, increase blood and lymphatic circulation, reduce muscle spasm, relax or stimulate the nervous system or aid in the healing process.

Chiropractic Diagnosis

Necessary in the professional judgment of the attending doctor of chiropractic to determine the need for care and, in particular, to detect the presence, location and nature of chiropractic lesions (subluxation and attendant biomechanical, biochemical, structural and neurophysiological problems, etc.) and prepare and administer an appropriate course of care within the realm of chiropractic.

Chiropractic Practice Objective

Reduce or correct vertebral subluxations and other body alignment issues in a safe and effective manner.

Chiropractor aka Doctor of Chiropractic aka D.C., aka DC A practitioner of chiropractic.

Degeneration

The body’s response to injury is to form new bone. Calcium deposits eventually can build up around a vertebra and become an ongoing case of subluxation degeneration.

remains seated. This technique is also taught in most chiropractic colleges.

Holistic

Holistic health care is the art and science of regaining health by treating the person as a functioning whole. Health is attained by creating a natural balance of environment, diet, water, rest, exercise, emotional well-being and proper neurological balance.

ICE/IME

Independent Chiropractic or Medical Examination is an examination that is usually conducted at the request of an

insurance company that wants an independent examination by a doctor other than the treating doctor for the determination of maximum medical improvement or degree of impairment.

Integrated Chiropractic

Integrated chiropractic is the combining of different healing modalities, including various chiropractic techniques, to accomplish the goal of improving body function and reducing pain. Misalignments or subluxations have numerous causes including physical, chemical and emotional and often respond best

when a total body approach is taken. Some of the modalities used to accomplish this goal are chiropractic care, designed clinical nutrition, massage therapy, acupuncture, cold laser therapy and aromatherapy. The body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism and when one system is misaligned, all are affected.

Interferential Electrotherapy

It is a therapeutic treatment to aid in the relief of pain and the promotion of soft tissue healing. It works by tiny amounts of electrical impulses induced into the tissues in the vicinity of the injury. Where these waves intersect below the surface of the skin, a low-frequency stimulation is created. This prompts the body to secrete endorphins and other natural painkillers to help relieve pain.

Intersegmental Traction

It is a way of inducing passive motion into the spine for the purpose of stretching spinal joints, increasing mobility. It works by the patient lying face up on a bench table, which has roller-type cams beneath its surface. These rollers can slowly travel the length of the spine, stretching spinal joints.

Kinesiology

The art and science of testing the strength of certain muscles to determine areas of vertebral subluxations, neurological deficits, and certain types of nutritional deficiencies. Also known as Applied Kinesiology.

Radiation Free Breast and Full Body Thermography • Early Detection • Non-invasive • Pain free • FDA cleared • State-of-the-art screening • 97% accurate “ Cornell Study”

Manipulation

A non-specific manual procedure that involves a directed thrust to move a joint past its physiological range of motion.

Massage

Many doctors of chiropractic incorporate a massage therapist within their office. Massage is used to increase circulation of blood and lymphatics, help with pain reduction, and provided increased motion.

Infra-red thermography can detect changes in breast tissue up to 10 years earlier than other tests. Full body scans available for men and women.

Network

The integration of chiropractic techniques, which uses light touch or taps to relieve spinal tension to clear the body of nervous interference. Major difference in approach is the sequence or timing of adjustments which are determined by objective changes in body parameters, such as leg length, etc. Network chiropractic releases spinal imprints or facilitation caused by physical, emotional or chemical stress, and promotes overall wellness.

Developed by Dr. Nimmo, uses thumb, elbow or a “Nimmo Tee” to apply pressure to trigger points to reduce pain and edema associated with the subluxation complex.

Non Force

Non Force refers to a light chiropractic adjusting force which is administered to correct a spinal subluxation. Example: Activator, SOT, Trigger Point Therapy, Logan Basic, etc.

Nucca/Grostic

This upper cervical technique involves a specific system of x-ray analysis to determine the subluxation complex. The spinal adjustment is delivered manually but at a very specific angle.

Orthotics

Orthopedic devices designed to treat or adjust various biomechanical foot disorders. An orthotic is placed in the patient’s shoe and helps keep the foot in proper alignment. Almost anyone can achieve some benefit from an orthotic. Your feet should not hurt. Pain is the body’s way of warning you something is wrong. If you ignore your pain, the condition causing it could become worse.

Palmer

Palmer College was the first college of chiropractic in the world. The Palmer Method places a strong emphasis on correcting the spinal subluxation and establishing a normal neurological balance to all tissues of the body. All additional therapies such as physical therapy, nutrition, etc., would be considered secondary after the correction of spinal subluxation.

Pettibon

This technique was originated by Dr. Pettibon who used his background in engineering to develop a specific chiropractic technique to make corrections of the spinal subluxation. This technique uses a complex formula to ascertain various misalignment angles and uses specific manual and instrument adjustments to correct such misalignments.

Radiology

Radiology is the use of x-rays to determine pathology (cancer, tumors, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, etc.) fractures, short leg deficiencies and spinal subluxations (misalignment).

SOT

Dr. De Jarnette of Nebraska City, Nebraska, developed Sacral Occipital Technique. He divides low back conditions into three categories and incorporates wedge-shaped blocks in conjunction with a pumping motion to make sacral corrections. He also uses a “stair walking” movement to make cervical corrections. His primary intent is to restore normal cerebral spinal fluid flow as well as improve normal spinal integrity.

Spinal Analysis

The comprehensive process of evaluating the spinal column and its immediate articulations for vertebral subluxations and contraindications to any or all chiropractic procedures.

Subluxation

A displacement of the spine that causes interference to the nervous system. Since your spine affects the nerves in all parts of your body, problems in your spine may cause many types of health problems.

Thermography

Thermograhpy is the use of instrumentation to measure the temperature of various areas of the body to determine if there are any abnormal changes in the body that would alter the flow of neurological, lymphatic, or blood to outer tissues (skin, muscle, tendons, ligaments, etc.) Most chiropractors will use thermography to determine if there is a neurological deficit (subluxation) within the spine that would cause vasodilation of the outer dermatones (skin) of the body. Monitoring of thermography could be used to determine how well the patient is responding to care, or the degree of permanent injury sustained.

Thompson

patient sensitivity and pain during the spinal adjustment. He has developed a specific technique to be used in conjunction with his Thompson table. It may be considered a non-force technique by some doctors.

Toftness

Dr. Toftness has developed a technique that uses a unique tube-shaped instrument with a series of lenses that help detect the area of subluxation and neurological disturbances. This instrument is said to detect minute radiation and electromagnetic disturbances that exist with spinal subluxations. He uses a very light non-force adjustment in conjunction with this instrument to make all corrections.

Trigger

Trigger points are acupuncture points that become inflamed with vertebral subluxations and can be treated mechanically by hand, needle, or electrically such as electrical muscle stimulation for the purpose of pain relief.

Ultrasound

Sonography, in medicine, is a technique that uses sound waves to study and treat hard-to-reach body areas. In scanning with ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves are transmitted to the area of interest and the returning echoes recorded.

Vertebra

Any of the thirty-three bones of the spinal column comprising the seven cervical, twelve thoracic, five lumbar, five sacral and three to five coccygeal vertebrae.

Webster Technique

A specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment used to correct subluxations in the pregnant mother’s sacrum and pelvis. This balances the mother’s pelvic muscles and ligaments, providing the physiological environment necessary for optimal baby positioning. This specialized technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. For more information about chiropractic techniques and how they can alleviate your pain, visit the American Chiropractic Association at Acatoday.org or a credentialed and licensed chiropractor in your community.

Shop with the Planet in Mind Daily Choices Help Counter Climate Change by Christine MacDonald

Until recently, we’ve been asked to choose between the economy and the environment. Now we’re realizing that the two are closely linked, and that our continued prosperity depends on how well we take care of the natural systems that sustain life—clean air, water, food and an overall healthy environment.

A

lthough the worst impacts of climate change are still decades away, experts say it’s already a costly problem. In 2012, U.S. taxpayers spent nearly $100 billion—approximately $1,100 apiece—to cover crop losses, flooding, wildfires and other climate-related disasters, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. That’s more than America spent last year on education or transportation. Given the lack of action on climate change by Congress, more Americans are

looking to leverage their purchasing power to make a difference. Yet, as consumers trying to “shop their values” know, it’s often difficult to distinguish the “green” from the “greenwashed”. Natural Awakenings has rounded up some tips that can help.

labeling. The dearth of standards and consistency across the marketplace has rendered terms like “fresh,” and “free range” meaningless. Also, there’s more wrong than right about the “natural” label put on everything from soymilk to frozen dinners, she says. While critics of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s USDA Organic label say its regulations are not tough enough, Rangan says at least we know what we’re getting. The same is not true of many claims decorating consumer goods, Rangan advises. Plus, producers get away without identifying myriad other controversial practices, she says, including genetically engineered ingredients. Sandra Postel, who leads the Global Water Policy Project, has teamed up with the National Geographic Society to devise a personal water footprint calculator. It helps people understand the wider environmental impacts of their lifestyle and purchasing choices, and provides options for reducing their footprints and supporting water replenishment efforts. “It takes a per capita average of 2,000 gallons of water each day to keep our U.S. lifestyle afloat,” twice the world average, calculates Postel. The typical hamburger takes 630 gallons of water to produce, for example, while a pair of jeans consumes 2,600 gallons, most of it to grow the necessary cotton. Water is just one of numerous resources overused in the United States, according to author and journalist Danielle Nierenberg, co-founder of Food Tank. “We overbuy food. It goes bad and ends up in landfills,” where it lets off methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, as it decomposes. “We also over-order at restaurants,” observes Nierenberg, whose think tank focuses on the interrelated issues of hunger, obesity and environmental degradation. Overall, the U.S. annually accounts for 34 million tons of food waste. “Part of the problem is we’ve lost home culinary skills,” says Nierenberg, who says we need to rethink how and how much we eat. “We don’t really understand what portions are,” she adds.

Collaboration characterizes the broader trend in careful consuming that relies on cell phone apps. Sometimes known as the “sharing economy” or “collaborative consumption”, initiatives can range from car and bike shares to neighborly lending of lawn mowers and other tools and sharing homegrown produce. One of the more innovative food-sharing options is Halfsies, in which diners at participating restaurants pay full price for a meal, but receive half of a full portion, effectively donating the cost of the other half to fight hunger. Whatever the product, experts say, the new sharing business model is part of a fundamental shift in how people think about consuming, with the potential to help us reduce our personal carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

body, also known as a local energy field, aura, life force, qi/chi or prana. The energy medicine practiced by acupuncturists and other health practitioners that offer any one of the 60-plus hands-on and hands-off modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Energy Medicine, by Linnie Thomas, operates on the belief that changes in the body’s life force can affect health and healing. The therapeutic use of any of them begins with an assessment of the body’s electromagnetic field. Then, a treatment specifically designed to correct energy disturbances helps recreate a healthy balance in its multilayered energy field, comprised of pathways, known as meridians, and energy centers (chakras) that correspond to related nerve centers, endocrine glands, internal organ systems and the circulatory system. The objective for energy medicine practitioners is to uncover the root causes of imbalances—often from emotional stress or physical trauma—and harmonize them at a bioenergetic level before aberrations completely solidify and manifest as illness.

James Oschman, Ph.D., an academic scientist and international authority in Dover, New Hampshire, has conducted decades of research into the science of bioenergetics—the flow and transformation of energy between living organisms and their environment. He explores the basis of the energetic exchanges that manifest via complementary and alternative therapies in his book, Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis. According to Oschman, there is now enough high-quality research in leading peer-reviewed biomedical journals to provide energy medicine the credence to transform from a littleknown, alternative healthcare modality into a conventional form of medicine. The progression to more widespread acceptance is similar to that experienced by acupuncture and massage.

Evolving Platform

For more than 35 years, pioneers of energy medicine like Barbara Ann Brennan, founder of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing; John F. Thie, founder NaturalAwakeningsNJ.com

of Touch for Health; and Donna Eden, founder of Eden Energy Medicine, have delved beyond conventional models of healing to confirm that our sensory experience of the world is as limited as our vocabulary to describe it. New language for new concepts is required, such as: nature’s drive for wholeness, resonance, a new band of frequencies, restructuring DNA, local fields and the non-local field, encoding, entrainment, strings, strands, attunement, evolutionary healing and vibration. Eden, who has had a lifelong ability to make intuitive health assessments later confirmed by medical tests, can look at an individual’s body, see and feel where the energy flow is interrupted, out of balance or not in harmony, and then work to correct the problem. “Very little of the natural world that human beings evolved in still exists. In addition, our bodies haven’t adapted to modern stressors or the electromagnetic energies associated with technologies that occupy our living and working environments,” says Eden. “Energy medicine is invaluable because anyone can learn how to understand their body as an energy system and how to use techniques to restore energies that have become weak, disturbed or unbalanced.” Her teaching tools include her classic book, Energy Medicine, and Energy Medicine University, which she founded in 2006 in Sausalito, California. In a 2009 talk at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Oschman predicted that energy medicine will become prominent in antiaging medicine. “When I review the history of medicine, there are periods in which things stay pretty much the same, and then there are great breakthroughs. I think that with the advent of energy medicine, another milestone is upon us.” Learn more at issseemblog.org, the International Society for Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine website. TREKKING AS PILGRIMAGE A Literal Path to Personal Growth

by Sarah Todd

F

or more than a millennium, seekers have made spiritual pilgrimages on the Way of St. James, beginning at their chosen point in Europe, winding westward and ending in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. Today,

as portrayed in the 2010 movie, The Way, the core route continues to attract both secular and devout trekkers. It’s fair to say that every pilgrim derives something from the journey, although it’s not always what they expect. Quantum Healing Hypnotherapy is a regression technique developed by world renowned regressionist, author and teacher Dolores Cannon. This technique takes you beyond the usual past life regression and into expressions of self that span dimensions. Looking at your past can bring understanding and healing to your present life, relationships, illness, phobias, fears, habits and behaviors.

Alyssa Machle, a landscape architect in San Francisco, imagined that walking The Way would be a quietly contemplative and solitary experience. Instead, she spent weeks bonding with fellow trekkers: an Ohio schoolteacher trying to decide whether to become a Catholic nun, and a German woman in her 30s unsettled by falling in love with her life partner’s best friend, a war veteran in his 70s. “Inevitably, each person had some internal battle that he or she hoped to resolve,” Machle found. “My own ideological shift was about setting aside preconceived ideas about how I would experience the path, and focusing my energy on the community that I suddenly was part of.” The diverse goals of the people Machle met on The Way speaks to the power of adventurous treks. From the Bible story of Moses and the Israelites crossing the desert for 40 years to young Fellowship of the Ring members hiking across Middle Earth, we like the idea of walking long distances as a way to get in touch with ourselves—and often with something larger. In America, there are as many trails to hike as there are reasons to do it. For Cheryl Strayed, author of the 2012 bestselling memoir, Wild, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail at age 26 allowed her innate courage to blossom. A rank novice, she took to the trails solo, grieving the early death of her mother, and discovered a new kind of self-reliance. “Every time I heard a sound of unknown origin or felt something horrible cohering in my imagination, I pushed it away,” Strayed relates. “I simply did not let myself become afraid. Fear begets fear. Power begets power. I willed myself to beget power. It wasn’t long before I actually wasn’t afraid.” Other people on such journeys are inspired by their love for the environment, like Zen Buddhist priest and retired psychotherapist Shodo Spring, leader of this year’s Compassionate Earth Walk, a July-throughOctober NaturalAwakeningsNJ.com

protest of our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. It has engaged a “moving community” of shared prayers, meditation and yoga along the path of the pending Keystone XL pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, Canada, to Steele City, Nebraska. Spring emphasizes that the walk is intended to connect participants to the land and the people that live on it. “We’re going to small towns,” she says, “where many residents make their livelihoods from oil. There’s a deep division between such people and our group. But when we listen to each other, that division gets healed.” Activist David Rogner says that longdistance walks don’t just raise awareness of political and social issues—they also give people hope. He spent 25 months walking across the United States in the first coast-to-coast roadside litter program, Pick Up America. “As we walked and picked up trash, we inspired people to believe there could be change,” he says. His trek gave him hope for his own future, too. He now believes, “If you commit your life to the healing and restoration of community and yourself, you are going to be wholly provided for.” Whatever the purpose, there are many scenic long-distance walking trails to choose from. The Pacific Crest Trail, from the U.S.-Mexico border in Southern California to the uppermost reaches of Washington State, offers stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. The Appalachian Trail, which winds 2,200 miles between Georgia and Maine, provides 250 shelters and campsites. In Wisconsin, the 1,000-mile Ice Age Trail offers awe-inspiring views of glacial landscapes. Starting in North Carolina, the Mountains-to-Sea trail extends from the Great Smoky Mountains to the crystal-blue waters of the Outer Banks. In Missouri, the Ozark Trail sweeps through mountains, lush valleys and tumbling waterfalls. Plus, overseas trails await, as well. Sarah Todd is a writer and editor in Brooklyn, NY. All the Time in the World Transforming Anxiety into Artistry by Marney K. Makridakis

A

sk American adults if they’re anxious about time and they’ll likely say yes. Our society even deems it expected, acceptable and normal to experience such stress, but is it necessary? It’s helpful to explore what is at the root of our problems with time and why we believe we benefit from worrying and complaining about it. Both are good first steps to releasing ourselves

from the drama of getting caught up in and blaming time as a convenient catchall. Which of the following rationales apply to us personally? “If I can complain about being busy, I don’t have to examine other areas in my life.” “My schedule is wrapped up with my self-esteem; being ‘too busy’ means that I’m successful.”

“Worrying about time gives me something to talk about.” “I don’t plan things I might enjoy because it can be too demanding or even scary—it just feels easier and safer to be bored.” “Worrying about time is a convenient excuse for not following my dreams.” Once we identify the perceived payoffs from worrying about time, we can see them for what they are: illusions that keep us from living our true potential. Awareness allows us to make a different choice and to partner with time, instead of working against it. Einstein proved that time is subjective, illustrated every time we compare an hour in a dentist’s chair to an hour in the company of a loved one. Time behaves and feels differently based on many variables, like emotion, engagement, flow, desire, interest, pain and pleasure. Our perspective counts. With capricious factors dancing around in our every moment, we can see why time isn’t constant.

Worrying about time gives me something to talk about. Happily, we can use the relative nature of time to our advantage and choose what our relationship with it will be. Consider that with each instance we choose how we talk about, measure and experience time, we are actually creating a new paradigm of time for ourselves. We can relinquish general views and limitations of time that hinder us and emerge into the possibilities of time as anything but a defined line. It can be a vibrant, completely moldable, layered, multifaceted work of art that we may adapt as we wish, to custom design each and every day. Marney K. Makridakis of Dallas, TX, is the author of Creating Time: Using Creativity to Reinvent the Clock and Reclaim Your Life. Ancestral Diets A Lighter Shade of Paleo by Sayer Ji and Tania Melkonian

V

egetarian Awareness Month provides a timely opportunity to realize that a plant-focused diet does not derive exclusively from plants. Just as a carnivore does not subsist on meat alone, the same applies to a vegetarian. What can we learn from our Paleolithic, or Stone Age, ancestors? The recent trend toward recreating a Paleoera diet emphasizes the importance of vegetable nutrition to prehistoric communities, correcting the misperception that they were primarily meat-eaters. The original Paleo diet, before the advent of agriculture, reflected the hunting and gathering of lean meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and was absent of grains, dairy, starchy foods, sugar and salt. Today’s updated version might comprise foods naturally available and/or abundant before the cultivation of food in gardens, crops and livestock. Loren Cordain, Ph.D., author of The Paleo Diet and Nutritionist Nora Gedgaudas, author of Primal Body, Primal Mind, each contest the premise perpetuated by many in the weight-loss industry that fat, especially naturally saturated fat, is unhealthy. Those same proponents that maintain low-fat/ non-fat food is a panacea for modern

illnesses also purport that cholesterol is the chief cause of heart ailments. Gedgaudas writes that the diets of hunter-gatherers inhabiting varied landscapes, from the Inuit of the north to tropical forest hominids, included large amounts of fat and cholesterol, which is essential to maintaining cell membranes and regulating hormones. She points out that obtaining cholesterol from food is

necessary to augment the liver’s function of creating cholesterol internally. Cordain agrees that even saturated fats in meats can be beneficial, providing the animals are grass-fed, lean and live in clean surroundings. He emphasizes, however, that when our prehistoric ancestors ate fat, they did not also eat grain carbohydrates, sugar and salt, and contends that it is these components, not meat, that can be detrimental to the body. Doctor of Naturopathy Maureen Horne-Paul adds that organic, lean and game meats are exempt from the acidity inherent in corn-based animal feed. Plus, “When an animal is insensitively confined and killed, stress hormones are released that result in acidity. So, we are changing our pH from a healthy alkaline state to a more acidic condition when we consume meat from conventionally raised animals.” Scientific studies published in the Journal of Gluten Sensitivity, Medical Hypotheses and by the Mercola group attest to key problems related to human consumption of grains. Anti-nutrients such as phytic acid in grains lead to the poor absorption of minerals and related deficiencies. Improper absorption of dietary protein caused in part by enzyme inhibitors in grains also tends to damage the pancreas. Individual sensitivities to proteins in specific grains can further interfere with functioning of the neuroendocrine system and subsequent emotional difficulties like addiction

and depression may arise. All of these difficulties have been exacerbated by irresponsible prenatal diets that have made younger generations extra-sensitive to the challenges posed by grains to the human system. While Cordain doesn’t recommend dairy, Gedgaudas suggests organic or raw milk products, provided they retain their full fat content and come from grass-fed cows. She reasons that the presence of the anti-carcinogenic fatty acid conjugated linolenic acid (CLA) and the Wulzen factor anti-stiffness agent in the fat benefit joint lubrication. Experts suggest that the dietary formula established by our prehistoric ancestors can be the foundation for a modern-day, healthy, non-confining, creative eating experience. We can exchange grains for quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat (not technically grains at all), and include tubers and legumes, due to their folate and protein content. Blue and sweet potatoes also contain high levels of anthocyanins and potassium. Nearly every category of food, in the proper amounts, can be part of such a balanced diet.

When we explore what makes sense and eat clean and natural foods, we have a good chance of finding our body’s own sweet spot.

Paleo Parallel Tips n Make plants the center. For any meat, choose organic, grass-fed lean cuts and use small portions as sides or garnish. n Limit dairy to items with full fat content. Choose sheep or goat dairy when possible, followed by organic cow dairy. n Limit grains, but explore pseudograins such as buckwheat, quinoa and amaranth to add safe, starch-like body to meals. n For legumes, eat lentils. Blue and sweet potatoes are good choices for tubers.

Bring a pot filled with 2 cups of water to a rolling boil. Lower the heat to simmer and set a metal colander inside as a steamer basket so it sits on top of the water, not immersed. Line the colander/basket with the kale “wrap” leaves. Cover and steam for 3 minutes until the leaves are just wilted. Remove basket from heat and lay out leaves on a clean work surface, lined up vertically. Stack 1 slice meat, 1 slice avocado and 2 slices pepper horizontally near the edge of a leaf. Add cumin and chili flakes and roll leaf away from the cook into a wrap. Repeat with all leaves. NaturalAwakeningsNJ.com

NEVER BE WITHOUT TEETH, INCLUDING IMPLANTS Patients travel from around the country to Denville, in search of the perfect smile. Denville is famous for its medical community. So, it’s no surprise that a perfect smile is a must have item in this friendly town. Hand crafting those smiles is the life work of Dr. Steiner and Dr. Fine. Our office’s reputation has spread so far that we now treat patients from around the world; often doing more smile makeovers in a single month that some dentists do in a lifetime. We also offer an amazing alternative for those living with missing teeth. This dramatic advancement in the field of dental implantology now makes it possible for many patients to switch from dentures to permanent implant supported teeth in only a few hours. This new approach can be used to replace a single missing tooth or an entire mouth. Patients leave the office after just one appointment with a beautiful and strong smile. Discomfort is so minimal that most patients eat a light meal that evening. Upon entering our front door you will immediately know that this is no ordinary dental office, because that’s what most people say upon seeing it for the first time. Among our practice’s notable patients are actresses, actors, astronauts, models and TV personalities. However most of the doctor’s patients are everyday people who just want to look their best. Drs. Steiner, Fine and Kwiatkowski have focused their practice on those areas about which they are highly passionate. (After all you wouldn’t ask your family doctor to do heart surgery.) Those areas are Cosmetic Dentistry. Trained at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for advanced dental studies, they have devoted over fifty combined years to perfecting their skills and have placed over 23,000 cosmetic restorations. Our main focus is on cosmetic and full mouth reconstruction cases. This includes Implant Dentistry and Neuromuscular Orthodontics, which can avoid unecessary removal of teeth. Many people do not realize that dental problems may be the cause of headaches, shoulder, back and neck pain, noisy jaw joints and pains in the TMJ. Drs. Steiner, Fine and Kwiatkowski pride themselves in having Morris County’s premier head, neck and jaw pain relief center. Our office also offers a “limited warranty” that provides free repair or replacement of restorative dental work, when a patient’s regular hygiene visits are maintained. This kind of security could only be offered by truly World Class Dentists. This is why our motto is: “Experienced professionals make the difference.”
