From the Editorial Board

At fi rst, when I was contacted by editorial board of NANO NewsleƩ er to be editor-in-chief of NANO NewsleƩ er issue 7, since this issue was to be focused on the Southeast Asia region, I wasn’t sure that I could do it well. However, because I am an alumnus of NANO, I agreed to do it without hesitaƟ on. Due to the help of the editorial board team, this 7 th issue has been completed as you are reading it right now whether from the hard copy or computer screen. I would like to thank the editorial board team for all your support. Above all, the editorial board team and I have to say thank you to everyone who sacrifi ced their precious Ɵ me to write and submit the arƟ cles to us, as well as sharing their valuable (personal) experiences. In this issue, it starts with sharing experience arƟ cles of our trainers during the training program whether at Bermuda or the latest in the Philippines, followed by arƟ cles from alumni including the latest recruits from the NF-POGO CofE Regional Training in the Philippines. Many of you may not know that AssociaƟ on of Southeast Asian NaƟ ons (ASEAN), which has an emphasis on regional integraƟ on in security, socio-cultural, and economic issues, has developed and is working towards the establishment of an ASEAN Community by 2015. This is a great opportunity for SEA countries to intensify cooperaƟ on in the region. With regard to scienƟfi c cooperaƟ on, this has happened for a while. An example of collaboraƟ ve project is NANO SEA Project which is a collaboraƟ on between the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In this issue, we have updated the progress of the SEA project, as well as progress reports from NANO in LaƟ n America and Africa. In the Q&A session, we have an interview of Dr. Shovonlal Roy, alumnus from VisiƟ ng Professorship in India 2004/2005, who is currently a professor at the University of Reading. He has a background as an applied mathemaƟ cian, but his research interest is in biological oceanography. The interview provides interesƟ ng insights into his career progression since the NF-POGO training he received ten years ago. The VP at that Ɵ me, which I also aƩ ended, was about primary producƟ on for Indian waters. For the fi eld research, this issue contains the story of ArcƟ c research at Polar Ice Camp “Barneo” and Kirby cruise off Queensland, Australia studying the relaƟ onship between Ɵ de and zooplankton abundance. In addiƟ on, in the research community secƟ on, we also have the result of research studies on HABs, distribuƟ on of Sargassum seaweed, and salt intrusion in a lake. Since the theme of this special issue of NN is about SEA, we have added a topic about appreciaƟ on of NF-POGO alumni, including alumni from the Philippines workshop and CofE at Bermuda and AWI tell us about their impressions during the training and what they are doing in the present and their plans for the future. The editorial board team and I hope that this issue of NN will make you happy and keep you informed about NANO and its alumni whenever you pick it up and read it.
