Message from the President 'Dte past decade at the Nantucket Historical Association is notable as a period of profound change and growth marked by the achievements of the capital campaign. When it was officially launched in 1999, the campaign was deemed essential to carrying out the long-term mission of the association as it entered the twenty-first century. This was a bold stroke that had its genesis during Dorothy Slover's presidency and was later ably cultivated by presidents Arie Kopelman and Peter Nash. I am pleased to report that because of the success of the Campaign for the Nantucket Historical Association, the NHA is achieving its mission-related goals. To date we have received gifts and pledges of more than $24 million. True to the original intent of the campaign, those funds have been applied to the Whaling Museum for the restoration of the Hadwen-Barney candle factory, the construction of Gosnell Hall to house the new sperm-whale skeleton, and the refurbishing of the Peter Foulger Museum to provide space for special exhibitions and the administrative offices. In addition, we renovated the Research Library on Fair Street and restored 1800 House as the site for our lifelong-learning programs in traditional arts and crafts . Lastly, but significantly, our permanent endowment will reach our $10 million goal when all of the pledges are fulfilled. This campaign has been a monumental undertaking. Above all, I thank our lead donors-Tom and Georgia Gosnell, t he Teresa and H. John Heinz III Fund, and John and Robyn Davis-whose commitments to the campaign established the base that encouraged us to go forward. Indeed, t hose gifts inspired many other donors whose generous responses bolstered the campaign, enabling the NHA to receive a highly prestigious challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation. The campaign has had many stewards and was led initially by Peter Nash, who was succeeded by our current chair Marcia Welch. Both have worked tirelessly over the past nine years along with many others-most notably the late Tucker Gosnell, Arie Kopelman, Barbara Hajim, Frank Milligan, Niles Parker, Jean Grimmer, and, more recently, Judith Wodynski and Cristin Merck. Numerous other trustees, past trustees, staff, the Friends of the NHA, island businesses, and many people from the Nantucket community have assisted in the success of what is among the most ambitious and successful campaigns ever conducted on our island. To them all we owe our thanks.

It must be noted that the staff of the NHA has gone about its work dutifully over the past two years in makeshift offices and has carried on the association's work effectively and in good spirits. In addition, our executive director Frank Milligan, in concert with Bruce Percelay, chair of the museum building committee, has devoted many hours working with Shawmut Construction and our fine architect, Martin Sokoloff. In essence, Frank and Bruce worked two jobs for two years to complete the Whaling Museum renovation and construction on time. The board extends its appreciation to the staff for its perseverance and patience, and to Frank and Bruce for their dedication to the management of this complex project. With the opening of the new Whaling Museum in June, the entire island will have an opportunity to see the good works that have been achieved, and we hope they will be delighted. We invite all Nantucketers to join in the celebration of this landmark event. Preservation of the island's heritage is fundamental to the development of a shared appreciation of the history that makes this island unique. The past can inspire our future. The opening of the Whaling Museum will be the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Nantucket Historical Association. While we will pause to celebrate our achievements, we must do so recognizing that we are beginning a voyage into uncharted waters. As with any new endeavor, this will require continued enthusiasm and support from our members and friends. The ongoing work of the NHA is to develop new educational programs, maintain and enrich our historic properties, and enliven our new museum with year-round programming for visitors and school groups from across the region. Cultivating our endowment will secure those programs and activities in the future. Please mark your calendars for the celebration events this June, and on behalf of the NHA trustees and staff, I thank every contributor to the campaign for your trust and enthusiasm in a project that will bear fruit for us all now and throughout the coming years.

NHA staff members pitched in to position the spermwhale jawbone, brought back to Nantucket in 1865 by William Cash, in the new Whaling Museum.

Executive Director's Overview This was the year of Jeopardy! and Ken Jennings. So let's play Jeopardy! ANSWER:

Blood, Sweat, and Tears QUESTI ON:

What does it take to: • Build a new museum • Renovate another (Peter Foulger Museum) • Restore another (Whaling Museum) • Plan new exhibitions • Offer education programs • Move offices • AND undertake a major restoration of a historic house? (1800 House)

Fortunately, there was less in the way of "blood" and "tears" over t he past twelve months , but there was plenty of "sweat" on the part of staff, trustees, volunteers, and our exhibit-design team. As our supporters well know, the association's job is to preserve the physical remains of Nantucket's history and to share them with young and old. We do this by learning as much as we can about the artifacts, manuscripts, and paintings in our collections. We want to learn about the people who created them, those who owned them, used them, or posed for them. Who were they? Where did they live? In preparation for the opening of our new Whaling Museum in June 2005, we have been scrutinizing and interpreting hundreds of objects and manuscripts and selecting those that best represent the stories of the men, women, and children who are connected to Nantucket. This work represents the focus of our

2004 efforts, and soon the chosen objects-artifacts, paintings, manuscripts, photographs-will be displayed in our climate-contra lled galleries and restored candle factory. Of course, none of this work would have been possible if our trustees and campaign volunteers had not worked so tirelessly over the past twelve months to raise the funds required to restore and create the new building and secure a larger endowment. In particular, I want to thank Marcia Welch, the capital campaign chair, who has worked nonstop, and Jean Grimmer, who, as the NHA's associate director/ director of development from 1998 to 2004, helped implement and coordinate the campaign. As if opening the new Whaling Museum wasn't enough, we have also completed an extensive restoration of the 1800 House at 8 Mill Street. The early-nineteenth-century property will soon be home to dozens of year-round classes and workshops in traditional Nantucket decorative arts and crafts. The project was enormous and would not have succeeded without the dedicated group of advisors headed by Nancee Erickson: Susan Boardman, Lummy Gannett, Liz Verney, Janie Kay, Bay McClure, Peggy Kaufman, Ackie Dunning , and Corky Ranney. In addition, I want to say how proud I am of the association's hard-working staff and to thank them for their efforts over the past year, much of which was accomplished under less than ideal temporary conditions during the construction period. I want to especially thank the curatorial and buildings-and-grounds staffs. They have worked tirelessly to maintain all of our exhibitions and historic properties and dream up the visions of the future. Of course, the new Whaling Museum will be the center of attention when it opens in June. We guarantee that you will be, as they say, blown away.

THE SCRIMSHANDER In between their greasy luck and after the crew has sealed spermaceti in barrels below, the deck scrubbed down, harpoons and oars bent and broken from the hunt, now mended. Scraps of whale are still scattered about. Bits of bone with a graceful arch. A frightful tooth, enormous even in the hand that brought the beast down. The scrimshander keeps this in his pocket or in his bunk, and sometimes runs his thumb over the enamel's rough ridges. All the sails are resewn now and each day slips into the next while the scrimshander files the surface flat, and waits for the call from masthead. The sky spreads empty over empty sea shades upon shades of blue, deep and pale and delicate blue, polished like all variations of the tinged tooth's one color, rubbed smooth. The sail needle pricks each point to its own depth, while each wave rises up differently from the last. Foam rolls off the crest of one, then bubbles under. Another wave is blown back by the wind. Each passes, then runs together into the same sea, as the scrimshander scrapes each point along the lines of one image. He darkens these grooves with soot, while the voyage cuts its mark across the finished, glassy surface of the sea. JARITA DAVIS 2004 NHA Artist in Residence January 2005

Whaling Museum restoration, construction, and exhibit design were nearing completion by t he end of the year. Whale expert Dan DenDanto and his team completed the cleaning and preparation of the sperm-whale skeleton for the new museum . The team then installed it in December under the watchful eye of a whalecam link to the NHA website. Extensive restoration work at the 1800 House on Mill Street was undertaken in preparation fo r offering lifelong learning workshops in traditional Nantucket decorative arts and crafts, beginning in July 2005 . Curatorial staff and outside experts authenticated a whalebone plaque in the NHA's collectio n to be the work of Nantucket master scrimshander Edward Burdett {1805-33).

2004 artist in residence, poet Jarita Davis, was welcomed in March. She led poetry workshops at the Nantucket New School and the Cyrus Peirce Middle School and facilitated a gam exploring Nantucket's connection with the Cape Verde islands. NHA visitor operations for the 2004 season moved to the Quaker Meeting House where lectures on Nantucket whaling and Quaker history were offered daily for visitors. To complement the lectures, a small exhibition of paintings and whaling artifacts was installed in the Whitney Gallery at the NHA Research Library. Presented two musicians and eight summer speakers, including David Brion Davis, Thomas Farel Heffernan, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Frank Conroy, and Robert Suggs.

Nantucket Home Hygiene Nursing Class for Health and Home. Gift of Suzanne Gardner. 2004 ANNUAL REPORT 13

FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS the NHA's Capital Campaign has been raising money for the renovation and restoration of the Whaling Museum. In 2004, during construction, the Whaling Museum was closed to summer visitors for the first time ever. Operational expenses for the year that came in at budget and revenue shortfalls, due to the lack of admissions, were covered by prior-year surpluses. The August Antiques Show continued to surpass expectations, as did the Nantucket Wine Festival and Festival of Trees and Festival of Wreaths. With the help of hundreds of community volunteers, these events enable the NHA to fulfill its mission to preserve objects and properties and educate future generations about the wonders of Nantucket history. As we look ahead to the Whaling Museum's opening in June, we are all looking forward to showing our members and the Nantucket community the very best we have to offer in exhibitions and programming. Although the costs associated with running the new facility are anticipated to rise, a balanced budget is projected for the year ahead, thanks to the expected increase in museum visitors, membership, new educational programs, and a continual effort by the fund-raising staff to increase the NHA endowment. 2004 ANNUAL REPORT

This was the year we reached for the stars-and caught them-thanks to our many friends and their commitment to the success of the Campaign for the Nantucket Historical Association. Starting 2004 with an accumulated $18.5 million, the association turned homeward bound for the final phase of the campaign, bolstered by two significant challenge grants. First, Georgia and Tom Gosnell, who were already lead dono rs to the Whaling Museum, made a $1 million capstone commitment to help inspire the remaining needed support. For every two dollars contributed, the Go snells' grant would add an additional dollar. Soon after, the prestigious Kresge Foundation awarded the association a $500,000 challenge grant designed to broaden our base of support and achieve our campaign goals. To receive the grant for the new Whaling Museum, the foundation required that $21.3 million be raised by December 31. The countdown was beginning! With t hose two remarkable incentives, in April we began the islandwide public phase of the campaign, chaired by trustee Rebecca Bartlett. Writing to year-round and seasonal residents, the trustees described the campaign goals and their benefits to the NHA and the community. We were thrilled and honored by the overwhelming response to our call for support: over 900 people made gifts and pledges totaling more than $701,000. Clearly, Nantucketers understood the importance of the new Whaling Museum and Research Library and the need to increase the endowment in support of the collections, educational pro grams, and historic properties-including 1800 House, which is being restored as a center for lifelong learning programs in traditional decorative arts. Excitement was growing as the museum took shape on Broad Street. People were often seen trying to peek inside as they passed. During the summer and into the fall, "hard-hat tours" -led by NHA president Geoff Verney, building-committee chair Bruce Percelay,

Message from the and executive director Frank Milligan-offered our supporters Campaign and prospective donors a special opportunity to preview the Chair new Whaling Museum. "Wow!" was a word heard often during those tours. The tours generated both enthusiasm and a significant number of new and second gifts from donors. Included was one anonymous commitment to provide the last $150,000 needed to meet the December goal. As we counted down the days to the Kresge deadline, a trustee anonymously offered yet another challenge-of $100,000, which motivated board members to make second campaign gifts. By the end of 2004, we had met the terms of the Kresge challenge! The number of donors supporting the NHA's mission of education and preservation had risen to more than 1,500-nearly triple the number at the start of the year. And we had a remarkable ninety-four "signal-flaglevel" leadership donors of $50,000 and above as well as 131 "navigator-level" major gift donors of $10,000 to $50,000. As campaign chair, I am privileged to recognize and thank the many people responsible for the campaign's achievements in 2004: foremost , our friends and members who supported the NHA so generously; our dedicated trustees and campaign volunteers for reaching out to the community; the NHA staff for one-hundred-percent participation in the campaign; Jean Grimmer for so ably executing the campaign as associate director/ director of development from 1998 until September 2004; and Judith Wodynski for taking the reins as the new director of external relations in October 2004. We look forward to welcoming our supporters and all of the Nantucket community to celebrate with us the opening of the Whaling Museum in June. Fund-raising for the campaign will continue in 2005 and until all museum galleries and other naming opportunities are assigned.
