WHALING MUSEUM'S GOSNELL HALL

-·:...-·: ·'-: :•.;>:__: ....,.,, ..,.:...,,.···-..:

When the Whaling Museum opened last summer, it was a time of celebration and an opportunity to thank all ofthose who had made that historic event possible. After years of planning and work, the antucket Historical Association had achieved the goal of creating a new museum - thanks to a visionary board oftru tees; a diligent and tireless staff; many generous donors; a legion ofvolunteers; and the Nantucket community, whose support was so important to the encouragement ofthi monumental project. ot only did the successful capital campaign ensure the expan ion and restoration of the mu cum, it enabled us to open the new Research Library in 2001 and to increa e the permanent endowment, which is o vital to the HA' long term financial stabilirr Early on we recognized, however, that the HA would be judged not by the e achievements alone but ultimately by what we created at the new museum, the lib rary, and our historic properties. For this rea on, in late 2004 the board began a yearlong planning effort that led to adoption ofa new three-year strategi plan in December 2005. Built upon the foundation provided by the I IA's 2001 strategic plan, interpretive plan, and mi ion tatement, the new trategic plan encompasse the following goals as well ,1s key strategies to achieve them. You will be hearing much more about this as the year unfold . I IA will design and deliver PROGRAMS - The engaging, artifact-based educational exhibition , programs, and activities pertaining to antu ket history and it material culn1re. COLLECTIONS AND PROPERTIES - The IIA will develop and manage its collections, including its propertie , in order to enl1ance its role as a leader in pre erving and interpreting antu ket hi tory. AUDIENCES AND ACCESS -The IIA will reach out and erve diverse audience as a year-round organization. ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENEss-The IIA will secure and prudently manage the human and financial re ource required to support it mission and strategic plan; it ,vill promote policies that enhance its programs, its collection and propertie , and its reputation.

The HA is also midway through me yearlong self-study process of seeking accreditation of me Whaling Museum by me prestigious American Association ofMuseums--an important seal ofapproval for me museum and the HA. Looking ahead in 2006, our exhibitions include Signs ofthe Times: Nantucket Signs, which opened on May 11 wim a member reception in the museum's Peter Foulger Gallery. More man one hundred historic business signs are displayed, offering insights into Nantucket as a resort community. Susan Boardman: Embroidered Narratives opens on June 21 in the Research Library's Whitney Gallery, and Andrea Doria, a remembrance ofthe ship sinking off Nantucket fifty years ago, opens on July 14 (following the Annual Meeting and Garn) in the museum's Overlook Gallery. At 1800 House we will be offering a full schedule ofsummer and fall classes in early American arts and crafts taught by leading on- and off-island artisans. Generous grants from me William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the Nantucket Community Preservation Committee, and an anonymous foundation supported the restoration of1800 House as well as the development and delivery of me lifelong-learning curriculum. We are especially pleased mat a grant from me antucket Children's Charity Foundation enabled us to offer crafts classes free of charge to Nantucket children during school-vacation weeks. In keeping with the l HA's interpretive plan, we will be expanding interpretation at certain historic properties-me Oldest Ilouse, Hadwen House, me Qyaker Meeting House, and the Old Mill-to provide a more engaging experience for broader audiences, particularly children and families. This year the popular Family Guide to the Whaling Museum will include additional interpreted historic sites. We are grateful for me Worthington Fanmy Foundation's support ofthis initiative.

E. GEOFFREY VERNEY

This will be a wonderful year to explore the history of antucket in a wide variety of new exhibitions and educational activities for all ages. Be sure to check for new events on our calendar at www.nha.org. The board, staff, volunteers, and I invite you to make me NHA's properties and programs a central part ofyour year-round activities. We look forward to welcoming our members and me entire antucket community to our facilities, bom old and new.

Throughout the fall and winter, the I IA was well taken care ofby Nile Parker, interim executive director, and tl1e entire staff, who have embraced the strategic plan and their added re ponsibilitie .

CLOCKWISE, FROM THE TOP LEFT: ARIEL. KOPELMAN AND SENATOR JOHN KERRY; "ISLAND TREASURES:

GIFTS TO THE NANTUCKET HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION" IN THE PETER FOULGER GALLERY; NEVILLE RICHEN DELIVERING A MONOLOGUE AS WHALESHIP CAPTAIN ABSALOM BOSTON; LAURIE AND BOB CHAMPION; YOUNGSTERS ENJOYING THE MEMBERS BREAKFAST; AND LEFT TO RIGHT, PETER NASH, MARTIN SOKOLOFF, AND GEOFFREY VERNEY.

In her Curator's Report for 1930, ancy Grant Adams wrote about the ucce sful opening of the Whaling Museum in June of that year: "Word cannot de cribe what the 'eye can see' in regard to this dream of ours which has been realized at last, and so I leave it to the 'one who behold 'to tell the story." he continued, "The fact that, up to date, 2,791 people have vi ited this museum is very evident proof that our Historical A sociation has given to the community a valuable memorial to our ancestors of the whaling day." Several times over the ourse of 2005, I thought back to those who opened the Whaling Mu eum eventy-five years ago and tried to imagine what their "dream" entailed and how imilar it might be to our dreams for the new museum and the IIA of today. Of course we had some specific goals that couldn't have been anticipated by Mrs. Adams and her colleague . For example, climatecontrolled galleries to safely display the treasured artifacts in the collection are now a required element of mu eum display and proper con ervation tandards. A broad menu of education program that arc geared to all ages and different learning style is understood to be criti al for attracting today's audience , as i the technology of the twenty¡ first century that allows us to share even more of our collection and to reach people whom we otherwise might not be able to reach. I would enjoy the opportunity to welcome Mr . Adams back and walk with her through the new Whaling Mu eum. he would recognize many of the ame artifacts, and she would be surpri ed, I am sure, by some of the new ones as well as by the computer program , lighting effects, and other technology. I imagine that she would be astonished to learn that sin e June 2005 some 60,000 visitors have come through the doors of the new museum. In the end, I think Mr . Adams would be happy and gratified that the hard work begun seventy five years ago has paid off in the form of a mu eum that continues to grow. Both generations shared a irnilar dream at heart. The goal of opening a new building was a means to the same end of pre erving antucket history and sharing it with a public that values enjoyable education a well as the role of preservation and the importance of learning from the pa t. The Whaling Mu eum continues to inspire generations of antucketers and vi itors, and it continue to bring the past to the present and to help shape the future of the island.

The 1930 report devoted attention to the NHA's other properties as well. Again, the NHA still shares similar goals. Our historic properties are tremendously important artifacts and teaching tools in themselves. In 2005, the HA demonstrated this commitment to the properties as we followed closely upon the heels of the opening of the museum with the much-anticipated restoration and reopening of the 1800 House. It has been painstakingly restored to create a functional space for a host of hands-on programs in traditional arts and crafts. There are few places where people can learn historic traditions and skills from accomplished craftspeople and instructors within the context of a nineteenth-century house. It is a concept that was greeted with much excitement in its inaugural year, and it is a program that we look forward to expanding in the commg years. Yes, 2005 was a remarkable year for the Nantucket Historical Association. The new and restored buildings, lectures, exhibitions, movies, daily children's programs, music, celebrations, and more would not have happened if not for the tireless work of so many dedicated people. (I know many will remember that the month of]une seemed like a year in itselfl) To that end I must offer a heartfelt thanks to all of the staff, board members, and volunteers who put in countles hours over this past year to help the NHA realize its dream-one that began not with the con truction of a new building and the restoration of the candle factory, but, in fact, began with the dreams of those who came before us seventy-five years ago. We continue to build on their vision. And to our members and donors who have so generously supported the capital campaign and made all of this recent work possible, your support will allow the NHA to continue to develop its dreams of preserving Nantucket history so that future generations will be able, in the words of Nancy Adams, to "behold and tell the story."Thank you.

TREASURER'S REPORT

The NHA was thrilled to open the doors of the new Whaling Museum in 2005 and welcome more than 60,000 visitors to experience Nantucket history. We are so pleased that the museum is now a year-round venue for changing exhibitions, lectures, films, music, children's programs, and special events. As anticipated, there were additional costs associated with maintaining the new facility, and these were covered by the unrestricted support from our growing membership program and Annual Fund as well as the continued success of special events, including the August Antiques Show, the Festivals ofTrees and Wreaths, and the Nantucket Wine Festival's Gala and Wine Auction Dinner. Looking to the future, we will expand our efforts to encourage contributions to the Annual Fund as well as to the permanent endowment, which generates vital interest income that supports every aspect ofNHA operations. Guided by our mission and strategic plan, the NHA remains committed to providing engaging educational programs and exhibitions and to retaining the leading role in preserving and interpreting Nantucket history - all while maintaining a balanced budget.

The Campaign for the Nantucket Historical Association "rounded the point" in 2005 celebrating both opening the new Whaling Museum in June and realizing campaign donations of $25.1 million by year-end. The success of the campaign has transformed the NHA. It has strengthened us fiscally by significantly increasing the permanent endowment for our museums and historic buildings. It has provided us with a new Research Library and Whaling Museum-remarkable facilities where we can preserve the collections and at the same time make them more accessible to the public. And the campaign has made it possible for us to significantly increase the scope of educational programming. For all the NHA is accomplishing because of the campaign, we sincerely thank the more than 1,500 members and friends who so generously and enthusiastically supported us with gifts at all levels. This includes 101 leadership gifts of $50,000 and above, which are recognized in the museum with flags from the Nantucket whaling fleet. Throughout the campaign we have achieved important milestones, among them: • More than 300 people attended the campaign kick-off at the Siasconset Casino in September 1999. Chaired by trustee Peter Nash, the S15.4million campaign during its "quiet leadership phase" had already raised 9.75 million for the museum, library, and permanent endowment. • Two remarkable early gifts would provide leadership throughout the entire campaign: a 3.5-million pledge for the new Whaling Museum from trustee Georgia Gosnell and her hu band, Tom, and a $2-million grant for restoration of the Hadwen & Barney candle factory from Teresa Heinz and the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Fund. These families will forever be linked with the NHA. • In December 1999 we broke ground for the new NHA Research Library. The $2.1-million project would refurbish the former Fair Street Museum building and create an archival storage vault under tl1e abutting Qyaker Meeting House. • By unanimous vote in late 2000, the trustees raised the campaign goal to $18 million, based on the preliminary cost estimates for the museum. To meet the challenge, trustees and campaign volunteers expanded their efforts beyond the leadership level to solicit major gifts ofS25,000 and above. Trustee Tucker Gosnell headed the initiative.

As the campaign progressed in 2001, we began the year with gifts and pledges totaling $13.l million, and were "amazed and gratified," as Peter Nash would write, "by so many people's enthusiasm for the goals and programs of the NHA." In April we achieved the first campaign goal with the dedication ofthe Research Library, which included the Edouard A. Stackpole Reading Room and the Whitney Gallery. • Recognizing the constant demands of property maintenance, in fall 2002 the trustees increased the campaign goal to $21 million, earmarking the additional $3 million as endowment for the HA's historic properties. By year-end, $15.5 million had been raised. • 2003 was a benchmark year! The museum design was approved by the Historic District Commission in June. In July, Peter ash was elected president at the Annual Meeting. Having served as vice-chair, I was named to succeed him as campaign chair. Then in September, trusteeJohn Davis and his wife, Robyn, announced their $1-million gift to endow the Robyn &John Davis Curator. During Columbus Day weekend 2003, more than 175 members and friends gathered on Broad Street to break ground for the new Whaling Museum. Over the next eighteen months, the project would restore the Hadwen & Barney candle factory, renovate the Peter Foulger Museum, and connect them with a central gallery building and Gosnell Hall. That fall we launched the community phase of the capital campaign. Chaired by trustee Rebecca Bartlett, we reached out to the antucket community, inviting everyone to "sign on to support Nantucket history." More than 1,100 individuals and families would respond with gifts of all sizes, totaling more than 876,000. • Wonderful news! As the campaign turned "homeward bound" in 2004, Georgia and Tom Gosnell generously provided a 1-million matching grant to inspire new donations for the museum. That spring we were awarded a S500,000 challenge grant for museum construction from the prestigious Kresge Foundation, motivating us to reach $22.3 million by the start of2005. • Throughout June 2005, the NHA celebrated the grand opening of the new Whaling Museum, inviting the Nantucket community, NHA members, and campaign supporters to come to the museum and to share our excitement and

pride in the remarkable new facility. At last, the NHA had a climate-controlled, handicap accessible museum where we could offer year round educational progranllTiing and exhibitions from our extensive collections of art and artifacts. Newspaper and magazine articles spread word of our marvelous new museum from coast to coast. More than 60,000 people would visit by year-end. • At the close of2005, the campaign had raised a record 25.1 million: S13.9 million for the Whaling Museum; $7.5 million for the permanent endowment, S2.1 million for the Research Library, and $1.6 million for unrestricted support. As we look back on 2005, we also look forward to all we will accomplish because of the campaign's success. Although the campaign is ending, the NHA will continue its efforts to increase the permanent endowment and to build membership in the Heritage Society, which recognizes all who make bequests to the NHA. Directing these initiatives will be a fund-raising committee of current trustees - Nancy Chase, RehJensen,Janet Sherlund, ancy Soderberg,Jay Wilson, and Geoff Verney - as well as former trustees Arie Kopelman, Carolyn MacKenzie, and mysel£ Thank you again to all who have generously supported our mission of education and preservation with your gifts to the Campaign for the Nantucket Historical Association.
