This report recognizes and thanks the remarkable generosity of our donors in 2021 and celebrates the achievements of our Board and Staff over the past year. 2021 was a period of both innovation and thoughtful execution. We look forward to reporting next year on 2022 with a sense of optimism and enthusiasm.

In addition to operational excellence, the NHA had other notable achievements of last year. Let us highlight just two. In March of 2021, the NHA and the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum finalized their affiliation. By combining the resources of these two institutions, we have magnified awareness, access, and scholarship about this significant island craft. Then in December, Trustees voted to invest over $2 million into NHA properties over a two-year period. Already we have installed two new roofs and a new handicapped lift, upgraded security, and made major sewer repairs. We plan to touch every one of our 18 historic properties during the course of this project.

As we celebrate our 128th year, the Board of Trustees is grateful for your generous participation and inspired by the passion and conviction of our Membership. Because of you, we can look forward to many exciting years ahead.

We have much to be thankful for. The report documents the exceptional support and high achievement by many. Importantly, despite the ongoing challenges of Covid, due to careful oversight, operations ended the year in a positive position with revenues exceeding expenses and no debt. Attendance at our flagship Whaling Museum was back to pre-pandemic figures, and we look forward to opening our historic sites this summer after almost a two-year hiatus.

We bid farewell to trustees Chip Carver, Britt Newhouse, Olivia Charney, Finn Wentworth, David Worth and Kelly Williams and thank them for their many years of remarkable service. We enthusiastically welcome onboard Stacey Bewkes, Sara Schwartz, and Michael Sweeney knowing that their service to the institution will be equally exemplary.

Our island has many distinguishing stories that provide insight into our shared American experience. Informed encounters with the past allow us to apply lessons in the present and better prepare us for the future.

Our portfolio of historic properties must be commensurate with the ability to care for them. Maintaining an appropriate balance, such that these assets can be sustained, is critical to our success.

An increasingly healthy financial base ensures sustainability and the ability for the NHA to be the best possible steward of the Island’s history.

Our collections help us tell the stories of Nantucket spanning over four centuries. Both ensuring their perpetual care and making these collections increasingly accessible are critical to success.

IV. Steward and Increase Access to Our Collections

Last summer’s successful Weaving Nantucket’s Past Into Its Future exhibition at the Hadwen House showcased more than 100 Nantucket lightship baskets from the NLBM collection and the basket community.

Exhibitions

The NHA is continuing the tradition of youth weaving programs. The small class size allows for hands-on instruction for each student. Students sign their completed basket with a sense of accomplishment, making it uniquely theirs. This program is generously supported by the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation.

In 2021, the NHA continued the NLBM’s history, tradition, and preservation of the craft through exhibitions, programming, and more.

NLBM’s iconic José Reyes Workshop display was installed in the Decorative Arts Gallery at the Whaling Museum.

Weaving gams for adults also take place weekly where creative people drop-in to work on their latest weaving projects in the company of others.

Nantucket lightship basket stories were shared on @ackhistory social media, which includes Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as a weekly eblast series of stories, “Happiness is a Lightship Basket”, featuring modern-day weavers. New content was also created through a Nantucket by Design spotlight video on Nantucket lightship baskets, which can be viewed on the NHA’s YouTube

The NHA published a Nantucket lightship basket special edition issue of Historic Nantucket last spring. Read a digital copy on NHA.org.

an online auction, Baskets & Bubbly raised a record number of funds to support the continued mission of the NLBM.

Four oral histories were also conducted by Sandi Owen and Karen Butler. These will be transcribed and added to the NHA Oral History Collection. Additional oral histories will be done this summer along with a short film on Michael Kane’s spectacular nest of baskets. These were made possible through generous gifts by John DeCiccio and Paul Willer

The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum collection was added to the NHA’s collections catalog making it publicly searchable for the first time!

Other Exciting Projects

A new Nantucket lightship basket portal was added to the NHA website, which features article, videos, biographies of basket makers and Nantucketmore. Lightship Basket Museum product was sold at the NHA Museum Shop.

Through this Society, the Board of Trustees recognizes the cumulative giving by individuals who assist with the NHA’s annual operating needs. 1894 Founders Society members contribute $3,000 and up toward the annual fund, membership, and fundraising events, as well as to exhibitions and collections, plus scholarship and educational programs.
