T H E H O U S E B2 DESIGN. B MACKAY LYONS. WINTER 2011 SET IN THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE OF LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA, THE PROGRAM WAS TO DESIGN A SINGLE FAMILY HOME WITH A COURTYARD AND INCORPORATE A RETAIL SPACE ON THE MAIN LEVEL.

THE MAIN IDEA

OF THE HOUSE WAS TO ORIENTATE THE FACADE OF THE COURTYARD DIRECTLY SOUTH TO CAPTURE AND DISPERSE AS MUCH LIGHT AS POSSIBLE.

WINTER 2011 THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO STUDY TOM KUNDIG’S DELTA SHELTER FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, THEN DESIGN AND BUILD A MODEL OF THE STRUCTURE INCORPORATING AN ADDITIONAL ROOM TO IT. BY ADDING A MEZZANINE LEVEL AS A THIRD FLOOR, ONE IS ABLE TO GET A BETTER VIEW OF THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE AS WELL AS PROVIDE ADDITIONAL ROOM TO THE KITCHEN LEVEL.

WORKING FOR TAMPOLD ARCHITECTS IN TORONTO, ONTARIO.

THE EXISTING

CIRCULAR LAYOUT WAS ADAPTED TO THE CLIENTS DESIRES WHILE MAINTING THE ESSENCE OF THE STRUCTURE. THE MODEL, BUILT TO SCALE USING CAD DRAWINGS, WAS CONSTRUCTED FROM FOAMCORE AND CARDBOARD.

FALL 2010 AFTER PICKING A ‘SPACE’ IN THE CITY TO MEASURE AND DRAFT, THE TASK WAS TO DEVELOP AN OPJECT WHICH COULD BE USED TO DISTORT ONES VIEW OF THE SPACE AND THEN MODEL THE DISTORTED SPACE THAT WAS CREATED. BY USING A FISH EYE LENSE AND LOOKING DOWN A LONG CORRIDOR, THIS MODEL WAS DEVELOPED TO DEPICT THE NOW CURVED AND ELONGATED SPACE.
