NARRATIVE “It may be difficult to imagine, but this place was once a fertile basin, and within a mile of the park is the last recorded location of Yang-na, a large Tongva village… The history of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s (SPR) River Station, opened in 1875, includes a waterwheel, freight house, roundhouse, depot and station yard…. On the north side, the (Raphael Junction Block) Flat Iron Building is the second oldest industrial building standing in Los Angeles and dates from 1890’.” - Los Angeles State Historic Park website

NARRATIVE Through the exploration of desert landscapes from Death Valley and Valley of Fire State Park, inspiration came from natural red rock formations and the weathering of the landscape. Through the design process using various materials, the concept developed by adding, subtracting, pushing and pulling the object.
MODEL PHOTO #1: FOAM BOARD ITERATION
SECTION ELEVATION 12
MODEL PHOTO #2: 3D WOOD ITERATION
PROCESS Gradual folds are created through the modeled landscape with a push and pull effect. The design incorporates cuts across the model that shift in various angles and heights that cohesively work together. Similar design elements are imitated for the pool and the trees are organized to provide shelter and gathering spaces. 1
