CAPITOL A TYPEFACE BY NAOMI SHULTZ
C O N C E P T S & I D E AT I O N CAPITOL, a display typeface, was constructed using varying thicknesses and geometric shapes (based from a square module) that suggests an image of city scapes due to verticality. CAPITOL utilizes concepts found in architecture and geometry, particularly concerning the Fibonacci Sequence. The shadow-drop adds a dimension of complexity to the font structure, while the typeface itself is rigid and possesses no curvilinear lines. “Capitol” is a play on words, referring at once to the all-caps font format, while also suggesting the metropolitan quality the font has assumed. — Naomi Shultz is a visual communication student attending the University of Kansas

CONSTRUCTION
The use of lines create a visual illusion of curves and dynamism despite working from a traditional grid structure. The cap height is 6 modules tall and 4 modules wide. It follows a 2:3 ratio based from the fibonacci sequence, which is a sequence that exists predominately in nature but has been used by architects since Ancient Greek and Roman times. Though it is an uncommon solution for typographic construction, it maintains legibility throughout the alphabet system.
C O N T I N U I T I Y 1, 2 exists in the right triangle additions and subtractions (for the shoulder and the tail of all letterforms)
OBTUSE3 triangles repeat for a drop-shadow effect, adding dynamism while being legible.
