Assignment 1 The Group / The Field
Design concept
To use reductive method to reduce grouped geometries and to create opportunities for private, communal and public space, as well as creating pathways as linkage and transitions between spaces.
The Group / The Field Experimenting with simple geometries, try to have the geometries facing different angles. Using shaded dark areas to indicate the windows facing different views.
Starting with straight pathways cutting through a rectangular site. Circulating intersections of the pathways. Expending the intersections and creating communal and public spaces Moving the elements around to create a sense of chaos. 01
Setting a central focus point and lining up geometries to the focal point and forming triangular shapes.
02
The Group / The Field
Experimenting with different possibilities of creating pathways as linkages to different spaces, different sizes of pathways could give different experiences. 03
Experimenting with different scales and orientations of geometries and trying to achieve the idea of facing different angles, while forming different private, communal and public spaces.

Defining the Figural Elements in a Field/ Group 07
Design concept
The design concept is to use the material of smooth concrete and glass to create a contrast to a rough rocky landscape. The buildings all face at different angles and each has exclusive views. Public spaces and private spaces have been divided but the rooftops of the private rooms are open for public, creating opportunities for visitors to experience the exclusive sceneries on a different level.

Pop-up Rock sculpture exhibition space: Exhibition planning can manage spaces and direct visitors through the spaces. Exhibition boards could be used to divide the space to different sections, the exhibition space should be well-designed for visitors to circulate within the space. Below are different possibilities for the design of the rock sculpture exhibitions.
19
Building forms studies Experimenting with different ways to make building forms to accommodate different affordances and performances. Simply cutting and angle off the building or elevate the building and create spaces below the building, providing shading and shelter .
Trying to create accessible roof tops for visitors to go on a higher platform for scenery viewing. Large glass panels underneath with steel load-bearing columns to achieve ample sunlight.

Inspirations
“Under” Underwater restaurant by Snohetta The underwater restaurant “Under” not only emersed the building into the landscape, but also created interesting dining spaces and experiences. I tried to used similar building forms and make best use of the roofs to achieve different affordances.
Natural erosion of rocks Two main elements I used in my design were water and rocks, to create interesting natural sourroundings and rocky landscape.

Assignment 3 Defining the ground
Landscape ideas Main ideas: • Rocky outcrops in Australia • Water • Few vegetation
32
Exhibition spaces Outdoor exhibition space: Layers on rocks in front of water body, building behind acting like a picture frame, framing the view and the reflections.
33
Indoor exhibition space: • The window in the exhibition hall framing the natural rocks behind the building, acting like a painting for visitors to experience and to enjoy the details. • A big rock at the entrance to block the view, and create two entrances for visitors to circulate.

Water bodies at the centre of the site, creating outdoor exhibition spaces at the centre. The water-shed diagram suggested water bodies in front of the room to create exclusive sceneries.
Water-shed diagram suggesting a stream going through the site, pebble road could be constructed on the stream. The contour lines also suggesting sitting areas in front of the rooms, also provide opportunities for visitors to go on the roofs.
The diagrams on the left suggest a water stream going through the site, dividing the public spaces with the private rooms, water fall has been generated in front of the rooms for exclusive views.

After studying different landscape ideas, I decided to use both the shadow water body idea and small hill in front of the rooms providing seating and opportunities to go on the roofs.

Circulation
Public Circulation Private Circulation
43
This circulation diagram showed both circulation of private areas and public areas. Even though the rooms and the restaurant are for people who stay in the rooms only, but the roofs of those buildings are available for all visitors, so they can still access the areas and experience the sceneries at a different level.
44
Landscape explorations
This landscape shows the highest point on the top left corner and the lowest being at the bottom right, suggesting private room been separated by adjusting levels. 45
The landscape model above shows a cliff proposal for the landscape in front of the private rooms, creating exclusive experience for the people who stay there. This proposal also suggests some shallow water bodies around the site. 46
Landscape explorations
The model above suggests water bodies in front of the rooms, shallow water bodies at the centre area for exhibition purposes, and comparatively higher rocky landscape behind the exhibition spaces, even cut through buildings to blend the buildings in with nature. 47
