WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable include cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. A cylinder is made of two circular shapes parallel from each other with two parallel lines that connect to each other as they meet the circumference of the two circular shapes. A cone is made of a circular shape that has a three dimensional shape wrapped around its circumference and meets at a point called the vertex. The tangent surfaces of space curves are made of a union of tangent lines that converge upon a curve. This makes it a deplorable shape.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) The understanding of developable surface is critical in the understanding of architectural geometry because it grants an individual a sense of limit of the geometry a surface can withstand, and also, the type of geometric shapes which can be built upon a structure . A greenhouse in Xi’An, China had used the understanding of developable surfaces to create a structure in a shape of a large horseshoe over a hill. The horseshoe shape creates a natural center of the building in the form of an open air courtyard. This shows importance in understanding of developable surfaces in correlation to architectural geometry.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words)
Digital fabrication is a process of manufacturing in which the a computer is used to control the fabricating machine. This process changed the understanding of two dimensional representation as it expanded the bounds of that traditional way of architectural form and construction through the use of three dimensional graphing, modeling as well as digital constricting.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) Folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building designs because “folding expands the three dimensional vocabulary of surface by naturally producing deformation and inflection”. And the use of digital tools allow minute and convoluted geometric modules to be able to incorporate and smooth the over difference. Folding is also has “a long history in craft-based practices and product design, and it is in this context the digital tools are bridging a traditionally object-oriented practice and architecturally scaled work.” With these digital tools, building materials are literally being folded into place as it takes on a new dimension.
6
EXPLORING 3D PANELLING
Foundamental triangular shapes have been used to build up the three-dimensional geometries. Then patterns have been repeated around three attracted points.
