WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER, AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier? (Maximum 100 words) According to Le Corbusier, pictorial space is a space that cannot be entered or circulated through, therefore it is an irremediable space that can only be viewed from a distance, and it is eternally resigned to frontality. Pictorial frontality can be displayed in paintings through three terms. Firstly, objects are registered as a pure extension; secondly, the constellation of objects wedge together; lastly, distance and depth no longer matter.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words)

The flatness of Le Corbusier’s paintings are attributable to avoiding using black colour and adding texture. Colour black could build up depth to create a three-dimensional sensation to space, so Le Corbusier added white lead to his pigment. It is textural integers that appear against the ground of contour that denies the object to which they belong, hence the emphasis on material continuity of the surface, shape and texture to create flatness.

MARIO’S WORLD

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

Photocopy of the first mario world drawing. 0.1 finliner has been used to make lines clear and visible. Levels have been adjusted in photoshop to make the drawing more clear.

4

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

Combined pen traced mario world projection. 0.1 fineliner have been used for outlines and 0.2 fineliner have been used for cut lines. The traced projection have then been scanned and cleaned up in Photoshop, by use the tools ‘Background eraser tool’ and ‘Spot healing brush tool’.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEO METRICS AND OLD ORIGINS Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection? (Maximum 100 words) Pictorial space employs a vanishing point and stretches it to infinity, this gives a distorted view of the true dimensions of an object. Projection, however, is not based on perspective, but on the true dimensions of an object.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? (Maximum 100 words) Axonometric projection first arose in a military context. Due to the preciseness of the measurements, axonometric projections was used to accurately determine the trajectories of artillery projectiles.
