EDUCATION & OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Education & Outreach

Informing, inspiring, and training the next generation. THE MISSION of the Napa Valley Film Festival, a 501c3 non-profit cultural organization, is to celebrate the cinematic arts and enrich the community by presenting an annual world-class festival and year-round education and outreach programs. NVFF’s Education Programs are dedicated to expanding opportunities for local youth. We bring socially conscious films to local students and schools. We also offer in-classroom instruction and hands-on internship opportunities. We want cinematic storytelling (as an art form) and the stories themselves to be an integral part of the student learning experience. With your generous support, we can continue to open the minds of young people and expand the horizon of possible futures our local youth can imagine for themselves. Thank you for taking the time to learn more and . to join us in this vitally important work.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH GOALS TO EXPOSE students to films, filmmakers and subjects that open the conversation about critical, relevant and timely issues in students’ lives by screening and discussing socially conscious films. TO PROVIDE instruction and resources through workshops, internships and summer opportunities that will inspire and motivate those students with a desire to pursue filmmaking as a means of self-expression. TO REACH more than 3,500 students, parents and other community members throughout each year through a unique set of impactful programs.

Student Programs STUDENT FIELD TRIP INSPIRE is a multi-school field trip for middle and high school students during festival week. Students gather to watch documentary films and participate in extended discussions with the filmmakers and their inspirational subjects. Due to the increasing popularity and success of the program, we’ve decided to implement multiple INSPIRE days, including Monday at Lincoln Theater in Yountville (1,200 seats), Tuesday at American Canyon High (a 400 seat theater), and Wednesday at St. Helena High (a 350 seat theater).

FILMMAKERS IN THE SCHOOLS A special selection of NVFF FEATURE FILMS are offered to Elementary, Middle, and High School teachers to screen in the classroom the week prior to the festival. NVFF invites the filmmakers, film subjects, producers, and actors in town during the festival to visit classrooms to engage in student discussions. Students are prepared, engaged, respectful, and gracious for the opportunity to meet these artists and documentarians that are helping to put curriculum into real-world perspective.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS FOR STUDENTS & THE COMMUNITY Throughout the year, NVFF hosts and sponsors powerful FILM SCREENING EVENTS for students, parents, and educators within the community. NVFF seeks to provide a bridge to the young community by opening up discussion across the valley. These thoughtprovoking programs are presented in collaboration with many Napa Valley organizations and have already reached over 10,000 students in 12 schools valley-wide.

STUDENT FILMMAKING WORKSHOPS & SHORT FILM COMPETITION In 2017, NVFF debuted a Student Short FILM COMPETITION, to serve as a launching pad for the next generation of filmmakers from Napa County. The competition provides an opportunity for students to showcase their film projects, with selected films screened at NVFF. Winners will also be included in the NVFF Commemorative Program Guide and on the festival’s website and social channels. NVFF is also offering a series of hands-on WORKSHOPS taught by film industry professionals (NVFF alumni filmmakers from the Bay Area and LA). These workshops will arm students with essential instruction and resources to create a professional short film.

TEEN PRESS Growing from a small seed planted in 2015, NVFF worked with 13 students and 3 teachers from two Napa Valley middle schools: Harvest and Blue Oak. The 11 and 12-year-old students applied, interviewed, and were ultimately selected to participate in this extracurricular opportunity to become student TEEN PRESS journalists during the week of the Film Festival. The program focuses on developing young students’ listening, research, and interviewing skills. Students learned how to interview celebrities on the red carpet. During the week of the festival, the young middle school students stepped outside of their comfort-zone and opened their minds to conduct and experience thoughtful conversations with filmmakers, social activists, politicians, international figures and more.

HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE LEVEL STUDENT INTERNSHIPS Check our website often for a variety of seasonal, hands-on, high school and college level INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES with the Film Festival. As members of the film festival team, students come out of their programs prepared to enter college level programs as well as to embrace real-world employment challenges.

PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS

HELP US POSITIVELY IMPACT MORE KIDS Our EDUCATION PROGRAMS had their foundations in the vision of NVFF founders Brenda and Marc Lhormer. Brenda and Marc saw that a thriving annual film festival – which adds so much to the vibrancy of our community’s culture all by itself – can also leverage the web of relationships with filmmakers to bring an array of educational benefits and opportunities to local students. The demand for these programs only continues to grow. Join us by supporting these programs at one of four modest financial levels. You and your organization can be a TEACHER’S PET, a member of the DEAN’S LIST, a SALUTATORIAN, or a VALEDICTORIAN. We’ve made this easy and fun to be a part of this exciting work; each level includes appropriate recognition of your organization’s support, plus tickets to some of the most anticipated film festival events. If you are interested in providing even greater support, or want to discuss additional partnership ideas, you will find our contact information below.
