SERIOUS THE HAWKE’S BAY SUMMER CYCLING CARNIVAL Saddle up and head to Napier for serious fun at the Hawke’s Bay Summer Cycling Carnival 2017, 4-8 Jan. There are loads of exciting events across five packed days. Bring the kids and get involved in the Bay Espresso Family Fun Ride down Marine Parade. The iWay Fun Ride is a 40 km recreational (20km each way) ride through beautiful country with lunch and a glass of wine halfway. At the Legends of Cycling Dinner you can hear from top cycling champions including Julian Dean and Robbie McEwen. Plus compete in full-on races including the Black Barn Vineyards Criterium and Traffic Design Group Flying Lap. And of course, watch New Zealand’s top cyclists battle for the title in the Elite & U23 Road National Championships. There’s heaps more happening, and there’s something for everyone. FUN ELITE & U23 WOMEN’S RACE
When: Saturday 7 January, 10am Where: Marine Parade, Napier
The Elite Road National Championships is New Zealand’s premier national road cycling event, attracting New Zealand’s top professional cyclists. Starting and finishing on Marine Parade near Scenic Hotel Te Pania, the Women’s Road Race covers 112 kilometres of course that winds around rural Hawke’s Bay roads and along Napier Hill streets. It includes the Fulton Hogan Queen of the Mountain and Fulton Hogan Sprint Prime Race. 2.00pm – Medal Presentation.

ELITE & U23 MEN’S RACE
When: Friday 6 January, 10am Where: Church Road Winery, Napier Sponsored by Church Road Winery, the Elite Road National Championships Time Trials involves individual cyclists racing the same course as fast as they can, leaving in two minute intervals. The Time Trial course starts and finishes at Church Road Winery and travels along Puketapu Road, Dartmoor Road, Apley Road, onto Puketitiri Road and back onto Church Road. Distance: Elite and U23 Women 20km (1 lap), Elite and U23 Men 40km (2 laps). Approximate start times: 10.00am Elite and U23 Women 10.30am U23 Men 11.00am Elite Men
When: Sunday 8 January, 9am Where: Marine Parade, Napier Following on from the women’s race, the highly anticipated Elite Men’s Race takes place on the final day and follows a 169km course over Hawke’s Bay rural roads and Napier Hill streets. It culminates in a spectacular finish, supported by large crowds of spectators lining the streets of Napier Hill, and finishes on the beach front of Napier’s famous Marine Parade. It includes the Fulton Hogan King of the Mountain and Fulton Hogan Sprint Prime Race. 2.00pm – Medal Presentation.

WHO TO WATCH ELITE MEN
ELITE & U23 ROAD NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS HOSTED BY:
Sam Bewley, 29 years - from Rotorua Shane Archbold, 27 years - from Timaru
Shane is a colourful rider who made his mark on the track, riding the omnium at the 2012 London Olympics and winning a gold medal in the scratch race at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Earning respect with gutsy team riding on track and road at Glasgow, he grabbed podiums in the Tour of Britain and RAS in 2015 to earn elevation to new Pro Conti team Bora-Argon 18. He’s had an excellent first year placing 10th on Stage 6 in the Tour de France. He will ride in support of double world champion Peter Sagan at Bora-Argon 18 in 2017.
Jack Bauer, 31 years - from Takaka The 2010 Commonwealth Games road race silver medallist is entering his eighth year on the World Tour moving to the much-vaunted Quick-Step Floors team in 2017. The former mountain biker has enjoyed five professional wins, his last coming on Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain this year. Remembered after agonisingly caught metres from the finish of winning a start in the Tour de France in 2014 he has fought back from long term injury at the 2015 Tour. He was Top 10 in the road race at the 2012 Olympics in London and has ridden for Garmin Sharp, and Cannondale on the World Tour.
George Bennett, 26 years - from Nelson After a brilliant year the former mountain biker earned a further two year contract from Lotto NL-Jumbo on the World Tour. He has ridden on the World Tour since 2011 and enjoyed a huge 2017 where he emerged with 7th placing on GC and 6th in mountains on Tour of California; 14th on GC and Mountains at the Criterium du Dauphine; 14th in polka dot jersey race at the Tour de France and 10th on GC at the Vuelta a Espana including 4th on Stage 6. He had a gutsy solo ride at the Rio Olympics earning much praise.
Patrick Bevin, 25 years - from Taupo Patrick Bevin returns for his second year on the World Tour for the renamed Cannondale-Drapac team after debut year earned starts in the Tour Down Under, Paris-Nice, GentWevelgem, Tour of California, Tour of Switzerland and his first Grand Tour at the Vuelta a Espana. His best results were achieving fifth on GC at Czech Tour, third on stage of Vuelta a Burgos, seventh on stage of Tour of California and eighth on TTT at the Vuelta. He is part of a revamped Cannondale team that includes stars Andrew Talansky and Taylor Phinney and is joined by fellow Kiwi Tom Scully.
The former junior world champion on the track, and double Olympic medallist returns for his ninth year on the World Tour with Orica-Bike Exchange. Injury-free, Sam enjoyed his best year on the World Tour where he emerged as a key domestique competing in an exhausting schedule that included ParisNice, Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem, Paris-Roubaix, Giro d’italia, Tour of Switzerland, and Vuelta a Espana. He has emerged as the strong man of the OricaBike Exchange team.
Tom Scully, 26 years - from Invercargill A prodigious talent on track and road, Tom’s promising career was curtailed with a career-threatening crash during the RAS Tour of Ireland in 2010. He’s had a long term recovery to road with Garmin Sharp Development and Team Raleigh and Madison Genesis IN UK. He was tempted back to track with a silver medal in Points at the 2014 World Champs and progressed to win a gold medal in Points at Glasgow leading to signing to Cannondale-Drapac World Tour in 2017.
UNDER 23 MEN Regan Gough, 20 years - from Waipukurau Part of the prominent Gough cycling family from Hawke’s Bay, Regan is cousin of double Olympian Westley Gough. He has won six medals including two golds at the Junior World Track Champs, earning him the Emerging Talent prize at the Halberg Awards in 2015. He was part of NZ’s Team Pursuit to win the world title in 2015, and competed in his first Olympics at Rio. Also an excellent prospect on the road, Regan was runner-up in the NZ Criterium Champs in 2015 and 2016.
Robert Stannard, 18 years - from Palmerston North Robert is the current NZ junior road champion and runner-up in the time trial. He placed second (road) and third (time trial) at the Oceania Championships in 2015 and 2016. His performances earned him selection to the world championships, finishing an impressive 11th in the time trial at Abu Dhabi. He won two stages of the Mersey Valley Road Race in Tasmania. Robert has been selected to ride for the Dutch Continental team Delta Cycling in 2017.

ELITE WOMEN Rushlee Buchanan, 28 years - from Te Awamutu Rushlee produced the remarkable double in 2016 by winning both the time trial and road race titles in Napier, on top of the national criterium honours. The three-time national road champion has been a UCI Professional since 2008, currently with United Healthcare Pro Cycling based in the USA. She also played a key role in the women’s team pursuit combination that finished fourth at the Rio Olympics.
Racquel Sheath, 23 years - from Morrinsville Racquel comes from a strong cycling family and has been in the sport from a young age. She won two medals at the junior world championships in 2012, before moving to the high performance squad in 2014 and placed 10th in the omnium at the world championships in 2015. She was part of the women’s team pursuit that finished fourth at Rio and the world championships. She is the current national criterium champion and recently won the 2016 Round Taupo road race.
Jaime Nielsen, 31 years - from Hamilton Jaime was part of the track team that won a silver medal at the world champs in 2009 and bronze in 2011. She was 4th in the individual pursuit in the Comm. Games in Delhi and 5th in Glasgow. She is a two-time national road time trial champion and was runner-up in Napier in 2016, and key part of the team pursuit that was 4th at the worlds and Rio Olympics in 2016.
Georgia Williams, 23 years - from Auckland Georgia won silver medals at the junior track worlds in team pursuit in 2010 and individual pursuit in 2011, and 6th in the junior TT at the world roads in 2011. She won a number of young rider classifications in Europe for BePink LaClassica UCI pro team in 2014-2015 and has been on the podium in the road race & TT at the NZ Champs. She was in the team pursuit that was 4th at the worlds track champs and Rio Olympics in 2016.
UNDER 23 WOMEN Georgia Catterick, 19 years - from Blenheim Georgia celebrated her first year out of junior ranks by winning the Oceania time trial title and finished third in the road race. She linked with the Australian Roxsolt team, established to develop young female road riders. She finished fifth in the Young Rider classification in the Santos Tour Down Under, and also competed in two tours in Europe. Georgia is coached by Greg Henderson.
Mikayla Harvey, 18 years - from Wanaka Mikayla is a double national junior time trial and road race champion, and this year won the Oceania time trial title and was runner-up in the road race. She ventured to the world championships for the first time with two solid performances. In 2016 she was part of the Mike Greer Homes women’s cycling team.

BAY ESPRESSO FAMILY FUN RIDE
When: Wednesday 4 January, 4pm - 5pm Where: The Soundshell, Marine Parade, Napier Get your family and friends together and come and ride the 1.1km Criterium circuit down the iconic Marine Parade. The road will be closed, so it will be safe for all ages to ride. Dress up your bike or come in your lycra– whatever you want to wear goes. There will be spot prizes and some serious fun. Start location is The Soundshell. There is a bike up for grabs, kindly donated by Avanti. Make sure you linger after your ride and watch the high speed racing of the Black Barn Vineyards Criterium. iWAY FUN RIDE
When: Thursday 5 January, 11am start. Where: Leaves from A & P Showgrounds (Farmers Market area), Hastings This 40km jaunt (20km each way) from the Showgrounds is a very pleasant scenic recreational ride along the pathways. Riders are rewarded at the half-way point with a delicious lunch and a glass of their favourite tipple at Te Awanga Estate, 376 Parkhill Road.
BLACK BARN VINEYARDS CRITERIUM
When: Wednesday 4 January, 5:30pm Where: Marine Parade, Napier
Napier’s iconic Marine Parade will become the track for the Black Barn Vineyards Criterium. This is a high speed and exciting race for spectators to watch as riders tackle the 1.1km circuit, with sprint laps every 10 minutes. Come along watch the action! For cyclists there’s plenty of reasons to give it a go with $2,500 prize

Ride alongside Australian former professional cyclist Robbie McEwen and you may even spot another cycling legend or two! As a group, you will leave the winery at approx 2:30pm for the return 20km ride back to the Showgrounds. There will be a selection of food to purchase for lunch at Te Awanga Estate Winery including pizza, burgers, kebabs and coffee. You are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch if you prefer.
