stories of those who served
In 2018, researchers went looking for information about people on the Napier Rolls of Honour. These are a few of the stories they uncovered.
World War One
Lieutenant-Colonel Conrad Gordon Saxby
DSO MiD (Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, Mentions in Despatches).
Commanding Officer New Zealand Māori Pioneer Battalion.
Died of influenza on 27 November 1918, Wandsworth, London. Buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England.
Lieutenant-Colonel Saxby was born in Napier in 1880. He was educated at Whanganui Collegiate College until 1898, when he joined the staff of Roberts & Co. of Napier. Saxby resigned to serve in South Africa with the 4th Contingent, holding the rank of Sergeant. When he returned he went sheep farming near Opotiki, until he left New Zealand for the second time with the 6th Mounted Reinforcements.
He served first in Gallipoli, then, after the evacuation, in France with the Pioneer Battalion. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 7 August 1917, as Commanding Officer with the renamed New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion.
Saxby was Mentioned in Despatch from General Sir Douglas Haig G.C.B. Commanderin-Chief of the British Armies in France, on 13 November 1916. In 1917 Saxby was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) “for good work and devotion to duty ...Saxby commanded A Company NZ Pioneers, and his coolness under fire set a splendid example and was an inspiration to the men working under fire. His company work was always laid off with sound judgement and well carried out”.
Saxby’s funeral service was conducted in Māori by a Māori priest. At its end a young Māori Lieutenant stepped forward and planted a carved spear at the head of his grave ‘in token of a great chieftain’.
Captain Arthur Desmond Herrick MC MiD (Military Cross, Mentioned in Despatches)
Wellington Mounted Rifles
Died 14 November 1917
Captain Herrick was born in 1881. He was educated at Whanganui Collegiate School, before becoming a sheep farmer. Herrick enlisted when war broke out, leaving New Zealand with the Expeditionary Force as a Trooper in the 9th Squadron, Wellington Mounted Rifles.
He won his first commission in Gallipoli, but was invalided to England. He returned to the East in March 1916, where he rejoined his regiment in Egypt and took part in fighting in Palestine. Early in 1917 Herrick was promoted to Captain.
When in command of a Lewis gun section at Gaza he was awarded the Military Cross “for conspicuous gallantry in action. He handled his machine gun detachment with great courage and ability throughout the operations, thereby affording most effective help to his regiment”. (London Gazette, 3 March 1917)
World War Two
Flight Sergeant Tamatūranga
Te Rākai-a-Hāwea Tōmoana
Royal New Zealand Air Force, 149 Squadron RAF Missing in action June 1943
Flight Sergeant Tōmoana, a son of Paraire and Kuini Tōmoana of Waipatu. He was known as Hāwea to his whānau.
Tōmoana attended Napier Boys High School. He was an accomplished sportsman and captained the Clive Rugby Team, later representing the Royal New Zealand Air Force in inter-service competitions.
He trained at the No.4 Bombing and Gunnery School, Fingal, Canada, graduating alongside 25 other New Zealanders. He was presented his ‘wings’ by then New Zealand Prime Minister Peter Fraser.
By early 1943, Tōmoana was serving with a bomber squadron in the Western Desert, at times providing air support to the 28th Māori Battalion alongside other Māori airmen. In 1943 he was attached to 149 Squadron, becoming a member of the crew in a Stirling Mk. III, which took off from RAF Lakenheath. As part of a group targeting Cologne, Germany, this aircraft subsequently went missing without trace. It is thought to have been shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter ‘ace’ Oblt. Werner Hopf, 25 miles west of the island of SchouwenDuiveland in the south-western Netherlands, before crashing into the North Sea. A rescue mission was sent from RAF Lakenheath. However they returned only to confirm Tōmoana and the rest of the crew were missing in action.
Private Patricia Ann Morrissey
Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps Medical Division
Died 21 October 1943
Staff Nurse Helena Kathleen Isdell
NZ Army Nursing Service
Died October 1915
Staff Nurse Isdell was born in Greymouth in 1888 and completed her nursing training at Napier Hospital.
After training she became matron at Kumara Hospital on the West Coast.
In June 1915, Isdell enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Army Nursing Service.
She left Wellington in July on the SS Maheno, travelling with 69 other New Zealand nurses, and arrived in Port Said, Egypt, in August.
On 19 October, the hospital unit boarded the SS Marquette in Alexandria, but four days later it was sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine. Isdell’s body was found in a lifeboat, along with that of Margaret Rogers and four men, which washed up on the shore near the Greek town of Zagorá. Isdell was 26 at the time of her death.
Private Morrissey was born in 1916 in Napier and lived in Ahuriri. She was attested to the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps Medical Division as a Private with the Voluntary Aid Attachment. In 1943 the NZEF Official News Service reported from Cairo that three New Zealand nurses and a Medical Corps corporal were buried at a military cemetery close to the hospital in the desert where they were based. They were killed in a tragic road accident, when the truck in which they were travelling collided with a three-ton lorry during the night.
The nurses had arrived in the Middle East early in 1942 and had been on the staff of their hospital for nearly 18 months. More than 300 men and women of the NZEF attended the combined military funeral. A Catholic Requiem Mass was held for Private Morrissey in the morning in one of the men’s messes at the hospital, and a Church of England (Anglican) service for the other three victims took place in the afternoon.
An impressive parade headed by ambulances, a long line of trucks and cars proceeded to El Ballah Military Cemetery, where a guard of honour was waiting. Draped with Union Jacks and crowned with wreaths, the caskets were carried by men of the unit. A Gordon Highland piper from the famous 51st Division playing the lament “Flowers of the Forest” led the guard of honour to the cemetery grounds.
The burial services were read and the guard fired three volleys over the graves. The guard fixed bayonets and a Gordon Highland bugler sounded “Last Post.”
