The Sweethearts and Because I am a Girl range are still hugely promoting education and making changes to close to 1000 young children. We had the wonderful opportunity of seeing the results of all of our combined efforts by visiting Plan’s projects in both Indonesia and Nepal earlier this year. We are happy to announce there are several fantastic new designs in both collections available for 2014.

Nature Planet is very proud of supporting Save the Orangutan and their work to save the Orangutan and its natural habitat the Rainforest.

In the true vein of our mission we have added a new string to our bow and are very proud to be collaborating with ‘Save the Orangutan’ project, participating in helping save orphaned Orangutans and their natural habitat, the Rainforest. For this project we have designed a new eye catching collection of beautiful, hand crafted plush toys (see pages 8 & 9) As ever we are excited and incredible proud of what we do and what we all achieve together. We would like to thank you all for your continued support and hope you get as much pleasure out of our catalogue as we do putting it together.

Baby Orangutang

The world’s largest rehabilitation center, Nyaru Menteng, in the center of Indonesian Borneo has saved more than a thousand homeless and orphaned orangutans. An orangutan baby needs just as much care and attention as a human child.

At the center the orangutans are met with love and taught how to survive back in the wild. When they are ready the orangutans are released back into their natural habitat, the untouched rainforest protected by Save the Orangutan.

When you buy a “Save the Orangutan” toy, you support the rescue and rehabilitation of orangutans that are victims of the massive rainforest destruction on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo.

Nyaru Menteng was founded in 1999 by Danish Lone Dröscher Nielsen. The center rescues infant orangutans that have been stolen from their 6

mothers and kept as pets – often in small cages.

The orangutan mothers are extremely vulnerable when they lose their home in the rainforest canopy due to deforestation and are often killed in the human attempt to steal their baby orangutan.

Rehabilitation and release Orangutans and humans share more than 97 % DNA and an orangutan baby is dependent on their mother till the age of 6-8. When they are rescued by Nyaru Menteng they need constant care and have to be taught the basic forest skills that their mothers would have taught them.

After years of rehabilitation the orangutans are ready to be released back into the wild. “Save the Orangutan” supports the biggest orangutan reintroduction programme in history and fights

Facts about orangutans

• Wild populations of orangutans are only found in the remains of the rainforest on Sumatra and Borneo.

Before being discovered by a former forest ranger, Julie the orangutan spent months in a cage and, when outside the cage, was chained around her ankle. It is illegal to keep orangutans as pets and Julie was brought to the center Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan. Now she is learning how to survive as a wild orangutan.

Sif Sif was rescued after having spent her first years in a cage. At Nyaru Menteng she had a second chance, she was taught forest skills and in November 2012 she and her baby Sifa were released by Lone Dröscher Nielsen into the protected rainforest of Bukit Batikap.

• Orangutans are the largest arboreal mammals found on earth today.

• There has been an estimated decline of orangutan well over 50% during the last 60 years and the UN classify the Bornean orangutan endagered.

• Today only 11 % of Borneo is covered by rainforest and the deforestation continues rapidly.

• Until now 82 orangutans from Nyaru Menteng have been released into the Bukit Batikap conservation forest.

The popular line of “Because I am a Girl” soft toys supports a unique project for kamalari slave girls in Nepal through Plan International. In March 2013 Anne Dorthe Hjort and Michael Severin visited the girls supported by our donations.

The new soft toys were introduced last year and we are pleased to report that sales have already improved the lives of many girls.

A new life At Plan’s hostel we met more than a hundred girls rescued by Plan. All former slave girls, now living in freedom and going to school every day in a school across the yard. We were met by smiles and happy faces all over, assuring us that the hostel lives up to it’s name: New Life. The hostel is indeed a new life for the girls, who can now stay 12

17-year old Bishnu told Michael how the Plan scholarship made a lasting change in her life. She is a talented pupil and among the best in her class.

in a safe environment with education, food and opportunities within reach.

Freed by Plan One of the girls, Anita, made a lasting impression on us. She is just nine years old and has already experienced many challenges in her life. Her father died and consequently her mother had to travel to Kuwait in order to work and support the family. When her mother left in 2010, Anita was sold as a kamalari but luckily rescued only six months later. Anita talks about her mom and she clearly misses her immensely. But she is strong and brave – and happy to have friends and support at the Plan hostel. She studies hard in school and her dream for the future is to become a doctor.

Plan’s Because I am a Girl campaign aims to support millions of girls to get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them.

Kamala is 12 years old. She was a kamalari girl for sev en months, rescued

by Plan and now lives at New Life hostel studying for a brighter future.

A new life for 3,192 girls The project aims to rescue kamalari slave girls, to bring them back home and back to school. Some girls are not able to return to their family and in that case they stay at the girl hostel. Otherwise Plan supports the poor households with scholarships, handicraft materials, goats etc. and trains the parents through agricultural projects.

This way the families are able to make a living and avoid selling their children to bonded labour again.

We left Anita and the other girls assured that our contributions make a real difference, securing them a childhood with education and opportunities. So far the project has freed 3.192 girls, a result we are proud to be a part of.

In 2009 we engaged in a partnership with Plan Denmark to make a difference for poor children.

We are determined to be socially responsible and want to make a real difference in children’s lives. Our goal was to improve education for poor children in Indonesia. To give them quality education, a safe place to study – and to play!

opportunities to the children as well as the entire community. The project include new school buildings, improved sanitation and training of the teachers, thus improving the children’s education and opportunities for years to come.

A new life for 1000 children The project has been a success. Since 2009 we have rebuilt four schools in Java through sales of the Sweetheart range of soft toys. We support schools and children in some of the poorest areas in Java and the project has literally changed daily life and the future for close to one thousand children. The schools mean a lot to the communities, it is a gathering place for the children and their families and upgrading the school compound and buildings offer new 38

Visiting the children In 2013 we are rebuilding two new schools. The first one, Ngombak Primary School, got a brand new building for children of primary age, a new building for preschool children and new toilets.

In the Spring of 2013 Josie Monks and Michael Severin visited Ngombak Primary School and met the children, teachers and families. As the photos show at the time the new buildings were under construction but by the end of June the buildings were ready and the children had started using them. It was fantastic to meet and talk to the children and their families and experience

first hand the excitement and happiness this new school was creating to the whole community. 39 Plan sponsored children attend the school and 12 parents have been hired as craftsmen during the construction, which helps directly the poor households in the community.

The new building finished June 2013.

The second school will be built during the fall of 2013 bringing it up to a total of 5 schools renovated – a great achievement for all of us. It’s fantastic to be a part of it and to see change happen. We can’t wait to receive new photos from Indonesia and share them with you. Green Camp Mitra Bali started this program in 2004, to show people how they can help and act upon their environmental concerns.

Every year they donate albesia tree saplings to producers and artisans who grow them and then create the Fair Trade Keyrings and Windchimes among other products. In May of each year Mitra Bali commemorates the World Fair Trade Day by planting albesia trees in Abuan Village (Bangli region) helping replenish the wood stock that is used by artisans.

The Sweethearts and Because I am a Girl range are still hugely promoting education and making changes to close to 1000 young children. We had the wonderful opportunity of seeing the results of all of our combined efforts by visiting Plan’s projects in both Indonesia and Nepal earlier this year. We are happy to announce there are several fantastic new designs in both collections available for 2014.

Nature Planet is very proud of supporting Save the Orangutan and their work to save the Orangutan and its natural habitat the Rainforest.

In the true vein of our mission we have added a new string to our bow and are very proud to be collaborating with ‘Save the Orangutan’ project, participating in helping save orphaned Orangutans and their natural habitat, the Rainforest. For this project we have designed a new eye catching collection of beautiful, hand crafted plush toys (see pages 8 & 9) As ever we are excited and incredible proud of what we do and what we all achieve together. We would like to thank you all for your continued support and hope you get as much pleasure out of our catalogue as we do putting it together.
