Impact of Modern Technology on Higher Education Role of ICT in Language Teaching The impact of Modern Technology on Higher Education is not restricted only to the developed countries of the world but one can the pulse of it even in developing countries. The tendency of using Modern Technology in Education has started in the previous century. But it was in a limited space and in selected universities or colleges of the world. No sooner Science Revolution caught up in 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th century, also known as Golden Age for Science, Technology started creeping in. Dependency on Technology took a huge push during world war I & II. Soon-after, as the world settled for peace, Science & Technology took a giant step. This is now reaching every part of life of human-being. Before we get into deeper, let’s look into the 3 words of the title – Impact, Modern Technology and Higher Education.

Impact: Impact has several meanings viz.,1. Striking of one thing against another – forceful contact – collision. 2. The force exerted by a new idea, concept, 3. To have an impact or effect – influence – alter. Here, is it forceful contact of the Modern Technology on Higher Education or Collision? Or has any new force exerted due to this impact or it is just an influence of Modern Technology on Higher Education? Or has impact of Modern Technology has alter the Higher Education? In my point of view, the collision of new methodology with old methodology of TeachingLearning has resulted in exerting a new idea in the form of Technology and the influence of this has altered the Teaching-Learning methods in Higher Education.

Modern Technology: Now let’s look into what is this Modern Technology is all about. As the world started moving towards globalization, through which understanding of culture of every country, knowing more on languages, accepting of science to uplift the mankind, new economic theories for stronger financial conditions, re-writing of history, spreading of religions etc., started rigorously. In few years but because of Modern Technology, these studies started moving in faster breath. The young generation started catching these studies even more faster. The generation gap between the old and new started widening at such a speed, which the old generations cannot able to catchup. The Modern Technology is not too old, but is still alive, prevailing and in progress. Now we are all living and leading our life but with Modern Technology. With the help of Modern Technology we are understanding the whole world including man-kind.

Higher Education: Finally, Let’s understand Higher Education. The primary question is being asked by everyone, now-a-days, is that whether 10+ comes under Higher Education or 10+2+ further education comes under Higher Education. Reason being, the subject taught in Higher education gets outdated in very few years. And every few years, the subjects taught at higher education is moved down to Secondary Education. And an updated syllabus has to be incorporated at Higher Education. In the past 50 years, the syllabus of Higher Education has seen a dramatic change. Every syllabus is getting outdated in less than 5 years. Many new inventions & discoveries are being made. The depth of understanding science is getting deeper and deeper. Many new Economic reforms are catching-up.

Learning Language through ICT: Learning Language is now not restricted to a particular area or country. It has seen a seachange. Every Language on earth, if it has to survive, is accepting the change. Those which can’t with-stand this change are perishing. The Vocabulary of every surviving language is increasing. New words are either being given birth or are being imported. There is a tremendous change and growth happening in Higher Education. Today, Teaching & Research has been internationalized. Many institutions & Research Centers have gone for international collaboration and the remaining are eyeing for this. The intention for accepting internationalization is 1. Updating the curricula according to the present globalization age. 2. Improve Teaching/Learning outcome. 3. Enhance employability. Globalisation Competition has increased substantially between developed countries and among developing countries. This is giving students International world view on any given subject. This has helped him/her to learn more international languages and do research on them. He/She can study and research in different approach by using Modern Technology. Behind all these change, ICT (Information & Communication Technology) is being introduced in all the fields of life including Education. In many countries ICT has became part of the curriculum. In Language Learning, use of ICT is playing a major role across the world. It is being used from pre-school to University. Since ICT has became a potentially powerful and enabling tool for education change & reform, it is being widely used at all levels of education for better learning of any language. It is being now used to learn grammar, speaking & communication by various computer assisted language learning methods. Of late, inter-active technology has been adopted for better learning of any language. Now learning of language through ICT is becoming essential and hence, one can learn a particular language sitting anywhere on earth. It is not necessarily one has to be in England to learn English, so also one can learn Hindi being in Europe.

The ICT along with Computers & Internet has directed the teaching-learning of languages in a new groove. These Technologies are being used both in the class room as well as on-line learning. The advancement of this ICT is the e-content, e-learning and e-book, where it integrated sound, graphics, images, animations & Movie.

E-content

means digital text and images designed for display on web pages. .E-content are the one through which, one can present all the aspect of education.

The e-books

are simpler; hundreds of e-books can be stored at lesser space. Here the

reader/learner wants the technology to read it for him/her, it does. E-learning is learning through electronic technology using computer or any device & internet. E-learning helps the learner to learn from any part of the world. In the absence of face-to-face learning, e-learning of languages are gaining popularity across the world. Even though the Tutor & Pupil both are not in the same room and same place, still language can be learnt & taught. The guidance, instructions, information or further explanations etc., happens through this. Presentation of Language Learning through text-based materials, audio-video is helping the learner to understand the learning material, also ICT is offering possibility of analyzing learner’s response with appropriate feedback. Through ICT Communication has increased between people of different countries by e-mails & computer aided discussions, web-based learning, audio & video conferences.

Disadvantage: The disadvantage of ICT enabled Language Learning is of the intimacy of teacher-student relationship. In Language Learning, efforts will be there by the teacher in emphasizing of Pronunciation, expressing emotions of the poet or poem or stories through body languages. Yes, body language is most essential for a language teacher. He/She has to bring in the essence of the poem, story or drama in the classroom through body language. Now efforts are or to break this and bring in more virtual world in the classroom through ICT by using text, songs, stories etc., to the students in real time and in proper manner. This helps in interaction process and allow develop virtual classroom based video conferencing. To do this the teacher has to consider 1. Role of the Language, 2. Role of the Language Teacher, 3. Teaching Plans/Syllabus Design, 4. Teaching activities/Learning tasks. 5. Learning Environment, 6. To build Rappot (Teacher-Student, Student-Student) through ICT, 4

7. Relationship between College and Society where the classroom is situated, 8. Reinforcement of Linguistic Competence & Development of Personal Vocabulary, 9. Improvement of capacity of taking notes while reading or while listening, 10. How best pronunciation becomes part of teaching. 11. Emotions are understood properly. 12. How to pat the best student and encourage the underperforming student.

Advantage: The advantages of ICT is 1. It enhances the Plan, draft, revise and edit their own & others writing using word processor and other desk top publishing packages. 2. Share the Writings, 3. Transform different, media into one. 4. Publish writings, 5. Communicate with wider group of people – helps collaborative learning, 6. If poetry is being taught, the expressions can be shown through videos. Students of whole world will be seeing the same expressions. This benefits in spreading right message of the poem to everyone in a proper way. 7. After the class is over, one can ask questions & get the students answers through ICT. By this, students are enabled to see, understand, listen, express their feelings through writings. 8. The spellings of any difficult word can be clearly shown in standard fonts in wider and clear on screens. Many a times, no need of text books. Reduce paper and save trees. 9. Students/Learner can see the videos any number of times they want till they accustom to the meaning of it. Many students/learner tend to listen twice or thrice to understand the meaning of the particular poem or story or phrase. ICT helps them to re-listen and learn the language better. 10. Students/Learners can dramatise along with the video. They learn the expression quotient also. 11. Student/Learner does it all, teacher only aides in co-planning and structuring. 12. ICT learning of Language is more beneficial in rural areas and in those places where the availability of the particular language teacher is not possible. 5

Adopting ICT in Language Learning is essential. The E-content is one of the essential tool in spreading Language to every corner of the world. Here are few examples. The Kannada, English and Hindi Poems of SSLC, which are required to be remembered by the students have been brought in e-content form. This can be downloaded in any smart devices including mobiles. The students even if they have missed the class or due to lack of the particular language teacher, still can learn it’s pronunciation. They can listen to it as many times they want, till they can able to remember the said poem. Another attempt was made to give the summary of Hindi poems prescribed for degree class. The students before getting into the examination hall can just listen to these explanations. No panic of non-availability of text books or missing notes. These are the fine example for the Role of ICT in Language Teaching.
