Addendum to the Strategic Plan 2013 – 2016 In late 2014, early 2015 NAPWHA undertook a mid-term review of its Strategic Plan. To inform the review NAPWHA Board members, CEOs of positive organisations around the country, past and present NAPWHA CEOs and some of the organisation’s long-term supporters and advisers were interviewed. As a result of this process 11 competencies were identified that would enhance the current Strategic Plan by their addition and are articulated in this addendum under each of the 6 strategies with reference to the Seventh National HIV Strategy.


Maintaining the meaningful participation of PLHIV across the HIV partnership The National Strategy commits the Commonwealth to a partnership approach and the Commonwealth cannot achieve this goal without NAPWHA. Guiding Principle: Health Promotion, Partnership, Meaningful involvement of Affected Communities

Delivering HIV community-based leadership within the national response NAPWHA is a highly regarded and experienced research partner. Priority Area: 7.6 Surveillance, Research and Evaluation NAPWHA has valuable influence with pharmaceutical companies, engaging them in the resourcing of community responses. Guiding Principle: Partnership and Meaningful Involvement of Affected Communities

Undertaking best practice, peer-based health promotion and improving health literacy NAPWHA’s role in prevention has never been more critical. Changes in national approaches to prevention (i.e. biomedical interventions), position NAPWHA as the leading community organisation for HIV prevention (TasP, PrEP, antimicrobials). Priority Area: 7.1 Prevention

Delivering national leadership across health policy, treatments and research developments NAPWHA has a strong record in demonstrating treatments expertise, and expertise is needed at this time of great change in HIV treatments. Priority Area: 7.3 Management, Care and Support NAPWHA is a highly regarded and experienced research partner. Priority Area: 7.6 Research and Evaluation NAPWHA makes important contributions to major national and international forums and conferences. Priority Area: 7.1, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5 Prevention; Management, Care and Support; Workforce; Enabling Environment

Monitoring and responding to the impacts of HIV on the social inclusion and human rights of PLHIV The national strategy has an objective around quality of life for PLHIV. NAPWHA is critical to any understanding or measurement of this. Priority Area: 7.3&7.6 Management, Care and Support; Surveillance, Research and Evaluation NAPWHA is critical to efforts to combat stigma and discrimination and to promotion of PLHIV legal and human rights. Priority Area: 7.3&7.5, Care and Support; Enabling Environment

Supporting the effective engagement with member organisations and national networks NAPWHA is the only means of connecting with PLHIV around Australia. NAPWHA can mobilise positive communities nationwide. Priority Area: 7.3 Management, Care and Support NAPWHA promotes national consistency in HIV responses, ensuring PLHIV have access to equivalent opportunities nationwide.
