Methyl salicylate is officialy classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic by the European commission. What is it and what does it mean? In cosmetics methyl salicylate is used for acute joint and muscular pain, used as a rubefacient and analgesic in deep heating linements1. This is why this ingredient is often found in warming sports lotions and gives it that typical smell. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commision has based it descision to prohibit this ingredient due to the fact that research has shown that the use of this product in topical products could potentially cause cancer.
How do you know if a product contains Methyl salicylate? Every lotion, creme or ointment that is sold in Europe is obliged to put their ingredients list on the packaging. These ingredients follow an order of highest percentage to lowest percentage untill 1%. Ingredients with a concentration less than 1% can be put in random order. The name of the product is the name by which it is registered in the international classification system (INCI) . If a product contains methyl salicylate, you will find it in the ingredient list. After 17 december 2022 only a minor concentration of methyl salicylate will be allowed in cosmetic products (see list and concentrations underneath). There are – already - multiple safe alternative ingredients on the market to replace methyl salicylate.
What about the NAQI® products? NAQI has never used Methyl salicylate in any of their products. The NAQI® laboratory puts great emphesis in developing products with the safest ingredients possible. Several of our productranges (e.g. sportslotion, massage lotions and therapeutic gels) include products that promote muscle recovery and/or have a heating effect. As active ingredients for this we use, among others: camphor, methylnicotinate, essential oils and capsicum.
