Title: Hello, I'm a freshman of 2015
Hello. I have got the permit to enter to your university this year. The reason why I am sending you this email is that I want to ask you some questions that I want to know before I finally decide to enter. Of course, those questions may be disturbing and uncomfortable for you. But I want to ask you those questions because I want to judge by who I will actually learn from and how, not by the so-called ‘name value’ when I judge a university. Of course, I don't have a great talent or a rich knowledge of architecture, but I want to understand the direction of the university and your view on architecture as best as I can. If you do not want to, you don't have to reply.
01.01. LETTER
First, what area are you currently engaged in architecture, and which place does the university belong to in the architectural field? (What I am asking is not about any great achievement in the architectural field, but about how you belong to the ‘architectural field’ and how the school is connected to the architectural world) Second, what is your viewpoint on Architecture? (I think it's too comprehensive, abstract question and it's going to be hard to answer, but I'm asking you because it's really an essential part of my question.) Third, what part does the school or you focus on in teaching architecture? (If possible, please explain the current curriculum at the university.) Of course, it may be premature to judge you or the university with these three questions. But in order to judge a college based purely on a practical view of education, I thought that I had to listen to the professor who will actually teach me. Once again, I hope that this email will not be uncomfortable to offend you. I look forward to your honest and sincere answer.
Thank you.
Kim Nayun

Title: Re: Hello, I'm a freshman of 2015
First of all, congratulations on your admission to our university! And I’m glad that you asked. I think you are a smart student, so I hope you become my disciple. To your questions, you can find my answers as below.
01.02. REPLY
About the first, My major is architectural history and I have an important role as a senior scholar in the field of Korean architectural history. My work is restoring and preserving important cultural assets of the country as an expert member of Korea Cultural Heritage Administration. I am currently working as a general manager of restoration of old Korean legation in Washington, USA. In the architectural field, our university is well known for its architecture and receiving significant attention for the students winning the first prize in a row in the Docomomo Korea Competition, the largest architecture competition in Korea. Our university has an excellent faculty consisting of 12 successful professors (including professor of liberal arts) who graduated from MIT and the University of Wisconsin in USA, the University of Berlin in Germany, the Waseda University in Japan, the French Higher Education Institute, the University of Sydney in Australia, and the Seoul National University and Korea University in Korea, who are as competitive as those of any other universities in Korea. We're thinking about national status from the beginning, not at all about our status in Daejeon city. And so far, there have been top foreign faculty members. You can check it on the website. And about me, if you search “Kim Jong Heon” on the internet, you can check my various activities. About the second, My view of architecture is to modernize Korean traditional architecture. Traditional Korean house 'Hanok' was cut off from modern through modern times, I'm trying to make Hanok suitable for modern life. But I thought that research on modern is necessary in this process, so I've researched on modern architecture now. And I had studied historical theory, but I like to associate it with real work, so I designed Mokmyeoksanbang in Namsan Mountain and Jangchundang Park, and put it on display at the Clay Arc Museum in Gimhae city. I don't know if you understand, but I've worked by a variety of approaches: morphology society history and technological history. About the third, My classes I have teach are theoretical such as Korean architecture history, Western architecture history, modern architecture history, and architectural criticism. In design class, I'm teaching urban regeneration, remodeling, and modern hanok and so on based on the historical and cultural context. Finally, all of the professors have practical experience, and they're not just teaching in words, they're teaching things that you can actually use in society. And last year, the department created a humanities book cafe last year and is operating it. I like active and enterprising students like you. I think the basic qualities of an architect should be a progressive spirit. I'm sure you won't regret it if you choose our school. Maybe if you come in and take a class, you'll feel a much better university than you thought. I can assure you that our professors are comparable to those of any other university in Korea. A student's attitude is everything. I'm sure that students with active thinking like you will definitely get good results in school. I hope to meet you at school and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. If you are accepted to any other schools, compare professors carefully and choose a school. Also, I am also the director of the Paichai Institute History Museum in Jeong-dong, Seoul, so you can visit the museum in Seoul. Anyway, I'm glad to answer your questions by e-mail and look forward to seeing you at our university.
